By a nice coincidence, Hollywood’s Grade I juvenile races both fell to youngsters with a pedigree featuring Alydar, the outstanding son of Raise A Native who will always be remembered more for his gallant Triple Crown defeats by Affirmed than for his six Grade I victories. Of course there is nothing unusual about Alydar’s name appearing in the pedigree of a major winner. It is far more unusual, though, to see his name in the male line of a Grade I winner, such as the Hollywood Futurity winner Brother Derek, than in the broodmare sire line, as in the pedigree of the Hollywood Starlet heroine Diplomat Lady. The unpalatable truth is that Alydar--for all his achievements and excellent bloodlines--was a fairly disastrous sire of sires. Although he had over 50 sons at stud in the early 1990s, his male line is now hanging by a thread and I think there is only one grandson--Easy Goer’s son Will’s Way--with graded winners to his credit. Perhaps Benchmark, the sire of Brother Derek, still has time to remedy this situation, as he comes from Alydar’s final crop, sired before the Calumet star’s controversial death at the age of 15 in 1990. Even in his prime, Alydar had a reputation for beingmore of a filly sire, thanks largely to the magnificent

start he made with his outstandingfirst-crop daughters Althea andMiss Oceana. Although he soonadded further Grade I-winning filliesto his tally in the form of Alydar’sBest, Endear, Clabber Girl, I’mSweets and Cadillacing, he wasn’tlong in showing that he could alsoget top-class sons. His second cropwas headed by Saratoga Six andTurkoman, with Turkoman becom-ing the first of three sons of Alydarto take the title of champion olderhorse. The other two, Alysheba and

Criminal Type, also took the Horse of the Year title, while Easy Goer was the champion of his division attwo. With a Kentucky Derby winner, Strike the Gold, also among his nine American Grade I-winning sons,Alydar could have been expected to found a dynasty inmuch the same way as Mr. Prospector, another son ofRaise A Native, has done.

It wasn’t to be. Turkoman, who stood the 2005season at a fee of $3,000 in California, proved muchless effective as a stallion, even though he supplied theGrade I winners Man From Wicklow and Turk Passer;Criminal Type, who got caught up in Calumet’s prob-lems, was soon sold to Japan, leaving Grade II andGrade III winners behind; and Saratoga Six, althoughstill plying his trade at the age of 23, has sired only oneGrade I winner. Alysheba--the sire of one Grade I winner--is nowresident in Saudi Arabia, while Strike the Gold headedfor Turkey after failing to sire a single graded winner.Perhaps Easy Goer would have set the record straighthad he lived, as his legacy included the Grade I winnersMy Flag, Furlough and Will’s Way, but it could be ar-gued that he should have done even better with theexceptional mares he received. Bearing in mind some of the features of Benchmark’sracing career, he didn’t look a prime candidate to sal-vage Alydar’s record as a sire of sires. Unraced at two,he was unplaced on his only appearance at three. Bythe time he turned six in 1997, he had managed onlyseven starts for three minor victories, but he then madea successful stakes debut in the GII San Bernadino H. The winning trainer, Ron Ellis, commented that “Heshould have been named ‘Patience’ for all we’ve beenthrough with him.” The six-year-old continued to reward that patience, adding further Grade II successesin the Del Mar H. and GoodwoodBreeders’ Cup H. Ankle surgerythen put Benchmark back on thesidelines in 1998, but his debut atstud coincided with the emer-gence of his very talented halfsister Tranquility Lake. Thisdaughter of Rahy became a GradeI winner in the Gamely Breeders’Cup H. and later took the YellowRibbon S. Tranquility Lake hit the headlines again thisyear when her second foal, by Storm Cat, fetched ajaw-dropping $9.7 million at Keeneland. Cont. p3

That colt was obviously bought with a view to even-tually becoming a major stallion, so his buyers must be

encouraged by Benchmark’sachievement of siring twoGrade I winners. BrotherDerek’s predecessor is SilentSigns, who inflicted the firstdefeat on Halfbridled in win-ning the Santa Anita Oaks.Benchmark has also sired theGrade II scorer A to the Zand the Grade III winnerStandard Setter, with hisfour graded winners coming

from a total of little over 200 named foals in his firstfour crops--all sired at modest fees in California. Hisachievements have been rewarded with books of 91,121 and108 mares in the last three years, so he isgoing to have enough ammunition to continue hittingthe target. Perhaps he is benefitting from being out of a Danzigmare. Danzig sired nine stakes winners from Alydarmares, including Lure and this year’s successful fresh-man sire Bertolini. Alydar’s five foals out of Danzigmares included the graded winners Lotta Dancing andBenchmark. Benchmark is also out of a half sister to theBelmont S. winner Caveat, who sired nearly 10 percentstakes winners. Two of Benchmark’s graded winners are out ofdaughters of Siyah Kalem, another California stallion. As Siyah Kalem--a talented miler--is a son of Mr. Pros-pector, these two are inbred 3x4 to Raise A Native.

Inbreeding to Raise A Native through Mr. Prospectorand Alydar has been fairly extensive, its finest adver-tisements probably being Horse of the Year Point Given(inbred 4x4), the champion juvenile Anees (4x3) andthe Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Wagon Limit (3x4).Mention of Point Given reminds me that his first twodams are by Turkoman and Relaunch, the latter alsobeing the sire of Brother Derek’s second dam, thestakes-winning Solamente Un Vez. Brother Derek’sthird dam, Gavel Gertie, is also the fourth dam of an-other of this year’s graded-winning juveniles, namelyDeputy G, winner of the GIII Bashford Manor S. It wasa son of Relaunch who sired Deputy G’s second dam. With his earnings now in excess of $500,000 (includ-ing $90,000 earned from his fourth in the Breeders’Cup Juvenile), Brother Derek has proved a very shrewdbuy at the $275,000 he cost at Barretts in March--thatprice reflecting the fact that his brotherDon’tsellmeshort has notched up earnings of over$400,000.
