Year-end 2015ChatswoodPrivateHospital(CPH)in Sydney receives its New South Wales department of health licence following inspections which started on a Monday at the crack of dawn (06:00).

“The certification was extremely arduous as the certifier on the Friday insisted on a number of key and critical changes. This required a number of consultants, key trades and key staff being called to work through the weekend in order to be ready for the inspection,” says PMA CEO Marc Resnik.

11 JANUARY

CPH welcomes its first patients, operated on by Dr Ray Sacks and Dr John Downie.

The Australian Private Hospitals Association published an extensive report on the new hospital, saying it has emerged as a national leader: “A new private hospital on Sydney’s north shore has solidified the area’s reputation as a national leader in the treatment of patients withear, nose, throat(ENT)andeyeconditions.ChatswoodPrivateHospital became Sydney’s only dedicated private hospital for such procedures when it opened to the public.”

Advanced Health... a dream spanning three decadesProviding affordable, quality surgical services – this has been the dream of Advanced Health founder Carl Grillenberger since 1983, when he first evaluated day-hospital investments in the United States.

Carl returned from the USA and started developing day hospitals in South Africa in the mid-80s, in PresMedLimited, acompanyhefloated on the JSE, first on the development capital board and eventually on the main board. PresMed eventually became the hospitalgroupnowknownasLifeHealthcare.

“At the time, we were able to provide cost-effective surgical facilities, but it was more lucrative to invest in private hospitals. The market was not ripe for day-hospital development,” says Carl.

He went to Australia and developed what is today PresMed Australia, the Australian arm of Advanced Health.

“The new company was a success, because Australian healthcare environment was conducive for the development of day hospitals,” he says.

In 2013, two events in the South African healthcare industry triggered the establishment of a company which would house South Africa day hospitals.

“I realised the South African environment has changed when the Competition Commission announced its investigation into the private hospital industry, which is perceived to be too expensive and which might be involved with theprevention,distortionand/orrestriction of competition. At last day hospitals were in a position to compete with the larger private hospital groups.

“Also, Discovery Health announced that it would pay an enhancement fee to specialists who attend to short-stay procedures in day hospitals. I knew the tide is turning, with the funding industry exploring viable alternatives to contain cost.”

FOCUS AREASIn 2016, three new day hospitals will open in South Africa. These are the Advanced Soweto Day Hospital in Gauteng, the Advanced Knysna Surgical Centre in the Western Cape and the Advanced Vergelegen Surgical Centre in Somerset West.

“We are also looking at the development of additional day hospitals in association with existing licence holders.

“We foresee growth in our industry niche and plan to move the Advanced listing to the JSE main board in 2017 and implement a rights issue to fund the development of additional day hospitals.

“Lastly, weplantorewardourshareholders with a maiden dividend in 2018, as foreseen in the pre-listing prospectus.”Now that more than 75% of all surgical interventions can be attended to in day hospitals, Carl is more convinced than ever that day hospitals can render quality surgical services more cost-effectively than what is available in South Africa. The Advanced philosophy is in line with the changes which are taking place in the hospital industry in the United States and in Europe, and the move to compact and custom-designed short-procedure facilities are being accelerated by technology, the latest being the so-called key-hole surgery, in conjunction with modern anaesthesiological techniques.

ACHIEVEMENTSAdvanced Health was listed on the JSE AltX division to secure funds for the development of day hospitals and the Australian and newly established South African arms were incorporated into the listed entity. At this stage Australian facilities generate some 80% of income, but the ratio should equalise by 2020, when Advanced plans to operate 20 day hospitals in SA and six in Australia.Achievements to date include:•aR100-millioncapitalraise

– Advanced Panorama Surgical Centre in Cape Town,

“Management is currently focused on turning new facilities into smooth-running, profitable day hospitals. Par t of this

focus is the promotion of these facilities in par tnership with like-minded specialists,” says Carl.

The pharmacist who sculpted far-reaching innovations in the healthcare industry, to the benefit of patients and service providers – this is probably the most apt summary of Marc Resnik’s journey in the South African and Australian healthcare industries. Marc is an executive director of Advanced Health, managing director of the company’sAustralianoperations,PresmedAustralia(PMA),andadirectorofallPMAsubsidiaries.

