Aug. 2, owner Ahmed Zayat told ESPN.com Thursday. "I've decided to do the logical step and run American Pharoah at Monmouth," Zayat said. "I'm trying to create one of the best days racing has ever seen for its fans and one that will also fit the prestige that surrounds American Pharoah. I want it to be a great day for everyone that will celebrate racing." Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who boasts a record seven Haskell wins, added, "We were all waiting to see how American Pharoah worked and for me to give the OK. I liked the way he's training, the way he worked and how he came out of it very well. He looked a little light after the Belmont but he's gotten the weight back, so with no hiccups between now and then, the Haskell is the obvious spot for him." Monmouth Park officials are making the Haskell part of a three-day celebration to be called AThe Pharoah Phan Phestival.@ Baffert will also be inducted into Monmouth=s Hall of Fame during the weekend. "We are ecstatic to know American Pharoah will be running in the Haskell," Monmouth president Bob Kulina said. "This will be the biggest day ever in the history of racing in New Jersey. We've been racing for 70 years and this is the first time we will have a Triple Crown champion here. I didn't think I would ever say this, but this will be even bigger than 2007 when we hosted the Breeders' Cup." Zayat, a New Jersey resident, plans to reach out to fellow New Jerseyans Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Kobe Bryant in hopes that they will come and make Haskell day an even more memorable experience. Many tracks have been trying to lure American Pharoah, including Saratoga which Zayat says is not out of the question. "The horse comes first and we intend to run him as many times this year as he tells us he can," Zayat said. "The hope is that he does in the Haskell what he loves to do, and that is winning. We'll see how he comes out of it. We have not ruled out running at Saratoga [in the GI Travers S. Aug. 29]. It's something I'm happy and willing to do, as does Bob. I don't want to commit and put too much pressure on Bob or the horse. We want the horse to tell us. But if he's ready, he'll go there. These are not easy decisions but I want to do right by the horse and the fans." MAIN SEQUENCE RETURNS IN U.N. Dual Eclipse winner Main Sequence (Aldebaran) makes his first start since returning from Dubai in Sunday=s GI United Nations S. at Monmouth Park, a AWin and You=re In@ event for the GI Breeders= Cup Turf. The Flaxman Holdings homebred burst onto the American turf scene with a scintillating victory in this race last year in his Stateside debut for trainer Graham Motion, and followed that with three more Grade I wins, including the Breeders= Cup Turf. Kicking off this term with a win in Gulfstream=s GII Mac Diarmida S. Feb. 21, the chestnut was seventh last time against much tougher in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic Mar. 28. NEW ERA DAWNS IN VIRGINIABy T.D. Thornton The horse racing landscape in Virginia shiftedsignificantly July 1 when new state racing statuteswent into effect to turn over simulcasting privileges andprofits from closed Colonial Downs, which has not helda Thoroughbred meet since 2013, to a newlyrecognized a non-profit alliance between the state=sThoroughbred, Standardbred and steeplechase racinginterests. But even though Wednesday marked the official dateof the changes in the state=s racing laws, the VirginiaHorsemen=s Benevolent and Protective Association(VHBPA) and the relatively new Virginia Equine Alliance(VEA) have been working for months on both short andlong-range plans to establish a self-sufficient series ofThoroughbred meets in the state that could be foldedinto a larger regional circuit. According to Frank Petramalo Jr., executive directorof the VHBPA, near-term goals over the next 90 daysinclude finding a suitable turf course to run a brief flatrace meet, opening the first of what could eventually be10 off-track-betting locations in existing sports barsaround the state, and the one-year shifting of Virginia=ssix state-bred stakes races and four signature gradedstakes races to Laurel Park in Maryland. Wednesday, the Virginia Racing Commission (VRC)granted of permission to move four graded stakes--theGII Virginia Derby, GII Virginia Gold Cup (for steeplechasers),the GIII Virginia Oaks and GIII Edward P. Evans AllAlong S.--out of state for one year. Cont. p5

New Era Dawns in Virginia cont.

