    SURVIVORS DAY

From family members to close friends, veryone knows someone whose life has beenuched by cancer. On Sunday, June 2, thou-nds of people around the world will gather to

bserve the 26th annual National Cancerurvivors Day. Hundreds of communities acrosse U.S. and abroad will hold celebrations ons day to honor cancer survivors and showat there is life after a cancer diagnosis ands worth celebrating.

National Cancer Survivors Day is a cher-hed annual worldwide celebration of life. It ise one day each year that we pause to honorveryone who is living with a history of cancerincluding Americas nearly 14 million cancerrvivors. "A survivor is anyone living with astory of cancer from the moment of diagno-

through the remainder of life," according toe National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation.

NCSD provides an opportunity for cancerrvivors to connect with other survivors, cele-ate milestones, and recognize the healthcare

providers, family, and friends who have sup-ported them along the way. It is a day for can-cer survivors to stand together and show theworld that life after a cancer diagnosis can bemeaningful, productive, and even inspiring.

NCSD activities will be as diverse as thecommunities where the events are being heldand will include parades, carnivals, walks, races, art exhibits, health fairs, inspirational programs, and more. There will be laughter and tears, shouts of joy and moments of quiet reflection, hope for the future and strength to endure today, and maybe even a little music and dancing.

The National Cancer Survivors DayFoundation, administrator for the celebration, isencouraging everyone to participate in theircommunitys event. To locate the one nearest

you, check with your local cancer treatmentcenter, hospital, or American Cancer Societyoffice.

"When most people hear the word can-cer, they automatically think the worst," says

Foundation spokesperson, Laura Shipp. "But thetruth is that more people are living longer andbetter quality lives after cancer than everbefore. National Cancer Survivors Day is anopportunity for these cancer survivors to cometogether and celebrate this new reality in can-cer survivorship. There is life after cancer. Andthats something to celebrate."

NCSD started in the United States in 1987and is now celebrated worldwide in countriesincluding Canada, Australia, India, SouthAfrica, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Italy, andMalaysia, according to Shipp.

The nonprofit National Cancer SurvivorsDay Foundation provides free guidance, edu-cation, and networking support to hundreds ofhospitals, support groups, and other cancer-

related organizations that host NationalCancer Survivors Day events in their communi-ties. The Foundations primary mission is tobring awareness to the issues of cancer sur-vivorship in order to better the quality of life forcancer survivors.

Cancer survivors may face physical, emo-tional, social, and financial challenges as aresult of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Many are confronted with limited access to spe-cialists, a lack of information about promisingnew treatments, inadequate or no insurance, difficulty finding employment, and psychosocialstruggles.

"To say that cancer is challenging is anunderstatement," says Shipp. "But it is a chal-lenge that millions of people 14 million in theU.S. alone are overcoming. Though life maynot look the same after a cancer diagnosis,

these survivors are showing us that life aftercancer can be rewarding, exciting, and filled

    with joy."The National Cancer

Foundation, along with the NCal sponsors Bristol-Myers SquiCancer magazine, and Lillyencouraging a greater commitquality of life issues for cancer resources, research, and inawareness are needed to improlife of cancer survivors," says of advances in modern medicvivors are now living much longsis. However, long-term survivown unique challenges. We nter job of addressing the haface beyond treatment."

    Leading up to the event,

urges everyone cancer surporters alike to spread the mis life after cancer, and it's sobrate. The following are sugyour social media sites.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have had a gold crown for 30years in my back bottom molar and it now has a littleworn away spot on the top of it. The toothunderneath does not have a root canal, should I getit repaired (gold foiling) or do I have to get a wholenew crown. The dentist seems to think he can foil it,what should I do?

Dear Mary Ann, the fact that your dentist doesgold foils tells me he is an older dentist that has theskill to place a nice small gold restoration.

Most dentists today do not know how to do directgold fillings anymore as it is no longer taught in

dental school. If the price is reasonable you could do a repair but

if they feel the crown needs to be replaced then youmay want to consider that. Chances are a meticulousdentist that offers gold fillings would not suggestthat restoration unless the rest of the crown margins, contours and occlusion were good.

Go for the gold! It's better than plugging it withSilver.

Dear Dr. Winter, I understand that deepcleanings can close or reduce the gaps in one's gumline. Is the gap improved because the gums shrinkup (thereby exposing more tooth)? Or is the gapimproved because the gum now adheres to thecleaned tooth surface?

Dear Sue, Deep cleanings allow for bacterialremoval, biofilm removal, soft tissue healing andshrinkage of inflamed tissues. These tissues withtheir attachment apparatus will attach to the healthyroot surface where the surface of the root is clean, healthy and free of restorations. It will not preventgaps of any type. Tissues that are puffy may shrinkto acceptable levels but in general tissues that havereceded due to bone loss and tissue migration willnot come all the way back if there has beenunderlying bony destruction.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have top and bottom denturesthat are held in with implants. I have 2 implants forthe top and 2 implants for the bottoms. The topdenture has cracked 3 times and has been repaired ata cost of almost $300 each time. The dentist blamesmy bite for them cracking and says the only way tocorrect the problem is to put more implants in on topand a new denture to correct the bite. What do you

think? I cant afford these repairsDearDave, your dentist is corre
