A formal compost and garden waste storagearea is being constructed at the Durbanvillerose garden.

“Previously, all garden refuse was informal-ly dumped behind some trees.

“With the construction of a skip zone, all therefuse will go into a skip and will be removedby a truck,” said Chantal Michaels, director ofCity Parks at the City of Cape Town.

The second part of the project is the con-struction of brick paving from the service gate,as trucks find it difficult to load or off-loadma-terials under wet condition because the areabecomes too muddy, she said. Further work tothe tune of R140 000 planned at the rose gardenin the 2015/2016 period include an upgrade ofthe external parking area and entrance road(R50 000); repair work to the concrete benchstands and brick paving to the staff room(R50 000) and survey of rose beds (R40 000).

Daar sal egter ’n fyn balans gehandhaaf moetword.

gedagte gehou wordwanneer bemiddelingplaasvind, aldus Pikoli.

With less thanaweek to go to theSouthAfri-canNationalChampionshipsheld inBloem-fontein, the Brackenfell junior drum majo-rettes are devastated after their gear wasstolen last week.

According to a Facebook post by Leonivan der Schyff on a local forum, 28 bagswithkit and a music centre were stolen at theBellville Velodrome on Sunday night.

“Their bags with boots, character shoes, jass pants and toiletries, to the value ofR1 400 per bag were stolen.

“Our music centre cost us R2 400 two ye-ars ago,” she said.

According to van der Schyff the children, their parents and trainers are shattered.

“Funds are low and we don’t know howweare going to get our young ladies to natio-nals without these necessities.”

Van der Schyff appeals to the communityto assist the group.

“If there is anyone who is able to sponsorour girls with bags or anything, please con-tact us.”

In April the squad, no strangers in natio-nal competitive cirles, came second at theChampion of Champions tournament at theWestern Province Championships.

The National Championships will takeplace between 5 and 11 July and the girlswe-re set to leave Cape Town on Friday.V Anyone able to sponsor the girls can contact Yo-landa Verhoef on 061 405 1605.

A teacher who lives in Ridgeworth in Bell-ville recently lastweekparticipated in a glob-al NASA maths and science programme forteachers in the USA.Shaun Keyser teaches Grade 7 learners at

Bridge House School in Franschhoek andwas part of NASA’s Space Camp educationalprogramme. The camp is specifically aimed at teachers

wishing to advance science, technology, en-gineering and maths (STEM) in their

schools.A number of teams visited the US Space

and Rocket Centre (NASA’s official visitorinformation centre for the Marshall SpaceFlight Centre) in Huntsville, Alabama.Westley Casey from the Space Camp ex-

plained in a statement that the attendeeswere tested on leadership, teamwork and de-cision-making and given a number of mis-sions.Some of their experiences included astro-

naut simulators and virtual tours into spaceto “save” the International Space Station(ISS), Casey stated. The groups were given lesson plans based

on actual NASA content, which will bepassed on to their learners in their class-rooms for practical learning.Shaun said a company called Honeywell

fully sponsored his trip and one of his favour-ite activities was the simulated parachutejump into water. He was part of Team Zarya, which means

November 1998.Casey stated the participating teams were

each made up of 15 members. He said the camp operates throughout the

year and trainees sleep in quarters designedto resemble the ISS and train in simulatorslike those used by NASA.“Nearly 700 000 trainees have graduated

from Space Camp since its opening in Hunts-ville in 1982,” Casey said.“Last year, children and teachers from all

Pyphet in 1958 as onderwyser begin by

die einde nog net so verlief.

hetmedelye sedert verledeDinsdag inge-stroom. Noddy Schutte onthou Pyp as ’npuik onderwyser. “Hy was ook ’n goeierugby-afrigter.My liefde vir geskiedenishet ek by hom gekry. Hy kon so baie ek-stra inligtingbuite diehandboekkonteksverskaf,” sê Schutte.“Rus in vrede, my onnie!” het William

Pepper geskryf.

Rochelle in Bellville begrawe waar hywoonagtig was.

Ná ’n 5 km-pretloop is daar besoek af-gelê aandie KleinAkker-plakkerskampnetbuitekant Kraaifontein.

“Goeie leierskapenwaardige rolmodelle is ’n nasionale pro-bleem in Suid-Afrika.

Pet heroes make their mark in blood

A few of the Tygerberg Animal Hospital’s blooddonor heroes.

MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb

Who knew pets could donate blood?Well, they can, and have been doingso at a Bellville animal hospital for

at least four years. This essential service to animal hospitals

across the province and country has beenrunbyDrAnnie Singh at theTygerbergAni-mal Hospital (TAH) in Kenridge since 2011.Singh calls theTygerberg Pet BloodDonor

Clinic her “baby”.“We supply many of the animal hospitals

in the Western Cape with blood, but thereis a hospital in Pretoria which also has ablood bank,” she says.“I guessyoucould sayweshare theburden

to supply animal hospitals across the coun-try.”Singh says just last week some of their do-

nor blood was sent off to Vredenburg andeven Port Elizabeth, as well as Pretoria.“We have 60 clients [donors], mainly dogs

and about 10 cats. It is more difficult to gethold of donor cats – I’m not sure that peopleare aware of this service,” she says.Singh explains the process for donor ani-

mals.

