HUNTERS PROTECT YOUR HEARING

DURING HUNTING SEASON!People who use firearms are more likely to develop hearing loss than those who do

not. Firearm users tend to have high-frequency permanent hearing loss, which meansthat they may have trouble hearing speech sounds like "s," "th," or "v" and other high-pitched sounds.

The good news is that people can prevent hearing loss by using appropriate hearing protective devices (HPDs), such as earmuffs or earplugs. However, studies have shown that only about half of shooters wear hearing protection all the time when shooting. Hunters

are even less likely to wear hearing protection because they say they cannot hear approaching game or other noises. Call us today to schedule your free appointment so wecan help you choose the type of hearing protection that is right for you.

 T IPS T O PROTECT  Y OUR HEARING

• Always use some type of hearing protection any time you fire a gun.• Always have disposable HPDs handy—make them part of your gear.• Double-protect your ears, like putting muffs over plugs, when shooting big-bore firearms.• Choose smaller caliber firearms for shooting and hunting.• Choose single-shot firearms instead of lever action, pump, or semi-automatic guns.• Avoid shooting in groups or in reverberant environments.• Use electronic or nonlinear HPDs for hunting.

By Tresa EricksonWhen a large home improvement project

looms, like adding a deck or updating yourkitchen or bathroom, it can be overwhelming. As you write out the supply list, you may findyourself thinking of all the other things youwould rather be doing. If you aren't careful, those thoughts can take over and the projectmoved to the back burner. To avoid this sce-nario, it may be helpful to look at the projectas a series of stages.

Say you're updating your kitchen. If youthink about everything you have to do from thesanding to the painting to the lighting, you are

sure to get overwhelmed and put the kiboshon the whole thing. If, however, you take thetime to sit down and stage out the process, youare more likely to proceed with it. So, sit downand make a list of all the tasks that need to bedone. Do you plan to change out the lighting?Write that down. Do you plan to paint thewalls and cabinets? Write that down. Do youplan to replace the trim? Write that down. Doyou plan to add a backsplash? Write thatdown. Do you plan to change out the counter-tops? Write that down. Keep going until youhave every task listed.

Now, take that list and determine whattasks should occur first. Painting, for example, should probably come before the new trim, lighting, backsplash and countertops. Thatway, you won't have to worry about spillingpaint on any of the new items. Once every-

thing is painted, you might want to tackle thetrim-your walls and cabinets will then be com-plete. Next up should be the countertops.Once they're in, you can install the backsplashand the under-the-cabinet lighting.

Still feeling overwhelmed? Not to worry.Get out your calendar and schedule each ofthe tasks, giving yourself plenty of time to com-plete each. Don't try to paint everything all inone day. It won't happen. Give yourself aweekend to prep and paint the walls and anextra long weekend to tackle the cabinets.Work on one section of the cabinets at time.Do the lower cabinet bases one day, theupper cabinet bases the next and the cabinetdoors the day after that. Wrap everything upon the final day with the installation of thedoors and new hardware and whatevertouchups may be needed.

Once you have the tasks scheduled, youcan start gathering the supplies and preparingfor the work ahead. It is important that youhave everything you need to complete eachtask. Multiple trips to the store will slowprogress considerably. It is also important thatyou commit to the schedule and do your bestto stick to it. Veer off too many times or try to

do too much at once, and you may never getback on track again. You don't want to spendthe next five years of your life working on yourkitchen, or worse, stop work altogether andend up with a half-finished kitchen.

Motivation, of course, is half the battle. Ifwalls getting painted and new lighting goingup is not enough to keep you on track, don'thesitate to try something else. Have somefriends over to ooh and ah over what you havecompleted and cheer you on to the nextstages, or treat yourself to a movie or dinnerfor each task you complete. Do whatever is

needed to stay motivated. The more progressyou make, the more disciplined you willbecome and the closer you will get to thekitchen you envisioned.

Attacking large home improvement proj-ects in stages can make quick work of them.Give it a shot. You just might get the projectdone and be free for other pursuits.

With the implementation of theAffordable Care Act, commonly labeled"Obamacare," on the horizon, scammers arefinding it to be the latest opportunity to stealpeople’s identities.

