Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have heard about some newerdentures recently called CAD/CAM dentures. Do you dothese and what are the advantages of this type of denture?

Dear James, I have been at the forefront of denturetechnology for many years and currently lecture aboutdenture technology to other dentists. In our office weoffer Deluxe Turbyfill dentures, CAD/CAM denturesand standard economy dentures.

The differences between these types of dentures haveto do with the amount of time taken to make the dentures, the processing technique and the quality and type ofdenture teeth selected.

There are currently two types of CAD/CAM orcomputer aided design and computer aidedmanufacturing companies making dentures. One type ofdenture the Dentca denture is an extremely accuratelyfitting denture that can be fabricated in as few as twovisits. This technique involves taking a highly accurateimpression and bite registration at the first visit and thenat the second visit delivering the denture! An optionaltry-in appointment is also available. These dentures arebeautiful and extremely accurate. The advantage ofmilled dentures is that once the denture is designed it canbe remade in 2 days! The computer can simply printanother denture if one is ever lost. Patients must realizethat gum tissues can change so there may be a need toreline a reprinted set or take a new impression if gumchanges have occurred. The material that is used to printthe dentures is non-porous and remains color stablewithout incurring as much stain as traditional dentures aswell.

Turbyfill deluxe dentures can take 5-7 visits anddenture teeth are set with the patient present over a two-hour appointment. These are highly characterizedbeautiful dentures but now with a new computerdesigned denture we can make dentures in far fewervisits. We offer consultations to any of our readers to seeif Dentca dentures may be right for you.

Dear Dr. Winter I have severe tetracycline staining onmy teeth and I am very embarrassed to smile. What canI do about this?

Dear Suzanne, there are many ways to try and

improve tetracycline stained smiles. For mild cases weoffer different whitening options from Zoom AdvancedPower to Kor advanced deep bleaching. These canoften eliminate the need for veneers or crowns to coverdarker stains. For patients with gray teeth or dark bandsof brown and gray then veneers or porcelain crownsmay be required to block out the dark color of theunderlying tooth structure.

We invite our readers to call us at 414-464-9021 toschedule your denture, implant or cosmetic consultationvisit or comprehensive exam and x-ray appointment. Please read Dr. Winter’s articles atwww.hamptondentalassociates.com

His latest implant articles were published inNovember 2014 and January 2015 in Dentistry Today.

concerns. We’ll work within those bound-aries to be great neighbors and makeeverybody happy,” Hastings said.

Commission member Robert Warrensaid he was impressed with the number ofresidents who came to the workshop.

“There is some concern with noise, that’s always been out there. Traffic was aconcern also,” Warren said.

Warren said Baum’s concepts couldopen up ways to address some of the con-cerns.

“Overall it was a good exchange, let-ting people see what’s out there. It’s goodfor the Plan Commission to take that infor-mation and process that to figure out whatthe next steps are,” Warren said.

Village President Dean Wolter alsomentioned the turnout and said residentshad comments and questions for the peo-ple who were available to answer them.

“It was successful because all thosewho wanted answers and wanted to comeout and see what was happening wereable to,” Wolter said.

Wolter said the workshop gives thecommission direction as to whether or notto create an overall master plan and whatit uses should be.

Wolter added the hope is to create aplan for a smaller area behind Main Streetthat will drive development in other areasthat may require additional planning.

“But let’s start with something that we

can grasp and get our hands around ratherthan deal with something that’s too big andnot be able to get anything or any move-ment on it,” Wolter said. “If you start smalland become successful in movement andprogress, others areas may become a com-ponent of that where we can push out to it.One thing begets the other, and my hope isthrough working this area, other peoplewill look at opportunities and noticeopportunities that are around it and want toget involved.”

The Better Business Bureau ServingWisconsin continues to receive calls fromconsumers stating they received a call fromthe “IRS” saying they owe money whichneeds to be paid promptly. The BBB hasalso received calls from local accountants

calling to report such calls on behalf of aclient.

