’n Tronkbewaarder by die Goodwood-gevangenis se gesin is in twee ge-skeur ná ’n brand hul woonkwartie-

re verwoes het.Sipho Radebe (skuilnaam) se vrou en kin-

ders woon nou by familie ná verlede maandse brand. Volgens Radebe moet hy in sy een-

heid agterbly, al is die dak sodanig beskadigdat die reënwater inloop. “Ons het al baie bydie bestuur van die fasiliteit gekla, maar nie-mand luister na ons nie. Dit is onmenslik omin ’n verwoeste gebou te bly, veral noudatdie winter hier is,” sê Radebe, wat sy naamuit vrees vir viktimisasie verswyg wil hê.

Radebe se vrou, Babalwa, sukkel met ’nlongkwaal en moes inderhaas ander blypleksoek.

“Ek was in die hospitaal toe die brand ineen van die ander eenhede ontstaan het. Metmy tuiskoms het ek gesien dit is nie gesondvir my om daar aan te bly nie, aangesien ekgesukkel het om asem te haal.

Drug dealer busted in ParowANDRÉ BAKKES

A28-year-old Nigerian man who wasgranted asylum in South Africa, wasarrested in Parow last week for deal-

ing in drugs.According to local police spokesperson

CaptainKevinWilliams, the foreign nation-al’s asylum documents expired in 2015.“Metro Police were on crime prevention

duties when they received anonymous in-formation about drugs being sold fromsomeone’s room,” elaborates Williams.

“The police officials responded immedi-ately to the building where the alleged ille-gal activities were taking place. Upon arriv-al the police officials went to the secondfloor to a certain room.”The door was apparently already open

when the officers walked in and identifiedthemselves to the suspect asMetro police of-ficers.

Theynoticed several packets of dagga andtik lying scattered on the table and proceed-ed to search the premises.“The officers found 148 packets of dagga,

three bank bags with dagga, seven packetsof tik, three scales and cash to the value ofR1453. They also found the expired asylumdocuments.”

The chairperson of the Parow Communi-ty Policing Forum (CPF, Roger Cannon,says it ismore often thannot foreignnation-als who sell drugs in Parow.

“The police are doing everything theycan, but they face many difficulties, such as

the fact that the suspect needs to be foundto be in possession of the drugs. Secondly,as soon as they arrest someone, anothertakes that dealer’s place. Yet another obsta-cle is that the police arrest someone andthen they are released on bail the next day.Just recently a foreign national was arrest-ed and he quickly managed to get excellentlegal representation.”

According to Cannon there are severaldrug lords operating from the area, whoeven go as far as covering the legal costs of“employees”.

He adds that the “runners” (the men do-

ing the selling) get arrested, but not the peo-ple higher up in the drug trade, so they haveno problem just to employ the next runnerto do the selling.“We are nonetheless very happy with the

community for supplying us and the policewith information about people who are pos-sibly dealing in drugs. Together we canmake a difference,” he concludes.

Williams agrees.“We at Parow police extend our apprecia-

tion towards the community members forthe positive information that resulted in thearrest,” concludes Williams.

Goodwood police on Sunday arrested a 36-year-old suspect for a housebreak-in.

At about 19:25, Constable Steven Drurywas doing patrols when he heard about aburglar being chased by a complainant. Ac-cording to information the suspect waswearing a black hooded top. Drury found asuspect in Kimberley Street and a black topwas lying next to him in the street. At that

time the owner of a house in Wallace Streetarrived and pointed the suspect out as theman who broke into his garage.According to the owner he arrived at his

address in Wallace Street and saw the sus-pect climbing through the garage window.The owner also said that his garage was

die plan om die afskorting te verleng sal niewerk nie. “Hulle kan dit verleng soos wathulle wil, maar iemand sal net elke keerweer ’nmanier vind om daardeur te ry. Hul-le het dieselfde gedoen met die paaie. Elkekeer het hulle net lasplekke in die teer gesiten toe die reën kom, het die lasplekke netweer uitgespoel. A high speed chase ended onMonday whentwo suspects were arrested for possessionof a stolen motor vehicle.

At about 03:35 Sergeant Pumza Mbobiand Constable Justin Mentoor patrolledVoortrekker Road when they drove behindablueMazda.Theofficers could seehowthedriver and passenger both nervouslylooked back at them. They decided to pullover the Mazda, but the driver ignored allthe attempts of the officers. The car sped offin Jakes Gerwel Drive, ignoring a numberof red traffic lights.

