ONLINE ADVERTISING: BEWARE OF FRAUDSTERS
Fast scam on PayFast
ESM ERASMUS
@erasmusesme
A
phishing scam in which some people
allegedly lost up to R20 000 has flared
up again one of the latest near vic-
tims a Durbanville resident who advertised
on OLX and Gumtree.
Victims are contacted and told that a Pay-
Fast transaction was made for the adver-
tised items. They then receive an email with
proof of payment, but it is false, warns Greg
Smit, support lead of PayFast.
Mirchelle Snyman told TygerBurger she
advertised some items on OLX and Gumtree
among others an exhaust pipe for a Kawa-
saki motorbike for R4 000.
She was contacted on 16 January by a
woman via OLX by email, stating that she
was interested in buying the exhaust pipe.
The woman said she was working overseas
on a ship, but would like to buy the pipe for
her sons motorbike and wanted to pay via
PayFast, as she considered it the safest.
She said shell have the pipe collected by
courier once shehasprocessedherpayment,
which will include R4 000 for the exhaust
pipe and R1 250 for the courier fee plus a R50
fee to cover the payment at Shoprite.
She asked Snyman to pay over the R1 300
at Shoprite to the courier on her behalf, and
only then the payment will reflect on her
PayFast account.
She then received a proof of payment of
R5 300 from PayFast.
Luckily Snyman contacted PayFast, who
confirmed no payment of R5 300 was made
into her PayFast account. She was also in-
formed that the email of confirmationof pay-
ment sent was false.
I noticed on the emails that it was sent
from trackitforfunds@mail2world.com and
chilo_rique@yahoo.com, Snyman said.
She said she was told by the call centre of
PayFast that it was a scam and that many
victimswere conned out of theirmoney in
one incident R20 000.

Smit of PayFast told TygerBurger people
should always be vigilant and review the
senders email address.
PayFast emails will only come from ad-
dresses endingwith payfast.co.za, he said.
Unfortunately phishing is a very com-
mon attack on the internet and affects any
entity that has built a reputable brand.
Fraudsters use our strong brand to scam
the victim into thinking that they are deal-
ing with a reputable company.
Usually phishing attacks will be directed
towards banks and payment providers, he
said.
The way that this scam is conducted us-
ing our brand is as follows: A seller on sites
such as Gumtree will be contacted by a buy-
er who insists on paying using PayFast, and
requests that they register an account on
PayFast to receive the payment.
Once the sellerhas registeredanaccount,
the scammer will contact them saying they
have made the payment.
The seller will receive a fake email stat-
ing that they have received funds through
PayFast. In this email the seller is requested
to send confirmation of delivery to PayFast
before the funds are released.
The seller will send out their items as re-
quested although no payment was actually
made. The scammer receives the item and
the seller never receives the money.
According to Smit this is not a new scam.
Fraudsters have been falsely using the Pay-
Fast brand for the past couple of years, and
I am sure for a longer period using other sys-
tems such as PayPal.
Judging from the calls and emails that
PayFast receives concerning this scam, the
majority of people call us before they send
out their item.
This scam flares up randomly through
the course of the year. The best defence
against this and any other phishing attempt
is education and that the more people who
are aware of this kind of scams andhow they
operate, the better.
We have implemented strong email secu-
rity mechanisms to prevent the spoofing of
our emails and are currently implementing
the latest enhancements to these to further
reduce the ability for fraudsters to spoof our
legitimate domain.
This makes it harder for fraudsters to
fake our From address, but a customer still
needs to check the email address fromwhich
an email comes and when they reply, where
it is going to, as these could be completely
different to our legitimate addresses.
Something to remember, is that you
should never fully trust email messages.
It is sad that it is so, but you have to be
vigilant on the internet where you deal at
arms length, so we would always advise
caution when concluding deals via email,
he warns.

