POLICE BLOTTER

Queen Mary troop ship from New York toEngland, with 16,000 soldiers on board.

“Some people slept in the empty swim-ming pool because there was no room andwe only received two meals per daybecause it took too long (to feed every-one),” Schulz shared. “Our whole waythere we zigged and zagged to avoid tor-pedoes.”

Once in Marlborough, England, Schulzsaid he and his comrades “took hikesthrough the villages every day and we visit-ed Stonehenge...we climbed around onthose rocks! You can’t do that now.”

After final training in England, the XXCorps landed on Utah Beach in Normandy,France, and when history’s most famous D-Day arrived, Schulz said he and the othermen knew full well what was happening.

“We were awakened by tremendousnoise and we looked outside to see hun-dreds of C-47s in the sky,” he said. “Wesaid, ‘Wow, this has to be D-Day,’ and itwas.”

Many years later when Schulz returnedto what he calls “hallowed ground,” he wasasked to lay a wreath in the Normandycemetery that is home to the graves of9,386 Americans.

“I was the only World War II veteranthere and they played the NationalAnthem; it was quite an honor,” saidSchulz.

His unit, attached to Gen. Patton’s ThirdArmy, left England 46 days after D-Day, onSchulz’s 21st birthday, and they spear-headed the drive across France, through

Germany and into Austria where they metthe Russian Army on V-E Day.

Schulz describes Patton as “a genius.”“He was a great guy, a military genius,”

said Schulz. “He got bad press and he hada foul mouth, but he was very smart. Hewas the one who saved the Battle of theBulge.”

It was just four weeks before the warended, on April 4, 1945, when Schulzwalked into what would affect him mostprofoundly as patrols of the 4th ArmoredDivision attached to the XX Corps discov-ered the first Nazi concentration camp atOhrdruf, Germany.

Having seen a concentration camp first-hand, Schulz is appalled when peoplequestion the Holocaust.

“There are people who don’t believe ithappened,” he said. “It did. I was there.”

Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, OmarBradley and Patton went to the camp to seethis gruesome discovery, and, Schulz said,“Patton wrote in his diary that night that hevomited. He said it was a horrible, horriblething.”

Eisenhower sent an order to allAmerican troops in the vicinity of Ohrdruf tovisit the scene because he wanted eyewit-nesses to the acts that were committed bythe Nazi regime.

“After discovering the camp, our mili-tary officers went into the town of Ohrdrufand had the citizens come see it as well, and they were shocked, said they had noidea this had been going on,” said Schulz.

Although 70 years in the past, Schulz’stime as an eyewitness to one of the most

significant turning points in global historyremains with him.

The story that best illustrates this is howhe managed to track down the daughter ofhis beloved Col. Griffith who was killed byGerman snipers after securing peace in theCharles Cathedral in France, thus savingthe building from destruction.

“I thought, ‘Well, what is the Internetfor?’ and I looked him up,” said Schulz, whodiscovered the late colonel had a now-82-year-old daughter, Alice, living nJacksonville, Fla. “We went and visited her.”

When Schulz visited the colonel’s gravein 1994, he said he had the chance tomourn the loss of a “father figure.”

“I was with him every day for 18months,” said Schulz of the man who on the51st anniversary of his death was honoredin France with a Distinguished ServiceCross and Silver Star. “It was a very sadday when we lost him.”

Schulz was awarded the Bronze StarMedal and discharged on Dec. 1, 1945,and he went on to live a whole new lifetime

of experiences. He enrolled at theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison where heearned his Bachelor’s and Master’sdegrees in Business Administration. There,Schulz met his wife, Eleanore, and theywere married in 1949. Schulz worked as aninvestment research officer at theNorthwestern Mutual Life InsuranceCompany in Milwaukee for 36 years. TheSchulzes, retired since 1988, live inMilwaukee. They have five sons and 16grandchildren.

Schulz’s candor is not something heenvisioned for himself as he spent decadeskeeping his wartime stories close to his vestas is typical for veterans of that era.

“As so many folks have told me, theirfamily members who served in World WarII never talked about it, and that was truefor me, too,” he said. “My children were intheir 40s and 50s before I finally talked tothem about it. Now I speak to elementaryschools, high school classes and collegegroups and I let them know what really hap-pened.”