In a story the TDN reported in April, one bone ofcontention between Colonial and the VHBPA had beenColonial=s desire to run a single blockbuster stakesweekend in 2015 built around those graded races. TheVHBPA, at the time, strongly disagreed with that plan, claiming that budgeting so much money for gradedstakes (that would likely be won by non-Virginiahorsemen) was at odds with the VHBPA=s goal ofsupporting Abread-and-butter@ racing at the lower end ofthe purse structure. Petramalo said Thursday that the package of fourgraded stakes would likely have an aggregate purse of$900,000. Part of the VEA=s negotiations with theMaryland Jockey Club (MJC), which owns Laurel, is tohave the MJC split the cost. But that still means$450,000 would be leaving Virginia to potentiallybenefit outside horsemen. Both Petramalo, and Bernard Hettel, the executivesecretary of the VRC, said the outflow of purse moneywas preferable to losing the graded status of thoseraces and leaving Virginia without marquee events ifand when racing returns to the state in 2016. Hettel said the VRC backs this move. AThere is somedesire to maintain the grading,@ Hettel said. AThis wouldhave been the second consecutive year ofnon-performance, which would have been an absolutelosing of the grade." MJC vice president and general manager Sal Sinatraconfirmed funding for the graded stakes package wouldbe a 50/50 split, pending the approval of Marylandhorsemen. He said this is an expense the MJC is willingto pay for because it contributes to the MJC=s eventualgoal of having higher-class year-round racing in theregion. AThey=re still trying to preserve Virginia racing, so I tryto help them as best I can,@ Sinatra said. AThe way it=splanned right now, we first have to make some sort ofarrangement with Delaware, because they=re a biggerparty, if you will, to what could be a >DEL-MAR-VA=circuit. Virginia is going to be a smaller slice, but we=retrying to work all of us three together.@ Petramalo said Colonial Downs owns the trademarkto the name AVirginia Derby,@ so a rebranding would benecessary for the proposed $400,000 race, whichwould be rescheduled from its former July date toSeptember or October. ASo what we=ll likely do is rename those races with>Old Dominion,=@ Petramalo said. ASo it will be the >OldDominion Derby,= the >Old Dominion Turf Cup,= etcetera, presented by the Virginia Equine Alliance. Somethinglike that.@

The rules are not crystal clear on whether therenamed and relocated race would retain its grade.According to the Thoroughbred Owners and BreedersAssociation guidelines for the American Graded StakesCommittee, Aif a graded or eligible race is alteredmaterially in age, sex, eligibility, racetrack location, orpurse, or is substantially changed on the calendar (60or more days), this will prompt a review and may resultin a change in grade.@ AOur first priority is finding a site for some flatracing,@ said Petramalo. AWe=re close there. I would notbe surprised if in the next month or two we turned ourenergies to opening up the system of OTBs.@ The scouting for new race meet locations and thepreparation for eventually taking control of the state=sOTB network have been in the works ever since theVHBPA and Colonial failed to reach a lease agreementearlier this spring. And in 2014, six Virginia-bred stakesraces were run at Laurel, so that aspect of the plan isnot new. The VEA now has statutory authority to run racemeets and up to 10 OTBs in the state. Colonialpreviously had a simulcasting exclusivity, but the tracksurrendered its live racing license, then shuttered itsOTBs, last autumn. This prompted the passage of newlegislation to grant those rights to a non-profithorsemen=s entity, which the state now recognizes asthe VEA. Petramalo said based on a projected $50 to $70million simulcast handle in 2015, the VHBPA will addanother $2.5 to $3 million to its coffers this year, derived from a state-mandated 5% share of the handle. The VEA, he said, separately garners 4% of thesimulcast handle; this is money that formerly went toColonial for operating its OTB network. ARemember, while I don=t want to necessarily give outspecific numbers, we didn=t race in 2014,@ Petramalosaid. ASo sitting in our bank accounts is all of the pursemoney that we would have spent last year. We=re notin bad financial shape.@ AWe=re not looking to open up the same ones thatColonial had,@ Petramalo said. AWhat we=re looking at isa new business model. The old model was buildingstick-and-brick stand-alones. We think it=s moreeconomically feasible and profitable to set up an OTB inan existing sports bar, and then we wouldn=t have tostart from day one building a facility.@ For a new track he added, AOur goal is probably tocome up with something like Kentucky Downs, whereyou have all turf racing in a large, rolling course in thecountryside.@ Colonial, Petramalo said, is totally shut down rightnow and it won=t resurface as a possible location for arace meet.

