Prix d=Ispahan cont.

Never on Sunday steadily climbed the ranks last term, following a hard-fought win in the Listed Prix Ridgwayat Chantilly in July with another game effort whenbesting Russian Cross (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) by a neckwhile in receipt of five pounds in the G3 Prix du Princed=Orange over 10 furlongs here in September. His sub-sequent outing when fifth in the d=Harcourt last timeleft him with a lot of ground to make up on the princi-ples here, but he took full advantage of their below-parperformances to register a career best. Switched offwith only one behind throughout the early stages, hewas allowed to creep up the fence after the final turnand, after rolling by Gris de Gris with 150 yards remain-ing, was ridden out with hands and heels to secure theprize. AThis horse is the real deal,@ Jean-Claude Rougetcommented. AHe has never ran a bad race and goes onany type of ground. He is entered in the G1 Prince ofWales=s S. [at Royal Ascot June 17] and, all being well,I have the intention of taking him there.@ Connectionsof Goldikova, who was eased by Olivier Peslier whenbeaten at the furlong marker, were dumbfounded.AThere is absolutely no explanation,@ the Wertheimerbrothers= racing manager Pierre-Yves Bureau said. AShelooked beautiful before the race and had been trainingwell, so we don=t know why she ran so badly. All wecan do is take her home and check that nothing iswrong and go again from there.@

Fresh from saddling the one-two in the G1 Pouled=Essai des Pouliches last Sunday, Jean-Claude Rougetpresaged the stable=s G1 Prix d=Ispahan glory by un-leashing a new star at Longchamp. Nurtured in theprovinces, the Salon-de-Provence and Toulouse scorerStacelita emerged from the minor leagues in the ListedPrix Rose de Mai, and demonstrated with a four-lengthwin in that Mar. 14 Saint-Cloud contest, that she was aforce to be reckoned with. Soon in front here, the baywas remorseless on the lead and ground her rivals intosubmission late. After jockey Christophe- PatriceLemaire looked over his shoulder at the furlong pole, she was allowed to ease to an emphatic success. AIt isa nice result, but one to take with caution as she lovedthe ground, and the distance between horses doesn=tnecessarily mean that much,@ said the Pau-based condi-tioner, who was celebrating his fourth success in thisevent in the last six years. ANevertheless, she has classand we can still dream, so we will head to the G1 Prixde Diane [at Chantilly June 14].@ Click for the Racing Postchart or the free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree.

Fourth and fifth, respectively, in the firsttwo rounds of the G3 Al Maktoum Challenge to com-mence his 2009 campaign, he was dropped into handi-cap company Feb. 26, and the bay responded with a 4 1/4-length victory. NO FRONTIERES AT EPSOM Sir Robert Ogden=s Sans Frontieres (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})will sidestep the G1 Epsom Derby, connections an-nounced yesterday. Runner-up in the G3 Craven S. atNewmarket Apr. 16 and third in Thursday=s G2 DanteS. at York, the Jeremy Noseda-trained colt will head toRoyal Ascot for the June 19 G2 King Edward VII S.AHaving listened to Mick Kinane and discussed it withSir Robert, we feel Epsom will not especially suit thehorse, and neither will the hustle and bustle of therace,@ Ogden=s Racing Manager Barry Simpson told theRacing Post.

View to try the Downs... George Strawbridge=s Rainbow View (Dynaformer)will have a workout on the Epsom Downs ahead of herJune 5 Oaks tilt, trainer John Gosden announced. AShe=s in great order and worked verywell a couple of days ago,@ her conditioner said. AShe=llbe out cantering, and we=ll go to Epsom for the >Break-fast With the Stars= and have a nice canter around thetrack there. There was one thing I was pleased aboutafter the Guineas, and that was that she came out ofthe race in good order.@

Matt Winn Duo AOK After Stretch Duel... J “TDN Rising Stars” J Capt. Candyman Can(Candy Ride {Arg}) and Cash Refund (Petionville), theone-two finishers after a heated stretch duel in Satur-day=s Matt Winn S. at Churchill, came out of the race ingood order. AI may just go to Saratoga with him--I maynot run him beforehand,@ Wilkes said. AHe runs so hardfor me. I think I=ve got to fill his tank a little.@ CashRefund will also head north, but likely will make hisnext appearance in the July 5 GIII Jersey Shore S. atMonmouth Park. PACO IS ASCOT-BOUND Trainer Richard Hannonyesterday quashed doubts that Saturday=s G1 LockingeS. flop Paco Boy (Ire) (Desert Style {Ire}) can get a mileby confirming the G1 Queen Anne S. as his next target.Only fourth as the 11-8 favorite in Newbury=s contest, last year=s G1 Prix de la Foret hero will stay at that tripfor the June 16 Royal Ascot heat. AIt was a shame thatthe rain came, as it turned the ground soft and, whileour horse enjoys a bit of cut, it made the race a staminatest over the mile, which, as everyone knows, is PacoBoy=s maximum distance,@ he said. AHowever, Paco Boywas not beaten far and, in the circumstances, I ammore than happy. With luck, we will get good ground atRoyal Ascot and all roads still lead to the Queen AnneS. He gets a mile no problem, whatever they say, andall we want at Ascot is a decent surface.@