W
ill the choirs sing, or the cyclists cy-
cle? This is the proverbial million
dollar question after WP indoor cy-
clists training at the Bellville Velodrome
got word last Thursday they will have to
make way for a choir association to host its
annual five-week competition
instead.
According to the principal fa-
cilitymanager of the velodrome,
an urgent application was
brought by the Cape Malay
Choir Board to host their annual
event in the indoor cycling are-
na from 13 February until 20
March.
The choristers former event
locationwas theGoodHope Cen-
tre in Cape Town, but the centre
is currently closed to them.
According to Johan Smith,
track director of the WP Track
Cycling Association, their orga-
nisation received a short email
from the principal facility offi-
cer informing them of this new
development, and that they
could only have the facility back
for training theweekend after 20
March.
Events clash over fiveweek period
The principal facility officer had replied
to an initiating email from Abdul Davids,
a member of the facility committee on be-
half of the cyclists and the representative of
theBellville andTygerberg cycling clubs, in
which Davids outlines their training plans.
In his email to the principal facility offi-
cer, Davids spells it out that the cyclists
need to train at the facility the only indoor
cycling track of its kind besides a dilapidat-
ed substitute track in Paarl and how host-
ing the choirs until mid-March would im-
pact on their own training schedule and
planned events.
The conundrum is that the choirs annual
five-week event coincides with the cyclists
own events, and the two are seemingly ir-
reconcilable due to exit infrastructure and
the setting up of emergency stairs across
the tracks to accommodate the choristers,
which will make cycling impossible, ac-
cording to the principal facility officer.
The provincial cyclists are set to compete
in the WP track championship on 11 and 12
March, followed by the nationals in Port
Elizabeth only two weeks later, needing as
much training time as possible, according
to Davids.
Memorial run also at risk
Also, they have an annual memorial run
for JeanneNel, a cyclist who died on the Ve-
lodrome track two years ago, in February
eachyear, with this years event planned for
16 February.
The principal facility officer thenwent on
to offer the cyclists the last weekend of
March to host this memorial event.
Smith says this is a big event also requir-
ing loads of planning. This is a huge and
wildly popular race. Jeannewas a great guy
and one would be able to understand if the
tracks werent available due to develop-
ment, but this is ridiculous; why cant they
accommodate both organisations?
What I find weird is that the pavilion
with its stands is available to the choirs to
practise on; why do they need the inside cy-
cling track? And why do they need to put
steps over the track? Theres more than
enough space for both organisations to
share the facility. Even when
there is more than 1 000 people
at once, there is no need to erect
stairs, he says.
But the choristers are as desti-
tute. Since they received notice
late last year that the City plans
to privatise the Good Hope Cen-
tre, they have very few alterna-
tives to host their own hugely
popular competition.
The Cape Malay Choir Board
had leased theGoodHopeCentre
for its competition since the cen-
tres inception, as that venue
easily accommodates up to 5 000
people and is very central.
The Citys Mayco member for
community services and special
projects, Belinda Walker, says
she is personally looking into
the matter.
I am investigating this mat-
ter personally to ensure that the
arrangements around the use of
the velodrome best accommodate the needs
of both the choirs andcyclists as far aspossi-
ble.
I have asked the sport, recreation and
amenities department to provide informa-
tion on what times the facility is available
for use by the choir and what engagement
with the cycling organisations and clubs
has taken place thus far, she says.
Wherever possible, the City does active-
ly encourage our social facilities to become
increasinglymultifunctional and able to ac-
commodate multiple users.
We want our sporting and recreational
facilities to create maximum social benefit
for communities and will always try to ac-
commodate multiple user groups.

langs die pad en wag op n nuwe slagoffer.
Pieter Swart (57), n tegnologie-onderwy-
ser en departementshoof van geboue, terrei-
ne en borge aan die Laerskool Durbanville,
is Sondag 17 Januarie omstreeks 09:30 met
n baksteen aangerand nadat n rower n dik
gewone saal oorgeplaas nadat hy bykans n
week in die Mediclinic Durbanville se ho-
sorgeenheid behandel is.
Hy het op die R312 gaan ry om te oefen vir
die Kaapstad-fietstoer in Maart. Uit die le-
sing op sy fiets se spoedmeter blyk dit hy het
teen sowat 40 km/h gery toe hy van sy fiets
geval het.
Hyhet syneus, beide oogbanke enwangbe-
hy baie beter as n week gelede. Swart is ver-
ging totmoord. Volgens inligting is niemand
nog in hegtenis geneem nie, maar word lei-
drade steeds opgevolg.
Die polisie doen ook meer patrollies van
die pad en omgewing.

