Excerpts from “Adonais” by Percy Bysshe Shelley (England, 1792-1822).
Peace, peace! He is not dead, he doth not sleep – He hath awaken from the dream of life - ‘Tis we, who lost in stormy visions, keep With phantoms an unprofitable strife,
And in mad trance, strike with our spirit’s knife Invulnerable nothings. - We decay
Like corpses in a charnel; fear and grief Convulse us and consume us day by day,
And cold hopes swarm like worms within our living clay.
He lives, he wakes - ‘tis Death is dead, not he; Mourn not for Adonais. - Thou young Dawn,
Turn all thy dew to splendour, for from thee The spirit thou lamentest is not gone;
Ye caverns and ye forests, cease to moan! Cease, ye faint flowers and fountains and thou Air, Which like a mourning veil thy scarf hadst thrown
O’er the abandoned Earth, now leave it bare Even to the joyous stars which smile on its despair.
He is made one with Nature; there is heard His voice in all her music, from the moan
Of thunder, to the song of night’s sweet bird; He is a presence to be felt and known
In darkness and in light, from herb and stone, Spreading itself wher’er that Power may move
Which has withdrawn his being to its own; Which wields the world with never-wearied love,
Sustains it from beneath, and kindles it above.

UPDATE 2: AUCHENFLOWER CHURCH SITE DEVELOPMENT STAGE 1 The planned construction of a fence to block access to the front carpark and front entries of the church will be delayed until mid-January 2019. The developers have advised they will need to design and obtain approval for changes to the sewer lines before they can commence changes to Harriet St and the front carpark of the church. However, trees lining the front of the property & the dead fig tree will be removed in the next couple of weeks,
The change in timing will not affect the overall time for construction and has the bonus of allowing the Advent and Christmas season to proceed without disruption.
Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS After last Sunday’s 8.30am Mass (at Holy Spirit ) three birthdays were celebrated with the cutting of a cake (left-right) Michael Peluso, Fr Wrex (70th) & Frank O’Hare (90th) We wish all 3 many happy returns for their special days.
WORLD DAY OF THE POOR—SUN. 18 NOVEMBER. In his message for the second World Day of the Poor, Pope Francis has called for a new evangelisation that prompts Catholics “to make tangible the Church’s response to the cry of the poor”.
In a letter to clergy throughout Australia, Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life chairman Bishop Terence Brady encouraged all Catholic communities to be involved and respond to the theme of day: “This poor man cried and the Lord heard him” (Psalm 34:7). “The Holy Father notes that there are many different forms of poverty & asks us to consider ‘Who are the poor?’,” Bishop Brady said.
“He describes how we only recognise the voice of the poor in silence and then, having listened, we must answer. Our response, he suggests, calls for a ‘loving attentiveness which honours the person … and seeks out his/her best interests’.” Pope Francis inaugurated the World Day of the Poor at the end of the Jubilee Year of Mercy in 2016. The Pope’s 2018 message was signed on the feast day of St Anthony of Padua (June 13), the patron of the poor.
Limited copies of the ’Media Release’ by the
Australian Catholic Bishops Conference are available from the rotary stands at both churches.