"Consumers nationwide are reporting that

scammers are calling, claiming they are eligi-ble for health insurance cards, and asking forpersonal information," said Ran Hoth,CEO/president of the Better Business Bureauof Wisconsin. "The BBB advises consumers toignore these calls. Providing this informationto unknown persons is dangerous and putsyou at risk for identity theft."

The scams work like this: You receive acall from someone claiming to be from thefederal government. The scammer says that

you have been selected to be part o f a groupof Americans to receive insurance cards. Butbefore the card can be mailed, your bankaccount and social security numbers arerequired. Once they get this information, theycan sell it or use it to access your accounts.

"Affordable Care Act scammers are ableto make consumers think that their calls arelegitimate, especially with such a hot topiclike Obamacare," Hoth explained."Consumers need to realize that the govern-ment rarely calls individuals. If you receivethis type of call, hang up."

The BBB offers the following tips to peo-ple who experience the affordable health-care scams:

o Hang up the phone. If you get one of

these calls, just hang up. You may be tempt-ed to call back, but this will only give thescammer another opportunity to steal yourinformation. Also, be sure not to press anybuttons that the scammer instructs.

o Never give out personal information.

Never give out your bank account numbers, date of birth, credit card number or socialsecurity number.

o Don’t rely on caller ID. Some scammersare able to display a company’s name orphone number on the caller ID screen. Don’ttrust that the information you see is true.

o The government rarely communicatesvia phone calls. Most of the time, the govern-ment uses traditional snail mail to communi-cate to consumers. The government rarelycalls, emails or texts, so don’t give your infor-mation to these types of messages.

Unemployed workers could learn newskills to improve their chances to land anew job under as part of a new jobs pack-age. On Wednesday, Governor Walkeroutlined his Workforce DevelopmentInitiatives to help continue job growth inthe state. A key portion of that plan, authored by State Representative ThomasWeatherston (R-Caledonia) and StateSenator Alberta Darling (R-River Hills), willreplicate the Transitional Jobs Program inan area with high unemployment.

Representative Weatherston said the billwill help unemployed workers get back ontheir feet.

"The transitional jobs program isn't ahand-out, it's a hand-up," Weatherstonsaid, "It gives workers a chance to learnnew skills and increase their chances toland a new job. It's an investment in theirfuture."

The bill is based on the Transitional Jobs Demonstration Project, a bi-partisanplan aimed at the city of Milwaukee to

provide low-income adults with an imme-diate income and an opportunity to learnnew skills. Employers are able to trainworkers and can hire the workers full-timewhen their training period is over. FromSeptember 2010 to June 2013, 4,074workers participated in the program.Senator Darling says the bill is a low-riskopportunity to find and train workers forjobs they need filled.

"I often hear from employers that jobseekers don't have the skills they need,"

Darling said, "I applaud Governor Walkerfor including an expansion of the transi-tional jobs program. It's a proven way tohelp employers train someone for the jobsthat are available. This is a win-win foreveryone involved."

The Transitional Jobs DemonstrationProject ended in June of this year. Due toits success, the program was replaced inthe state budget with the TransformMilwaukee Jobs program.

Richfield residents Austin and EvanClemens are back at work and school this fallafter a summer that saw both put in stellar per-

formances on the Mountain Dew ATVMotocross National Championship tour.

Austin, 19, won the title in the Open BDivision, winning races in Unadilla, NY; SteelCity, Penn., and Hurricane Mills, Tenn. AustinClemens, a 2012 Hartford Union High School(HUHS) graduate, is a full-time student atMoraine Park Technical College and works atNeu's Building Supply in Menomonee Falls.

Evan Clemens, 16, a senior at HUHS,placed third in the Open C Division, winningraces in Georgia and Kentucky. He alsoplaced sixth in the Production C class, winninga race in Muddy Creek, TN. Open B, Open Cand Production C are t hree of several amateurclasses on the national tour.

During a recent interview, Austin said hehas been racing on the ATV circuit for approx-imately five years after first seeing friends run-ning in national events. His first race was inAugust 2008 "and I've loved it ever since."

The Loretta Lynn's race was his third win ofthe season in what was the series final. Austinsaid he was excited at the final result.

"It was a beautiful kind of experience. There was so much joy for what I had workedfor this year," he said.

