NOTICE TO MENOMONEE FALLS WATER CUSTOMERS

    FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS

The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning October 12th and continuing through October30th. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in themains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water.

If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from usingwater or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insurethat the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron frombeing drawn into your water piping system.

If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for anadditional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining dis-colored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY.

Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by mydentist to have laser surgery to fix my gumdisease. Can you comment on whether this issafe and if it is better than the deep cleanings Ihave been getting for years?

Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsedlaser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2laser is the most widely studied laser on themarket today with the most University

supported articles outlining their safety andeffectiveness. I can tell you that lasers arewonderful tools in dentistry if they are usedcorrectly. The ADA Council on ScientificAffairs has recently published a position paperon lasers and how they are used in dentistry. Some of the salient points of their paper are asfollows:

“There are currently more than twentycleared indications for use for dental lasers inthe United States.

According to the ADA position paper: “Thedental literature indicates that when “lasers” areused as an adjunct to meticulous root planing, mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., theintentional removal of the epithelial lining of the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefitbeyond scaling and root planing alone withrespect to gain of the periodontal attachment.

Additional clinical data from properlydesigned clinical trials with adequate sample

sizes are still required before it can be known towhat extent LANAP (Laser assisted newattachment procedures) are safe and effectiveacross the spectrum of patients with chronicperiodontitis.”

So while lasers can be used for removinglesions, performing frenectemies (removingtissue that holds tongues or lips down) andmany other soft tissue applications it has notbeen found to definitively treat gum disease. If our readers wish to be seen for evaluation of

soft tissue problems, melanin premoval, frenectemies or evaluatitreatment of gum problems we invite call us for an examination at 414-464-

The winner of the Germantown-Whitefish BaySept. 25 was decided on the very last play.

Trailing 24-21 after Whitefish Bay took the leadwith 2:47 left in the game on a 26-yard field goal byBailey Wieland, Germantown mounted a final drivethat got to the Blue Dukes 10-yard line. With 6 sec-onds left, Germantown's Nate Seymour threw to JackBrzkala in the corner of the end zone, but Bay'sMichael Kirkendoll intercepted the pass.

"You can't ask for a better position to be in at theend of the game than that," Germantown Coach JakeDavis said. "It happens. We've been here and it's hap-pened to us before. That's football -- that's what thisgame is and we knew it was going to be like that."

The final play gave Whitefish Bay a 4-0 NorthShore Conference record while Germantown fell into atie with Cedarburg and Homestead with a 3-1 confer-ence record. Germantown was to host Cedarburg Oct.2.

Whitefish Bay had a 14-0 lead early in the secondquarter following 5- and 2-yard runs by VanBassindale. Germantown mounted a drive late in thesecond quarter that ended with a 4-yard run into theend zone by Seymour. Germantown then mounteddrives in the third quarter that ended with a 1-yardrun by Austin Mozdzen and a 2-yard run by Seymourto give the Warhawks 21-14 lead heading into thefourth quarter.

But the field position changed in Bay's favor on along punt that gave Germantown possession insidetheir own 20-yard line and the Blue Duke's defenseforced a punt, setting up a Whitefish Bay drive thatended on a 50-yard pass play from Jake Fisher toChristopher Caspari with 8:44 remaining. WhitefishBay's defense again stopped Germantown and the Blue

Dukes were mounting a final drive that stalled, lead-ing to the field goal by Wieland and setting the stagefor the final moments of the game.

"I was happy with the way they fought," Davissaid." We were down 14-0, just like last year, and theyfought back the same. That's what we've got to con-tinue to build on, those kinds of moments, and keeprising. We've just got to be able to start better than wedid and get after it."

32-yards at the 5:15 mark of the first quaMenomonee Falls. Bryce McMurtry of Menomoncompleted 10 of 16 passes for 190 yards whrunning 10 times for 131 yards and one touch

The Germantown School Boardapproved facility requests from theGermantown Hoops and GermantownGirls Basketball Clubs.

The Germantown Hooops boysyouth basketball program submitted arequest to use the Kennedy MiddleSchool gold and blue gyms on daysfrom Oct. 24 to April 8 from 6 to 9p.m. The Germantown girls basketballprogram submitted a request to usegyms at Kennedy Middle School, thehigh school, and MacArthur andRockfield elementary schools fromSept. 1 to April 30 from 4 to 9 p.m.

The requests from the clubs weretabled at the Sept. 14 board meeting.Besides the dates and times requested, the groups were requesting a facilitywaiver. At the Sept. 14 meeting, it wasexplained that the clubs submit theirrequests early, which are then grantedafter space has been blocked out forschool district and Park and Recreationactivities.

During last week's meeting,Superintendent Jeff Holmes said he is

recommending the current requestsfrom the clubs be approved whileallowing administration to review andwork on a process that will lead togreater transparency in the future.

Board member Bruce Warnimontsaid he looked through the availabilityof the Kennedy Middle School goldgym and determined "it is virtuallynever available" because the time hasbeen committed to the Park andRecreation Department, which wasapproved by the board in July.

Warnimont asked why the Park andRecreation requests couldn't be over-laid with the club requests to deter-mine what days and times the gymwould be available.

"I hope you do come to grips whyso much confusion resulted, because itputs us in a very bad light with ourcommunity when our only reason fordenying it two weeks ago was we did-n't know what was being requested,"Warnimont said.

Warnimont said the board reviewedrequest for several dates and timesthrough the year at the previous meet-ing.

"There has to be a better way,"Warnimont said.

In another matter before the board, the board approved an option for dis-trict employees who would be coveredby the federal Affordable Care Act(ACA). According to information in theboard packet, approximately 38 dis-trict employees would be covered by aprovision of the law which covers indi-viduals who work 30 or more hours and

do not have coverage. The boardapproved a "play by not offering"option which will have an estimatedimpact of $114,000 on the district.

"Given the current parameters of the ACA, along with input from theGallagher consulting team (whichadvises the district on health insur-ance matters), it is felt very few indi-viduals offered the coverage wouldaccept," Director of Business andAuxiliary Services Ric Ericksen statedin a memo to the board.

Soderberg also noted that 81 per-cent of students opted out of takingthe Badger Exam, a standardizedassessment that the state conducted forstudents in the third through eighthgrades. He noted the 81 percent was arecord in the state, "but more impor-tantly, adding thousands of minutes of much-need classroom instruction."

Afterward, Soderberg said that "thisboard thinks outside the box and we arefirm believers in local control. We know

what's right for our kids, outsiders donot."

(A provision in the state budget billapproved in the summer barred theBadger Exam from being used in futureyears. The state Department of PublicInstruction is currently seeking a newtest to replace that exam).

During his comments, Soderbergmentioned several district achieve-ments, including recent ACT scoreswhich were the second highest over thepast 12 years, a 98.4 percent gradua-tion rate at the high school, a numberfive ranking statewide and 584 nation-ally from US News & World Report onthe magazines list of top high schools. In addition, Soderberg noted thatRockfield, MacArthur and County Lineelementary schools were selected as"Schools of Distinction" for their imple-mentation of Positive Behavior andIntervention Support, which is a frame-work for behavior instruction.

"Things that occur in schools dailyare even getting noticed," Soderbergadded, citing the "Positive ActionPhone Call" program at Kennedy MiddleSchool that was featured on Fox Newslocally and on "K-Love" national radionetwork.

Soderberg also noted the board hastaken steps to be transparent and col-

laborative, citing the "board ings" newsletter that was staryear. Other communication include a new district Facebook

He also said a facilities sclose to being complete, and mea $3.8 million addition to RElementary School that will bethrough fund balance.
