The mare, in foal to Turgeon, was consigned by Haras de Grandcamp and sold to Irish owner and breeder Olive O=Driscoll. Yester- day=s top-priced foal was lot 517 , a colt by Ballingary (Ire) from a top jumping family. Also consigned by Haras de Grandcamp, the foal was purchased for i90,000 by Herve Barjot on behalf of Pegasus Farms. Chief among the flat purchases was Haras de la Cauviniere=s hip 573 , the filly Pasta Brown (Fr) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who is out of a half to the top-class Mas- ter David. Marc-Antoine Bergracht=s MAB Agency paid i50,000 for the four-year-old, who is also from the family of Bint Pasha and Nayef. Two days later, the Bayakoa H. was contested overthe same course and distance. This Grade II contestattracted a dozen fillies, with the eight American-breddefenders being opposed by one British-bred challenger, one Irish-bred and two Chilean-breds. Although theAmerican team included the first two choices in thebetting, they were out-pointed by the foreign-breds,with the British-bred Foxysox just getting the better ofthe Irish-bred Round Heels, with the Chilean importsbeing next across the line. Interestingly, Phantom Rose is a daughter of the greatDanzig, whereas Foxysox is by Danzig=s son Foxhound, and these two fillies lend support to the theory that theDanzig male line is heading for a resurgence in America,as more and more tracks are changed to synthetic.Castleton Lyons has imported Danzig=s proven sonAnabaa, while Coolmore has switched Danzig=s royallybred son Mull of Kintyre to Ashford, where he will joinMonashee Mountain, another Danzig horse who startedhis career in Ireland. Adena Springs is also gearing upfor the switch away from traditional dirt, with a teamwhich includes Danehill=s Derby-winning son NorthLight.

Foxysox arrived in the U.S. having failed to win infive starts in Britain. However, she had more than re-couped her purchase price of13,000gns when third of 30 in avery valuable sales race atNewmarket, and it took40,000gns to buy her atTattersalls= Horses in TrainingSale. She has proved an excel-lent buy, as she has now wonfive of her nine starts and it wasby only a head that she wasbeaten by Arravale in the GI DelMar Oaks. Foxysox=s sire Foxhound is a true globe-trotter. In-deed, I made the following comment about him back in2001: AThere is no denying the potential of Foxhound, anextremely well-bred stallion son of Danzig, but thequestion exists as to whether he has been in any oneplace long enough to build up a sound future. His his-tory so far is that he spent his first season in 1996 inIreland, at a fee of IR4,000gns, before being transferredto Kentucky, where he initially stood for as little as$4,000 at Hill =n= Dale Farms. Then Foxhound=s Irishcrop reached the track in 1999, with several of themdoing so well that Foxhound was whisked back acrossthe Atlantic to stand at Castle Hyde Stud in 2000. Hisconnections then faced the task of maintaining interestand support in a stallion whose stock is racing mainly atminor tracks in the States and it was decided to leaseFoxhound to stand the 2002 season in England.@ Foxhound has also stood in Chile and has spent sev-eral Southern-Hemisphere seasons in Australia, whichappears to have become his permanent home since2004. Foxhound generally covered very ordinary mares inhis first season in Ireland, but still managed to sire thegroup winners Mount Abu (G1 Prix de la Foret) and KierPark and the Listed winners Scarteen Fox and PeruvianChief. His best representative in the USA beforeFoxysox=s arrival was probably the Grade II-placed USS Tinosa. I fear that Foxhound=s many changes of location haveultimately counted against him, but he had every rightto be a successful stallion, as his first three dams arethose celebrated mares Lassie Dear, Gay Missile andMissy Baba. You=ll hardly need me to recount all of this femaleline=s magic moments. Suffice it to say that MissyBaba=s six stakes winners included champion sire RajaBaba; that Gay Missile produced four stakes winnersheaded by the top-class Gay Mecene; and that LassieDear also produced four stakes winners, includingWeekend Surprise, the phenomenal producer who wasvoted 1992=s Broodmare of the Year. Weekend Sur-prise=s three eldest sons have all sired winners in theultra-competitive action of Breeders= Cup day, with A.P.Indy being responsible for Tempera, Honor Grades forAdoration and Summer Squall for Storm Song. Week-end Surprise=s half-brother Deerhound also got into theact by siring Countess Diana, winner of the JuvenileFillies in 1997.

Deerhound and Foxhound are brothers and they arealso closely related to Honor Grades, another son ofDanzig. Incidentally, Missy Baba=s grandson GayMecene ranks as the broodmare sire of Anabaa, one ofDanzig=s champion sprinting sons, and of Anabaa=shighly talented three-parts brother Key of Luck. Agrandson of Danzig, Key of Luck sired the Derby winnerAlamshar. Although Foxysox was an inexpensive yearling, shecomes from a sprinting family which has producedsome very fast horses, including Fayruz, Jester, Avertiand Reesh. Her broodmare sire Royal Academy wasalso an excellent sprinter, but he stretched his staminato a mile when he scored on Breeders= Cup day. Theunder-valued Royal Academy is developing into a suc-cessful dam sire, this year=s top European juvenile fillyFinsceal Beo being another notable winner out of one ofhis daughters.

SHARP HUMOR TO STAND FOR $12,500 Grade IIwinner Sharp Humor (Distorted Humor--Bellona, by

Hansel), who was retired lastweek to WinStar Farm in Ver-sailles, Kentucky, will stand hisfirst season at stud for a fee of$12,500, live foal. A winner ofthree stakes, including the GIISwale S. earlier this year, thethree-year-old Sharp Humor wasalso second to eventual Ken-tucky Derby hero Barbaro in the

GI Florida Derby. He joins his sire at WinStar as part ofa WinStar/Taylor Made Stallion Venture.

HORSEMEN SUE NYRA According to publishedreports, New York horsemen have sued the New YorkRacing Association for its handling of between $15million and $20 million in funds that they claim shouldhave been directed to purses. The horsemen allege thatNYRA underestimated future handle when calculatingthe amount to distribute to the purse cushion, then didnot make up the difference between the estimate andwhat was actually wagered, instead using the funds foroperating costs. The suit was filed Thursday, Nov. 30in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan, and will be anaddendum on NYRA=s bankruptcy case. A hearing hasnot yet been scheduled.

REGULATION OF STEROIDS TO BE RECOM-MENDED By Tom LaMarra and Deirdre B. Biles, cour-tesy of www.bloodhorse.com.

Members of the Racing Medication and Testing Con-sortium are expected to recommend regulation of ana-bolic steroids in racehorses, but the timetable for theregulations remains up in the air. RMTC officials earlierin the year said they hoped to have a policy by the endof this year. There has been some division over theissue, in part because Federal Drug Administra-tion-sanctioned anabolic steroids are widely used inracehorses and are listed as Class 4 therapeutic drugs. There is some support in the industry to have anabolicsteroids reclassified to a Class 3 substance under Asso-ciation of Racing Commissioners International guide-lines, but it remains to be seen if that recommendationwill be issued and regulators will embrace it. The use ofsteroids in racehorses is regulated in other countries."The RMTC is going to recommend that anabolic ste-roids be regulated in racing," Dr. Rick Arthur, equinemedical director for the California Horse Racing Board, said Dec. 2 during the "Purchase Exam at Public Auc-tion Forum" at the American Association of EquinePractitioners convention in San Antonio, Texas.