“Generally, the client first has to sign on.We need a dog of over 30 kg, which is notobese. It has to be a standard, healthy largebreed animal between one and eight yearsold.“The reason is simple: We take about

350 ml of blood at a time. With the anti-coag-ulant, a donation is about 450 ml in volume,”she says. The principle is the same as for humans,

who have to be about 55 kg to donate half alitre, she says. For cats it is a little different.“Cats are normally only about three to

four kilograms in size. We take only 40 ml– 60 ml at most.”She says they don’t keep cats’ blood, it is

used immediately and only in emergencies.“Because we take so little blood, you can-

not store it. There isn’t a bag small enoughto store it in.”So howdoes the processwork and does the

donor animal feel any pain?“We do give them sedation, but this just

cuts off the edge, as it is a general anaesthet-ic. They don’t really feel any pain becauseof the sedation.“The owner comes in themorning and has

to keep them starved for the sedative. Then

we do a blood count,” Singh says. They proceed with a blood smear, a para-

site check and if all is 100% okay, they pro-ceed with the sedation.“The animal goes from table to floor. We

donothaveanyproblemswith this.Theyarefed immediately as soon as the procedure iscompleted. Then they are given a dewormerand can go home,” she says.Their donor pets donate every three

weeks, she says.“In theory they can donate every three

weeks, but we rotate the clients.”“We have clients as far as Hermanus. This

dog needed emergency medical assistanceand his owner thought a good idea to ‘giveback’ to other pets would be to donate.Whenwe need blood, we call on donors. We alsohave clients from the southern suburbs, inClaremont and such.“The blood bank has been my baby since

the beginning,” she says.“I’m not sure everyone knows of this ser-

vice, but we did have an open day about amonth ago. We also have a board up in ourfacilities with our donor heroes. Soon we’llstart to give them gold stars or red stars.”The donor animals “retire” at the age of

eight.

The charity bargain shop in Pa-row is calling on the public tosupport their sales in aid ofmobi-le welfare for animals in the Lit-tle Karoo.“We have the most gorgeous

owl collection donated to ourshop and plenty of bric-a-brac, se-vens singles, videos, CDs andDVDs,” said Gloria Pitlo ofKAPS, the organisation helping

these animals.Gloria said they have lots of

warmwinter clothing and welco-me job lot buyers to whom theywould offer a special discount. The shop is open every Friday

from 10:00 to 15:00 and every Sa-turday from 09:00 to noon at ShopNumber 4 in the Montana Buil-ding at 249Voortrekker Road, Pa-row.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE

Daar was die afgelope maand tweevoorvalle in die Middestad-winkel-sentrum in Bellville waarin skelms

hulself as polisiebeamptes voorgedoen het.Só sê kapt. Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder

van die Bellville-polisie.In diemees onlangse voorval, opSaterdag

Just over 68 000 units of drugswith a street value totalling ne-arly R2.4 million have been con-

fiscated by the Metro Police GangandDrug Task Team since July 2013

During the same period, 3 846 sus-pects were arrested for drug-relatedoffences, the bulk being in Manen-berg, Hanover Park, Kraaifontein,Elsies River and Steenberg.

Making the announcement lastweek,Citymaycomember for safetyand security, JP Smith, said thesestatistics do not include the succes-ses by the City’s other enforcementagencies, but the Metro Police De-partment accounts for the bulk of itsenforcement.

Familiar faces“The figures for the current finan-

cial year are slightly lower than theprevious year becausewehave beenside-tracked by land invasions andprotests. However, this is still not-hing to sneeze at when one consi-ders that we have but a fraction ofthe resources compared with to ourSouth African Police Service coun-terparts,” said Smith.

“We have also started employinga more intelligence-driven appro-ach with the help of communitymembers and it is paying dividends.Ultimately, however, we need to seean improvement in the criminal jus-tice because far too often we findwe’re arresting familiar faces.”

The City of Cape Town continuesto increase its focus on drug abusewith a strategy that cuts across anumber of directorates in order toclamp down on the drug trade, butis also increasing access to treat-ment and running a number of pre-ventative campaigns.

The United Nations establishedInternational Day against DrugAbuse and Illicit Trafficking to re-mind member states of their com-mitment to creating an internatio-nal society free from drug abuse.

The City of Cape Town has esta-blished six substance abuse treat-ment sites since 2008.

Between July 2011 and June 2014,4 311 people sought help at the CityHealth substance abuse treatmentsites in Tafelsig, Khayelitsha, DelftSouth, Milnerton and Parkwood.