“Do not become a victim,” says RanHoth, CEO and President. “This is anaggressive phone scam in which callers usescare tactics in an attempt to get your

money. They may sound convincing whenthey call, but it’s a scam. Don’t fall for it.”

The scam has been making the roundsthroughout the country, includingWisconsin. Typically, callers use fakenames, may leave “urgent” voicemail mes-sages and use “caller ID spoofing”, whichdeliberately alters or disguises the identityof a caller.

Recipients of these calls and victimsalike report that the scammers state youhave unpaid taxes and demand immediate

payment in the form of a pre-paid debitcard or wire transfer. They threaten arrest, deportation, or loss of a business or driver’slicense, if payment is not made.

Rosemarie Bosch of Rosie's Tax &Bookkeeping Services, LLC, Franklin tellsthe BBB that she has received calls fromclients of all ages since June.

"I've been receiving reports from clientssaying they've received unsolicited callsfrom people with thick, foreign accentsmisidentifying themselves as being with theIRS and stating they owe money", saysRosemarie. "They’re told that if they don'tpay up, there will be a warrant out for theirarrest. I tell my clients this is a scam, theyshouldn’t worry, and the IRS would nevercall them on the phone."

Being called the “largest ever” tele-phone fraud scam targeting innocent tax-payers, the IRS has been posting warningsfor months alerting the public about callersposing as Internal Revenue Service repre-sentatives in an effort to defraud.

The IRS will never call to demand imme-diate payment, or request payment withoutgiving you the opportunity to question orappeal the amount they say you owe, Italso does not ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer, and does-n’t make threats such as deportation orarrest.

Report IRS impersonation calls immedi-ately to the Treasury Inspector General forTax Administration at 1-800-366-4484 orhttp://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml

For more information or furtherinquiries, contact the Wisconsin BBB atwww.bbb.org/wisconsin or 414-847-6000 (metro Milwaukee), 920-734-4352(Appleton), 608-268-2221 (Madison) or 1-800-273-1002 (elsewhere in Wisconsin).Consumers also can find more informationabout how to protect themselves fromscams by following the Wisconsin BBB onTwitter, Facebook and You Tube.

There’s no doubt that heating and cool-ing your home is the largest energy expensein your home. In fact, according to theDepartment of Energy, heating and coolingaccounts for about 56 percent of the energyused in a typical U.S. home, which makesefforts to reduce energy costs that muchmore important.

As you heat your home this winter, theexperts at the York brand of heating and airconditioning recommend the following:Perform regular maintenance. Clean air fil-ters, seal any duct leaks, make sure registersare clear of obstructions and check yourinsulation. The Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) reports that improper insula-

Tips to stay warmtion can reduce system efficiency by as muchas 30 percent.

Hire a qualified technician to inspectand service your home comfort system. Thetechnician will make sure your system isworking properly and at peak efficiency. Asa rule of thumb, heat pumps and oil-fired fur-naces need annual tune-ups, while gas-firedequipment can be serviced every other year.

Consider replacing an older, inefficientfurnace or heat pump. A knowledgeabletechnician will be able to recommend a new, more efficient replacement system, such asENERGY STAR®–qualified equipment thatcan help save you money on energy bills.

Efficiency is measured as annual fuel uti-lization efficiency (AFUE) for furnaces andheating seasonal performance factor (HSPF)for heat pumps. The higher the AFUE orHSPF, the more efficient the unit and the lessenergy it requires to heat your home.

Adjust your thermostat. By lowering itjust a few degrees in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating system work lessto maintain a comfortable indoor tempera-ture.

Think about installing a programmablethermostat. Programming your thermostat toaccommodate your family’s time away fromhome and sleeping schedule will help toensure that your system is operating onlywhen you need it.

Maya Angelou, George WashingtonCarver, Dominique Dawes, FrederickDouglass and Jackie Robinson — just someof the many notable African-Americanswho have made an impact on Americanhistory. Black History Month recognizesthem, and all African-Americans, for thecontributions they have made to Americanhistory.