The water crisis in the Western Cape is
not over and the City warns that Capeto-
nians not adhering to restrictions can re-
ceive spot fines or even jail time.
Every household and every business
enterprise can actively play a part in sav-
ingwater during this excessively hot and
dry summer, Clive Justus, chairperson
of subcouncil 4, said at the January sub-
council meeting.
Level two regulations have been effec-
tive since 1 January. This means the
price of water increased especially for
large domestic consumers, who now pay
more for the same amount of water used
before the restrictions a measurement
taken to encourage water savings.
Due to the Citys increasing block tar-
iff for domestic consumers, this will have
very little effect on small consumers and
water efficient households. On the other
hand, large domestic consumers will pay
a significantly higher marginal price for
water, according to a frequently asked
questions (FAQ) fact sheet published by
the City.
According to Ernest Sonnenberg, the
CitysMaycomember for utility services,
the City has approximately 650 000 me-
ters to read, and this cannot all take place
on one day.
Because of this, theCity calculates the
daily average between two meter read-
ings, determines the daily average, and
apportions the water consumption
across the two billing periods, he says.
Justus asked residents of subcouncil 4
to use water wisely.
The restriction notice indicates that
where other sources of water (i.e. not
drinking water from municipal supply)
are used, a notice to this effect must be
erected in a position clearly visible from
apublic thoroughfare. In addition,water-
ing gardens, parks, open spaces, etc. with
alternative water resources such as har-
vested rain water, grey water (re-used),
treated effluent water, well points and
boreholes, is allowed only before 09:00 or
after 16:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Saturdays, he said.
Failure to adhere to the water restric-
tions may lead to spot fines. of up to
R1 500, issued by the City of Cape Town.
Repeat offenders could be summonsed
and be liable for prosecution resulting in
a fine of up to R10 000, or imprisonment.
Water crisis not over
Shadows on the beach: Over 600 people braved a moderate South Easter and were
treated to a perfect sunset along the stretch of beach between Big Bay and Eerste Steen
during the first Full Moon Walk for 2016 hosted by Clean C. Walkers donated baking items

nother huge bluegum tree has fallen
acrossBowlersAvenue inDurbanville.
A resident, Campbell Rae, visited his
mother in one of the complexes when the in-
cidenthappenedaround lunch timeonSatur-
day 16 January.
The last incident like this was a few years
ago but this time the tree has fallen across
the road, he said.
This followed the removal of quite a lot of
bluegum trees in November 2013. All the re-
maining trees were trimmed as well.
A total of 56 bluegum trees were removed
in Bowlers Avenue and along Racecourse
Road then for safety reasons after several
incidents of falling trees and branches.
In one incident a huge bluegum tree in
Bowlers Avenue fell without any warning
just missing a house.
No further cutting of bluegum trees in
Bowlers Avenue seems to be on the City of
Cape Towns agenda in the near future.
However, according to Belinda Walker,
Mayco member for community services and
special projects, theCityhasplans to trim the
bluegum trees along Wellington Road all
the trees alongWellington Road and between
Skool Street and Langeberg Road, as well as
along Racecourse Road.
TheCityParks department is currently in
the process of sourcing quotes for the work
to be undertaken. It is anticipated the work
will be completedbefore the rainy seasonand
winter gets under way, she said.
Treeswill also be trimmedwhere planned
routinemaintenancehasbeen scheduled and
where there are any specific requests and/or
complaints about particularly problematic
trees that are preventing visibility.
TheCity Parks departmentwill avoid top-
ping, Walker said.