The Germantown School District planson updating all the titles to its propertiesunder a motion that was approved theSchool Board last month.

The board approved a motion at itsOct. 13 meeting to authorize district staffto hire a firm to perform survey calculationsand title searches on all district property.

Director of Business and AuxiliaryServices Ric Ericksen said the request isbeing made to update district records withMacArthur Elementary School and district-owned land on Holy Hill as priorities.

Ericksen said some of the work hasalready begun.

The request followed an approval tosell a portion of land in front of the districtadministrative office on Donges Bay Roadto the state Department of Transportation(DOT) for just over $3,000.

Ericksen noted that he received infor-mation from the DOT on the Donges Bayproperty that included information thatwent as far back as 1958.

Board President Robert Soderberg saidthe updated information would comple-ment the district facilities study.

District Administrator Jeff Holmes said“it’s due” for the district to examine howtitles to its properties are stated.

“We need to do some due diligenceahead of the board diving off into the facil-ities study and making sure we’ve coveredall the bases for you in that regard,”Holmes said.

Ericksen added that if the district wereto sell any property, title research wouldhave to be done anyway.

By Sam EricksonVeterans Day has taken on a new meaning

for many Americans since September 11 andthe beginning of the conflicts in Iraq andAfghanistan. Only a few years ago, manyAmericans did not know an individual who hadbeen in active combat duty in the last 20 years. After the Vietnam War, the military becamemuch less valued and much less popular in themainstream culture, but, today, all veterans arehonored for their service on Veterans Day.

The first Armistice Day celebration tookplace in 1919 and marked the first anniversaryof the Armistice. Thirty states made it a legal hol-iday and President Woodrow Wilson led the fes-tivities. Armistice Day was made a federal holi-day in 1938, making it one of the most recentholidays in America. The name was officiallychanged to Veterans Day with legislation pro-posed in 1953.

Unlike religious and secular holidays likeChristmas and Thanksgiving, there are very fewofficial celebrations of Veterans Day in America, although this too is rapidly changing as moreveterans return from Iraq and Afghanistan. If youare interested in establishing your own tradi-tions, there are many things you can do. Mostcities will have some memorial for soldiers lost inwar, and laying flowers or remembering soldiersthat you have known is a good option. Whilethere are active service men and women in thefield, you might consider sending a care pack-age or just a thank-you card to a soldier. Youcan even discuss the history of the holiday and

American military involvement with your chil-dren.

Most holidays in the United States havebeen moved to Mondays to create a longweekend. The same was done for VeteransDay, but veterans groups protested and it wasmoved back to the traditional date ofNovember 11. Most groups thought it wouldraise the profile of the holiday, but it has, in fact, had the opposite effect. While more people areobserving the holiday in recent years, most busi-nesses do not close for the day. Only govern-ment offices and banks are closed. Official cer-emonies center on the Tomb of the Unknowns inArlington National Cemetery in Washington,D.C. A color guard from all branches of the mil-itary patrols the site through the night, a presi-dential wreath is laid and Taps is played overthe grave.

Veterans Day is both a state and a federalholiday in all states. It coincides with interna-tional celebrations of Armistice Day andRemembrance Day in other parts of the world. The holiday is observed on November 11because major hostilities in World War I wereended formally at 11 a.m. on the 11th day ofNovember, the 11th month, in 1918 whenGermany signed the Armistice at the VersaillesPalace in Paris. Veterans Day has a differentfocus than Memorial Day, as Veterans Day isintended to honor and thank the living veteransin the United States for their service and toacknowledge their contributions to Americansociety.

As part of their Mobilizing Communitiesbusiness model, United Way of WashingtonCounty is initiating a new community invest-ment prioritization process. For 2016,United Way will provide sustained annualfunding for programs that impact communi-ty health, with a focus on access to healthcare, healthy beginnings, and healthychoices. Special consideration will be givento coalitions, and programs that impactalcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) ormental health.

Over the last two years, United Way ofWashington County has expanded beyondsimple fund allocation. Their MobilizingCommunities business model is a strategyfor creating impactful, lasting change by

identifying and addressing the underlyingcauses of critical community needs. Eachyear, United Way will accept new applica-tions for funding under one of their threeimpact pillars–Education, Income, orHealth.

