The Kentucky-bred, a Northern Hemisphere two-year-old who was competing against South- ern Hemisphere three-year- olds, captured two of three starts in Peru by a com- bined 12 lengths. He was shipped from Lima to Miami Dec. 9, and will be trained in the United States by Todd Pletcher. Bloodstock agent John Fulton brokered the deal for Al Khali, in association with Kentucky-based agent Fernando Macchiavello. AJohn gave us the head- up about the colt,@ WinStar=s Doug Cauthen said. AHe went down there and looked at him, and he liked him, so we bought the colt on his recommendation.@ Cauthen added, AHe=s well-bred, by an up- and-coming young sire, out of a nice female family, and he=s a good physical. We=ve had success with John=s recommenda- tions in the past, so we=re relying on his bird=s-eye view, and we=re hopeful for 2009.@ Al Khali=s third dam is GISW Chic Shirine (Mr. Prospector); he is from the family of champion Queena, GISWs Brahms and Serra Lake and graded winners Tara Roma, Cappuchino, Waldoboro, La Reina and Regal Engagement. The bay was ac- quired for $15,000 as a KEESEP year- ling by Dante Zanelli, agent. Zanelli also signed the ticket for subsequent Peruvian Derby hero Tomcito (Street Cry {Ire}), a $7,500 KEESEP yearling who was four-for- five in Peru for owner Stud Jet Set and trainer Juan Suarez. Tomcito returned to the U.S. last winter, and Zanelli saddled him to a third-place finish in the GI Florida Derby in his first stateside start. READY TO BRING THE “HEAT” Martin Schwartz=s Elusive Heat (Elusive Quality), a daughter of champion Xtra Heat (Dixieland Heat), will make her much anticipated return to the races in Sunday=s GIII Old Hat S. at Gulfstream Park. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the dark bay showed brilliant early speed in her Oct. 12 Belmont un- veiling (Video ), clearing the field after breaking from post nine. With Edgar Prado in the irons, she effortlessly dashed off fractions of :22.19 and :44.95, and went on to win for fun by 5 1/2 lengths, earning J “TDN Ris- ing Star” J status. AShe=s just a very talented filly--very fast and she does everything right,@ McLaughlin said of Elusive Heat, who was acquired by Schwartz for $750,000 at the FTFFEB two-year-olds in training sale. AShe ran ex- tremely well that day, and we hope that she could repeat that performance in the Old Hat. I=m sure it=s going to be a little tougher than a maiden race, but she=s very talented and we thought we=d step her up to a graded stakes hoping to get a graded placing or a win.@ cont. p2 www.hillndalefarms.com Brahms horseracing.com Elusive Heat Adam Coglianese

TDN Feature Presentation, Sponsored by Lane=s End cont.

According to McLaughlin, the plan all along was toawait the Old Hat following Elusive Heat=s sparklingdebut. The 3/4 to SW & GSP Southwestern Heat (GoneWest) has posted four workouts at Palm Meadowssince late November, including a four-furlong move in:48.25 Dec. 29. AShe worked very well,@ the conditioner said of Elu-sive Heat=s most recent workout. AJust what weordered--:48 1/5. She=s been working regularly andworking well, and we=re happy with her training andlooking forward to running her.@ Elusive Heat will likely be kept to one-turn affairs, andwill be pointed toward some of the same stakes racesas her multi-millionaire winning mother, who annexedthe 2001 GI Prioress S. at Belmont and also placedsecond in that term=s GI Test S. at the Spa. AI would have to say I=d doubt her stretching outbased on her pedigree,@ McLaughlin commented. AOutof Xtra Heat--who was a pure sprinter--she looks like asprinter. She=s very fast looking. You never know untilyou try it, but I would think we wouldn=t be too quickto try her too far. We wouldn=t mind running seven[furlongs], but as far as two turns, we=re not going tobe in a hurry to do that. We have Grade Is in New Yorkat six and seven furlongs in the Prioress and the Test.So those may be some of our goals down the road.@ Prado has retained the mount for Sunday.--S.S.

