Qatar Racing=sStrong Suit (Rahy) at least has on his side that he hasbeen here twice and won on both occasions, in the G2 Coventry S. at two and in last year=s G3 Jersey S.Other wins in the G2 Lennox S. at Goodwood in Julyand G2 Challenge S. at Newmarket in October cameover seven furlongs and he is yet to win at this trip.AStrong Suit is only rated two pounds behindExcelebration, but our fellow is already a dual RoyalAscot winner and he is twice the price,@ trainer RichardHannon commented. A[Jockey Richard Hughes]reckoned that his last bit of work up at Everleigh wasthe best he has ever done and obviously, the more theground dries out, the better our chance. Realistically,we are all chasing second spot behind Frankel, but wewon=t be thinking that way. Why I'll Have Another Is One of 2012's Best Sports Stories“I'll Have Another took the horse racing world by storm this year, winningthe Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and making him one of the beststories of 2012. Bought for only $35,000, I'll Have Another proved hisworth in his second year racing, but he came from obscurity to do so” Shawn Brubaker, Bleacher Report

He was supplemented for this at a costof ,25,000 and the forecast good-to-soft going doesnot concern Rohaut, who told Racing Post, ALike hisfather he doesn=t want it really heavy, but soft groundwon=t bother him. AT THE READY FOR AN EARLY DAWN Dawn Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) made theperfect start for his freshman sire (by Galileo {Ire})when winning on the opening day of Ireland=s turfseason at The Curragh in March, and he will break newground for the Dalham Hall Stud resident if prevailing ina competitive renewal of the G2 Coventry S. overAscot=s straight six panels today. Stepping up from thatinitial success, he earned J “TDN Rising Star” Jstatus with an impressive score in a Naas conditionsheat last month, and registered a hat trick back therewhen posting a first stakes victory in the June 4 ListedRochestown S. last time. The chestnut lines up hereinstead of waiting for the Listed Chesham S. on themeet=s final day. Aidan O=Brien and Richard Hannon have won four outof the last five renewals of this event between them, scoring twice each, and the champion trainers have sixagainst the field this time. O=Brien=s Ballydoyleoperation, which will bid for a record-equaling seventhvictory, sends out Cristoforo Colombo(Henrythenavigator), whose freshman sire (byKingmambo) won this in 2007. He impressed whentaking out a May 20 Navan maiden in the SusanMagnier silks, and will be ridden by Joseph O=Brien.ACristoforo Colombo seems a nice horse,@ his ridercommented. AIt is obviously a big step up from winninga maiden to the Coventry, but he seems to have donethings right at home.@ Joining him is the Joe Allencolorbearer Lines of Battle (War Front), who earned aJ “TDN Rising Star” J badge when registering ahead success from Dawn Approach=s stablemate LeitirMor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who re-opposeshere, in a competitive maiden at the Curragh May 27,and gets the assistance of Ryan Moore this time. Hannon=s quartet is spearheaded by Sir Prancealot(Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), who bids to give the Wiltshireconditioner a third win in four years, and who added toan easy maiden score at Bath with a decisive win fromTop Boy (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) in last month=sListed National S. at Sandown. The trainer=s associationwith Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum has reapedinstant dividends, and stablemate The Taj (Street Cry{Ire}) comes here off an eyecatching maiden win atDoncaster in his only out 11 days ago. Retained riderPaul Hanagan will continue in the plate. Olympic Glory(Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) debuted on the same day as TheTaj, and opened up with a wide-margin successtraversing Goodwood=s undulations. Haydock maidenwinner Master of War (GB) (Compton Place {GB})completes the team. AThis has been a lucky race for usand, while we have no Canford Cliffs this year, we runfour very good horses,@ revealed Hannon. AIt was a tossof coin as to whether we ran Sir Prancealot here orwaited for the [G2] Norfolk [S. on Thursday], but[owner] Andrew [Tinkler] was keen to go on the firstday and that is fine by me.

