Attendees at the Neighbors AgainstCrime event outside the GermantownPolice Department Aug. 1 saw the elec-trical weapon used in a demonstration.

Someone got tased.Officer Daniel Moschea explained

that the Taser the official name of thedevice is used when individuals arebeing combative and actively resistingofficers or attempting to flee a scene.Moschea said officer has to take into con-sideration circumstances such as the sur-face an individual is on in the event aTaser is used.

Moschea said that once the probes

from a Taser are attached into a subject, the subjects muscles tense up.

People just feel very exhausted, tiredafter the fact. Theyll be sore, but that it.Theres really no danger in using this, hesaid.

Moschea said the two probes are likefish hooks which will stick into a subjectand deliver a shock.

Moschea then activated the probesinto a volunteer, with the volunteer fallingdown immediately. Another officer thenpulled the probes out.

According to Police Chief Peter Hoell, the department has had Taser units fornine years and every officer is trained inthe use of the units.

Ever since we started using Tasers,we have had a dramatic decrease in the

amount of injuries to officers and suspects.

The decrease in injuries also means adecrease in costs, medical bills (and)overtime, Hoell said.

Also as part of the Neighbors AgainstCrime activities, Lt. David Huesemann andK-9 unit Rambo were in attendance. TheWashington County Sheriffs MobileCommand unit and several Germantown

Fire Department vehicles were at the

event for viewing. In addition, there weremartial arts and kitchen fire safety demon-strations.

Sponsors included We Energies,Roberts Frozen Custard, DistinctPhotography, Leadership Germantown,All American Window & Door and AldosPizza & Catering.

The Germantown School District isntentirely certain how the federal AffordableCare Act will impact the district, but sever-al board members werent shy about theirviews of the law during the July 29 boardmeeting.

In introducing the motion to the board,Board President Robert Soderberg readthe motion as an update on remainingitems discussed in committee, including theAffordable Care Act, which is an oxy-moron, voluntary vision insurance andhealth and medical insurance renewal.

Board member Tom Barney, citinginformation from consultant Greg Kamps, said we do not know yet what the impactof the Affordable Care Act will be on thedistrict.

Superintendent Jeff Holmes said heasked Kamps to change the format sothere are six options which can bereviewed by staff by the end of August.

Board member Bruce Warnimontnoted that the Af fordable Care Act, whichwas to go into effect Jan. 1, has beendelayed a year.

Holmes said we need to be mindful ofall the things that are in the AffordableCare Act and be prepared and ready forwhen it takes effect Jan. 1, 2015.

The Germantown Village Boardpproved a revised contract Aug. 5. for mak-g upgrades to the Spassland Park shelter.

Improvements to the shelter that werepproved by the Village Board Feb. 25clude a utility extension for $35,571 thatas awarded to BCF Construction Corp. andpark shelter and restroom kit for $53,030.

The scope of the project approved by the

llage Board included contracting withnother firm to do earthwork and concrete, umbing, electric and carpentry work. Parknd Recreation Director Justin Caspersonoted that the bids for the other work werejected by Building Construction Oversightommittee on July 9. The bids were re-adver-ed and new bids came in on July 26.

According to Casperson, the lowest bidame $16,503 lower than the July 2 bids butere $19,573 over the remaining balance.

The board approved a recommendationfrom committee to award the contract toAlliance Construction and Design for$108,781 and not to include alternatives. The motion included transferring $21,000from unallocated funds from capital improve-ment borrowing to offset the added cost.

Trustee David Baum, a member of thecommittee, said when the village talked with

contractors, they initially did not understandthe scope of the project and came under thevillage expectations.

"Plumbing was way out of whack. Similarwith the electrical bids," Baum said.

He said the village clarified what it want-ed and re-bid for the second time around"and did all it could" to get the numbersdown.

(StatePoint) Whether you are motivated toelp the planet or simply want to slash homenergy and water bills, there are easy steps toduce your homes carbon footprint.

"Today more than ever, we see the envi-nmental impact we have on our communi-s by the choices we make daily -- from theod we eat to the way we run our homes.

While its easy to pretend these choices dontatter, its even easier to take steps to liveore sustainably and feel good about it," saysett Beitzel, a brand manager at Amana, a

ousehold appliances manufacturer focusedn encouraging consumers to reduce theirarbon footprints.

There are several places in your homehere you can take small steps toward a

    maller carbon footprint.Kitchen

Become more aware of what you put inyour shopping basket. Include more locally-and organically-grown and raised produceand meat in your diet. Avoid overly-packagedproducts and eat sustainably caught orfarmed fish. These choices are often healthier, too.

You can also make a substantial impact byreplacing your old refrigerator with a newerenergy-saving model. Compared to pre-2000models, newer refrigerators can use up to 41percent less energy. As one of the few appli-ances that run constantly, that means a lot ofenergy and cost savings.

Luckily, environmentally conscious homeappliance manufacturers, such as Amana, aregoing above the Department of Energys cur-rent usage guidelines by making energy effi-ciency a priority with newer models.

You can also find efficient dishwashersthat save water and energy. But even with anewer model, youll want to be sure youreonly running the machine when full. For max-imum savings, look for ENERGY STAR quali-fied models on all appliances.

GarageCars that don't have properly inflated tires

account for a 10 percent increase on fuelcosts. Check tire pressure regularly to ensureoptimum performance. And tune up your bikeso you can use it more often!

Unfortunately, the garage is also wheremany send their old refrigerators to store extrasoda. Research shows that 10 million "sec-ond" refrigerators cost consumers an averageof $1.62 billion yearly in energy costs. For acool move, make all your refrigerators energyefficient.
