Area communities are preparing to take theirannual stand against crime while coming together asneighbors with various National Night Out and relat-ed events.

Held across the country the first Tuesday ofAugust since 1984, the National Association of TownWatch (NATW)-sponsored National Night Out wascreated to increase awareness about police, fire andsafety programs in communities.

Since then, many area municipalities have carriedout these efforts each summer, putting their own spinon the family-friendly event.

Area events and dates include: GermantownThursday, Aug. 1, 5 to 9 p.m., at

the police department: Since 2010, the village hasheld a Neighbors Against Crime Night Out event. The N.A.C. Night Out was organized by the group ofindividuals who participated in LeadershipGermantownan annual program that encouragesleadership abilities and skill buildingthat year, and isnow largely run by dispatcher Laurie Schultz, whowas a member of that class, with assistance fromDione Jeffrey of Distinct Photography.

We used to have our own safety fair at thepolice department and this was based on the sameprinciple as that, but on a bigger scale, sheexplained.

Although the village event is not affiliat-d with the official NATW organization, thestivities are always held in early Augustnd include the same type of crime-aware-

ness and safety-promotion activitiesall at nocost to attendees.

The point is to make it a completely freenight for families to enjoy, Schultz said. Wewant them to learn that community safetybegins with them and to expand the police-

    fire-community relationship into somethingreally positive.

Along with dinner provided by Aldos R-Bar Pizza and Roberts Frozen Custard, theN.A.C. features a wide variety of activitiessuch as tae kwon do demonstrations, abounce house provided by Life Church, chil-drens games, music by a dee jay and a childID station run by the Washington CountySheriffs Department.

We also bring the fire department in fora vehicle extrication demonstration, which

people love to see, and the police departmentdoes a taser demonstration, which alwaysgoes over really well, Schultz noted.

The only problem for the tasing demo, shesaid with a laugh, is finding a volunteer.

Families will also have the opportunity tolearn how to set up a block watch program intheir area.

The main thing is building strong relation-ships within the community and helping resi-dents to see that crime prevention starts intheir neighborhoods, she said.

There will also be raffles and attendeeswill receive one raffle ticket for each non-per-ishable food item donated for St. BonifaceFood Pantry and/or gently used clothing itemfor Our Kids Closet.

From 450 participants the first year, theevent has grown into over 700 attendees, and

all the fun and education is dependent on thegenerosity of the community, Schultz empha-sized.

Because the event is funded by donationsfrom the public, anyone who would like tocontribute can write a check payable to theGermantown Police Department with NACNight in the memo portion. (All envelopescan be made to Schultzs attention.)

My account is really low right now and ifI dont get donations, future events are in jeop-

(NAPS)Turning 65 has traditionally beenassociated with the start of a persons retirementand, accordingly, his or her Medicare coverage. But if you are one of the 10,000 baby boomersturning 65 every day and you choose to work pastthe traditional retirement age, its important thatyou understand how this choice impacts yourMedicare coverage.

"Medicare enrollment can be confusing, espe-cially if you work past age 65 and have employ-er-sponsored health coverage," says Tom Paul, chief consumer officer, UnitedHealthcare."Regardless of when you plan to retire, its impor-

Keep these things in mind:Timing Matters: Pay attention to your Initial

Enrollment Period (IEP). The IEP is a seven-monthperiod that includes the three months before your65th birthday, the month of your birthday, and thethree months after your birthday. You shouldunderstand how your enrollment choices duringthe IEP could impact your health care coverageboth now and in the future. Keep in mind that

many people choose to enroll in Medicare Part A(for hospital care) when they turn 65 even if theyhave employer coverage. For most people, Part Ais available for no monthly premium and can becombined with some employer-sponsored healthplans.

Penalties and Gaps Are Possible: If you dontsign up for Medicare coverage during your IEP,you could experience a gap in coverage later andcould also incur penalties on your premiums forMedicare Part B (doctors visits) and Part D (pre-scription medications). To avoid these scenarios,be proactive in contacting Medicare to notify them

Two Germantown area businessesfered personal testimonials for the work of

conomic Development Washington CountyDWC) during a July 9 presentation to the

Washington County Board.Nova-Kem has a research and develop-

ent facility in Germantown and a produc-on facility in Seward, Ill. The company is aemical research, development and manu-cturing firm geared toward the electronicsdustry.

Nova-Kem Chief Financial Officer Randyash said the company had completed ausiness plan that called for substantial jobowth at the Illinois facility. The company

ad purchased a location in Germantown inay 2012. EDWC assisted Nova-Kem in the

6.8 million expansion project by providing500,000 in low interest gap financing.

Nash said that EDWC officials werencouraging Nova-Kem to focus on creatingbs in Washington County.

On June 2, there was an explosion at theeward, Ill. facility. Two days after the fireash and other Nova-Kem staff met with

DWC officials and sought to reassure themat Nova-Kem debt obligations would befilled.

Nash noted that midway through hisesentation he was stopped by EDWC offi-als who then said we want to see what wean do for you.

Those were the words I needed to hearnd I had no idea they were coming, Nash

said.He then added: I will never, ever forget

the personal nature of these people comingin and supporting us the way that they didand still support us the way that they did.

Nash said the company committed tobringing 11 jobs to the county this year, andhad made its 11th hire in April. One positionwas reduced following the fire at the Illinoisfacility. Nash said that as the company getour feet underneath us the plan is to have30 employees in Germantown as the firmwill consider bringing jobs from the Illinoisfacility to Germantown.

Mark Abatto, vice president and chieffinancial officer of Cambridge MajorLaboratories, spoke about a facility expan-sion that was made possible through theEDWC revolving impact loan fund.

Cambridge Majors is an outsourcingpartner to pharmaceutical and biotechnolo-gy companies, helping clients develop andmanufacture pharmaceutical ingredients inoncology, neuroscience, infectious diseasesand other areas. The company has 170 indi-viduals at its corporate headquarters inGermantown. The Germantown facility is thelocation for the companys chemistry devel-opment and large scale manufacturing oper-ations.

The company undertook a nine month,$14 million expansion of its existing facility.Cambridge Major received a $500,000revolving loan fund which Abatto said wasvery much in need in order to make sure theproject was successful and was completedon time.

During the expansion,Abatto said the companyemployed dozens of localfirms during construction, with60,000 hours put in by crewsworking on the expansion.

Abatto said the expansionallows Cambridge MajorLaboratories to double its out-put of existing assets and rein-forces cost competitivenesswith the new capabilitiesgained by the expansion. Headded that Cambridge MajorLaboratories has created 20out of 30 to 40 jobs projectedfor this year, while 27 werecreated last year.

Abatto then praised theEDWC staff, includingTscheschlok and Reinbold.

They truly are partnerswith Cambridge Major Labsin making our project a reali-ty. Without their creativity andflexibility, we probably wouldnot have been able to finishthe project and finish it ontime and on budget, Abattosaid.

Abatto also thanked the County Boardfor the pro-business approach to support-ing job growth.

We feel very fortunate to be doing busi-ness in Washington County, he added.

In his comments to the board, EDWCExecutive Director Christian Tscheschloknoted that one of the countys strategic pri-orities is promoting Washington County asa strong and robust place to do business.

I am excited to report that EconomicDevelopment Washington County is indeeddelivering real results to move the bar for-ward on this priority, Tscheschlok said.
