The Going Green Committee atommunity Memorial Hospitalwhichegan in the summer of 2008has under-ken many initiatives to stay as green asossible.
The group began by assembling hospi-l representatives involved in the waste, eaning, energy usage, food preparationnd medical supply areas. They first brain-ormed to see what they had alreadyccomplished and then looked ahead toture changes.
Some of these efforts include:
CMH began recycling surgical blueraps (the wraps that are on the sterilized
equipment in surgery) and hard health careplastics (irrigation bottles, gauze contain-ers, etc.) in October 2012.
In November, a large project involv-ing the purchase of new beds, tables andphones for patient rooms was successfullycompleted. The project has allowed staff toperform their jobs more efficiently whileimproving the patient experience. It alsoincluded ways to repurpose or recycle theitems that were removed. When more than150 new beds were brought in, the oldbeds were traded back to Green River
Medical, a company that specializes inredistribution for used medical equipment.
The old beds went to the DominicanRepublic; they were distributed in andaround the Santo Domingo area to smallhospitals and clinics.
This spring, the hospital will bereplacing the parking lot lights on the hos-pital campus with new LED technology. They will only use about half the energythat the existing lights use and still give offthe same light.
For the past 30 years, kitchen greasehas been saved and picked up to be madeinto soap.

The Hamilton School District representa-e to the WIAA will be voting against a pro-
osal to allow basketball and volleyballoaches to have unlimited contact with theirayers over the summer.
During a brief presentation to the Schooloard April 9, District Athletic Directorichael Gosz summarized several items thatll be discussed at the WIAA annual meeting
n April 24. Basketball and volleyball coach-
are limited in the number of days during thefseason where they have contact with theirhletes, and one proposal would end those
mits.Out of season contact is just another
ng to put on our coaches, which burns themut, Gosz said. Its another burden on our
families and our kids, another expectationthey have to do something.
Gosz added that I dont believe thats inthe best interests of our student-athletes andfamilies in our communities.
The district will support other proposedmeasures, including:
Allowing softball and baseball coachesto issue protective equipment for open gymsand leagues during the school year;
Allowing cross country athletes to delayreporting for non-school training or competi-tion until the first competition; and,
Would make an athlete who appears ina commercial or advertisement ineligible untilthe violation has been rectified.