As for the future, Austin said he plans to

race "as long as my body will take it."For Evan Clemens, it was his third full sea-

son on the tour. Evan said that he and his

brother started at the local level before goingto the national level.

According to Evan, he was essentiallylearning his first year on the tour in which hetried to pace himself with the other riders. Astrong finish at a race in Ohio in 2012 showedhe was getting better. That set the s tage for thisyear, which included several top five finishes inaddition to the three victories.

Evan indicated that the appeal of the sportin partially due to the people who he meets atthe track.

"It's a lot of fun and the people at thetracks are really nice," he said.

He said that the data on studentachievement planning, a facilities study andstaff input are being used to set priorities anddevelop district plans.

"At this juncture I cannot take credit for anyof your successes. However, I view my upcom-

ing role as your new superintendent to be thatof facilitator, and that it hopefully leads togreater success for the district," Holmes said."My personal goal is that (the) GermantownSchool District becomes a role model for a sen-sible and modern education system that pro-motes resilience, strong work ethic and per-sonal success for all students and t heir familiesin whatever academic pursuits they so choose

within our system."Holmes asked residents "to continue to

support education in a positive manner to thebest of their ability, while I submit to the publicthat the district is doing what we can to thebest of our ability with the resources we haveavailable."

Soderberg also cited the recent statereport for the district, the district ACT scoresand participation. Soderberg also noted that75 percent of high school students participate

in extracurricular activities and thatGermantown was ranked the the sixth besthigh school in the state by US News & Worldreport.

"Germantown continues to be a school dis-trict of choice that is a leader academically inthe region, state and nation," Soderberg said.

He also noted the district is financially

sound and school taxes have decreased forthe third year in a row while the district contin-ues to maintain a "healthy" fund balance.Soderberg said the School Board has setgoals to enhance district effectiveness. Hementioned the board's concern about classsizes, which resulted in two new teachersbeing hired at County Line Elementary School.

Both Holmes and Soderberg raised con-cerns about the current facilities. Holmes saida facilities plan is being undertaken to priori-

tize needs."Although not glamorous, facilities mainte-

nance is a key ingredient in maintaining excel-lent programs for our students and serving ourtaxpayers well by maintaining their property inan appropriate manner," Holmes said. "As aresult of economic conditions, the district wasforced to be reactive in an effort to maintain

the building and grounds with the vast majori-ty of any major improvement projects only tak-ing place as funds became available."

Soderberg was more direct in his assess-ment of district facilities.

"Our buildings are getting old and (theyare) maintained as the best we can," he said.He noted that in a few schools, students arebeing educated in hallways due to lack ofspace.

Soderberg mentioned the facilities study

that is underway and said "we can do better."District levy approvedSchool District voters approved a tax levy

of $29,130,924 later during the meeting.Voters also approved a $1,000 increase in

the salaries of School Board members, with themotion being made by resident Jill North. Allboard members will be paid $5,000. Several

Menomonee Falls Foundation, which is a commu-nity foundation focused on providing grants tonon-profit organizations that serve theMenomonee Falls area. The Menomonee Falls

Historical Society, Menomonee Falls Food Pantry,Children’s Community Center and Camp PowWow have been past recipients of grants from theGreater Menomonee Falls Foundation, accordingto foundation chair Darci Middaugh.

Middaugh explained that the GreaterMenomonee Falls Foundation transforms donors’dreams and desires into reality by providing aneffective means for investing in the communitymeeting needs now and in the future.

She explained that the organization’s mainroles in the community are building endowments, reviewing grant applications, and making grantsto qualified nonprofit organizations which benefitthe Menomonee Falls area.

Middaugh emphasized that non-profits thatreceive grants from the foundation have to demon-strate that they benefit the Menomonee Falls area.

The Taste of Menomonee Falls event will raisefunds so the foundations can continue to awardgrants to the non-profit organizations. Last year, the foundation provided approximately $9,000 ingrants to various organizations.

Middaugh said that benefits of the foundationare that they do the background work as far asmaking sure the organizations that receive grantsare non-profits.

The trivia contest is open to teams of six peo-ple at a total cost of $180. Individuals are alsowelcome at a cost of $30.

