While winter brings with it many positivesbuilding a snow-man, sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace, outdoor activitiesitalso presents certain areas of danger. However, by using com-mon sense regarding the main areas of risk, one can enjoy ahappy, injury-free season.

Slippery surfacesThe number one injury we tend to see in winter is slips and

falls, stated Dr. Robert Beyer, an emergency medicine physi-cian who works primarily out of Community Memorial Hospitalin Menomonee Falls. Especially when we have an excess ofsnow and ice, falls are very common for us to see. Its veryimportant to be careful.

Senior citizens should be especially cautious, said Beyer.

Their bones are more brittle and some fractureslike a hipfracturecan be pretty devastating, he said. Seniors shouldhave someone with them when they walk on ice and, in gener-

al, have family, friends and neighbors who keep and eye onthem in the winter months.

During the snowy season, the more salt, the better, the doc-

tor said.Use an abundance of salt, he urged. You can never use

too much. Some salt on the driveways, stairs, wherever yourewalking, can prevent falls and injuries.

Cold temperaturesAs many as 700 people die each year from frostbite or

hypothermia, according to the National Safety Council.That, however, is the extreme and the danger begins well

before that, said Beyer, as frostnipthe precursor to frost-biteis far more likely.

Once the temperatures start to drop significantly belowzero with the wind chill, you are at risk, the doctor said. Once

you start to feel pain, that is frostnip. Frostbite is numbness that

said, but when heading outdoors follow this

advice: Cover all exposed areas. Layer clothing and wear proper materi-

al. As a rule, dress in layers, Beyer said.Cotton breathes, but it also absorbs mois-ture. In order to avoid this, active individualsshould wear synthetic clothing that traps heatwithout holding onto the dampness of sweat.

Go inside periodically. If youre goingto be outside longer than 30 minutes, makesure you take breaks to go inside and warmup, said the doctor.

Fire and carbon monoxideWe tend to get a lot more chimney fires

in the winter, said John Delain, public edu-cation coordinator for the Germantown FireDepartment. This happens when peopledont have their chimneys properly cleanedand inspected.

Delain recommends this be done onceper year and he also advises families to havea carbon monoxide detector on all levels oftheir house.

Carbon monoxide emergencies also riseduring the winter months due to the use of thefurnace, he explained.

DrivingMotorists should carry a survival kit when

traveling, said Delain, especially since driv-ing emergencies are much more likely tooccur during the winter than any other sea-son.

According to the Weather Channel web-site, the kit should include: blankets; a snowshovel; a flashlight; hand warmers; matches;bottles of water and protein bars; a syphonpump; lightsticks; flares; and a whistle.

Delain also noted jumper cables, an icescraper and a fire extinguisher.

Its always good to have a supply kit inyour car, he said. A lot of stores even sell

pre-made roadside emergency kits; they canbe obtained very conveniently.

Winter activities

Wisconsin winters are too long for peo-ple to sit inside idle, said Beyer, but pointedout that with hobbies such as skiing, sledding,snowmobiling and ice skating, awareness iskey.

As a rule, these sports are incrediblysafe as long as you take a few precautions,said the doctor. A few guidelines are:

Go easy the first time out for the sea-son. Dont do a strenuous activity that yourenot prepared for, said Beyer. Most of thesports-related activities we see are when itsthe individuals first time out for the year and

they dont have their sea legs yet. Just likedriving in the snow for the first time eachyear, theres a bit of a learning curve.

Watch the alcohol. Use alcohol inmoderation, said the doctor. A lot of thecrashes and fatalities we see with these activ-ities involve alcohol.

Also, he noted, alcohol numbs ones sens-es and depresses the central nervous systemso a person may not feel the full effect of thecold weather.

They are more prone to things likehypothermia and dehydration, said Beyer.

Know your surroundings. Never walkon a lake or river if you dont know how thickthe ice is, said Delain, noting that variousstate websites give ice reports.

Use common sense with physicalchores. Even with mundane tasks such asshoveling, caution should be used, saidDelain.

The elderly and individuals with poorcardiovascular health should ask for assis-tance, he said.

Bottom line: Be smart in the win-ter.

Whatever youre doing, be extremelyaware of your surroundings and be mindfulof your senses, said Beyer.

The Schauer Community School of the Ar tsannounces acting class offerings with theAcademy at Civic Theatre (ACT), the educa-tional arm of the Waukesha Civic Theatre(WCT). The Schauer Center has partneredwith WCT to offer classes in improvisation,character development, play writing, audition

technique, and scene work for ages 6 to 18.All classes are held on Tuesday evenings

and run Jan. 21 through Feb. 25.

Theater Fun 101 (Ages 6-8) from 4:30to 5:20 p.m. An introduction to basic stageskills, while utilizing improv games.

Acting Up (Ages 9-13) from 5:30 to6:20 p.m. or (Ages 14-18) from 6:30 to 7:20p.m. Engage in character, voice, and move-ment exercises to prepare to perform a script-

Dear Dr Winter: My boyfriend just got 19extractions and immediate dentures, but he

has a very obvious overbite with the newdentures. I was just wondering if this could bedue to the initial swelling from the extractionsor is he stuck looking like this? He looks veryunnatural and his lip sticks out. Any adviceyou give would be appreciated.

