His Highness the Aga Khan added, AMrs. Tsui andChristopher=s decision to entrust the future career atstud of Sea the Stars to Gilltown Stud farm brings toeveryone at the Aga Khan Studs, as well as to mepersonally, the greatest happiness. We are all proud tohave such a remarkable athlete join the Aga Khan stal-lions at stud, and we are convinced that the Aga Khanmares, who have produced outstanding racehorsesduring the last 50 years, will breed very well indeed toSea the Stars. Mrs. Tsui and Christopher=s decision iscertainly one of the most important developments formy operation since I inherited it in 1960. I am also mostpleased that Mrs. Tsui and Christopher will be develop-ing their own breeding operation with the help of theirmagnificent horse, Sea the Stars. This horse could alsohelp develop relations to bring Chinese investment intothe European bloodstock market.@ He continued, AInkeeping with the motto of the Aga Khan Studs >successbreeds success= I look forward to the earliest opportu-nity to send my unbeaten champion Zarkava (Ire)(Zamindar) to Sea the Stars. I believe the last two Arcwinners were made for each other both in terms ofability, temperament and conformation. The best needsto be bred to the best.@ Sea the Stars, a half-brother toleading sire Galileo (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) and two othertop-level winners, retired with a record of eight wins innine starts, with earnings of ,4,417,163. Tabbed as aJ “TDN Rising Star” J following his graduation in hissecond start, the homebred son of 1993 Arc heroineUrban Sea closed out 2008 with a win in the G2Beresford S. He went from strength to strength thisyear at three, capturing the G1 2000 Guineas, G1 Ep-som Derby, G1 Eclipse S., G1 Juddmonte InternationalS. and G1 Irish Champion S. before adding the Arc tohis trophy case.

Royal Diamond is set to be targeted at theNorthumberland Plate at Newcastle in June, a valuablestaying handicap. "He=s a proper horse and has doneeverything right and will be put away now until nextseason,@ Dods added. AWe thought he was goodenough to pay a proper price for, and Andrew had saidto go to 350,000gns, but we had to go a bit further."

They Come From the Land Down Under... Australian buyers have been stronger than ever atthis year=s sale ahead of next week=s 150th MelbourneCup, and agent Geoffrey Faber paid 230,000gns forMartial Law (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), selling as hip 613, foran undisclosed client based in Victoria. "He=ll hopefullybecome a nice staying horse,@ said Faber, a one-timeRacing Post journalist who spent seven years in Dubaias a steward before moving to Australia. AWe werekeen to get a three-year-old colt, and hope he can im-prove. There are not many like him at this sale.@ AgentGrant Pritchard-Gordon was also shopping for Australia, and he paid 210,000gns for Fanjura (Ire) (Marju {Ire}),who will join Lee Freedman and race for the Ball AndChain syndicate. The four-year-old went through thering as hip 492. AHe=ll head out in January and thenhave a couple of outings in the autumn and, hopefully, could be running at the [>10] Spring Carnival,@ he said.Cont. p3.

Lots to Note... Although Dubai Carnival shoppers have not made thesame mark they did 12 months ago, buyers from vari-ous Middle-Eastern countries were busy. Among themwas Saudi Arabia-based Frank McGovern, who spent200,000gns on Big Bound (Grand Slam). He was of-fered as hip 649 from John Gosden=s stable. The Group3-placed sophomore was bought for the stables of KingAbdullah and his sons. Agent Anthony Stroud--acting for an undisclosedlong-standing client--spent 175,000gns on ListedChesham S. winner Big Audio (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}). Thebay juvenile sold as hip 425 from Richard Hannon=syard.