lcohol screenings will now be done at
any random time day or night to
ensure safer roads in the City, traffic
official Desir Benadie warned at a sub-
council meeting held last week.
Benadie said this initiative was one of
many strategies to be implemented in 2016
to improve service delivery in Cape Town.
Statistics are alarming. Driving under
the influence of alcohol is bynomeansprob-
lematic during night time hours only.
In recent months, countless daytime
drivers have been found guilty of this of-
fence, especially in the mornings when
drivers are still under the influence from
the previous nights drinking, she said.
Such screenings will be done at major
roadblock operations around the clock.
Apart from this project the City is ap-
pointing 60 new traffic officers city wide.
Along with these new appointments, the
department has also requested additional
unmarked vehicles to monitor moving vio-
lations in the far northern areas of Kraai-
fontein and Brackenfell, she said.
Apart from normal operations a special-
ised taxi unit will also be deployed to focus
on issues such as roadworthiness, illegal
operations and permits.

Snake bites rife this summer
The presence of puff adders (pictured) and Cape cobras has seen an increase in the number of
snake bites in pets, says a local veterinary hospital with several branches across the Peninsula.
Snake bite treatment is a very expensive affair, but can save the life of a pet.
MICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
S
nakes soaking up the sun and slither-
ing away from veld fires often end up
in residential backyards,making them
a serious adversary to domestic pets.
Because of this, veterinarians Ryan Nor-
rie andNolanMoss at the TygerbergAnimal
Hospital say their hospital has recently seen
an increase in the number of snake bites in
pets.
We have definitely seen an increase in
snake bites this year, Moss says. There
seems to be an increase across the Cape Pen-
insula.
He sayswhilenoaccuratenumbers areyet
available, the largest chunk of the bites are
taking place close to Table Mountain.
The reasons are simple, Moss says.
Snakes aremore active in hot, dryweather,
which may account for the increased num-
bers recently.
Fleeing to gardens, houses
Norrie agrees: Snakes are cold-blooded
animals that raise their body temperature
by lying in the sun or lower it by crawling
into the shade. So this means snake bites
will be less likely to happen in winter time
as the snakes are hibernating.
Also something to think about is all of the
fires we are experiencing you find that
most wildlife will move to safer areas, and
this could be your back garden or even your
house, Norrie says.
They have seen mostly Cape cobra or puff
adder snake bites over the last two months,
Moss adds.
He explains a bit more about the chemical
reactions causedby the two toxins: Cape co-
bras are neurotoxic and cause paralysis of
the respiratory muscles, leading to death.
Puff adders are cytotoxic and bites cause se-
vere tissue swelling, with fluid, blood and
protein loss.
In both cases anti-venom treatment redu-
ces the severity of clinical signs but must be
given in the early stages, Moss says.
According to him, cobra bite victims need
to be placed on a ventilator, normally for one
to three days, and they require intensive
care, while puff adder victims often develop
shock and multiple organ failure, requiring
intensive care and usually multiple plasma
and blood transfusions.
And treatment is not cheap.
The cost of treatment ... can escalate be-
yond R30 000 in some cases. Many animals
unfortunately die before they are presented
to the clinic.
Moss adds cobra bites that are treated ag-
gressively and early, usually have a more
promising outcome, but not so with puff ad-
der bites.
Evenwith aggressive treatment the prog-
nosis forpuff adderbites is alwaysguarded,
Moss says. I recently treated a staff mem-
bers dog that required four blood transfu-
sions, six plasma transfusions, and took
over one month to fully recover, he says.
Norrie says theyve seen some really sad cas-
es, but its not all doom and gloom.
Most of the time if a pet pulls through
from such an attack there are hardly any aft-
er-effects, but possible scarring or muscle
loss from dead tissue has been seen.
You wont see it very often, but if a pa-
tient was bitten on an extremity and to save
the pets life, amputation can be an option,
he says.
We have seen some heartbreaking cases
where the outcome was death. In one case
we had two rottweilers that were bitten by
the same snake andboth dogswere put down
due to their state, says Norrie.
Never confront a snake
He addswhen pets are bitten, owners need
to keep clear of the snakes to avoid being bit-
ten themselves. So how can owners avoid
pets getting bitten?
There is no way of avoiding snake bites
at home short of permanently housing the
pet, says Moss.
Pet owners need to be aware of the risks
when taking their animals on walks, and
adds they need to learn to identify the two
snakes.
Neither snake is particularly aggressive.
Pet owners should never attempt to confront
a snake, Moss says.
Once bitten, time is of the essence, espe-
cially where the Cape cobra is concerned.
Only a few veterinary practices stock an-
ti-venomdue to its high cost, and fewer prac-
tices still have 24-hour care and ventilators,
for the same reason.
Pet owners should acquaint themselves
with practices that are able to treat snake
bites. If a pet is bitten by either snake, they
should immediately be transported to a 24-
hour facility that possesses a ventilator and
stocks anti-venom.
Norrie says their facility is one of few that
stocks the required anti-venom and is open
at all hours. The anti-venom we have on
stock is the same used on humans. Please
note that it is a very expensive medication.