THE EARLY YEARS

Marc Resnik... transforming vision into success

[INTELLECTUALCAPITAL]

1981Marc entered the industry in 1981 as pharmacy intern at the Brenthurst Clinic in Johannesburg, then one of the leading multi-disciplinary hospitals in South Africa.

After that, he joined the Medical Corps for a compulsory two-year military service. He returned to civilian life with immense experience in medical- and surgical-product analyses for tenders.

He joined the Home and Hospitals Dispensary Group and was offered a position to manage the MBS Dispensary. A year later, he was offered the position of Brenthurst Clinic Pharmacy manager. He used his accumulated experience to play a leading role in implementing the concept of clinical pharmacy in South Africa, which saw clinical pharmacists accompanying medical specialists on patient ward rounds, resulting in professional interaction to the benefit of patients.

1987 Two years later, in 1987, Marc became Brenthurst Clinic hospital manager and in the subsequent five years spearheaded the facility through major renovations, growing it to ten theatres, 220 beds and a state-of-the-art ICU and high-care unit.

1992In1992,hejoinedtheLifecareClinics Group and became managing director 18 months later. Under his leadership, with his keen eye for recognising changes in the healthcare industry, the group grew to ten hospitals, including the only private hospital for drug and alcohol rehabilitation in the country. He introduced the first home healthcare business into South Africa and spearheaded the first joint business relationship between government and private hospitals. Within threeyears,Lifecarehadgrownto become one of the top five hospital groups in South Africa.

1996 In 1996, he approached Carl Grillenberger, now Advanced Health CEO and then founder and managing director of the listed President Medical Group(PresMed),withthestrategic idea to merge the two groups under their leadership. This vision was enacted by yearend, making PresMed one of the largest private hospital groups in South Africa, with Marc serving as a director on the board.

1997In 1997, Marc emigrated to Australia, joining Carl who had by then set up PMA, and became managing director of the company the following year. PMA was established as a healthcare company investing and specialising in the establishment and the management of ophthalmic day-surgery hospital facilities in Australia.

GROWING PMAMarc set about cautiously and systematically growing PMA. Milestones include the opening of its first facility, the Ophthalmic Surgery Centre(OSC)inthebusinessdistrictof Chatswood. Once this business was established and its ethos became known in the ophthalmic industry, Epping Surgery Centre (ESC)wassetup15kmnorth-westof Chatswood in the business district of Epping.

Two years ago, through a strategic opportunity, PMA acquired the only dedicated ENT and facial day hospital(SENT)inSydney.

The growth in OSC and SENT led to the decision to merge the two businesses and in January 2016 the ChatswoodPrivateHospital(CPH)was opened.

This facility is recognised as one of the largest day hospitals with overnight facilities in Australia, with more than 55 accredited surgeons operating in its six theatres. PMA now has more than 80 accredited specialist surgeons associated with it.

and he lectured to many wildlife organisations. He also authored twomanuscripts,TheLifeofLionsand Bushwalks in the Kruger Park.

He is keen on fitness, believing this is essential to one’s wellbeing. He regularly participates in a contact martial art sport known asBrazilianJiuJitsu, andhasalsopractised in the Chinese martial art of Tai Chi.

Marc is also community driven and gives of his time after hours assisting those in need and in a less fortunate position.

Following research into areas of oppor tunity, another facility was established one hour nor th of Chatswood,

and the Central Coast Day Hospital (CCDH) was built.

GROWING THE INDUSTRY Marc’s input into the industry extends beyond PMA. Through a strategic association with a group of ophthalmologists in Bankstown in west Sydney, Marc has an involvement in the strategy and marketing of this company. He also co-founded the only laser vision clinic in the Central Coast of NSW.

He notched up another first for the industry by motivating a

group of ophthalmologists and philanthropists to set up a private ophthalmic day hospital to operate its business within a public eye hospital facility, to the benefit of all. He also co-founded the Independent Ophthalmic Network of Australia, consisting of over 200 independent ophthalmologists, which is now part of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists.

AT HOMEAfter hours, he finds time to express his deep love for wildlife, having literally grown up in the Kruger National Park. His interest in wildlife photography saw him win numerous awards over the years

Some comments from colleagues:

Marc is a conservative, loyal and focussed individual.

He understands the principle of creating a strong team around him – it is easier for a team to achieve objectives than trying to do it on your own.

Punctual, accurate and organised...
