    esidents in Vredekloof Heights and

surrounds have taken up arms to pro-

    tect their property rights.

This mood was evident when more than

300 residents, in an unprecedented move in

Brackenfell, met at a privately orchestrated

public meeting in Vredekloof Heights on

    Wednesday evening.

    Theobjective of themeetingwasunambig-

    @dezzierorke

A sixteen-year-old school girl was left trau-

matised after being grabbed and held at

    knifepoint last Tuesday.

A learner at Brackenfell High School, the

girl was walking home along Paul Street in

Brackenfell Heights when the incident oc-

    curred at about 14:40.

She was walking alone, but a group of

children was walking behind her and wit-

nessed the robbery, said police spokesper-

    son Warrant Officer Erica Crous.

Two men approached her and asked her

for the time, upon which she took her cell-

phone from her pocket, says Crous.

One of the men took out a knife while the

other grabbed her from behind and demand-

ed she hand over her cell phone.

Gripped in a state of shock, the phone

    dropped out of her hands.

The men grabbed it and ran to a blue ve-

    hiclewhichwas parkednearby. The vehicle,

of which the make is not known to us, then

    sped away, says Crous.

The girl, who was in a state of shock, did

not sustain any injuries, but was supported

by volunteers attached to the Brackenfell

    Police Victim Support unit.

Police are investigating a case of robbery

with a dangerous weapon other than a fire-

    arm, and the investigation continues.

School girl giving the time robbed

    FROM PAGE 1

Headvised residents to have an independent

traffic impact assessment (TIA) done to

    strengthen their objections.

The developer projects only 354 addition-

al vehicles on the surrounding roads during

peak hours, which I believe is not a reasona-

    ble assumption, said concerned resident

Bonita Conradie. The assessment makes no

mention of how the current road infrastruc-

ture would carry this additional load.

Furthermore, there are indications of a

taxi stand being built across the develop-

ment in Brackenfell Boulevard, which is a

    massive concern to residents.

Also worrying, said Nico Fivaz, a resident

fromVredekloof Heights and an architect in

own right, is the fact that developers applied

for 136 parking bays. Where will all these

    vehicles park? he asked.

The TIA indicates that this was justified

by the fact that a future MyCiTi bus route

would be running along this corridor, but

    TygerBurger established that these plans

    may only realise by 2030.

Fivaz said this was the biggest housing de-

velopment he has ever experienced during

his career and that it would undoubtedly

have a negative impact on property values

of homes in the exclusive neighbourhoods of

    Vredekloof Heights and Kleinbron Estate.

Due to its high density this development

is not typical to the area and will also in-

fringe on the privacy of adjoining resi-

    dents, he says.

    Sufficient education infrastructure also

    remains a problem.

To get out of our suburb to take children

to school is already a big problem. We are

currently struggling to gain access to Brack-

enfell Boulevard and De Bron Road due to

high traffic volumes. The bridge on Brack-

enfell Boulevard over the N1 that is used to

travel to Brackenfell High and Primary

School, cant handle all the traffic. It backs

up to De Bron Road and causes further traf-

fic problems in the area, says Conradie.

Resident Shaun Price blames the current

chaos on bad planning by the City of Cape

    Town.

The Andrag land is still not developed,

yet the residential areas have spread north-

wards bymore than two kilometres. Had the

council stopped suburban spread until all

the (dormant) land in between was devel-

oped, we would not have had this chaos, he

    said.

Furthermore council costs in road con-

struction would have been halved and resi-

dential building costs would have been

greatly reduced, allowing for more cash in

commercial spending, which is good for the

    economy.

    @dezzierorke

    A

s jy nog nie n droomhetwat jou

    bangmaaknie, kry een, het die

    skoolhoof, Andr Pretorius,

verlede week in sy afskeidsrede aan ma-

    trikulante ges.

    Die Horskool Brackenfell se ampteli-

    ke afskeidsplegtigheid het Vrydagoggend

by die skool plaasgevind waar sowat 300

sekerheid of opgewondenheid is, weet net

een ding. Jy is van nou af op jou eie. Jy

    onderwysers of vriende plaas nie.

men. Sukses en harde werk gaan hand

aan hand. Onthou dit in die komende weke

wanneer julle laatnag n koppie tee drink

bas. In n moderne lewe word mense baie

ouer, so dalk moet jy besin as jy dink jy

gaan op die ouderdom van 60 aftree.

    Jean-Mark Fuchs, uittredende voorsit-

    Glimlagte by afskeidsrede

ges dit ruik die ene vis. Ons het eers ge-

    dink hy maak vis gaar.

gang, want daarhet n bad indie kombuis

    gestaan en oral was vrieskaste.