Donate breastmilk to local hospitals
I
n the high-tech world of the modern neo-
natal ICU there is no substitute for breast
milk. When a vulnerable babys mother
is unable to supply breast milk, donated
breast milk can offer this life-saving gift
from another mother.
Neonatologist Dr Alan Horn of Groote
Schuur Hospital says: I firmly believe that
the practice of milk banking is still in its in-
fancy, globally and especially in South Afri-
ca. I expect it will steadily increase in pro-
file.
Donating breast milk is an act that in-
volves the least pain and themost gain, com-
pared to any other human tissue or organ
donation. It is potentially life-saving and is
worth more than equipment or staff. The
term milk bank is perfect it simultane-
ously describes the safety and the value of
donated milk.
Milk Matters is such a breast milk bank
devoted to saving the lives of primarily pre-
mature babies in neonatal ICUs who do not
have access to their own mothers milk. It
has depots in locations around the city, in-
cluding Brackenfell, Durbanville, Milner-
ton, Panorama and Parow.
The need for donor milk is mainly when
a mother is too ill to provide breast milk or
is unable to physically be with or regularly
visit her baby in hospital. Donor milk may
also be needed for a short time in the case
of multiple births such as triplets, when the
mothermay initiallynothave enoughbreast
milk for her babies.
Already the demand for donormilk far ex-
ceeds supplies and requests from doctors for
donor milk continue to increase.
MilkMatters, a registered non-profit orga-
nisation, started providing donor breast
milk to the neonatal ICUs of Cape Towns
biggest state hospitals in 2003. To date 30 hos-
pitals, in both the state and private sector,
have received donormilk fromMilkMatters
and in addition the organisation has helped
five hospitals set up their own in-housemilk
banks. Most of the donormilk goes to babies
in state hospitals, where the need is highest.
Since just 50ml of breast milk can feed a
baby of less than a kg for 24 hours, mothers
do not need to donate large quantities of
breast milk to make a significant impact.
Some donor mothers make once-off dona-
tions of stockpiled milk that is not required
for their own baby, whilst othermothers do-
nate for periods varying from a few weeks
to a year or more.
Milk Matters provides donors with sterile
containers, which can be collected from one
of the 25depots,wherebatches of frozenmilk
can also be delivered. All milk is pasteur-
ised.
MilkMatters, a registered non-profit orga-
nisation, relies on donations from individu-
als and organisations both to maintain the
current service and to expand.

matters.org.