DURBAN JULY LOOKS WIDE OPEN The countdown has begun to South Africa's premierrace, the R3.5 million, G1 Vodacom Durban July.Saturday will see a full field 18 runners tackling theexacting 2200 meters of the Greyville Racecourse. TheDurban July is a conditions race with a set top weightof 60kgs and with a capped weight of 57kgs for

3-year-old old coltsand geldings and56kgs for theirfemale counterparts.Hence in recentyears the3-year-olds havedominated, winningfive of the last sixraces. This year'sfield includes three3-year-old colts andthree fillies, with

the Sean Tarry-trained Legal Eagle (SAf) (Greys Inn) theshort-priced favorite at 28-10. Legal Eagle won the G1 SA Derby over 2450m at Turffontein by acommanding three lengths and his jockey on that day,Anton Marcus, is back in the saddle. His trainer has anunassailable lead in the SA Trainers' Championship andhe has won the Durban July twice in the last threeyears. Legal Eagle is also extremely well in at theweights, carrying only 54kgs. The Durban July, however, is a race in whichfavorites seem to find more trouble than luck, with onlyfive favorites saluting the judge in the last twentyyears. Cont. p7

Durban July Looks Wide Open cont. Tarry however has another 3-year-old ready to acceptthe crown should Legal Eagle fluff his lines. Stablecompanion French Navy (SAf) (Count Dubois {GB}) is adual G1 winner with victories in the G1 SA Classic andthe G1 Daily News 2000 behind his name. He has54.5kgs on his back and the services of his regular pilotRaymond Danielson. Of the fillies, Mike de Kock's Majmu (Aus) (Redoute'sChoice {Aus}) is the one they all have to beat. An easywinner of the Cape Fillies Guineas over 1600 meters, she produced another runaway victory against her ownsex in the G1 Empress Club Stakes. Stepping out inopen company for the first time in the G1 President'sChampions Challenge, however, she ran into theextremely talented Wylie Hall (Aus) (Redoute's Choice{Aus}), who beat her comfortably to the line. Majmuhas the services of De Kock's stable jockey AnthonyDelpech, but she meets the 5-year-old Wylie Hall againand it is unlikely that she can reverse the finishing orderin her favor. Last year's winner, Wylie Hall, who subsequently lostthe race in the boardroom, has to be one of thefavorites for this year's edition and his trackwork thisweek confirmed that he is in top condition. His trainerWeiho Marwing is out to exact revenge and he hasengaged the services of previous July winning jockey,Bernard Fayd'Herbe. With 58kgs, Wylie Hall will carryonly half a kilo more than in 2014 and at 5-1 in thebetting, he is very good value for money.

Lastly, one has to consider dual G1 Queen's Plateand G1 J & B Met winner Futura (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}),partnered by Sean Cormack. With a merit rating of 120to Wylie Hall's 116, he is by far the superior horse onpaper. Yet races are not run on paper and Futura hasseveral obstacles to overcome. Tattersalls= Acquires Brightwells: Tattersalls Ltd have taken over the bloodstockauctioneering business of Brightwells in the UK.Brightwells have been holding bloodstock auctions atAscot Racecourse since 1990 and at CheltenhamRacecourse since 2009. The company held a total of15 sales at the two venues for a combined sale ringturnover of just over ,14.5 million in 2014. TheCheltenham sales are focused on selling national hunthorses, mostly with racecourse or point-to-point form, while the Ascot sales include a flat breeze-up sale.Tattersalls does not host any national hunt sales in theUK and this acquisition will enable Britains largestbloodstock auction house to serve a wider range ofbreeders, racehorse owners and trainers, as well asadding two further auction sites to the Tattersallsheadquarters in Newmarket.