February is Black History Month, a cel-ebration of the accomplishments of African-Americans, past and present. But it wasn'talways a month-long event. It began as anotion of just one man, Dr. Carter G.Woodson.

Born to former slaves James and Eliza,Woodson spent much of his childhood

working in the coal mines of Kentucky. Toobusy and too poor to attend school regu-larly, he taught himself the basics, enrolledin high school at age 20 and graduatedtwo years later. Woodson attended BereaCollege in Kentucky, and after just twoyears of study, graduated in 1901. He wenton to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1912.

During his studies Woodson made astartling discovery: There was very little dis-cussion of African-Americans in Americanhistory books and what little there was wasoften wrong. To correct the situation,Woodson took steps to write African-Americans into the nation's history. Hefounded the Association for the Study ofNegro Life and History in Chicago onSeptember 9, 1915, and a year later, thepublication Journal of Negro History. In1926, he established Negro History Weekin February to focus national attention onthe contributions made by African-Americans to American history.

Why Woodson decided to hold NegroHistory Week in February is a topic ofgreat debate. Some say he did so to honorthe birthdays of Abraham Lincoln andFrederick Douglass. Others argue he choseFebruary in honor of the 13th Amendment,

which abolished slavery. Although theamendment was signed in January, it was-n't until February that slaves started hear-ing the news.

Woodson died April 3, 1950, butNegro History Week lived on. Spurred onby the African-American community in the1960s, it was renamed Black HistoryWeek. In 1975 in response to Senator JohnWarner's call for organizations to do some-thing special in honor of the bicentennial,Woodson's association, now called theAssociation for the Study of Afro-AmericanLife and History (ASALH), turned BlackHistory Week into Black History Month, and provided a theme for the month andsub-themes for each week.

Today the association continues tosponsor the event and designates a newtheme every year. It also produces studykits and other materials to help schools, colleges and other organizations celebratethe event. For more information or to learnhow you can get involved, contact theASALH or check out its Web sitewww.asalh.com. From the notion of justone man, Dr. Woodson G. Carter, BlackHistory Month has evolved into an endur-ing tribute to African-Americans.

By Bob GrimsonGeorge Washington Carver was born

into slavery in Missouri sometime in the1860s. Through hard work and persever-ance, he would become one of this country'sgreatest educators and researchers.

Forced to live on his own at a young ageafter his mother was kidnapped by slavetraders, Carver was an observer of life andthe world, developing an interest in plants. He managed to finish high school and attendboth Simpson College and Iowa AgriculturalCollege (now Iowa State University), earninga bachelor's and a master's degree. While incollege, Carver showed his talents in manyareas. He led the YMCA and the debateclub, attained the highest student rank in thecampus military unit, published poetry andeven had a pair of paintings on display at theWorld's Fair in Chicago in 1893.

Carver's knowledge of plants was sothorough that he was asked to become IowaAgricultural College's first African-Americanfaculty member in 1894. In 1896, he joinedBooker T. Washington at the famed TuskegeeInstitute and directed its agricultural researchuntil his death in 1943. Carver believed thatresearch should have practical value andhelp people. He used the idea of agriculturalextension to benefit farmers in the South bytaking agricultural knowledge directly tothem and their farms. While at Tuskegee,Carver discovered more than 300 products

that could be made from peanuts and over100 from sweet potatoes and encouragedsouthern farmers to end their reliance on cot-ton and diversify with peanuts, sweet pota-toes and peas.

A winner of the prestigious SpingarnPrize, the highest award given by theNAACP, Carver took almost his entire life'ssavings and used it to start the GeorgeWashington Carver Foundation to continuehis work. He was buried on the campus ofTuskegee Institute, next to his friend Booker T.Washington. The recipient of many honorsbefore his death, Carver was honoredposthumously with special postage stampsand election to both the Hall of Fame ofGreat Americans and the National InventorsHall of Fame.
