Germantown boys basketball Coach Steve Showalterresigned from the position last week to take a position as anassistant basketball coach at Lindenwood University in St.Charles, Missouri.

“It is with mixed emotion that I inform you of my resigna-tion as Germantown boys basketball coach,” Showalterwrote in a May 19 letter to Germantown High SchoolAthletic Director Jack Klebesadel.

Showalter served as Germantown boys basketball coachfor 15 years. During that time, Showalter had a 286-81record and led Germantown to state Division I titles in 2012,2013 and 2014, with a runner up finish last season.Germantown also made appearances in the state tourna-ment in 2008 and 2009.

The Germantown team holds the boys state record of 69consecutive wins, a record set during the 2011-12, 2012-13and a portion of the 2013-14 seasons. While atGermantown, Showalter coached his sons Zak and Jake.Zak is currently a member of the University of Wisconsinmen’s basketball team while Jake played last season atNorth Dakota State (Jake Showalter announced after theseason that he is transferring to another school).

In his resignation letter, Showalter thanked the players, administration, coaching staff, parents, the GermantownHoops program and the community for their support.

“Victories are great, and Germantown has had many ofthem, but most importantly this program has always beenabout the kids,” Showalter said in his resignation letter.“That’s what makes the decision hardest for me. Withoutgreat student athletes, and most importantly wonderful peo-ple, these memories would not be nearly as special.”

He then added: “I appreciate the entire Germantownfamily for creating a special place for me and my family.Germantown basketball will always hold a very specialplace in our hearts.”

At Lindenwood, Showalter will join the staff of recently-hired Head Coach Lance Randall. Randall has Wisconsinties, having coached Oshkosh West to two Division I titlesbefore returning to the college coaching ranks.

When reached for comment last week, Klebesadel indi-cated the district was working on posting the opening for thecoaching position and would seek to fill it as soon as possi-

    Memorial Day

Though many people are quick torefer to Memorial Day as the unofficial

beginning of summer, the day is muchmore than that. Initially known asDecoration Day, Memorial Day is a dayto remember those military memberswho died in service of the country.

The origins of Memorial Day remaina topic of debate. In 1966, PresidentLyndon Johnson declared Waterloo,N.Y. as the official birthplace ofMemorial Day. However, the roots ofMemorial Day likely run much deeper,as researchers at Duke University notethat during the Civil War, organizedwomen's groups in the south had begunto decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day as we know it todaycan likely be traced to Charleston, S.C.,

where teachers, missionaries and somemembers of the press gathered on May1, 1865 to honor fallen soldiers. Duringthe Civil War, captured Union soldierswere held at the Charleston Race Courseand hundreds died during captivity.Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried

Memorial Day General John A. Logan is often cited asinspiring similar events in the north. Ascommander-in-chief of the Grand Armyof the Republic, a veterans' organizationfor men who served in the Civil War,General Logan issued a proclamationjust five days after the Charleston eventthat called for Decoration Day to beobserved annually across the country.Logan preferred the event not be held onthe anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for thefirst time on May 30. Celebrating theday in May also was significant to eventorganizers because May is a monthwhen flowers are in bloom, making it

easier for observers of the hoplace flowers on the graves of fadiers. In 1868, events were heldthan 180 cemeteries in 27 stathose figures nearly doubled inBy 1890, every northern state orecognized Decoration Day asholiday. But southern states their dead on a different day uWorld War I, when the holidchanged to recognize Americadied in any war and not just tWar. Nearly every state now ceMemorial Day, a name for the first used in 1882, on the last MoMay.