The officers eventually pulled the Mazdaover in Beacon Valley in Mitchell’s Plainand the car was tested positively as stolen.

The suspects, 28 and 38, are from Mitch-ell’s Plain where the car was stolen, andwill appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’sCourt for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Application for special votes duringthe upcoming local elections openedon Friday 10 June and closes on Fri-

day 8 July.“It is important to apply early for this

voting right, should you not be able to voteon election day on Wednesday 3 August,”says ward councillor Marian Nieuwoudt.

There are essentially two types of specialvotes – firstly Type 1, were a voter goes totheir local voting district to cast their voteonMonday 1 or Tuesday 2 August, and sec-ondlywhere thevoter receives ahomevisit

from the Independent Electoral Commis-sion (IEC) in order to cast their vote.

“A Type 1 special vote can be applied forby any registered voter who for whateverreason – be it travel, business, or work –will not be able to vote onWednesday 3 Au-gust. Theywill be able to apply for a specialvote and if successful, will be able to casttheir vote at the polling station at whichthey are registered to vote, on the specialvoting days prior to the election,” she ex-plains.

Application for this type of special votecan be done in threeways: an SMS to 32249,an online submission at www.elections.org.za, or a submission of form MEC35 at

the IEC office in Bellville or elsewhere.“A Type 2 special vote is only for the sick

and housebound. In this instance, a voterwouldapply for an IECofficial to visit themat their home on special voting days be-cause they are not mobile and or too sickto vote on election day. People requiring ahomevisitmust reside andbevisited in thevoting district inwhich they are registeredto vote,” she says.

Application for a home visit must bedone using the MEC35 form either in hardcopy and submitted to the IEC office, or us-ing the online form.

“If your application for a special vote issuccessful, you will vote in the following

manner: Your thumbnail is marked withindelible ink, while your ID book isstamped. You will receive the relevant bal-lot papers to be marked in secret andplaced and sealed in an unmarked envel-ope. The unmarked envelope is placed inanother envelope that ismarkedwith yourname, ID number and voting district num-ber. The use of two envelopes is to ensurethe secrecy of your ballot. The outer envel-ope is discarded before counting,” says Ni-euwoudt.

IEC officials will place it in a secure bal-lot box for special votes and your name ismarked off the voters’ roll to indicate thatyou have cast a special vote.

The chance of finding a dirtycarpet in Gareth Sheen’shouse is zero, because he

ownsmore than 400 vacuum clean-ers.Yes, this man is Cape Town’s un-

disputed king of the vacuum clean-er.“I have no idea why vacuum

cleaners. Ever since I could re-member I have had a fascinationwith them,” explains Gareth. “Iown roughly 400 to 450 vacuums.That number is always changingthough. If I am interested in a newvacuum cleaner, I will purchaseone, but I often sell these newerones when I have finished re-searching them.”When Gareth speaks about his

vacuum cleaners, it is clear that hehas a passion for what most peopleonly see as a household cleaningtool.“I like many things about vacu-

um cleaners. In the vintage onesit’s the design. I love working onthem and restoring them to theiroriginal condition. I buff up theplastic and alloy and respray thepaintwork, fit new bearings to themotor or in the case of the reallyold ones regrease the bearings asthey are designed for just that mo-tor. In the newer ones it’s the tech-nology,” enthuses Gareth.He says he was amazed to find

that he was not the only one madabout vacuum cleaners. “I belongto a vacuumcleaner collecters clubbased in America with over 2600members, and that’s just one of

many clubs.”The collection started when he

was about eight years old, but it re-ally started growing about 14 yearsago. Once he starts talking abouthis collection, it’s difficult to get aword in.“I mostly collect pre-90s ma-

chines with the majority of my col-lection coming from the ’40s, ’50s,’60s and ’70s. Dysons are my fa-vourite modern brand of vacuum.I think they completely revolution-ised the vacuum market in 1994. Iown one of the very first Dysoncleaners, a Dc01, and I own the lat-

est – a Dc42. My oldest vacuumcleaner is from 1929 and stillworks. I have some vary rare vacu-ums inmy collectionwhichmostlyconsist of South African designedand manufactured machines likethe Electrolux 404, a machine de-signed here in SouthAfrica, and assuch no information exists on it onthe internet. My grandmother hadone and I searched long and hardto find another and eventually mywife’s aunt from Calvinia foundone for me.“During the 1970s and 1980s

up of companies manufacturingvacuumshere, andevenmoreweredesigned just for our market. Elec-trolux had a huge manufacturingplant in Paarden Eiland,” says Ga-reth.Gareth’s wife, Joanne, finds

