Fame and Glory went from a Navan maiden to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in the space of threeweeks in late season and showed battling qualities anda touch of class to hit the target on both occasions. With a host of live Derby contenders at home, the factthat he was chosen to represent the stable in the 10-furlong G3 Ballysax S. was a significant pointer asto the regard in which he was held. After defying afive-pound penalty in that Apr. 19 Leopardstown con-test, he emulated the stable=s past luminaries Galileo(Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) and High Chaparral (Ire) (Sadler=sWells) by doubling up in the G2 Derrinstown StudDerby Trial S. over the same track and trip May 10.

His perfect tally went west in the June 6 Blue Ri-band, but jockey Seamus Heffernan was one of a fewto suggest that the result could have been different hadSea the Stars not been able to use his abundant speedto maximum effect. Even without the dual Classicwinner in this line-up, the Ballydoyle team was intenton cranking up the pressure. In the early going, Rock-hampton (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) set a furious gallop to stringthe field out across Kildare, while Johnny Murtagh wascontent to wait in mid-pack. Only asked a question asColm O=Donoghue committed on Golden Sword at thetop of the straight, Fame and Glory gathered in hisbarnmate readily before the eighth pole and neededonly to be pushed out to confirm his superiority. AIt wasa good, solid gallop all the way and he relaxed verywell,@ Murtagh explained. AI was rowing him along and, coming down the hill, I asked him to take closer orderand he moved up very easily. We went by Colm welland it was just hands and heels from there. The way heworked during the week, I knew he was going to dosomething like this and he is a Group 1 winner at twowho had had a lovely prep. I rode Sinndar (Ire) (GrandLodge) and Alamshar (Ire) (Key of Luck) to win this andthis horse has a similar profile--he could be a horse forthe G1 Irish Champion S. [at Leopardstown Sept. 5]later in the year.@ Trainer Aidan O=Brien, whose sevenwins include the last four editions of the race, added,AHe was special last year and has a lot of tacticalspeed. He is a great traveller and is classy. Droppingback to a mile and a quarter will not be a problem forhim and the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe [at Long-champ Oct. 4] will really be considered as I don=t thinkthe ground matters to him. It was a great performancefrom Golden Sword. He improved again from Epsom.@

RESULTS OF LASIX STUDY TO BE RELEASEDThe results of a study led by Colorado State Universityand research partners into the health and performanceeffects of Lasix will be announced Monday morning inSouth Africa at The Vaal Turf Club racecourse, nearJohannesburg. The press conference will be archivedand streamed and will be available at http://www.cobainltd.com/phumelelapress after 7 a.m.U.S. Eastern Daylight time this morning. The studyundertook a massive research effort involving 200horses in South Africa that competed in four days ofracing coordinated for the purposes of the study. Morethan 90 percent of Thoroughbreds in North America aregiven Lasix before racing to control bleeding. PaulMorley, a veterinarian at Colorado State University, conducted the study with co-researchers KennethHinchcliff from the University of Melbourne and AlanGuthrie from the University of Pretoria in South Africa,as use of Lasix is not allowed on race days in thatcountry. The South African racing industry also pro-vided support and funding for the study.

by Mark Simendinger I have been involved in the Thoroughbred business insome capacity for over 20 years, and this is the mostchallenging time I can recall for the industry. There isno question that the strain on tracks and farms is real, and that help is needed. Other states have tied subsi-dies from gaming to the horse industry. It now appearsKentucky may do the same in order to protect the jobsand the state's "signature industry." The timing and form of this help, or if the help comesat all, remains uncertain. The most recent Special Ses-sion of the Kentucky General Assembly raised hopeswhen the slots bill progressed farther than ever bypassing the House and, separately, when the Presidentof the Senate acknowledged the problems of the indus-try and offered a non-slots tax solution of approxi-mately $100 million. While the sincerity and practicalityof the President's proposal has been questioned bymany in the horse industry, the fact that the industry'sproblem was acknowledged by the Senate Presidentwas a major step forward. Unfortunately, the slots billwas killed in Senate committee and the Senate solutionnever gained traction in the House after passing theSenate unanimously. Frustrated, some industry members lashed out, remi-niscent of the old saying, "shoot first and ask questionslater." Most of the anger has been directed towardSenate President David Williams, an unabashed oppo-nent of expanded gaming. President Williams is respon-sible for assigning the slots bill to the Senate Appropria-tions & Revenue Committee, where it met its predicteddemise, preventing a vote of the full Senate. Manyindustry members believed they had the votes to passthe slots bill if the bill got to the Senate floor, so notgetting past the A&R committee was a stinging blow.Every senator on the A&R committee who votedagainst the bill drew flak, with Senators Alice ForgyKerr and Ernie Harris attracting the most. Still, somebullets were saved for Senator Damon Thayer, hereto-fore the go-to person for the horse industry in the Sen-ate. Not a member of Senate A&R, Thayer never votedon the slots bill, but he is blamed for not doing anythingto prevent President Williams from sending the bill tothe unfavorable A&R committee. Senator Thayer has proven to be one of the Thor-oughbred industry's best friends during his tenure in thelegislature. He has led many issues, such as the cre-ation of the Kentucky Breeders' Incentive Award Fund, sales integrity legislation, stronger medication rules,Racing Commission funding and, in this special session, incentives for the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Op/Ed Feedback. cont.

Thayer's past successes now seem to haunt him. Theindustry has placed an unrealistic expectation of poweron him. AControl where David Williams sends this bill,@they say. Expecting Senator Thayer to be able to checkSenator Williams is like asking Rajon Rondo to guardShaquille O'Neal. Rondo's a nice player and gets a lotdone. But he will not stop Shaq when he makes up hismind to go to the basket. It just won't happen, no mat-ter how much we want it to. Senator Thayer asked thatthe bill be assigned to the committee he chairs, Stateand Local Government. The bill was sent to Senate A&R. Further irony for those blaming Thayer is that, for allthose who believed the industry had the votes on theslots bill if it made it to the Senate Floor, every one ofthem was counting Thayer as a "yes" vote. So Thayerdoes not vote on the slots bill, is counted as a "yes" ifit gets to the floor, is the major driver of the Breeders'Cup incentive, and ends the session as a legislatorbeing painted as against the horse industry. "He couldhave done more to stop Williams," they say. Whilemore can always be done, Williams was going to dowhat he felt was right. Thayer making an ineffectivegrandstanding move would have served him and theindustry no good. Could he have done more? I am surehe could. So could a whole host of other industry lead-ers, such as prominent politically connected farm own-ers, racetrack company CEOs, U.S. congressmen andsenators. Many of these people are more influential ormuch higher ranking Republicans than Senator Thayer.Either the industry did not ask these powerful people toinfluence Senate President Williams, or else they triedand failed. In either case, that is not Senator Thayer'sfault. Where was the public positioning from theseindividuals that the industry seems to crave? Thesepeople either did nothing or chose to work behind thescenes. They just didn't get blamed when the bill failed.Any objective ranking of the 38 senators on either theslots issue or on their interest in the Thoroughbredindustry would have Thayer at or near the top. Whystart shooting at the top? What about all the people inthe middle or the bottom who have given up on theindustry? Where is the disdain for them? Thayer has been responsive to industry issues andhas made it look so easy that when things do not gowell he is the first one people think of. I just hope theemotion of the moment does not find the industrylosing one of its advocates.Fire, ready, aim!Mark Simendinger is former president of Turfway Parkand a Thoroughbred owner and breeder.
