    ABOUT OUR GUEST

  • One of the truths sometimes overlooked in the Reformation was the significance and use of sign and symbol in worship. There had been great excess in the Roman church with symbols, nearly to the point of magic, and perilously close to idolatry. The Reformers strongly reacted, throwing out everything smattering of sign and symbol; but art teaches and expresses faith. God gave very specific instructions regarding signs and symbols used in worship. The problem was not with signs and symbols, but with what they had become through a lack of understanding of their purpose. You will note that each worship service begins with the Bible being elevated and carried down the center aisle. As a church we are visually saying that this Book is our source, our authority in all matters. When it is read we stand. It is treated like no other book. It is like no other book. The crucifer (cross) follows the one carrying the Bible. Again, we are saying in a symbolic and visual way, that the cross of Jesus Christ, and the Word of God are central and foundational in our worship. We worship neither the Bible nor the cross as both point to the Triune GodFather, Son, and Holy Spirit, the one God we do worship. - Dr. Dan Sharp