Die man wou nie h ons moet die

slaapkamer ingaan nie, maar ons het

daarop aangedring en toe die rakke vol

    perlemoen gesien, vertel sy.

Toe hulle omkyk, was die man net

    skoonveld. Hulle het die verhuringsfirma

gekontak, wat die polisie ontbied het.

Daar het vermoedelik twee swart mans

    gewoon eenvermoedelikwerksaamas tui-

nier, hoewel die huurders Chinese werkne-

mers van Hisense in Atlantis sou wees. Die

huurooreenkoms is vanuit Hong Kong ge-

    sluit.

    mer gevind.

Working on Fire recently trained several community workers as fire safety officers in a bid to

ith the fire season just around the

corner, fire safety has again come

    under the spotlight.

To prevent fire outbreaks, veld fires,

shack and house fires, Working on Fire

    (WOF), a non-government organisation,

took precaution by training several com-

munity workers as fire safety officers.

The training took place on Wednesday 7

October and was held at the Driftsands Na-

    ture Reserve.

    Lauren Howard, spokesperson for WOF,

said WOF together with various stakehold-

ers will in an on-going effort to address the

scourge of fires in the Western Cape and in

particular in informal settlement areas, be

running a series of fire awareness pro-

grammes and be going door to door across

    the province.

    We brought together 110 community

    members from across the Peninsula.

With the various fire safe messages that

come from each fraternity, the community

members could see the importance of being

fire safe, Rayganah Rhoda, a community

    awareness officer, said.

The purpose of the campaigns is to in-

crease the awareness of fire risks and how

communities can mitigate these risks as it

is vital to educate communities and chil-

    dren in this regard.

The awareness drive is initiated by WOF

in corporation with Cape Nature, fire and

rescue, the City of Cape Town, disaster risk

    management, and SANParks.

The communities identified as some of

    thehot spots includeDriftsands andLosAn-

    geles, Ndlovini in Khayelitsha,Mfuleni and

Green Park and its surrounding conserva-

    tion land.

    Numerous unwanted fires have oc-

curred andwith awareness within these ar-

eas we are hoping to educate the communi-

ty in taking ownership and pride in their

    surroundings, Rhoda said.

With this years summer fire season

starting December, we encourage all com-

munity members to be fire safe and encour-

age one another to become custodians of

    their community, Howard said.

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

    I

t doesnt matter that I am deaf. This

is who I am and I am proud of being

able to show others that we are just

as capable as any other person, says Jean-

    Claude Smit from Kraaifontein.

    This 17-year-old smashed boundaries

when he was recently elected, with a majori-

ty vote, as the first ever disabled person to

be none other than Speaker of the Childrens

    Parliament.

And it was precisely this courage and lead-

    ership skills that promptedhisdeputyprinci-

pal at the De La Bat School for the Deaf in

Worcester to nominate him to this pro-

    gramme.

The fifth annual Nelson Mandela Chil-

drens Parliament congregated in the Free

State Legislature from5 to 7October to tackle

a number of serious issues pertaining to the

    protection of children.

    Those included forced childmarriages, the

death of youngboys in initiation schools, and

girls due to illegal abortions, as well as vio-

    lence in schools.

    Huge step for deaf people

For Jean-Claude, this was the ideal oppor-

tunity to correct misconceptions the public

    have about deaf people.

Being deaf and having deaf parents, this

is really a huge step forward for me as well

as other deaf people, especially deaf kidswho

now know anything is possible. In South Af-

rica many people view deafness as an illness

and something that needs to be fixed. But

now I can stand up and say this is not true.

As a deaf person I have many opportunities

and can participate in many things. I am not

afraid to show that I can do anything, he

    says.

He describes the Childrens Parliament as

an amazing opportunity for children to learn

    what governance is all about.

During these few days we participated in

    several commissions and identified many

problems within our schools. Kids from all

the provinces were represented and it was

enlightening to see that communities all over

    the countryareafflictedby similarproblems.

Drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and gang-

sterism are plaguing our youth and I would

like to see the adults at parliament take us

    as children seriously, he says.

The issues discussed over the two-day ses-

sion were drawn up into a declaration and

signed and Jean-Claude is quick to add that

this declaration should not just be seen as a

piece of paper, and that it was drawn up for

    a reason.

The Childrens Parliament is a key pro-

    gramme of Social DevelopmentMonth (Octo-

ber), hosted by the Department of Social De-

velopment to provide a platform for children

to participate in democracy to be seen and

    heard, explains Lumka Oliphant, spokesper-

    son of the department.

And Jean-Claude is adamant that these

    rights be obligated.

I believe that change starts with us, the

youth of South Africa. It will not help if we

sit back and wait for others to do the work.

All of us should work together towards the

same goal, nomatterwho you are, where you

live or what language you speak, he says.

