PET OF THE WEEKHi, my name is Taco. I'm an incredibly sweetboy who was transferred from Vilas CountyHumane Society due to lack of space. Myfamily surrendered me to Vilas Countybecause I would wander off when the kidsforgot to close the gate to the yard. I never meant to run away, mynose just took me on great adventures! To keep me safe my newfamily should keep me on leash, a secure fenced in yard, or on aleash while I explore the outdoors. I love to be with my people andcrave a good snuggle on my owner's lap. I am very tolerant andgentle and would do well in a home with children of all ages, otherdogs and even cats. When you come to visit me at the shelter I willbe so excited to see you that I can barely contain myself and youmay hear we whining for you to pay attention to me. Once I'm outof my kennel, I will melt your heart with a hug and a kiss!

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by mydentist to have laser surgery to fix my gumdisease. Can you comment on whether this issafe and if it is better than the deep cleanings Ihave been getting for years?

Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsedlaser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2laser is the most widely studied laser on themarket today with the most Universitysupported articles outlining their safety andeffectiveness. I can tell you that lasers arewonderful tools in dentistry if they are usedcorrectly. The ADA Council on ScientificAffairs has recently published a position paperon lasers and how they are used in dentistry. Some of the salient points of their paper are asfollows:

“There are currently more than twentycleared indications for use for dental lasers inthe United States.

According to the ADA position paper: “Thedental literature indicates that when “lasers” areused as an adjunct to meticulous root planing, mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., theintentional removal of the epithelial lining ofthe sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefitbeyond scaling and root planing alone withrespect to gain of the periodontal attachment.

Additional clinical data from properlydesigned clinical trials with adequate samplesizes are still required before it can be known towhat extent LANAP (Laser assisted newattachment procedures) are safe and effectiveacross the spectrum of patients with chronicperiodontitis.”

So while lasers can be used for removinglesions, performing frenectemies (removingtissue that holds tongues or lips down) andmany other soft tissue applications it has notbeen found to definitively treat gum disease. Ifour readers wish to be seen for evaluation of

soft tissue problems, melanin pigmentremoval, frenectemies or evaluation andtreatment of gum problems we invite them tocall us for an examination at 414-464-9021.

• 30.09 percent (412 responses)indicated that they supported havingexisting undeveloped farmland andother agricultural land be allowed tobe developed in a way "that preservesthe rural character."

• 45.85 percent (613 responses) ofresidents indicated that more conser-vation subdivisions should be allowed

to developed. On a question asking respondents

Fans attending the Germantown-Port Washingtongame Oct. 9 got to see three games in one, withGermantown rallying from a third-quarter deficit towin 46-28.

"Those kids came to play, they were ready to go,"Germantown Coach Jake Davis said of PortWashington. The game was the last home game for thePirates seniors. "Hats off to them, they did a nice jobon their senior night."

The game started out as a defensive struggle, withGermantown's opening drive being stopped and theWarhawk's first points coming on 26-yard field goal byJack Brzkala at the 8 minute mark. Special teams gotGermantown's first touchdown, as a Port Washingtonpunt was blocked and returned 18-yards for a touch-down by Riley Dorsey with 3:11 left in the first quar-ter.

Those were Germantown's only points in the firsthalf, as the Warhawks were held scoreless in the sec-ond quarter while the Pirates got on the board at the10:19 mark of the on an 8-yard run by GraemeBiskobing.

Arena football broke out in the third quarter, asboth teams combined for five touchdowns. The Piratesfirst drive of the second half ended with a 15-yard runby Matt Ruppel, giving the Pirates a 14-10 lead afterthe extra point was converted. Germantown respond-ed as Nate Seymour and Brad Zachowski connected ona 60-yard pass play at the 10:01 mark, withGermantown taking a 21-17 lead after the extra pointconversion.

That lead barely lasted two minutes, as PortWashington scored on a 45-yard run by Ruppel, givingthe Pirates a 21-17 lead with 7:54 left in the thirdquarter.

But Germantown got the lead back 14 secondslater, as Seymour and Zachowski connected on a 65-yard pass play.

An interception on Germantown's next possession

gave Port Washington theball deep in the Warhawksend of the field, and thePirates answered with a 8-yard pass play fromBiskobing to MaxFranzkowiak at the 2:58mark of the quarter, givingPort Washington a 28-24 leadafter the extra point wasconverted.

Those were the last pointsthe Pirates scored, asGermantown answered withthree touchdowns in thefourth quarter. Seymour andColten Thomas connected ona 20-yard pass play asGermantown took a 31-28lead with 11:42 remaining.

Germantown's defensethen forced Port Washingtoninto a punt, and Seymourand Zachowski connected ona 4-yard pass play with 5:16remaining. Colin Sathe thenran for the two point conver-sion after a mishandled snapfor the one-point attempt.

Germantown's defensethen stopped PortWashington on fourth downand Seymour finished thescoring for the game with a21-yard run, as Germantowntook a 46-28 lead after theextra point.

"I think I saw the fire Iwanted to in the second halffrom our team, that's what Iwas looking to get back,"Davis said.

Seymour completed 12 of18 passes for 290 yards andfour touchdowns while also throwing an interception. He also ran five times for 62 yards and a touchdown.Zachowski led Germantown receivers with seven catch-es for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Afterward, Germantown had a 4-2 North ShoreConference record an 5-3 overall mark. The win overPort Washington qualified Germantown for the play-offs. It was also Germantown's first win in two weeks,as the Warhawks lost to Whitefish Bay and Cedarburg.

Davis noted his team had tough games in recentweeks.

"It got us down a little bit and we needed to pickourselves back up. I think the guys did a nice jobsticking to our theme: Rising up, getting our fire backagain. That's an important part of tonight for us: Toget going, because we've got more football to playand this is the one that got us in the playoffs."

Germantown will finish the regular season by host-ing Milwaukee Lutheran Oct. 16.