Some people seem to think that he was a bit flatteredby his National victory at Sandown, but, believe me, heis a serious horse. He has unbelievable speed, but he isby Tamayuz so we know that he is not just awhizz-bang sprinter. While we don=t know yet whateffect the draw will have, two off the stands rail is nota bad place to be and will hopefully enable [jockey]Richard [Hughes] to get a good early position. Theothers are all making a giant leap from winning theirmaidens, but we like all three. The Taj did a brilliantpiece of work with Olympic Glory a few days beforeboth made their debuts, so it was no surprise whenthey both won. I know the form of The Taj=s Doncasterrace has taken a few knocks, but he will have learned alot from that and Paul Hanagan was very impressed.Olympic Glory won many over when winning atGoodwood and, while we did think about waiting a bitlonger with him, [owner] Julie [Wood] loves to haverunners here. He is a big, smashing Choisir colt whodeserves his place in the field. Master of War won wellat Haydock and we were thinking of taking him toChepstow or Bath last week, but he then did animpressive bit of work and we immediately abandonedthose plans and upgraded him to the Ascot team.@

AAlhebayeb was our first winner for Sheikh Hamdanup at Nottingham,@ their trainer said. AHe was still verygreen on that debut and has come on a lot for that andwe like him. Lyric Ace is a tough little horse, who wonfive lengths at Leicester and then bolted up on thePolytrack at Kempton. He was set to go to The Curraghat the Irish Guineas meeting but did not scope well, sowe have given him a break and he has bounced backwell. Ask Dad is a bit bigger than his brother, Tell Dad,who did us proud last season and, though he wasbeaten on his debut at Newmarket recently, he showeda lot of promise.@ Dylanbaru was runner-up in the listedMarble Hill S. at The Curragh May 26 and sets thestandard on that form.

Take a Walk on the Soft Side (of Good)... Dry weather, which is forecast to continue untilThursday, has enabled the track condition for theopening day to stabilize at good-to-soft, but a policy ofwatering should not be required at this year=s RoyalAscot meet, according to Clerk of the Course ChrisStickels. AWe had a drying weekend until Sunday nightwhen, overnight and Monday morning, we had sixmillimeters of rain. It has made the going good-to-softnow, and I think it will just be on the easy side. It isgoing to dry a little bit between now and then--it is juston the easy side on the straight course and a bit easieron the round. We are forecast drier conditions beforesome rain again Thursday. The course has taken therain exceptionally well, and it does dry and drain quitequickly, but we won=t need to add any water. I thinkit=s going to be completely natural this year. Thursday isquite tricky as there is a low [pressure front]threatening to push in from the Atlantic towards theend of the week. It is looking more threatening, but thetiming and amount of rain it is likely to deliver is tricky. The estimate at the moment is between four and sevenmillimeters during the day on Thursday.@

Camelot on Course for Derby Double... Camelot (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) was yesterdayconfirmed for next Saturday=s G1 Dubai Duty Free IrishDerby at The Curragh. Derrick Smith, Susan Magnierand Michael Tabor=s G1 2000 Guineas and G1 EpsomDerby hero will attempt to provide trainer Aidan O=Brienwith a 10th edition after his wife Anne Marie said,AAidan is planning to run Camelot in the Dubai DutyFree Irish Derby, but no final decision has been takenyet. He always has a few horses in the race and theother horses are still all in the mix. It will be theweekend before plans are finalised.@

Caviar Fails to Frighten Off Jubilee Rivals... It appears the lure of Royal Ascot has outweighed thefear of taking on Australia=s Queen of Speed, BlackCaviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}), as 21 contendersremain engaged in Saturday=s G1 Diamond Jubilee S. atRoyal Ascot after yesterday=s confirmation andsupplementary stage. The unbeaten wondermare hascontinued with light exercise as she builds up to herdate with destiny, and the arrival of big-race partnerLuke Nolen has seen the final pieces of the jigsaw fallinto place. ABlack Caviar looks great and has travelledover well,@ the rider told Racing Post. AShe probably hada lot less to drink on the plane than I did. I know[trainer] Peter [Moody] is very happy with her. I rodeher in her last gallop before she left and she was in verygood nick. I=m not worried too much about theundulations [of Ascot] as she travels very well andtakes a big stride. She goes great on straight tracks athome and she is the highest-rated in the race.@ Moodyadded, ABlack Caviar is the fittest I=ve ever had her. Imade sure she was pretty straight when she got on theplane and she hasn=t needed to work since. Hopefullywe can get her on the [Newmarket] Limekilns [gallops]Tuesday morning and give her a gallop over threefurlongs or something, but nothing major."