I might be deaf, but not dumb

He also said he wanted to focus on helping

children who face challenges at home.

Many children are exposed to bad things

in their homes, like abuse and parents who

abuse drugs and alcohol. These children then

bring their experiences to school leading to

bullying, peer pressure and the formation of

gangs in schools. We therefore need to find

ways to improve the home environment be-

cause that is where most problems start.

Lumka says the outcome of the Childrens

Parliamentwill now be incorporated into on-

going planning for the advancement of chil-

    drens rights.

In his free time, Jean-Claude loves playing

sports such as swimming and golf and like

any other kid his age, he also loves technolo-

    gy.

I think it is important for deaf kids to be

able to use technology. We are normal like

    anyother person, but becausehearing people

cannot communicate with us, some think we

are deaf and dumb. We can read and write

other languages and we can speak with our

    hands!

    First ever deaf

    Speaker elected

    JeanClaude Smit during the parliamentary

    sessions.

The Family Mediators Association of the

Cape (Famac) is offering a free mediation

week from 26 to 30 October.

    Divorcing and separating couples often

want to avoid contested court proceeding,

but in the strained circumstances it is often

impossible for the couple towork things out

    on their own.

A cheaper alternative to consider ismedi-

    ation.

It is usually much quicker, cheaper and

less stressful than the legal route, and seven

out of ten people are able to reach full agree-

    ment.

    During freemediationweek, a familyme-

diation session can be tried for free, wheth-

er they qualify for legal aid or not.

The mediator will work with the couple

to reduce conflict by helping them consider

the issues to be settled and the options avail-

able to them to facilitate an agreement.

    Theyhelp coupleswork towards financial

settlements and focus on the needs of the

    children, encouraging parental coopera-

    tion wherever possible.

    What is the problem with

    residents who, after their bins

    have been emptied, ignore the

    rubbish which has been left

    behind and littering the

    pavements after the homeless

    people have ravaged their

bins? Yes, I realise it is not the

residents who put it there but

    surely we should all have

    enough pride in our communi-

ty to pick it up and put it back

in our bins? The dustbin men

do not have time to clean up

as they move down the street,

yet it only takes a few minutes

for homeowners to do so. The

    results are obvious rubbish

and debris are left to blow

    about in the wind.

I wonder too, just how many

people take the time to clean

out their dirty bins? I so often

    pass many bins which are

    filthy and very unhygienic.

    Summer is coming and so

    These one-way blocks are

there for a good reason and are

    important for residents who

    live in these blocks.

We go to the trouble to travel

around the block to be law

    abiding and in consideration

    for others safety. We enter

    these blocks from the correct

    direction, only to be confronted

by a motorist speeding from the

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Our driving

    behaviour

    should change

While Transport Month (October) is an

initiative by the South African govern-

ment to create awareness about the

impact of transport on the economy, its

also a good time to highlight issues

    around road safety.

According to a report by the Road

    Traffic Management Corporation, roughly

40 people die on South African roads

every day. There were around 1 368

fatalities over the 2014/2015 festive season

    alone.

The sad reality about this high number

of deaths is the fact that road accidents

    can often be avoided.

    The Automobile Association of South

Africa (AA)s top road safety tip is

always wearing a seatbelt. A close second

is: Never drink and drive. They do

point out however that pedestrians who

are above the legal alcohol limit are just

    as vulnerable as motorists.

Another cause of road deaths is fatigue.

The AA suggests safety breaks every two

hours when travelling long distances to

avoid eye strain and tiredness which

affects a drivers ability to focus.

A few simple changes in our driving

behaviour, especially as we head into the

festive season, could be the major differ-

ence between being involved in an

accident or arriving at your destination

    safely.

While its easy to say Im in a hurry

or its just around the corner, one has

to ask: Is it really worth the risk not to

take a few seconds to make sure you

    arrive safely?

A quilted Christmas tree, the Big 5 and oth-

er uniquely South African festive decor,

landed Tyger Valley Shopping Centre an

award at this years Footprint Awards.

Christmas in Africa, as seen at the cen-

tre last year, was the brainchild of Udumo

    Designs, a non-profit partnership between

    the local community, a neighbouring

church and a few passionate individuals,

with the aimof creating sustainable futures

    through crafts and design.

The process saw the selection of a group

of individuals from Wallacedene in Kraai-

fontein put through a locally designed en-

trepreneurship course to produce a range

of Christmas decorations that would reflect

    a proudly South African Christmas.

By joining hands unskilled and unem-

ployed women were empowered with craft

    skills, explains Udumo founder San-Marie

    Vogel.

This year Vogel and her team are doing

it again, and visitors to the centre can look

forward to another South African Christ-

mas, but with an entirely different look and

    feel.

The designs will be more simplistic and

radiate a Festival of Light theme.
