In each of the weeks this summer we’ve been working

our way through the order of service talking about the

various aspects of worship. Today we’re looking at

the portion we simply call pastoral report. One of the

challenges of a larger church is to stay in touch with the

realities of the member’s daily lives, especially in times

of joy, uncertainty, or sorrow. These brief minutes in

our service give all of us the opportunity to rejoice with

those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. We

can pray for specific people. We can visit those in the

hospital. We can write a note of encouragement or give

someone a call. We can be the hands, feet, and voice

of Jesus as we function as the Body of Christ. You won’t

know every person mentioned, but you can pray. These

moments are also a good reminder that those sitting

around us have all kinds of unspoken things going on in

their lives and that we are a community of believers, not

simply a large group of individuals sitting in a sanctuary.

We’ve come to worship today, to re-tune our hearts and

our lives to God’s perspective, to commune with Him,

and to uphold our brothers and sisters in the Lord. As

you wait for the service to start (or during the worship),

pray for that person sitting in front of or beside you.

    ABOUT COMMUNION

Today we celebrate the sacrament o Communion, also knownas the Lord’s supper, the story o which is ound in Luke 22:7–19.

We believe in an “open table.” We invite every believerwho has publicly proessed aith in Jesus to join us in thiscelebration. We believe by the power o the Holy Spirit, thatthe bread and the cup become or us the living presence othe broken body and shed blood o Jesus. We do not believeit becomes actual flesh and blood, but the spiritually livingpresence o God through the Holy Spirit.

Presbyterian churches do not have altars like otherchurches may. We have a table, symbolic o the Great Feasto Thanksgiving we will one day enjoy with Jesus and theheavenly host, as illustrated in Matthew 26:29 & Luke 22:16–18.

We view the cross o Christ as the final and sufficient altar, onwhich the ultimate sacrifice was made.

    Suggestions for Celebrating Communion. Beore serving thebread and wine (non-alcoholic grape juice), the pastor will leadthe congregation in a time o prayer. During this time, conessyour sins to God; ways you have violated His commandments;

areas o your lie where you are not living by aith; things you doin an attempt to earn His avor.

While the bread is being served, meditate on what the deatho Jesus means or you; how the sins you conessed were laidupon Him and paid or with His body. Rejoice that you do notsuffer God’s judgment because Christ suffered this judgment onyour behal.

While the cup is being served, let it wash away your guilt, muchthe way we are washed spiritually by the blood o the Lamb(Jesus). One day, you will east with God and all that your heartdesires will be ully satisfied. Take this time to coness specificthings that capture your heart more than God (approval oothers, success, your amily, etc.). Rest in His presence.