Dear Melissa, these are great questions andshould be answered by his dentist and surgeon. Idon't know if the denture was supposed toremove the overbite he originally had or not.Sometimes the surgeon or surgical dentist willremove more bone in the upper jaw so thedenture and teeth can be brought back into a morenormal bite, called a Class 1 bite arrangement. Asthey are immediate dentures they are alwaysmade before the teeth are removed so there issome guess-work involved as to where to placethe teeth.

That is often why dentists will remove backteeth first, allow for healing to occur then makethe immediate dentures. This will allow them toset up the back teeth and take an accurate relationbetween the two jaws to cut down on cosmeticand bite related problems. Then the dentists willremove the front teeth and deliver the denture.This process will decrease the guess-work andallow the laboratory to only remove and set a fewteeth as opposed to guessing the positions of anentire arch of teeth at one time. This will alsoresult in a better fit as the back gum tissue willhave healed and the denture will fit more

accurately on the healed tissue.Either way, have your boyfriend see his dentistto evaluate the position of the teeth and theswelling.

It is important to know if they placed bone-grafting material in his tooth sockets. This willhelp prevent bone loss during the first year afterteeth are extracted and allow for easier implantplacement. People lose 40-60% of the width andheight of their remaining bone in the first year

after teeth are removed! So performing graftingis a valuable way to preserve the bone for up toa year while he is deciding if he would like toupgrade to dental implants. Dental implantswill greatly improve his chewing and get rid ofthe plastic in the roof of his mouth.

Dentures need to be relined or remade every3-5 years forever! So I would recommend animplant consultation before the remaining boneerodes and it becomes more difficult to placeimplants in the future.

Germantown broke open a close game against Oshkosh North atthe end of the first quarter to win 81-55 on the final night of the WBYShootout at Concordia University Dec. 28.

The game got off to a slow start as the teams struggled to score.North took a 7-6 lead after Majok Madot converted a basket. With theteams tied at 9-9, Germantown broke the game open as Brian Beardenscrambled for a rebound off a missed basket at the 1:34 mark and con-verted a layup, starting an 11-point run.

I just try to do anything I can to help my team and then give 120percent all the time on the floor, Bearden said afterward.

An 11-point run at the start of the second quarter gave Germantowna 34-11 lead following a dunk by Evan Wesenberg at the 4:40 mark ofthe second quarter.

Once we got a few long rebounds to get going, then we got in theflow, Germantown Coach Steve Showalter said afterward. At first wecouldnt get what we wanted to do against that 1-3-1 (zone).

Germantown held a 47-24 lead at halftime and a 12-2 run gave

Germantown a 62-32 lead after Dearionte Hudson converted two freethrows at the 3:09 mark of the third quarter.

The previous evening Germantown gradually pulled away fromMilwaukee Vincent to win 75-60. The teams were tied at 6-6 when ashort range basket by Wesenberg at the 4:05 mark started a 7-2 runthat gave Germantown a 15-8 lead.

The Vikings cut Germantown's lead to 28-26 at the 4:56 mark of thesecond quarter after Malik Brown converted two free throws, but JakeShowalter responded by converting two free throws on the other end asGermantown scored the next nine points. Germantown held a leadbetween six and 12 points throughout the third quarter and kept thelead at seven points or more throughout the fourth quarter.

Theyre not an easy team to play. Theyre athletic, theyre quick,they shot it really well, Coach Showalter said after the game.

Showalter added his team didnt play that well and we were stillable to fight through and grind out a win.

He said its tough to find new ways to win each time.We have to find different ways and its not always easy, and thats

a tough team, theyre going to beat a lot of teams, Showalter said.With the two wins, Germantown's consecutive winning streak is now

at 67 games. Bearden added that the focus for the team is on the nextgame.

Actually, if you think about it, our calendar year was pretty good,

Showalter said after the win over North. We dont like to celebrate inthe middle of the (season), but it is the end of the year. A whole 2012with zero on the (losing) end and whole 2013 with a zero on the rightside, thats hard to do it has to include a good finish at the end and agood start. Its not easy to do and these guys did a pretty good job ofit.

Kettle Moraine Lutheran swept both of itsgames at the WBY Shootout at ConcordiaUniversity over the Christmas break.

The Chargers defeated BrookfieldAcademy 73-63 Dec. 26. Kettle MoraineLutheran outscored Brookfield by nine points inthe second quarter to break the game open.Ethan Bublitz led the Chargers with 25 points.

Brookfield Academy was ranked fifth in themost recent Division 4 coaches poll. KettleMoraine Lutheran Coach Todd Jahns said thewin over Brookfield Academy was significant

because playing a high ranked team tests theChargers.It was a good gauge to see where weve

come against a quality team. Our roles arestarting to become defined really well. Ourteam is starting to figure out who we are andwhat we can be, Jahns said.

Bublitz also scored 25 points in theChargers 64-41 win over University School ofMilwaukee Dec. 28. The Chargers started witha 18-5 first quarter run and held a 36-21 leadat halftime. The Chargers kept the lead above13 points throughout the second half.

Against University School, Jahns noted histeam liked to run off missed shots and took

advantage of several opportunities againstUniversity School.

On Dec. 27 Germantown lost to Franklin72-59. Higginbotham led Germantown with13 points.
