EVER ANCIENT, EVER NEW

(Quotes from the past) “He shall gather his elect from the four winds.” (Mk 13:27

T HE REAPERS OF this harvest are the Lord’s apostles and their successors, and in the course of time the teachers of the Church. Of them the Lord said: “The reaper receives his wages, and gathers a crop

of eternal life,” for teachers who instruct others in piety will in their turn receive from God such recompense as befits those who gather the obedient into eternal life. But there is yet another harvest: the transfer of each one of us by death from this present life into that which is to come. The reapers of this harvest are not the apostles but the angels, who have a greater responsibility than the apostles, because after the harvesting they sort out the good and separate them from the wicked like wheat from darnel. The good they send on to the kingdom of heaven, but the wicked they throw into hell fire. As for us, who in this present age are God’s chosen people, a priestly race, the Church of the living God separated from all the impious and ungodly, may we be found separated from the darnel in the age to come as well, and united to those who are saved in Christ our Lord, who is blessed for ever. Amen. - Homily 26 [Gregory Palamas]

+ + + Gregory Palamas (1296-1359), was born at Constantinople, and prepared by the piety of his parents for a monastic vocation. At the age of about twenty he became a monk of Mount Athos. In 1347 he was made bishop of Thessalonica.

THE WONDERS OF ST JOSEPH Thank You St Joseph, my spiritual Dad!

I am very thankful to God for giving me the opportunity to write short snippets in our parish newsletter during this year of St Joseph. Reading the book “Consecration to St Joseph” by Fr Donald H Calloway has allowed me to know St Joseph more personally and helped me to experience his powerful intercession in my life. I am very much aware that we are in a spiritual battle everyday. I fight daily temptations and I have spiritual struggles. I am grateful to St Joseph for helping me fight this spiritual war. He is the Terror of demons and I have personally experienced his help in my life. Having known St Joseph has deeply helped me in my spiritual journey to follow and love Jesus more. It’s great to have a spiritual dad in St Joseph. Give St Joseph a try, it works! Join the celebration at a Festival on St Joseph from 14 November to 11 December 2021, more info at www.marriageandfamily.org.nz

REGISTRATION SYSTEM FOR SUNDAY MASSES IN ALERT LEVEL 2 In Alert Level 2 the capacity of churches with social distancing and the 100 person limit restricts the number of people who can attend a Mass. (Our parish churches can only accommodate a lesser number) To help manage numbers for Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses, and to make it easier for parishioners to know where there are spaces at their parish Masses or in nearby parishes, you must register for Mass. The Mass timetable is the parish’s normal Saturday Vigil/Sunday timetable. During Alert Level 2 the dispensation from the Sunday obligation to attend Mass is in place for people who are cautious or concerned, who are vulnerable or at risk because of age or health issues, or who cannot find a place at a Mass. There is a Mass registration period each week, from 9am Wednesday to 12 noon Friday. To register go to “Mass Registration” on the Archdiocesan website’s homepage: www.wn.catholic.org.nz Choose your parish from the drop-down menu, and then the Mass you wish to attend. You will see how many spaces are available for the Mass you have selected. You will see a red error message if no spaces are available. If space is available, provide your name and contact details. You can register for an individual, a couple or a group. Click Submit. You will receive a confirmation email. If space is not available for the Mass you have chosen you can check numbers for other Masses in your parish or other parishes to find a place. You can also register by phoning the parish office: (04) 232 5611 or emailing the parish office: [email protected] with your name(s), phone number, and the time and place of the Mass you wish to attend. Please note: Do NOT register for more than one Saturday vigil or Sunday Mass. If you register for a Mass and find you cannot attend, you do not need to let the parish office know as there is no waiting list system. Please do not contact the parish office to change to another Mass once you have registered. The office does NOT have the capacity to handle changes.

Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses have now resumed in our parish on

Saturdays, 5.30pm at St Pius Church and

Sundays, 8.30am and 10.30am at Our Lady of Fatima Church.

If you wish to attend please read the info below ...

Dear friends, as we await the coming of the Son of Man, let us pray in peace for the whole of creation.

For our leaders in the Church, that they may read wisely the signs of the times and apply for us the teachings of Jesus. Lord, hear us.

For the Church, that all members of the Church embrace the Mission

entrusted to us, proclaim the Good News and care for those in need. Lord, hear us.

For the Synod, that we be encouraged in this Synod journey to speak with

courage and boldness, integrating freedom, truth and love. Lord, hear us.

For those who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic, that they will be

able to access the services to support them in these challenging times. Lord, hear us.

For those in our parish community who are sick, lonely and confined to

their home. May they find reasons for hope in spite of their challenges. Lord, hear us.

For the recently deceased and for those whose anniversary of death occurs

around this time, that they will enjoy happiness at God’s right hand for ever. Lord, hear us.

God of heaven and earth, you made all things to share in your everlasting glory. Keep us safe in your life-giving love. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

RESPONSORY FOR THE DEAD I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me even if he dies shall live; and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. If we die with Christ we shall also live with him. If we are faithful to the end, we shall reign with him. Happy are those who die in the Lord. Let them rest for their labours, for their good deeds go with them. For those who have faith in you, Lord, life does not cease, it merely changes. And when our earthly dwelling falls to ruin, we find an eternal home in heaven.

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Our Father …

Let us pray. Lord God, Almighty Father, our faith teaches us that Christ your Son died for us and rose again. May our brother/sister N share in this mystery as he/she has gone to his rest believing in Jesus. May he/she come through Him to see the joys of the resurrection. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

V. Eternal rest grant unto his/her soul, O Lord R. And let perpetual light shine upon him/her V. May he/she rest in peace R. Amen

May his/her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

VATICAN AGAIN EXTENDS NOVEMBER INDULGENCES Visit a cemetery during any day of November! Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, major penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary, announced that like in 2020, Pope Francis has expanded the possibility of obtaining a plenary indulgence for the faithful deceased throughout the month.

By means of the decree, the Apostolic Penitentiary “confirms and extends for the entire month of November 2021 all the spiritual benefits already granted on 22 October 2020” - that is, it allows the faithful to gain plenary indulgences for the souls in purgatory by VISITING a cemetery on every day in November and PRAYING for those who have died. Normally, this indulgence is limited to the first eight days of the month. A second plenary indulgence is offered on All Souls’ Day, 2 November. The current decree allows the faithful to obtain that indulgence for the benefit of the deceased on ANY DAY OF NOVEMBER. The All Soul’s Day indulgence is obtained by devoutly VISITING a church or an oratory and RECITING an Our Father and the Creed. The ELDERLY, SICK, and all those who for serious reasons cannot leave their home will also be able to obtain the indulgence by JOINING SPIRITUALLY with the faithful.
