REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY
As we approach the final Sunday of the Church’s year, our a$en!on is directed toward a dual realiza!on – our eternal life and the life of mankind in general. For the atheist, death is the end and summa!on of our life; however, for the Chris!an death is only the beginning of an eternal existence of love and comple!on or ruina!on and eternal torment brought about by our own ac!ons and desires. Throughout various cultures, there exists beliefs that good triumphs over evil in the end. It is this final judgement that gives way to the perfec!on of God’s crea!on and the restora!on of order. A%er the chaos caused by the introduc!on of evil into our existence through the exercising of our free will, humanity was le% to struggle against the evil they introduced through their free will. This struggle would pit good against evil both for the individual and society, itself. Despite this struggle, the Divine le% room for hope. This hope was to be realized in a Messiah who would crush the head of the enemy and bring about a re-crea!on where the Divine would “walk again” with …...

Reflections on the Readings for this Sunday
Deacon Rob
. . . . His own. This re-crea!on is the fulfillment of God’s Divine Plan brought about by His great love and desire. It would lead to a judgement of the individual and of the world as a whole. It is this judgement that ends the Church’s year.
Today’s first reading is from the Book of the Prophet Daniel. In this reading, the apocalyp!c scene depicts the coming of Michael, the archangel and great prince, during the !me of great distress. This guardian of Israel will collect the righteous and separate them from the wicked who will be sentenced to everlas!ng horror and disgrace. The selected wise will shine luminously and lead the good to jus!ce and eternal happiness. The selec!on of this account primes us to rec!fy our ac!ons and make sure they are in compliance with the Will of the Lord who will judge us at our death and at the !me of fulfillment. It is at this !me that Christ will restore all back to God. It is the !me when Christ the Judge will come and separate Good from Evil as He, alone, restores order.
It is this same intercessor, Christ Jesus, that the second reading from the Le$er to the Hebrews, discusses. Christ is portrayed as the only source for this restora!on. Being both the eternal High Priest and the eternal sacrificial lamb, Jesus makes perfect the fallen humanity and consecrates all to the Father. This once and for all !me sacrifice of Christ has created the New and final Covenant, displaying for all humanity the depth of agape love the Creator has for his own. This new rela!onship has transformed the old and has established order where disorder previously existed due to the fall of Adam and Eve. It permanently separates good from evil or the Just from the Unjust. It is the final reconcilia!on of man with God and the perfec!on of crea!on for eternity.
This separa!on is the scene depicted in the Gospel of Mark. In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns his disciples of what is to come. Christ prognos!cates a great tribula!on that will be marked by a great cosmic event This event will herald the return of Jesus to Earth with his angels to gather up the righteous and punish the wicked. As is usual, this scripture marks more than one event. This prophecy foretells the fall and the destruc!on of the
Temple by the Romans in the immediate future as well as the end of the Ages prophesied by Daniel and an!cipated by Chris!ans. Jesus warns his followers that they must prepare because no person, not even Himself, knows the !me for these events to occur. That being the case, it behooves all to transform their hearts with the mercy of God; thus, preparing themselves for the apocalyp!c events and Jesus’ final appearance. This “metanoia” of the individual will precede the final outcome of history. It is the only way that both the individual and society can discover true goodness and happiness. It is the way of
Christ.
Holy Mother the Church takes the opportunity to remind us of our needed transforma!on or metanoia. Next week, we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. To prepare ourselves for this solemnity and for our own par!cular judgement, should it occur, Holy Mother the Church calls us to discernment and prayer. The !ming of her request reflects the same !ming that Jesus was giving the people of his !me. Christ knew that since the
New Temple, the Church, was being built, then, it followed that the Old Temple would fall. Its desecra!on and total destruc!on would be viewed as the “end !mes” by Jews whose life centered around this structure. From that !me onward, Jews would have no place to join God in their supplica!ons for the forgiveness of their sins. Likewise, the Church knows that since we do not know the !me of our own worldly destruc!on or death, we, too, must seize the opportunity to approach God and ask for our own forgiveness by Him and our brothers and sisters. Are we going to con!nue our worldly ways or are we going to allow God to so%en our “hearts of stone” and replace them with a natural and divine heart of love and mercy? As we conclude the Church’s year, our own fate lies in our own decisions and in the mercy of the One who came to forgive all who had “ears to hear”.