Colonies Shopping... Gordian Troeller, acting for Californian trainer JimCassidy, paid 150,000gns for G3 Princess Margaret S.runner-up Full Mandate (Ire) (Acclamation {Ire}). Thetwo-year-old filly, offered as hip 432, had been men-tioned as a candidate for the Breeders= Cup JuvenileFillies Turf following her second-place finish in theGoffs Million last month. AShe was the main reason Icame to the sale and was the one I really wanted," saidTroeller. "To me, she ticked all the right boxes. She=s agreat physical specimen with a good cruising speed, and I think she could be stretched to stay a mile inAmerica.@ Troeller added, AI thought we might have togive a bit more to get her, and I think Big Audio wasalso probably cheap. My usual crowd hasn=t come overthis year, but that is mainly because Californian racingis in trouble. Certainly one guy I buy for has decided totake a year out, but he should be back next year." Thetwo-year-old gelding Lethal Combination (Broken Vow),hip 459, will join either Kiaran McLaughlin or GrahamMotion after being bought for 100,000gn by agentJohn McCormack. Cont. p4.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY As the major 2009 yearling sale season staggers toits conclusion with today=s session at Fasig-TiptonOctober, one of the patently obvious elements of theThoroughbred yearling market is its reliance on theMaktoum family. We all know this is the case, but theabsence of an international statistical bureau for ourbusiness makes it difficult to measure just what theirimpact has been. Here we ride to the rescue. We=vecompiled this ourselves, so as usual we have to saythese figures are not official. Here=s what we did: Weadded all the tickets that were signed at the majoryearling sales by the four acknowledged AMaktoumfamily and friends@ buying entities for 2009: John Fer-guson, Dick O=Gorman, Shadwell and Rabbah. We didnot attempt to divine which of the purchases by Bland-ford Bloodstock might be running in Princess Haya=scolors next year, nor which of Mark Johnston=s mightbe running for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, SheikhMohammed=s son and Dubai=s Crown Prince. We calcu-lated only the purchases of the four entities listed. Thenwe spun a few dials, did a few currency conversions, and figured out, as best we could, what the numberstell us. The first thing they reveal is that, in two importantrespects, the 2009 European market has outsold theNorth American market: in gross and average. With theEuropean market now finished, for our purposes, 4,149yearlings have sold for the equivalent of a little over$291.6 million and averaged $70,292. With Fasig-Tipton October still to figure in, 4,541 yearlings hadsold at the North American sales, grossing a little over$279 million and averaging $61,455. Fasig-TiptonOctober won=t come close to overhauling the$12-million deficit in gross, and the North Americanaverage will certainly fall at the conclusion of this sale. The European sales have fallen 27 percent since 2007,when they grossed right at $400 million (using currentconversion rates). By comparison, the North Americansales have fallen 43 percent, or over $200 million, fromtheir comparable $490-million gross in 2007 (the NorthAmerican figures will be updated and finalized afterFasig-Tipton October). Two years ago the North Ameri-can yearling market was worth $90 million more thanthe European yearling market; now it is worth $12 million less. Even though both markets have fallen, that=s a $100-million turnaround in favor of Europe, andeven after we add the Fasig-Tipton October gross toreduce the deficit, the turnaround is still going to bevery close to $100 million.Cont. p8.

Oppenheim cont.

One of the reasons for this, as we=ve been speculat-ing in the last couple of columns, is the discernible shiftof European buyers away from America and back to-wards Europe, especially as Europe has developed farmore power stallions in the last few years than hasAmerica. This is despite the fact that Darley=s Jonabellarm has built a formidable stallion roster headed byStreet Cry, Elusive Quality, and now Medaglia d=Oro.Look at Coolmore=s buying, for example. They boughtonly six yearlings at the American sales, yet in Europe, where they stand Galileo, Montjeu and Danehill Dancer, they bought 36 yearlings. They don=t even attempt tobuy on anything like the scale of the Maktoums anymore, but when you consider their objective is to putonly their top prospects in training at Ballydoyle, it hasto be significant that they=re now buying six times asmany yearlings in Europe. Which brings us to the group of buyers dubbed, forlack of a more precise description, AMaktoum familyand friends.@ The four buying entities we=ve identifiedsigned for 104 yearlings at the three major North Amer-ican sales: Fasig-Tipton July (six), Saratoga (24) andKeeneland September (74). Those 104 yearlings cost$40,462,000, which is 15 percent of the gross for the4,541 yearlings sold at the North American sales we=vecovered, and they averaged more than six times theaverage for all yearlings sold. They bought a lot moreyearlings in Europe--272 is our count. These sold forthe equivalent of more than $54 million (see attachedtable), and they averaged a hair under $200,000. Thiswas 19 percent of the European gross of $291.6 mil-lion, and the average was nearly three times that for allEuropean yearlings. Combining the North American and European saleswe=re covering, it adds up to the four Maktoum entitieshaving bought 376 yearlings for a total of$94,689,235, an average of $251,833. This is 17 percent of the $570-million total for this year=ssales, which is down $157 million from last year=scorresponding sales and down about $300 million fromthe total two years ago. If you just pluck a figure out ofthe air, and guess that half the 111 yearlings signed forby Blandford Bloodstock, John Gosden or MarkJohnston (totaling another $16 million) will be racing inMaktoum colors, it seems an eminently fair estimate tosay they bought over 400 yearlings this year, and spentover $100 million. Cont. p9.