By Sid Fernando A well-known pedigree authority blogged Dec. 23that the first-crop Walmac stallion Soto was repre-sented by four stakes winners in his first crop, includinga Group 1 winner in Japan. He was wrong, but thisisn=t about him. It=s about the flow of erroneous infor-mation that can contaminate the research and decision-making process of owners and breeders, unless ex-treme care is used to filter the true from the false. The primary bad source, in this case, happens to beequineline.com, a division of The Jockey Club Informa-tion Systems, Inc., (TJCIS), a subsidiary of The JockeyClub. The official word on black type is the book AInterna-tional Cataloguing Standards and International Statistics2008,@ which, ironically, is published by TJCIS in asso-ciation with the International Federation of HorseracingAuthorities. This book clearly states which races world-wide are accorded Group 1, 2, 3, or listed race status, and which other races in the U.S. are eligible for blacktype, based on purse monies exceeding $50,000, withsome restrictions.

ACataloging Standards@ divides countries into threeparts for flat racing. Only APart 1" countries have recog-nized grade or group races, and they include the U.S.and Canada; the major European racing countries; Ar-gentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru from South America;Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, UnitedArab Emirates, selected races from Hong Kong and onerace from Singapore (the most up-to-date stats areavailable from the website of the International Federa-tion of Horseracing Authorities, www.ifhaonline.org). Stakes races (including group races) in APart II@ coun-tries are only given listed race status. APart II@ countriesinclude Hong Kong (except for those races that areAPart I@), India, Macau, Panama, Puerto Rico, Scandina-via (except for six races that are APart I@), Singapore(except for one Group 1 race), Uruguay (former APart I@country), Venezuela and Zimbabwe. APart III@ countries get no black type, and they includeMexico, Netherlands, Korea, and everywhere else thatracing is conducted. Because TJCIS publishes this material, Equinelineshould have this information reflected in its products. For some of his Soto blog stats, the pedigree author-ity used equineline.com=s product 501s-Soto, a copy ofwhich can be accessed from Soto=s page on theWalmac web site (dated Dec. 22 at this writing). Here,it states that Soto is the sire of Afour stakes winners@and A1 graded-stakes winner.@ cont. p3

Writers Up cont.

In his Soto blog, the authority had Soto as the sire ofa Group 1 winner in Japan and a Grade I winner inMexico as well, so he had one more group or gradedwinner than Equineline=s 501 report. He probably foundthe Mexican stakes winner on The Blood-Horse onlinestallion register, which lists the Mexican Grade I winnerand a hyperlinked chart of the race--the Clasico DanielCardenas Mora. The online Blood-Horse stallion register lists fourstakes winners for Soto, but no Japanese Group 1winner. The Thoroughbred Times stallion register hasthree stakes winners for the stallion, but no MexicanGrade I winner. Stallion-register pages are advertisements, and arenot meant to be definitive reference material, butEquineline products are usually accepted at face value, which is presumably what the authority used to shapehis blog. Unfortunately, because of this, Soto=s stats are in-flated in the authority=s piece, and anyone researchingthe stallion through Equineline or the two stallion regis-ters also will be misled, as the authority was. Instead offour stakes winners, he should have only two at thiswriting. None of his runners at this point in time areGroup 1/ Grade I winners. Because of a technicality, however, there=s room fordistortion. Black type is not synonymous with stakesraces; therefore, a horse that wins a $10,000,$20,000, or $30,000 stakes race at a small track canbe listed as a Astakes winner@ for his sire, even thoughhis dam wouldn=t get credit for it on her catalog pageaccording to ACataloging Standards.@ Breeders and owners need to demand more unifor-mity and accuracy from TJCIS, as well as from theadvertising supplements of The Blood-Horse and Thor-oughbred Times. For the record, Walmac, to its credit, had the correctinformation for Soto on its web page: Two stakes win-ners, neither of them a Group 1 or Grade I winner. Here=s where everyone else went wrong, according tothe ACataloguing Standards:@ $ Soto=s talented son Suni won the Zen-Nippon NisaiYushun, a listed race and not a Japanese Group 1. $ Soto=s daughter Sonrisa=s graded Mexican racedoes not count as black type, because Mexico is a APartIII@ country. $ Soto=s daughter Glamorous Gal does get black type, because the $60,000 stakes race she won qualifies onpurse money. $ Soto=s son Dance to the Star does not get blacktype, because the $25,000 stakes race he won doesnot qualify on purse money.