The 31st annual “A CommunityAffair”–an arts and crafts, collectibles andantiques show run by Menomonee Falls serv-ice organization Community League–will be

held Saturday, Oct. 19.The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30

p.m. at Menomonee Falls High School,W142 N8101 Merrimac Drive, in

Menomonee Falls.The fair–which will include over 100

juried exhibitors, an antique appraiser, cash

In the past 30 years, from the craft fair’s

proceeds, the Community League has givenover $800,000 for various civic and charita-ble causes, and the event gets better everyyear, organizers say.

“The ‘A Community Affair’ team has put incountless hours and generated numerousideas for celebrating the 31st year of ourmajor fund raiser,” stated chairpersons JaneFord and Kay Weber in a press release. “Thecommunity is invited to participate in ourongoing efforts to better the lives of those wehelp with our donations.”

For the special day, the high school’s new

gymnasium and remodeledcafeteria–renamed “Market Square” for theevent–will be charmingly transformed withflowers, drapes and a white picket fence. Allexhibits will be all on one level for the shop-per’s convenience. (No strollers permitted.)

As a highlight of the fair, Barbara Eashwill be giving verbal appraisals, for $3 each,of all antiques except stamps and coins.Interested persons may bring in the actualitems or a photograph between 9 a.m. and 2p.m.

The many exhibits will include pottery;

clothing; fiber art; Christmas ornaments; petportraits; seasonal items; doll clothing; jewel-ry; garden art; and purses. Also, free mas-sages from Rivercrest Chiropractic will beoffered and shoppers can enjoy originalpiano music by Kerri Sherwood of Kenosha.

“The event will showcase exciting manynew exhibitors, as well as the return of manyfavorites from all over the Midwest,” said Jeanne M. Ver bsky, Publi city Chair.

Then there will be the food.Known for their cooking, Community

League members will use their own recipes

for this year’s cafe menu. Food items willinclude Swiss cream soup, hot beef sand-wiches, chicken salad and homemade

sweets. For a quick snack, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos supreme, tacos, cookies, fruit, muffinsand bagels will be available at the snackbar.

The“Pastries ‘N More” bake sale areawill have fresh-baked pies, cakes, quickbreads, decorated cookies, bars, homemadejams and jellies and handmade candies andother treats.

The raffle and silent auction areas arealso a crowd favorite, said Verbsky.

“There are some really outstandingitems,” Verbsky noted. “A chance at thesebaskets is a huge draw at the show.”

The prizes for this year’s raffle are $500,$250 and a $100 gas card. Tickets are $2each, three for $5, or six for $10.

Attendees can enjoy browsing and bid-ding on unique silent auction items in theMarket Square area. This year the buck-ets/baskets are located in the silent auctionarea and they are based on various themes, such as “All Things Disney” with four one-dayhopper passes for the Disney World themeparks; “Casino Night” with a gift card for arestaurant at Potawatomi Casino; “NightAway” featuring a one night stay at the HyattRegency in Milwaukee; a wine and cheesebasket with Von Staehl wine and Widmercheeses, and also Morning Star golf, sports

and kids packages and a Christmas basket.Bidding will take place from the opening ofthe show until 3 p.m.

Cursive writing is still part of instruction inthe Germantown School District.

Brenda O’Brien, district director of teach-ing and learning, said students learn their cur-sive writing “license” in third grade when they

have learned the formation of all letters.O’Brien indicated the “license” allows studentsthe opportunity to write in cursive at any time.

The future of cursive writing has beenraised in other districts. During a Sept. 6Hamilton School Board meeting, SchoolBoard President Gabe Kolesari askedSupervisor of Instructional Services KatherineR. Little if the district still taught cursive writing.

“Yes we do, we teach cursive,” Littlereplied.

Kolesari predicted that within the next 10years there will be people who will go to seethe Declaration of Independence in

Washington, D.C. but will not be able to read

it because it is in cursive.“I see that already from kids. They think it’s

a foreign language,” Kolesari said. “Are wedoing something wrong?”

“I don’t think so. Our society has just

moved away from it. We continue to teach it,”Hamilton Superintendent Kathleen Cookesaid.

Kolesari said he has been asked about cur-sive writing by others whose children weren’table to read cursive writing in personal letters.