CONGRATULATIONS from Fasig-Tipton’s ownGraded Stakes-Winning Stars of the Week:

EVERYDAY HEROES i HEART ASHLEY i RAVALONO ADVANTAGE i SEATTLE SMOOTH

Congratulations to all their connections!

www.fasigtipton.com

John-Dawson Cotton Accomplishment: Owner of Silver Frost (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}), winner of the May 10 G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Birthdate: July 25, 1940. Birthplace: Brighouse, UK. Education: Charterhouse.

Principal Business: Pillow and duvet manufacture.

Current Residence: Harrogate, UK.

How many horses do you own now? I have about 20 horses in

training, both jumps and flat, and some in England.

First win as an owner? Loop the Loup (GB) (Petit Loup) in a

handicap at Doncaster, Oct. 20, 2000.

If you could change one thing about our sport, what would it be?

The number of races in the UK that offer so little prize money. It is

hardly worth taking a horse out of its stable, and doesn't encourage

people to have horses in training.

Who inspires you the most? The French [leading jumps] trainer

Guillaume Macaire, whom I have a close relationship with. I left racing

until pretty late in life, and when I took the opportunity to have a horse

in training with him, it was the best thing I ever did. He has had some

wonderful horses, and the intensity of his training is amazing. His

horses can jump in their sleep, and when you see the dedication of

the man, it is hardly suprising he has had the success he has had.

Who was you biggest idol growing up? [British Prime Minister]

Margaret Thatcher. She turned around the strikes and problems we

faced in industry and, before her, when we went abroad people used

to laugh at us. What she did for Britain will be appreciated for a long

time after she's gone.

What is your favorite vacation spot? We enjoy yachting, and like to

go to Corsica.

GRADE 1 PREAKNESS S.

Rachel Train Heading to New York?... Still relishing Rachel Alexandra=s Classic victory yes-terday, trainer Steve Asmussen did not rule out a tilt atthe GI Belmont S. June 6, however, remained non-

committal in regard towhere the Jess Jackson-owned filly might appearnext. AI personally thinkshe's proven what [Jack-son] set out to prove withher immediately, whichdoesn't eliminate any-thing," Asmussen said.ABut I think it does take a

tad of the urgency off it. We're just going to pet on herand tell her how great she is for a little while, and seewhere that leads her.@

Bird on the Move; Smith to Stay on Board... Mine That Bird (Birdstone), runner-up in Saturday=s GI Preakness S., will depart Baltimore by van today andhead back to Churchill Downs, where he will be pre-pared for his next start in the GI Belmont S. AMy horsewill be much more suited to the Belmont--big widetrack, big wide sweeping turns,@ said Woolley. AItshould play a little better to my horse. It'll probably be ashorter field, which eliminates some of the traffic. We're excited about going. As long as he's good thenext couple days, like he looks [Sunday] morning, that'llbe the plan.@ Woolley also confirmed Sunday thatjockey Mike Smith would be back in the saddle for theBelmont, ending speculation about who would ride theGI Kentucky Derby winner should Rachel Alexandrabypass the 1 1/2-mile Classic. Without a particular raceconfirmed for the bay following the Belmont, Woolleyindicated that he would not ship his Classic winnerback to New Mexico any time soon. AWe'll probablyspot him again around [the North East],@ he said. AIt'ssuch a long, hard trip from where we are that we'llkeep him out here. As long as we've got spots wereaiming at, we'll stay in this vicinity, somewhere withina decent hauling distance."

Musket Man to Haskell... Musket Man (Yonaguska), third in both the Derby andPreakness, will bypass next month=s Belmont and willbe given some time off before returning for a summercampaign. AHe came out of the race good, no problem,@confirmed trainer Derek Ryan, who had the colt vannedback to his base at Monmouth Park Saturday night. ANoBelmont, definitely. He's going home and we're goingto freshen him up and get him ready for the GI HaskellInvitational S. [Aug. 2 at Monmouth Park]." cont. p10

