The Germantown Village Board last week optedagainst placing a binding referendum on the spring bal-lot that would have allowed the village to exceed itsrevenue limit to pay for increased staffing for theGermantown Fire Department.

A draft referendum prepared by the board wouldhave allowed to the village annually exceed the currentlevy limit by 8.96 percent. A proposal for a referendumhas been suggested by Fire Chief Gary Weiss. If votersapprove a referendum, it would fund additional full-timestaff for the Fire Department while also continuing touse part-time employees.

At the start of discussion on the matter at the Dec. 1Village Board meeting, Village Attorney Brian Sajdaksaid we dont have all the answers to at this point asto how state law would require the referendum to bepresented on the ballot. Sajdak said he talked with aDepartment of Revenue representative, who indicatedthat a spring referendum would not be possiblebecause the village didnt have enough information toproceed with a referendum and suggested the villagewait on the question. However, a representative fromthe Wisconsin League of Municipalities indicated that