“The dilemma is how often do kids use itbecause most written documents now theyhave to turn in are required to be (printedreports),” Kathleen Cooke said.

The issue of cursive writing instruction isalso being discussed at the committee level inthe West Bend School District.

An adjustment to the fire safety programming isjust one of the changes underway at theMenomonee Falls Fire Department.

While Menomonee Falls will not be holding themain Fire Safety Fair this fall as it has in past years,

the village’s fire stations scheduled an openhouse–featuring various activities–on differentSaturdays through September and into October.(The final open house will take place Saturday, Oct.5 at Fire Station #1, N88 W16631 Appleton Ave.)

Anna Ruzinski, director of protective servicesand Menomonee Falls Police Chief, explained thatthe department decided to pull back for this year onthe major event in light of other ongoing changeswithin the department.

Menomonee Falls is currently looking for a newfire chief after Jeffrey Hevey for a position in Texasthis summer. In addition, the department undergo-ing a reorganization and is proceeding with theconstruction of two new stations over the next few

years. Menomonee Falls is also in discussions withthe village of Lannon regarding the consolidation offire services. If current discussions continue, it is pos-sible that both communities could come to an agree-ment with a form of consolidated operations startingin 2014.

For the fire safety open houses this year,Ruzinski said each station has offered somethingslightly different while giving residents severalopportunities to attend fire safety events during themonth. Ruzinski said the village is considering howfuture fire safety programs will be organized.

With a theme of "Prevent Kitchen Fires,” this year’s Fire PreventionWeek will aim to educate the public on the most common origin of ahouse fire–the kitchen–and offer tips on how to keep cooking flare-upsfrom happening in the first place.

“This is one of the biggest causes of home fires,” said John Delain, public education coordinator for the Germantown Fire Department. “Werespond to quite a few of these–stove fires, kitchen fires–every year.”

Along with emphasizing this year’s theme, local off icials will be pro-moting the goal of increased general fire safety among the public–a mis-sion that has been a top National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) pri-ority since 1922.

Established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire–which beganOct. 8, 1871 and continued into the next day when it did the majority of its damage–Fire Prevention Week is observed on the Sunday throughSaturday period in which Oct. 9 falls.

Area residents will have an opportunity to learn fire safety lessons ina fun way as Fire Prevention Week events take place throughout the coun-ty at public safety departments and schools.

One community favorite–the Germantown Fire Department’s annualFire Safety Fair–will take place Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30p.m. at Fire Station #2, N115 W18752 Edison Drive.

The fair will include a variety of children’s and family activities,

including a Sparky Bounce House, a display of fire tr ucks and the SurviveAlive House, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Most importantly, attendees will have access to fire safety informa-tion and get to participate in realistic kitchen fire situations.

“Through hands-on demonstrations, we will teach people things likehow to extinguish a grease fire or use a cover to st op the fire from spread-ing,” Delain explained, noting that the department will have a stove setup at the fair.

The event–which typically draws around 1,000 area residents–willalso feature a child identification station set up by the village policedepartment and booths run by area health care professionals.

“There will be a lot of great educational tools available,” said

Delain. “People will be able to see what their local firefighters do andhow they do it, and just learn more about safety in general.”

Germantown Fire Department For anyone who has ever thought about becoming apaid-on-call firefighter, the Germantown Fire Department isoffering that opportunity.

The Fire Department is seeking paid-on-call staff. The staff respond to situations on an as-needed basis. They are paidwhen on a call or undergoing training. Paid-on-call staff arerequired to reside within six miles of one of the Germantown firestations. Paid-on-call staff need to be in the community for specific hours.

The department is seeking paid-on-call staff for bothfirefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) positions.

Information about paid-on-call positions will be availableduring the Germantown Fire Safety Fair Oct. 5 from 10:30 a.m.to 3:30 p.m. at Fire Station #2, N115 W18752 Edison Drive.

When we responded to Steve’s “your home

sold in 120 days or I buy it” ad, we thought

it was a gimmick & frankly we were

skeptical! Well when Steve actually boughtour Buyer’s home so they could buy ours,

our skepticism obviously changed. We

thank Steve for his innovative ideas & can

attest to the fact that they really work!