On 27 June 1990 Francis August wastold there were complications in herpregnancy and that there was a

chance that her baby girl might be breached.The doctors were concerned that either

the baby or Francis' life could be in danger,but Francis was a fighter and pushedthrough unabated.

Five hours later Crystal was born.Now the 25-year-old Crystal is gearing up

for her 26th birthday by continuing the ex-cellent humanitarian work she has doneover the last four years.

Every birthday she spends five hours ofher time to alleviate the lives of the less for-tunate, an initiative she calls Birthday ofHope.

“It is my way of giving back to the commu-nity. I amayoungwomanaspiring to inspirefuture generations of young girls to riseabove their circumstances and achievegreater heights. Birthday of Hope providesa platform to encourage young ones and givethem hope for a better tomorrow,” she elabo-rates.

This year the Parow Valley resident willbe distributing blankets to Parow ValleyWelfare, the Greyton Red Cross Society, Ge-nadendal Old Age Home and Huis MartinaOld Age Home, but she needs everyone’shelp to get as many blankets as possible.

“I have already managed to get 43 blanketsthrough a social media drive, but my aim isto deliver 200 blankets to the beneficiaries.”

As with her previous four birthdays shewill again spend five hours at an orphanageor an old age home (or even both!)

When asked why she feels the need to helpthe less fortunate and when this realisationoccurred, she answers: “While I was livingin the CBD I always walked past droves ofhomeless people. Some of them even hadchildren. I realised then and there that Ineed to do whatever I can to help people. Ican’t solve their problems, but I can lend ahelping hand.”

When Crystal talks about the desperateneed of others or how much she depends onher mother, her pillar of strength, she cries.

“To have a father and a mother who carefor you, and want to provide you with thebest possible childhood, is a blessing. Thecliché is that charitybegins athome, but thisis incomplete. The City of Cape Town is preparing to trackdown and prosecute callers who abuse its 107Public Emergency Communication Centrenumber.

Of the 532 682 calls answered by emergencyoperators in 2015, 102 217 or 20% were prankcalls.

A look at the monthly statistics reveals anaverage of just over 8500 prank calls amonth,with spikes experienced in January, Apriland August.‘‘The calls range from emergency hoaxes

to the vilest verbal abuse, but also, more dis-turbingly, calls of a very perverse nature. Itis unacceptable that our operators, who arethere to do a very serious job, have to endurethis type of abuse with no recourse except tocut the call,’’ says the City’s Mayco member

for safety and security, JP Smith.While children are routinely blamed for

prank calls, experience has shown that anumberof adults also abuse the system, oftenfor sexually explicit calls.

Calls to the 107 line are free from a Telkomlandline as well as via the 112 number usedby cellphone networks.‘‘Our system allows us to pick up exactly

where the call is coming from. I have in-structed the City’s Special InvestigationsUnit to extract information on the top 10 ha-bitual offenders and lay charges in terms ofnational legislation that makes such prankand hoax calls to an emergency call centrean offence. A fewwell-publicised convictionswill serve as a good deterrent if we can getthem,’’ adds Smith.

dwelms. Ek moes toe my ouers alles vertel.In Januarie 2011 is ek na ’n kliniek virdwelmbehandeling,” sê die man.

Dit is op tye soos Dwelmbewusmakings-week – van 24 tot 28 Junie – dat hy sy eieen ander se gruwelstories onthou.

“Ek het begin branderplankry toe ek 10was en begin sigarette rook op 13. Op 14 hetek en my maats dagga begin rook. Op hoër-skool het ek begin raves bywoon saam metouer vriende en kennis gemaak met anderdwelms soos LSD, buttons, ecstacy, crack enheroïen,” vertel hy.

Iemand anders sê: “Die dwelmprobleemhet bymy al hoe erger geword en ek het alledwelms probeer. Op 40 het heroïen ampermy lewe gekos toe ek vir dood in die hospi-taal gelos is.”

