raditional WorshipTFrom the third chapter of Genesis on, we are told hundreds of timesabout the coming of the Messiah, the anointed One, who will redeemall people and the whole created order. We learn that Christs work ofredemption extends beyond human beings. Te whole earth and all ofcreation will be recreated, made new. Te revelation of John tells us thatthere will be a new heaven and a new earth. Te predictions of Jesusbirth are so exact and specific, they alone are testimony to the deity of

Christ. rue words of prophecy from God can never be wrong in eventhe slightest detail. In Deuteronomy we read that if the words of theprophet do not come true, we need not pay heed, that person is not aprophet from God. We can rest assured in the Scriptures, our Messiahhas come, is here now, and will come again. Phrases of the opening carol,O Come, O Come Emmanuel, appear as early as the Middle Ages. It waslater codified and put into metrical form. John Mason Neale translated

the Latin into English in 1861 which is the text we sing this morning. While the traditional tune may have come earlier in history, the firstdocumented manuscript was in 1561. Each verse highlights one aspectof Christ proclaimed in prophecy. Te tune sung this morning in theCall to Worship, is about a month old! - Dr. Dan Sharp