Health was selected as the first pillar forfunding due to strong responses from com-munity conversations and the overwhelmingevidence of need.

“Health is the one thing that is importantto everyone–it’s the foundation for successin life,” said Kristin Brandner, ExecutiveDirector of United Way of WashingtonCounty. “We want to leverage strategicpartnerships and resources so that individu-als are empowered to take control of their

health and live fuller, more vibrant lives.”Applications for health impact funding

must be outcomes-driven and evidence-based. The deadline is March 31, 2015. Toobtain information about United Way, theapplication process, and requirements, goto www.UnitedWayOfWashingtonCounty.org.

United Way is offering two training ses-sions to help agencies create strong appli-cations. The first training, “OutcomesBasics” will be held on November 18 atUniversity of Wisconsin WashingtonCounty. The event will help participantsunderstand how to effectively measure andcommunicate the impact of their programs. These training sessions are free to anyone

interested in strengthening their grant-writ-ing skills. To register, visit www.UnitedWayOfWashingtonCounty. org.

Cedarburg avenged a loss toGermantown earlier in the season by beat-ing the Warhawks on the road 42-21, Oct.31, in the Division 2 Level 2 Playoffs atDatka Stadium.

Cedarburg (9-2) used a 1-2 rushingattack that ran for a combined total of 414yards and scored all their touchdowns.Germantown couldn’t stop senior JonathanStiever with their run defense. He ran for279 yards on 26 carries and four touch-downs while senior Alex Shebesta rushed24 times for 135 yards and two touch-downs.

“(Cedarburg) executed what they dowell,” Germantown coach Jake Davis said.“We knew what it was. It came down to thelittle details. We had to execute (ouroffense). They did that.”

The scoring began for the Bulldogs inthe first quarter with 4 minutes 46 secondsleft on a 5-yard touchdown run by Shebestathat ended a nine-play drive that covered73 yards to take a 7-0 lead. Cedarburgadded another score late in the quarterwith Stiever’s 15-yard run to take a 14-0advantage entering the second quarter.

Cedarburg scored in the second quar-ter with 8:19 remaining in the half onStiever’s second touchdown from 1-yardthat gave the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead. TheWarhawks responded with a 16-play, 58-yard drive that took 5:19 off the clock whensenior quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn Jr.crossed the end zone from 1-yard out with

3:00 left to trail 21-7 at the half. The Bulldogs kept pounding the ball on

the ground in the second half andGermantown couldn’t stop it. Shebesta gothis second and final touchdown of thegame on a 15-yard run with 8:35 in thethird quarter to increase their lead to 28-7.The Warhawks struck back on a 12-yardtouchdown from Lawton to 6-foot-4 seniorreceiver Steve Doran, who had a 3-inchadvantage over Cedarburg junior defen-sive back Matt Hokanson with 4:42 in thethird. A 70-yard run by Stiever late in thequarter silenced the crowd to lead 35-14going into the final quarter. Both teamsscored a touchdown each in the fourthquarter. Stiever’s 37-yard touchdown washis fourth of the game. Senior tight endCole Karcz caught a 16-yard touchdownpass from Lawhorn to complete the scoring.

It was a sad ending for the Warhawks, but it didn’t dampen what they accom-plished during the season.

“Our seniors are a great group of kids, and that’s what I want them to understand,”Davis said, “was the hard work that theyput in and all the things that they accom-plished this season aren’t gone because ofthis game. They are an outstanding groupof young men and I’m going to really missthem. That’s the hardest part about all ofthis.”

Lawhorn had a bad day, completingnine of 22 passes for 97 yards. Junior run-ning back Pethan Spencer ran 15 times for57 yards for Germantown. Cedarburg ledGermantown in total yards 503-206. TheWarhawks finished their season at 9-2.

A three-year run of state tournamentappearances by the Germantown boys vol-leyball team was snapped Nov. 4, asGermantown was upset by Hartland

Arrowhead in a sectional semifinal 21-25,24-26, 25-15, 20-25.