NYSRWB Mandates New Ticket Cashing Policy: Effective Jan. 1, 2009, the New York State Racingand Wagering Board (NYSRWB) has implemented a newrule concerning any winning pari-mutuel ticket pur-chased at a New York pari-mutuel facility that is notcashed within 10 days and has a cash value of $300 ormore. Under the new NYSRWB mandate, such a ticketcan only be cashed at specific designated pari-mutuelwindows after the name, home address, date of birthand social security number of the relevant patron havebeen provided. No other racing jurisdiction in the coun-try makes this requirement of its customers. The NewYork Racing Association strongly opposed this new rulewhen it was circulated for industry comments, andcontinues to oppose the rule as fundamentally badpublic policy, because it will not remedy any materialharm that can be articulated and it will therefore need-lessly damage the business of the state's pari-mutuelfacilities. AThe New York Racing Association is theindustry leader in integrity, based on its anti-moneylaundering policies, its race day security barns, and itsrefusal to do business with unregulated off-shore rebateshops,@ said NYRA President and CEO Charles Hay-ward. AHowever, this rule is not about integrity; it isfurther inconveniencing the customer who is fortunateenough to have placed a winning wager. No other statein the country punishes its customers for holding on toa winning ticket for more than 10 days. Given thecurrent state of the industry and the economy in gen-eral, this new ruling could not have come at a worsetime.@

Louisville Courier-Journal Web Site Wins Eclipse Award: The National Thoroughbred Racing Association, DailyRacing Form and the National Turf Writers Associationannounced yesterday that the Website cou-rier-journal.com of the Louisville Courier-Journal hasbeen honored with the 2008 Media Eclipse Award inthe Audio and Multi-Media Internet category. The sitewon for its three-part series on injuries to race horses, which appeared on its site from Aug. 16-18, 2008.Following the fatal injury to Eight Belles in the KentuckyDerby, the Courier-Journal initiated an investigativeexamination of horse racing safety, incorporating multi-ple platforms of audio, video, print, interactive graphicsand still photography on courier-journal.com. TitledATragedy on the Track,@ the series explored geneticresearch and breeding, track surfaces and performance-enhancing medication. The print pieces were supportedby videos, which included a comparison of Thorough-breds making foot impact on a dirt track and syntheticsurfaces; and a demonstration by blacksmith SteveNorman focusing on the differences between flat horseshoes and controversial toe grabs. AAfter the deaths ofBarbaro and then Eight Belles, and the industry andpublic reaction to them, it was obvious that we neededto take another look at the issue of breakdowns,@ saidCourier-Journal Sports Editor Harry Bryan. AIt was a realteam effort, but it was especially important that oureditor, Bennie Ivory, recognized not only the signifi-cance of the issue, but also the possibilities that theinternet provided in conveying the story. He providedus with the time and the resources to get the job doneright. The tools of the Internet enabled us to tell thestory far more effectively than in previous efforts.@ Theprincipal writers were Jennie Rees, Andrew Wolfsonand Greg Hall, with Scott Utterback, videographer andSteve Reed, graphic artist. Other editors involved in theproject were John Mura, the multi-media manager ofthe site, along with Kim Kolarik, new media editor, Managing Editor Ben Post and First Amendment Man-ager Jean Porter. The site may be viewed athttp://www.courier-journal.com/horse.

