PET OF THE WEEK This extremely friendly, social, sweetie piewas transferred from MADACC (Milwaukee

Animal Control) due to lack of space. At over90 pounds, Chief is a big BIG boy with a bigBIG heart! He is the super cuddly, oaf type, and is sure to make everyone fall in love with his silly, affectionatetemperament. He does lack some manners (will counter surf forfood, jumps up on people, pulls some on leash) so he will need anowner that will establish a structured routine and provide dailyexercise. After all, a tired dog is a good dog! Dog savvy childrenover 6 years would be best, as he may knock small children over.No cats for this boy, but he is good with playful, large dogs that willtolerant his exuberant, super playful nature. Chief has been here fora very short time, but he has quickly stolen all of our hearts!

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

Dear Dr. Winter, I need implants in my upper and lowerarches. I have had several consultations and opinions all overthe board! Some of the consults said I only needed 4 implantsfor the upper and 4 for the lower and others have said I need

just two for the lower. I did tell them I wanted to be able tohave teeth that didn’t come out and I don’t have a lot of bonein either arch. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Jack J.

Dear Jack, there are several good questions here. I will tryand break them down and I encourage you and the readers toread my articles on Upgradeable Dentistry and AdvancedTreatment Planning under “publications” at:www.hamptondentalas sociates. com where I have writtenarticles about these very questions. I also outline in variouspublications the differences between removable overdenturesand fixed implant bridges and show examples of each type of implant treatment.

First of all, without a consultation and x-rays I cannotcomment on your specific situation. The number of implantsyou require is dependent upon the quality and quantity of your remaining bone, your budget and the type of prosthesisyou require. Whether the implant restoration should be“fixed” or non-removable by the patient or whether it isacceptable to remove the implant supported denture and takeit out at night is a personal decision and both have advantagesand disadvantages. Most people that lose their teeth want“fixed” teeth. In addition, the patient’s health, medication(s)and anatomy all play a role in deciding upon the ideal implantrestoration. It is important to note that sometimes we can startwith a removable implant denture due to budgetaryconstraints and add implants over a year or two and Upgradeto a fixed restoration or bridge when finances allow!

Next, we can discuss the number of required implants. Inthe upper arch most people have already been wearing adenture or partial and they have already undergone bone loss.As bone is lost in the upper jaw the sinuses expand and inorder to place implants in this area there is a need to “growthe bone” by doing a sinus grafting procedure and possibly ablock grafting procedure. This sinus augmentation is aprocedure that will allow implants of normal length to beplaced in the posterior upper jaw. A way to bypass this is azygomatic or long implant that is used in an “all-on-four”procedure. This procedure will place 4 implants at angles thatare used to support a full arch of denture teeth or a “hybrid”prosthesis. This may be a predictable procedure but replacing14 teeth (24 roots) with 4 implants doesn’t provide as large amargin of safety as using 7-9 implants per arch. This is amatter of philosophy and the treating implant dentist andsurgeon will be able to explain their philosophy based upon

their education, skill and judgment. As far as the two-implant option given to yo

lower arch, this is strictly to support a lower ovwhich is removable. In order to have a fixed (non-removable) you would require a minimmaxillary and 5 mandibular implants in my pracbeing said if you are able to place more implantsengineer the situation you are always better offextra implants will redistribute chewing forceimplants, instead of just four.

look forward to meeting you. You may see examdentistry at www.winterdental.com

    Board approves projects

The Germantown Village Boardapproved a Class B liquor license forBuzdum'sPub & Grill June 29.

The business is located at W188N10515 Maple Road. The approval fol-lowed a hearing before the board againstthe business, which owed property taxes tothe village.

Vincent Bobot, an attorney representingbusiness owner Radomir Buzdum, said hehas paid rent to the Collier's firm, which

serves as a receiver for the property. However, they have not paid the prop-

erty taxes. Bobot said Buzdum is up to dateon rent to Collier's.

"I've come to the conclusion that whatwe're going to have to do is litigate thatissue," Bobot said of the dispute between

Buzdum and Colliers.Bobot presented the board with a check

from Buzdum for $20,000, which he said is"just slightly under half" what is owed inproperty taxes through May.

"That's all the money he could come upwith," Bobot said of Buzdum. He added hewould likely start legal action againstCollier's next week. Later, Bobot said hewould likely appear before a judge on thematter within 45 to 60 days.

Bobot added that Buzdum is exploringpurchasing the property to resolve the mat-ter. He said his client is sandwiched"between two opposing forces" - the villagewhich is threatening to pull his liquor licenseover the delinquent property taxes and areceiver who has not taken the rent to pay

the taxes."Next year I hope to see this balance

(at) zero," Bobot said.Trustee Terri Kaminski said the $20,000

payment "does show good faith" and sheappreciates it.

"I'm comfortable with this," said of voting for the license renew

Trustees Jeff Hughes and Timvoted against the license renewal. —By Thomas J. McKillen , Managin

It is not uncommon for homes built in the1970s to have paneled walls. Paneling wasquite popular then, but not so much anymore. If you have paneling in your home, do notdespair. You can reinvent it with a little elbowgrease. Here are some ideas.

Paint is one of the easiest and most inex-

pensive ways to reinvent wood paneling. Youcan go with any color you want, and depend-ing upon the look you are after, you can fillthe grooves or leave them unfilled. If you arelooking to create stripes, for example, youmight want to leave the grooves as are anduse them as a guide to mark off the stripes. After a light sanding and cleaning, you willbe all ready to prime and paint.

If paint is not your thing, perhaps wallpa-

per is. Wallpaper comes in a variety of tex-ture and patterns. You can use almost anywallpaper you want, and the prep work isfairly easy. Just fill the grooves with joint com-pound, sand, clean and apply liner or sizingand the wallpaper.

Plaster is another option, but it will takesome time to do. There are many types avail-

able for novices. For the best results, youshould prime the paneling, attach the metallath and apply the plaster as recommended.Depending upon your needs, you can createa smooth, glossy finish or an ear thy, flat finish.

Love the look of your paneling? Keep itand give it an update with a new finish ornew trim. You can sand, stain and varnishsolid wood paneling just like you would anysolid wood furniture piece. You can even use

stencils and painter’s tape to create a pattern.Laminate wood paneling is a bit more diffi-cult, but can still be sanded and stained. Thestain may not penetrate evenly, however, soyou might want to experiment in a corner first. You can create any number of patterns onpaneling with molding. Just cut the trim, nail itto the paneling, putty the holes and paint or

stain the trim as you see fit.None of these ideas appeal to you?

Check online and at your local hardwarestore for further suggestions. And remember,if nothing appeals to you, you can alwaysremove the paneling. Just be aware that whatyou uncover may not be in the best of condi-tion. Installing new drywall can be time con-suming and costly.