Her task will be no straighforward affair as a host oftop speedsters also stood their ground for thesix-furlong dash. Last year=s winner and leadingdomestic hope Society Rock (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar{Ire}) tuned up for this main target with a third in lastmonth=s G2 Duke of York S. at York. The JamesFanshawe trainee may yet be joined by last month=s G2 Temple S. victor Bated Breath (GB) (Dansili {GB}),whose participation in today=s G1 King=s Stand S.remains dependent on suitable track conditions.International spice is enhanced by the presence of lastterm=s G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest heroine MoonlightCloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {GB}), who was imperiouswhen taking out Longchamp=s G3 Prix du Palais-Royalon seasonal return earlier this month; and the FawziNass-trained raider from Bahrain, Krypton Factor (GB)(Kyllachy {GB}), who plundered the G1 Golden Shaheenon Meydan=s World Cup card, but was undone whenencountering unsuitably softened going when fifth inKranji=s G1 International Sprint last month.

Sequence Has Paris Aim... The Niarchos Family=s G1 Epsom Derby runner-upMain Sequence (Aldebaran) is being targeted at the G1 Grand Prix de Paris, connections announcedyesterday. Alan Cooper, racing manager to the owner-breeders, revealed that the Bastille Day feature atLongchamp July 14 was the preference over the IrishDerby for the David Lanigan trainee. @We did speak toThe Curragh, but we decided to give him some moretime and the plan is to go for the Grand Prix de Paris,@he said.

To use a rather non-PC-sounding idiom, there=s morethan one way to skin a cat. This is perfectly highlightedby the histories of two of today=s outstandinglysuccessful breeding operations. The two I have in mindare those developed by Prince Khalid Abdulla and HHThe Aga Khan, who between them have bred five ofthe last 12 Arc winners. Although these two breeders are very similar in thatthey rarely acquire new bloodlines at auction, theirpolicies differ considerably. Whereas the Prince derivesthe greatest satisfaction from developing the familiesdescending from mares purchased early in Juddmonte=shistory, such as Frankel=s third dam Rockfest, the AgaKhan believes it is beneficial to occasionally introducenew families. The latest infusion of new blood into the Aga Khan=sbroodmare band came in March 2005, when hecompleted the purchase of the bloodstock empire builtby the late Jean-Luc Lagardere. Within months the Agahad started to reap rich dividends from his sizeableinvestment, with Vadawina, Valixir and Carlotamix allbecoming Group 1 winners. The Aga=s purchase of the Lagardere bloodstock wasfurther vindicated on that remarkable Arc weekend in2009, when his colors were carried to victory to anastonishing total of seven group races, including five atGroup 1 level. No fewer than four of the seven wereproduced by mares or fillies which were part of theLagardere package, these winners being Varenar (G1 Prix de la Foret), Manighar (G2 Prix de Chaudenay),Siyouni (G1 Prix Jean-Luc lagardere) and Rosanara (G1 Prix Marcel Boussac). It therefore came as nosurprise that Lagardere mares were responsible for twoof the Aga=s three runners in the Prix de Diane--or thatboth these broodmares were daughters of Linamix, theremarkable stallion who justified all the opportunitiesthat Lagardere gave him.

Caulfield cont.