Billy Reed Wins Eclipse for News/Commentary Writing: Billy Reed, long time sports writer and columnist, haswon the 2008 Media Eclipse Award for Writing in theNews/Commentary category for his column AA Rose forEight Belles, which appeared in the May 16 issue ofThoroughbred Times. This is the third Media EclipseAward for the 65-year-old, a native of Louisville, Ken-tucky. He previously won the 1979 Media EclipseAward for Newspaper writing for an article in the Louis-ville Courier-Journal on jockey Ron Turcotte, and againfor newspaper writing in 1988 for an article on trainerD. Wayne Lukas, which appeared in the LexingtonHerald-Leader. Reed was a sports editor and columnistfor the Courier-Journal and columnist for the Her-ald-Leader, as well as a senior writer for Sports Illus-trated. AI am stunned to win this award again@, saidReed. AI just love racing. I have covered every majorsporting event, but the Derby is still my favorite one. Iwent to the backstretch morning after this year=s raceto express my sympathies to the connections of EightBelles and brought my five-year-old granddaughter,Caroline, with me. I was trying to gain some perspec-tive to it all, and decided to write the column.@ Reed draws on his experiences and emotions of previ-ous Derbies while relating the events surrounding the2008 running. The following day, with Caroline, whohad drawn a picture of Eight Belles on Derby morning,Reed visited Eight Belles=s trainer Larry Jones, as a partof a search for answers to the mystery of the love forthe race horse. In his award-winning piece, Reed writes:AWhen an accident happens, racetrackers do not pointfingers. They do not blame the trainer or the trackcondition. They only drop their heads or brush back atear or give somebody a hug. Then they go back towork. The horses must be fed and groomed and exer-cised. Life must go on. The grandfather told the littlegirl he had no explanation, except that maybe God justdecided he needed a fast horse, and so it was time forhim to call Eight Belles home. She listened, brow fur-rowed. She thought. Then she said she wanted to takeher drawing and a rose to the track to give to the peo-ple who took care of Eight Belles.@

RTCA CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL SOUTHAMERICA MISSION Looking to promote awarenessof the Race Track Chaplaincy of America and its mis-sion to establish racetrack ministry work throughout theworldwide horse racing community, leaders of thegroup recently concluded a successful trip to SouthAmerica that included stops in Santiago, Lima andBuenos Aires. RTCA members met with racetrack in-dustry leaders in Peru and with councils at HipodromoChile and at Hipodromo La Plata in Argentina. Beginningtheir journey Dec. 1, the team was led by AssistantExecutive Director Edward Smith and Chaplain LuisPeralta. While in Peru, they visited with leaders fromseveral segments of the racing industry, from trackmanagement to the Jockey Club and the JockeySchool, and with trainers, members of the local com-munity and church leaders and turf writers. AThe pri-mary purpose in Peru was to introduce the concept ofthe Race Track Ministry, which focuses on a holisticapproach of serving the racetrack workers who servethe horse racing industry,@ said Smith. AIt was a suc-cessful introductory visit, and it is the goal and hope ofthe RTCA to help establish a chaplaincy in Peru in2009.@ Peralta, a native of Guatemala, will relocate toCordoba, Argentina, and will serve as the RTCA SouthAmerican liason to Smith. AWe have been leading train-ing for the councils, and it was incredible to hear testi-mony of how the chaplaincy has impacted and changedthe lives of so many workers,@ said Smith. In its 37thyear of work, the RTCA currently sanctions and over-sees 77 chaplains who serve at 117 tracks and train-ing/breeding centers throughout North America andaround the world. The RTCA is a non-denominationalministry that serves all those who serve in the horseindustry. More information can be obtained atwww.racetrackchaplaincy.org.