GRADE 1 PREAKNESS S. TripleThreats

P N E W S T O D A Y P

No Fire for Friesan... Friesan Fire (A.P. Indy), who threw in another disap-pointing effort in last Saturday=s GI Preakness S., ap-pears to have exited his 10th-place finish in good order,

according to trainer LarryJones Sunday. ANo majorcomplaints,@ said Jones. AWeended up scoping him laterSaturday, and there wasnothing. We don't see anyexcuses that he could havethis time other than the factthat he didn't come down thelane as fast as he should

have. He was sitting in a good spot at that point. Actu-ally, I loved the way he was sitting early in the race. Ican't blame it on anything. The pace was apparentlywhat it should be, because the horse that we werefollowing [Rachel Alexandra] won the race. I wish Icould come up with a real good excuse, saying I knowhow to keep that from happening next time, but thereare no reasons that we can see right now." Cam-paigned by Fox Hill Farms, the GII Louisiana Derbywinner was shipped back to Jones=s barn at DelawarePark Sunday morning. AWe'll sit down and regroup andsee what's next," Jones added. AI'm sure we're notheaded for the Belmont, but we'll see what happens. We'll find him a spot he'll fit in."

Rough Trip for General Quarters... General Quarters (Sky Mesa), who came home inninth in last Saturday=s Preakness, enjoyed a quietmorning Sunday and was scheduled to ship back to

Churchill Downs today, according totrainer Tom McCarthy. AHe came outof it real well, but somebody wentdown the side of his [left front] leg,"said the 75-year-old retired high schoolprincipal. AIt didn't go deep; it just tookthe hair off. We got hit on the otherside also, and that was just a littledeeper. I think it happened when hehit the top of the stretch.@ McCarthyindicated that he will give GeneralQuarters some time off before pointingtoward the GII Indiana Derby in Octo-

ber. AI'm going to look for something that will be a littleeasier," he said. AWe've been going against the besthorses in America. I just want to back off a little bit andlet him regroup, and get a confidence builder."

GITANO HERNANDO TO MISS BELMONT TeamValor International=s Gitano Hernando (GB) (Hernando{Fr}) will miss an intended engagement in the June 6GI Belmont S., according to Team Valor=s Barry Irwin. The i40,000 DEAAUG yearling broke his maiden atWolverhampton last November before adding a victoryat Doncaster in March. In his latest start, the chestnutwas only a head back in second in the G3 Dee S. atChester May 8. AHe came up lame a few days after [theDee S.] and will need to walk for about three weeks, which eliminates him from the [Belmont]," Irwin saidyesterday. AWe plan to point him for grass racing thissummer on the East Coast. There are no definitive plansyet.@ Of his last start, Irwin added, AIt's very frustrating. He was jostled around quite a bit in the race and proba-bly took a bad step. The winner about put him over therail about 100 yards into the race, which is why therewas an inquiry that lasted nearly 20 minutes.@

Devotee to Acorn... Godolphin=s Devotee (Elusive Quality), winner of theMeydan City UAE Oaks Feb. 26, is expected to arrive atAqueduct early Wednesday morning in advance of astart in the GI Acorn S. at Belmont June 6. The fillywas 13th in her latest start in the G1 1000 Guineas atNewmarket May 3.

VENTURA TO SHOEMAKER MILE JuddmonteFarm=s Ventura (Chester House) will make her next startagainst the boys in the GI Shoemaker Mile at Holly-wood Park May 25. Only two females have won theShoemaker in its 65-year history: Happy Issue in 1946and Special Touch in 1951. Since joining the barn ofBobby Frankel in the United States, Ventura has fin-ished second against males twice in Grade I turf racesover a mile--She finished 1 1/4 lengths behind Rahy'sAttorney (Crown Attorney) in the Woodbine Mile inToronto last September and a nose behind Gio Ponti(Tale of the Cat) in the GI Frank Kilroe Mile H. at SantaAnita Mar. 7. In her most recent start, the dual Grade Iwinner was runner-up behind Informed Decision(Monarchos) in the GI Vinery Madison S. overKeeneland=s Polytrack Apr. 9.

The fact that Eye On Jacob proved worthy of thename came as no surprise to his connections. ANick Zito=s not the kind of guy who usually gets hishorses cranked up for the first race--he likes to developthem down the line,@ Sonbol remarked. ABut we knewhe had the talent to get it done first time. He=s alwaysbeen a very nice horse and he=s been training forwardly.Nick has been very high on him. AWe were expecting a big effort from him today andhe gave it to us, so we=re pretty excited.@ And, if his career opener is any indication, the best isyet to come. AWe expect him to get better as the races get longer,@Sonbol said AHe=s got speed, but he=s the kind of horsethat hopefully can carry his speed a distance of ground. It=s tough to break your maiden first time out going amile, but obviously we think he=s a special horse. AWith his pedigree, and the amount of talent heshowed today, we=d like to develop him,@ he continued.AMaybe he=ll be a horse that will be nice down the linefor a race like the Travers.A For more information about the Eye On Jacob Foun-dation, go to www.eyeonjacob.org.