Sagawara had already become a Group 1 winner, inthe Prix Saint-Alary, but much less was known aboutValyra, who was making her stakes debut after winningboth her starts. We now know that Valyra is a highlytalented filly, who may one day prove herself worthy ofmention in the same breath as the imperious Zarkava, who ranks alongside Shemaka, Vereva, Zainta, Daryabaand Sarafina as one of the Aga=s six previous Dianeheroines. In becoming the first to beat the excellent BeautyParlour, Valyra also provided a valuable reminder thather sire, Azamour, deserves wider support than he hassometimes received. For example Valyra, together withthe group-placed Mandistana, is one of only 32members of Azamour=s 2009 crop and he has only 432-year-olds this year. Fortunately, Azamour=s first crop did well, with fourof its 101 members becoming group/graded winners.Their achievements restored breeders= faith in a horsewho had initially earned their respect with a very solidracing record. The versatile son of Night Shift hadfollowed up an unbeaten juvenile career with Group 1victories over a mile (St James=s Palace S.), a mile anda quarter (Irish Champion S. and Prince of Wales=s S.)and a mile and a half (King George VI and QueenElizabeth S.). Azamour=s second crop, born in 2008, hasmaintained his momentum. Among this crop=s 52 foalswere another four group winners, including the Group 2winner Shankardeh, the Classic-placed Native Khan andthis year=s Group 3 winner Columbian. Altogether thiscrop has produced eight stakes winners, with anothertwo being placed at group level, which amounts to aconsiderable achievement. The renewed faith in Azamour resulted in a book of132 mares in 2010 and more than 150 in 2011, so theGilltown Stud stallion will again have numbers on hisside from next year. A remarkable aspect of Azamour=srecord is that he has only four foals of racing age out ofLinamix mares.

In addition to Valyra they include the Group 3 winnerColumbian and the group-placed Mandistana. Two ofthe three have no inbreeding in their first fivegenerations and Valyra=s only inbreeding is a fairlyroutine 3x5 to Northern Dancer. I suspect thiscombination owes its success partly to theircomplementary conformation. At 16.2 hands, Azamouris a big, powerful individual capable of putting somestrength into Linamix=s more refined daughters. Linamix=s story was an unusual one. When he retired tohis breeder=s stud in France he labored under thehandicap of being the only high-class winner sired byMendez during his short innings in France. Mendez wasdispatched to Japan, as was Mendez=s sire Bellypha, after he failed to maintain the high quality he achievedwith his first few crops. Consequently Linamix wasn=tpopular with breeders and the onus was therefore onLagardere to help him prove his worth. Lagardere did soby buying quite a few mares at the sales, and many ofthem enjoyed tremendous success with Linamix. Thestallion=s legacy consists of 13 winners at Group 1level, 12 at Group 2 and 17 at Group 3, with themajority of them bred by Lagardere. His total of morethan 70 stakes winners represented more than 8% ofhis output. Linamix=s broodmare daughters now havenine Group 1 winners to their credit in the NorthernHemisphere, with Valyra following Clodovil (Pouled=Essai des Poulains), Natagora (1,000 Guineas) andBlue Bunting (1,000 Guineas and Irish Oaks) as theirfourth Classic winner. Another of their Group 1winners, Montmatre, was an impressive winner of theGrand Prix de Paris, a race considered by many to be amore accurate equivalent to the Derby than the Prix duJockey-Club. Another Linamix mare is the dam of the2-year-old Be Be King, winner of a Group 1 in Brazilearlier this month. Valyra=s dam Valima was good enough to win thePrix Imprudence and she has made a tremendous startas a broodmare, as Valyra is her third foal and thirdstakes winner. Watch out for her 2010 Nayef colt, whois in training with Alain de Royer-Dupre. Valyra=s Group2-winning half-sister Valasyra started her broodmarecareer in 2011 with a visit to the mighty Sea The Stars, who also covered Valima last year. Valima was by nomeans Linamix=s first success story from a family whichcame into the Lagardere studs with the purchase ofValyra=s fourth dam Vadsa, a Halo mare bred by E.P. Taylor. Linamix was mated to Vadsa=s daughterVadlava to produce Vadlamixa, a listed winner whobecame the dam of Valixir (G1 Prix d=Ispahan and G1 Queen Anne S.) and second dam of Vadawina (G1 Prix Saint-Alary). Linamix also did well with Vadsa=sdaughter Vadsa Honor, with their son Vahorimix goingon to win the G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains and G1 PrixJacques le Marois (both on disquaifications). This familyis arguably best known, though, for Val Royal. Thishalf-brother to Valyra=s second dam Vadlawysa won theBreeders= Cup Mile before siring the dual 2,000 Guineaswinner Cockney Rebel.