A motor vehicle, if driven
recklessly, inconsiderately or
under the influence of alcohol
or drugs, is a lethal weapon
it takes lives, both guilty and
innocent (victims), as borne
out by our road traffic collision
data. In most cases, road users
wilfully disobey our adequate
road traffic laws. Offenders
found guilty of contravening
any of the aforementioned
offences seldom, if ever,
receive suitable sentences.
Government does not take
road deaths seriously if they
did, the annual collision/death
rate on our roads should have
decreased ages ago.
In my view, the following
needs to be implemented :
1. Dedicated traffic courts in
all major centres: Staff (magis-
trates/prosecutors) to receive
specific training with regards
to the road traffic ordinance/
regulations etc. Cases must be
speedily dealt with.
2. Law enforcement: Traffic
officers must operate on a 24
hour duty roster as SAPS do.
Currently law enforcement
officers have the latest and
best technology at their
disposal including vehicles,
but most go off duty at
22:00/23:00, except during road
blocks. Visibility on patrol is
vital.
3. State laboratories for
testing blood samples: Every
major centre must have such a
centre. Private laboratories
(with the necessary checks and
balances) can also be roped in.
4. Sentencing drunk and
reckless drivers: First time
offenders found guilty- 6 month
imprisonment without the
option of a fine. Harsh? Yes,
but the carnage requires this.
We the citizens demand
urgent action right now! The
excuse of insufficient funds
and staff shortages must now
be changed to we will immedi-
ately make funds available.
The proposed points system is
long overdue, but how will

Municipal water tariffs in-
creased on and from 1 January.
I have just received my
December account and the
meter was read on 21 December!
That leaves 10 days usage as
carry-over to the January
accounts higher tariff. Is this
deliberate?
I have a question for the
municipality: What are you
going to do about this?
ACCOUNT NO: 131275974
Amanda Glen
Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral
committee member for utility
services of the City of Cape
Town, responds: The City
has approximately 650 000
meters to read, and this
cannot all take place on one
day. Because of this, the
City calculates the daily
average between two meter
readings, determines the
daily average, and appor-
tions the water consumption
across the two billing peri-
ods. In the case of this
customer, their daily average
consumption for 10 days will
be calculated according to
level 1 tariffs and the re-
mainder (after 1 January)
will be calculated according
to level 2 tariffs.

Nice to the point letter, Ian
(Making our lives on the road
difficult, TB, 20 January).
Lives will not be saved by
threats and lack of action.
When last did you see law
enforcement on the roads of
Brackenfell for instance?
Road safety: What
dowewant?
As a motorist who has to pass
through the Fairtrees/Vyge-
boom intersection almost daily
but not at peak times I fully
concur with Lizs sentiments
(Traffic lights: who can help
us here?, TB, 20 January).
The lights stay green for far
too long, causing motorists
backed up at the red lights to
get frustrated, some of whom
eventually drive through
against the red.
Two e-mails to the relevant
City of Cape Town department
have elicited no response or
action very disappointing for
a city which likes to proclaim
that it works for us. When it
comes to traffic matters, that is
definitely NOT the case.

SLICE OF LIFE
Savingwater:
howwise are
you really?
The message over the last few months
has been clear some parts of the
country are facing a drought and dam
levels are low; we need to save water!
In Cape Town the City imposed strict
water restrictions, even going as far as
promising to fine households and busi-
nesses that dont save at least 20%. The
latter has left a bitter taste in many a
household, especially those that have
been living water wise before the water
restrictions were imposed.
If youre already not opening a tap to
water your garden, recycling your bath
water into the flower beds, catching the
first few drops of cold shower water in a
bucket to use for cleaning the dishes
later and keeping the swimming pool just
full enough so the pump can run, then
what more can you do to save?
Water wise or not, we dont realise how
much water we use (and let go to waste)
on a day-to-day basis.
Its only once you start counting the
litres to fill the sink, boil the kettle and
flush the toilet, not to mention use in
your daily hygiene routine and for
drinking water, that reality sinks in and
you realise how much your household
consumes not saving as much as you
thought you did.
The fact is, water is a precious re-
source and if we dont try to save more,
we are in line to suffer more. So next
time, before you open a tap, think ... and
keep living water wise even after the
rains have come and the water restric-
tions have gone.

save lives they must place more
visible mobile law enforcement
on the tar!
On Old Paarl Road taxis pass