“Ek het begin dwelms gebruik as gevolgvan kleintyd-trauma. Ek was baie sensitief,was vas aan Ma se rokspante en baie bangvir Pa.

“Ek was ses jaar oud toe Ma die huis ver-laat het en Pa al sy woede op my uitgehaalhet. Pa het my baie rondgeruk en gepluk.Ek was bang vir alles en my pa het my viralles blameer. roïen, het ek baie gewig verloor. Op 18 hetek 46kg geweeg.Myouershet iets beginver-moed,maar ek het gesê dit is van akademie-se spanning dat ek nie kan eet nie.

“Hulle het gedink dit is gewone adoles-sente probleme. Ek dink hulle was te skaamen bang om te dink dat hul kind dwelms ge-bruik.” Hy het later vir vier maande opge-hou en baie goed gedoen. Hy het ’n motor-fiets gekry en het “lang ente gery” as hyniks gehad het om te doen nie.

het ek weer heroïen gaan koop en gerook.“Tot vandag toe kan ek dit nie verstaan

Die afrigter van die Belhar-rugbyklub,Bronson Weir, is geen onbekende as dit byrugby-afrigting kom nie. Hy kan 7’s en 15’safrig en is die afgelope ses jaar die breier inBelhar.

“Ek is gebore en getoë in Belhar en het se-wesbydieSekondêreSkoolExcelsior enver-skeie provinsiale en internasionale spanneafgerig, terwyl ek nog steeds by ’n finansiëleinstelling gewerk het. Ek was voorheen byNedbank en is tans by Ou Mutual, een vandie borge van die klub,” sê hy.

Van die spelers wat hy onder hande gehadhet, is Justin Geduld, Cheslin Kolbe, EdwinZass en Dennis Cox in die WP se o.18-span.

Hy was ook die afrigter van die SA sewes-studentespan van 2009 tot 2011, wat die Cen-trale 7’s in Parys enMorokko gewen het. Hyhet ook Kenia Shujaa 7’s afgerig, wat dieAfrikabeker gewen het.

“Excelsior sal my altyd na aan die hart lê,want ek het baie sukses daar behaal. Ek hetook deur Afrika gereis en het afrigting inlande soos Uganda en Kenia gedoen.”Belhar speel in die A-kompetisie van die

WP se Superliga en die klub se sterkpunt issy hardlooprugby. Die klub spog met lojaleondersteuners wat weekliks die span komondersteun, wat bydra tot die span se suk-ses. Belhar het ook al Blitsbokke opgelewer.“Tans oefen vyf klubspelers by die WP se

amateurspan. Vanjaar is my eerste jaar ashoofafrigter van die A-span en my doelwitis om ’n sterkwenkultuur indieklub te skep,wat met dissipline, harde werk en waag-moed gepaardgaan.Ons is nognie daarwaarons wil wees nie, maar hopelik sal alles inplek val,” het Weir gesê.Belhar het nie uitblinkers nie, maar die

span in sy geheel dra by tot die klub se suk-ses. Die klub het ’n paar sleutelspelers ver-loor en hopelik sal die jong spelers hul voete

vind.“Ons gebruik hoofsaaklik spelers uit Bel-

har en omgewing en doen ’n beroep op hulleom by die klub se speelstyl in te koop en bydie klub te bly. Belhar se uiteindelik doel isom in die Gouebekerkompetisie, voorheendie Community Cup, te speel, sodat ons ta-lent op televisie gewys kan word.

“In ons wedstryd teen Tygerberg hetmeeras 1 000 toeskouers kom kyk en dink net watkan gebeur met televisiedekking,” sê hy.Omdat die klub ’n gemeenskapsklub is,

probeer hulle om meer by die omliggendeskole betrokke te raak, maar wil dit op ’ngroter skaal doen. “Diemeeste van die afrig-ters het ’n voldagwerk, wat verhoed dat hul-le by skole betrokke kan raak.“Virmy is dit belangrik dat die jeug inBel-

har moet opkyk na die spelers, sodat hullekan sien daar is beter keuses as bendes endwelms. Wanneer ons Saterdae op die velddraf, gaan dit vir die spelers nie net oor die80minute nie, maar jy is ’n ambassadeur virjou gemeenskap,” sê Weir.
