Our faith is preached, sung, prayed, confessed, and lived. Our theology is also shaped by what we do and what we say when we come together to worship. The actual structure of the liturgy (work of the people) also shapes our faith. You will note the Trinitarian content is proclaimed in several ways throughout the opening hymn, Holy, Holy, Holy. The concept is further underscored by several groups of threes. E.g. the thrice holy, which wert, and art, and evermore shall be, perfect in power, in love, and purity, and in earth, and sky, and sea. The Call to Prayer, Spirit of the Living God, was actually written here at First Presbyterian Church in 1926 by Daniel Iverson, a Presbyterian minister, during an evangelism crusade. He had been impressed by one of the messages and came away to a quiet place (here) to write out the melody and the lyrics. The hymn was sung at the crusade and then printed into leaflets for additional use. The song continued to spread throughout the country and world. The tune we sing tonight is the original tune and text he wrote.

  • In the days of the Older Testament the Israelites were signaled by the sound of the shofar, a rams horn that was played like a trumpet. Of the many interpretations, one was that it signaled a meeting with God. (Moses on Mt. Sinai.) The Call to Worship, whether said or sung functions in the same manner. It is a calling of the congregation to come together to commence our worship of God. During the Organ Meditation, we have had the opportunity to focus our hearts and prepare to meet with God during the next minutes. The text for the Call to Worship is often from the Psalms as many of them were written for this very purpose. The Call to Worship today is based on the second phrase of Now Thank We All Our God and Psalm 95. This summoning to worship is the time when a group of individuals become one community of worshipers. We are no longer many individuals in a sanctuary, but the people of God lifting their voices as one voice in the worship of our great God and Redeemer. We are invited by God the Father into his presence through his Son Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the best invitation youll receive all week! - Dr. Dan Sharp