What do we want?
Its a fallacy that speed kills.
It has no mind or soul.
It is attitude that kills, or
lack of it in traffic control. We
need visible law enforcement to

authorities will come in the
increase of fine income and to
the public of saved lives and

Licence renewal also needs a

fter current Mrs Cape Town
Sunette Nieuwoudt, wife of
popular Afrikaans singer
Hugo Nieuwoudt, last week unex-
pectedly and for unknown reasons
stepped down from the title, Diane
Nel, the 2014 title holder from
Brackenfell, took over the reigns
again.
Organisers made the announce-
ment last week.
It is with much regret that we
announce that Sunette Nieuwoudt
has stepped down as Mrs Cape
Town 2015, due to a difficult time
that she is currently experiencing.
We wish her all the best and will
keep her in our prayers. Mrs Cape
Town 2014, Diane Nel, will succeed
Sunette as Mrs Cape Town for
2015, said Juanita Smit from the
Role Models Foundation.
According to Smit, Nel agreed to
complete the 2015 reign after it
came to light that not the first or
second runners-up were able to
stand in for Nieuwoudt.
Nel said it cameas a shock toher.
When the directors ofRoleMod-
els contactedme onMondaymorn-
ing (last week), it came as a sur-
prise as I knew that the first prin-
cess would have been a good
candidate.
Iwas told that she gracefully de-
clined because of personal obliga-
tions and the title was offered to
me.
Never have I imagined that
something like this could happen,
but at the same time Im proud to
know that I can do this with the
support of my family, friends, sup-
porters and my sponsors. Thank
you for all the phone calls, SMSs
and messages I received these past
24 hours. Thank you to each of you
supporting me once again in this
life changing journey, she said on
her Facebook page.
Smit said Nel was the obvious
choice due to the exceptional job
she did during her reign in 2014.
What impressed me most was
the fact that she continued with
her charity work, visiting all our
projects even after her year end-
ed, said Smit.
Thank you to Diane for being
willing to step in to support the
projects of Role Models Founda-
tion.The sashandcrownwill bebe-
stowed upon Diane in due course.
Nieuwoudt declined to com-
ment.
Hardly back in the saddle, Nel
was on her way to Worcester on
Wednesday to hand over a cheque
of R86 000 to the Eden School for
special needs children on behalf of
philanthropists Phil and Annetjie
Anderson, who currently live and
work in the city ofAl-Khobar in Sa-
udi Arabia.
The Andersons took up the
plight of this school more than a
year ago after reading in Tyger-
Burger online about Nels charity
work in Worcester.
Since then they have succeeded
in raisinganamount ofR225 000 for
the school by organising several
fund-raising projects in their expat
community to this end.
One night Phil and his friends
dressed up as women and collected
money from local social clubs in
the international compound.
On thisnight theyalmost raised
R20 000. On another occasion we
had a fun run and I also took up a
part time job as bar lady over
weekends of which this entire sala-
ry went into the fund, says Annet-
jie, a specialised nursing sister in
neonatology and divisional direct-
or for Womens Health Services at
the SAAD specialised hospital.
The Andersons were elated to
hear of the gratitude the school ex-
pressed.
It makes all the hard work
worth our while, they said.
School secretary Avril Farao
says they are dependent on funds
from outside as this school is not
fully subsidised and parents pay
minimal fees.
The money made it possible to
get many projects, like the schools
rural transport programme, up
and running again.

Thanks, but more
needed: Richard Bauer
(centre) and Gareth Wyeth
delivered donations collected
by the Sonstraal Heights
community to the Volunteer
Wildfire Services (VWS) fire
fighters based in Newlands
on Sunday after Richards
mother Lyn called for help
on Facebook. Checkers
Cobble Walk also donated
water and Energade. VWS
are grateful for the supplies,
but have indicated that they
still need nonperishables
like AAA batteries. Anybody
who would still like to help
can drop their donations
into the open tinted window
at 42 Verdi Boulevard.