“We knew we had to start fast,”Germantown Coach Brian Rushmer said.Rushmer noted that Germantown facedArrowhead in the sectional level the past twoyears. “They (Arrowhead) came to play. We

couldn’t do it for once.”In the first game, Arrowhead took a 6-3

lead and never let Germantown get closerthan two points. In the second game,Germantown held a 24-23 lead after anArrowhead serve went into the net. ButArrowhead answered with a kill for the nextpoint and closed the match on a tip volley.

Germantown got its one victory of theevening in the third game, scoring sevenstraight points to open up a 13-5 lead.

“We finally loosened up,” Rushmer said.“The guys were so unbelievably tense.”

Germantown held the lead for most ofthe fourth game but an ace by Arrowhead’sMichael Pepitone tied the score at 16-16.Arrowhead scored two more points beforeGermantown rallied to make the score 20-21in favor of Arrowhead following a block byGermantown’s Thomas Schnoor. ButArrowhead called a time out and thenscored the next two points, forcing aGermantown time out. Arrowhead thenclosed the match with the final two points.

Ben Walter led Germantown with 17 killswhile Logan Reindl had 48 assists. BlakeJanz — a transfer from Hartford who wascleared to play two weeks ago after tearingan ACL in spring — had 12 digs.

For Arrowhead Coach Shane Reid, thesectional win against Germantown was threeyears in the making.

“These guys worked their tails off everyday, it is remarkable,” Reid said.

Reid said getting the first game win was“infinitely important for us” and it may haveshocked Germantown.

“Whatever it has to be — whether we’regoing to take somebody by surprise or justgrind one out, I think we did all of it today,”Reid said.

The loss concludes the career of five sen-iors who were part of the three-year statetournament run for Germantown.

“We thought we had the pieces to do itagain, we just fell a little short,” Rushmersaid. “Only one team gets to end on a win,and it wasn’t us.”

By Tresa EricksonHome offices set up in a spare room make

great workspaces. You can get a lot done frompaying bills to filing paperwork to conductingonline research. Add a sofa and a TV, and youalso have a great space to relax. Unfortunately, not everyone has a spare room for a homeoffice. If you don’t, do not despair. You can stillcreate a home office in a much smaller space inyour home.

Almost any under-utilized space in yourhome will work for a home office. Here aresome of the more common spaces homeownershave set up home office.

Attics or BasementsTake a look at your attic or basement. See

any place you could set up a home office? If itis not finished and has issues with water, tem-perature fluctuation and more, your attic orbasement might not be a suitable place for ahome office, especially one with a computerand other electronics. If it doesn’t have anyissues, your attic or basement might be ideal.Just choose the best part, perhaps under a win-dow, move in some furniture, set up somescreens and make it a private space to work.

ClosetsTake a look at the closets in your home.

Spot one you could do without? Convert it to ahome office. Clean it out and either set up adesk inside it or build one. Attach some 2x4s tothe sides of the closet walls, set some shelves ontop, and you’re ready to go. You can use thelowest shelf as a desk surface and the onesabove for books and other office items. You canremove the closet doors or leave them be. Thatway, you can shut away your office and yourmess whenever you wish.

CornersTake a look around your home. See a neg-

lected corner? Turn it into a home office with adesk, chair, file cabinet and whatever else youhave space for. You can set up a home office inthe corner of almost any room from the kitchen toyour bedroom.

EntrywaysTake a look at your entryway. Could it serve

the dual purpose of welcoming guests and doingpaperwork? Move over that hall tree, slide in a

desk, and you’ve got a place to work, a placefor someone to sit and a place for guests to hangtheir coats.

HallwaysTake a look at the hallways in your home.

Have one that is rather wide or extra long? Tucka home office into it. All you need is a bit ofspace for a small desk and chair. If there is anook in your hallway, you might be able to builda desk into it.

Sofa BacksTake a look at your sofa. Could you use a

table behind it? Desks make great sofa tables.Rearrange the room, pull the sofa to the middleand add a small desk behind it to serve as botha sofa table and a home office.

Stair LandingsTake a look at your stair landing. Wouldn’t it

make a great home office? Depending uponhow large the space is, you might be able tohave an easy chair for reading.

Home offices do not have to be large. Youcan set one up almost anywhere in your home.Look for under-utilized spaces, like nooks andcrannies, then make the best use of the space tocreate the home office you’ve always wantedbut never had the room for.
