The Hamilton robotics team filled the Hamilton HighSchool IMC room June 4 as part of a formal recognition atthe School Board meeting.

There are more than 70 members on the robotics team, which is formally called Charger Robotics Team 537.

During the teams most recent season, ChargerRobotics earned the Chairmans Award at the LakeSuperior Regional and qualified for the FIRSTChampionship.

Advisor Lori Hinytz explained the Chairmans Award isthe highest honor a team can receive and is bigger thanrobot winning a competition.

It celebrates the whole team from inception to the cur-rent members, Hinytz said.

Hinytz later introduced adult mentors for the program.

Team leader Alyssa Rebensburg, a four-year teammember, explained there are 73 student members on theteam. She added that 88 percent of the teams alumni havepursued careers in science and technology.

According to Rebensburg, more than 55 companiesprovided sponsor support this past season and the pro-gram has served as a mentor for 13 other high schoolteams.

During the programs history, Rebensburg said Chargerrobotics honors have included three regional ChairmansAwards, three Engineering Inspiration Awards, threeJudges Awards, two Gracious Professionalism Awards, eight Entrepreneurship Awards and a Rockwell Innovationand Control Award.

xclusively on volunteer community serv-e, for helping to raise nearly $20,000y co-chairing (with classmate Alexaorgan) a school team for the charityalk.

Schweiss learned of the honor via aell phone call from her principal Coreyolla.

I was like, Why is the principal call-g me? Am I in trouble? she recalledith a laugh. Then I found out about theward and I was really excited and felt soonored. It was pretty awesome.

The actual event went as well as shecould have hoped, said Schweiss, notingthat along with the actual relay, the dayincluded a wide variety of activities suchas Zumba, a rock-climbing wall, fieldgames and a dunk tank.

It was great, she said. We did notexpect a turn out as huge as it was. It was

so cool getting the community and highschoolers together for such an amazingcause, for an issue that affects everyone.

Germantown closed the door on severalopportunities by Stevens Point to break the

game open, as pitcher Amanda Witzlibrecorded five strikeouts to end innings whilerecording 13 strikeouts over seven-plusinnings.

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, isthe name given to emancipation day byAfrican-Americans in Texas. On that dayin 1865 Union Major-General GordonGranger read General Orders, No.3 tothe people of Galveston. It stated:

"The people of Texas are informedthat, in accordance with a proclamationfrom the Executive of the United States, allslaves are free. This involves an absoluteequality of personal rights and rights of

property between former masters andslaves, and the connection heretoforeexisting between them becomes thatbetween employer and hired labor. Thefreedmen are advised to remain quietly attheir present homes and work for wages."Large celebrations on June 19 began in1866 and continued regularly into theearly 20th century. The African-Americans treated this day like the Fourthof July and the celebrations containedsimilar events. In the early days, the cele-bration included a prayer service, speak-

ers with inspirational messof the emancipation proclafrom former slaves, food, regames, rodeos and dances