“Continuing the revival in the French racing and breedingindustry, Arqana’s second-tier October yearling saleposted a five percent gain in gross and a 10 percent gainin average – numbers virtually unheard of in 2009, exceptat Arqana’s August sale. This would be a heavily domesticmarket, though, so it’s testimony to the effectiveness ofthe French Owners’ Premiums, and the success of theFrench breeders, and their marketing arm, in recruitingnew owners. Overall, the European yearling sales finisheddown just seven percent in gross, and nine percent inaverage, from 2008 figures.” – Bill Oppenheim

Flight From Florida... It wasn=t exactly buried in the statistics released bythe U.S. Jockey Club last week in their preliminaryReport of Mares Bred in 2009--most of the coveragehighlighted the overall decline in the number of maresbred, the drop in the number of stallions covering 100mares, and (apparently in an effort to accentuate thepositive) the 30-percent rise of mares bred in the newslots state, Pennsylvania--but I thought the most amaz-ing factoid in the report was the demise of Florida, which was down 23 percent in number of stallionscovering and 24 percent in the number of mares bred.Only California, with a 23-percent drop in the numberof mares bred, also had a decline above 20 percent(national decline: 13.5 percent). Some of these maresand stallions have gone out of production, some havemoved to other states, but the question is, AWhat hap-pened?@ We knew when times were still good twoyears ago that all regional auction markets, Floridaincluded, were suffering as selling centralized in Ken-tucky (the two-year-old market, which then looked likeit was carrying the Florida industry, excepted). So thegrim results from OBS=s latest mixed sale earlier thismonth weren=t really surprising, and only reinforce thetrend rather than in some way foretelling it. The fact is,breeders are fleeing Florida as fast as they can get out.It would be interesting to hear from some of the emi-gres as to why this has actually happened, and whetherit=s in any way reversible. But what is for sure is that, inan industry that is declining nationally, things are look-ing even worse in Florida.

An Explanation of Black Type and Stakes Terms

Black TypeAdvertisers using “black type” in their ads in the TDN are referring tostakes races which will appear in all major sales catalogues, and which:*Have a minimum purse value of $50,000 distributed on the day of therace.*Close at least 72 hours prior to its running, and have a nomination feepaid by the owner of the entrant.*Have all entries be eligible for the purse monies used to determine theminimum purse value.*Meets specified requirements as related to restrictions andpreferences.

Non Black-Type StakesThe word “stakes” refers to non-black-type stakes, which do not appearin the catalogue page. They are:*Races in which the prize money offered is made up at least in part ofmoney put up by the owners of the horses entered, but which offers apurse of less than $50,000; or excludes horses from black-type moneylevels due to eligibility requirements;*In an advertisement, this could also refer to a mix of black-type andnon-black-type stakes (as in Sire X has 73 lifetime stakes winners).

Graded/Group Stakes There are 16 countries in the world where the racing is of a qualitysuch that that country is allowed to determine its own Graded or Groupstakes races, and they are accepted automatically as such in thecatalogue. They are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany,Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa, theUnited Arab Emirates and the United States of America. Other countries’ “Group” or “Graded” stakes either count as a black-type race, or just a win, depending upon the country, but they do nothave a Grade attached to them in the catalogue. The only exceptions tothis rule are 14 races annually in Hong Kong, Scandinavia, Singapore andTurkey of international quality. In short, though, know that if it has aGrade on it in the TDN, it’s a real Grade.