The gender breakdown mirroredthat of the Medical Research Coun-cil, with a 76 male / 24 female split. The most common substancesclients had been using were crystalmethamphetamine (tik), dagga, al-cohol and heroin.

“Our treatment sites accommoda-ted the highest number of clients ofany service provider in the provin-ce between July and December lastyear and this proves a number ofthings,” said City mayco memberfor health, Siyabulela Mamkeli.

“Firstly, it underscores the greatneed for treatment, but also speaks

to the quality of services that clientshave access to when they enrol inour programme,” said Mamkeli.

Early interventionAdditionally, the City’s Social De-

velopment and Early Childhood Di-rectorate has been driving preven-tative initiatives through its Sub-stance Abuse Programme, including the Strengthening Fami-lies Project, Soft Skills preventionprogramme in schools and the “BeSmart, Don’t Start” theatre cam-paign.

In this financial year, the variousprojects reached an audience of mo-re than 23 000, most of them youngschool children.

“Children are being exposed tosubstance abuse at a young age andso we have had to develop and im-plement programmes that speak di-rectly to them. This is why the bulkof our interventions are done at pri-mary school level. The topics are of-ten hard-hitting, but we can’t affordto be in denial about the realitiesour children are dealing with.

“The impact of our interventionsis often not as explicit as the enfor-cement efforts, but becomes appa-rent in the medium to long-termwhen we see positive behaviouralchanges in children and youth onceconsidered to be at risk, as well asthe change in the social fabric ofcommunities,” he said.

Task team heraldsdrug crime success

Last week the United Nations calledfor 26 June to be International Dayagainst Drug Abuse and Illicit Traf-ficking to express its commitmentto achieve the goal of an internatio-nal society free of substance depen-dency.

In South Africa the National De-velopment Plan serves as the coun-try’s blueprint for preventing andreducing alcohol and substance de-pendency.

Research indicates the socialcosts of substance related traumaandaccidents in SouthAfrica far ex-ceed those of other countries and in-toxication is a major factor in roadaccidents.

Furthermore, the relationshipbetween alcohol and illegal substan-ces, crime, and violence is both di-rect and complex.

According to SACENDU, SouthAfrica has the highest percentage ofFAS (or Foetal Alcohol Syndrome)

worldwide and alcohol dependencyhas increased.

Tik (or metamphetamine) has be-come the biggest problem, especial-ly in theWestern Cape, withwomenbeing the most dependent and thenumber of unemployed persons ad-mitted for inpatient treatment isnow twice as much as those of theirworking counterparts.

Social services organisationBadi-sa provides services to individualswho are substance dependent.

Their approach is strongly gover-ned by their commitment to serveand they currently have two pro-grammes under their management.

The Ramot Treatment Centre forsubstance dependency, situated inParow East, currently caters forabout 400 patients a year.

Only 100 of their 400-bed capacityare funded by the department of so-cial development, meaning the ba-lance of patients have to be private-

ly funded. In speaking to Enya vanZyl, one of the social workers at thecentre, she reiterates that the dona-tion of fresh food remains one oftheir biggest challenges, since thepatients show an increased appetiteonce they have completed their phy-sical detoxification.

Individualswho are substance de-pendent do not exist in isolation andexcept for helping the individualswhose lives are affected by the sub-stance, their families, children, friendsandcolleagues areall impac-ted.

The investment in these individu-als therefore has a direct impact onall spheres of society.

Better facilities at the Gene Louw Traf-fic College in Brackenfell will impro-ve Western Cape traffic safety and fa-

cilitate the training of traffic officers, repor-ted Arrive Alive last week.

An upgrade to the K53 track and a newvehicle testing centre are scheduled forcompletion in August.

The project, valued at R26 million, startedin April last year. The office space and thelecture rooms at Gene Louw have also beenimproved in recent months. Students at thecollege have to travel to the Paarl DrivingLicence Testing Centre for K53 practicaltraining but that will change with the com-pletion of the new track at the college. Thedepartment will be using the testing centrefor training and other joint operations.

Head of the college, Farrel Payne, saidthis was the first time these facilities werebeing upgraded since the college opened 25years ago.

“To enhance training, the facilities willbe equipped with modern equipment andtechnology. We will be able to train trafficofficers and examiners we can be proud of.”

The testing centre will also be used by thedepartment’s transport administration andlicensing component to retest drivers andmotor vehicles.

The college plans to offer free vehicletests to the public before the Easter and De-cember holiday periods.

Vehicles found to have faults will not bediscontinued or impounded to give moto-rists time to rectify the problems identified.

Dis vooruitgegaan deur ’n kindertea-terproduksie by Oakhill-kerk in Sonstraal-hoogte.

So het ek ’ngraad 1-leerder vir ’n klasmaat, nadat sy haar lelik afgeknouhet, hoor sê: “Ek mag jou maarseermaak, want Jesus het klaarvir my sondes betaal!”

’n Verwrongegodsbegrip mag hieruit voort-spruit.

Hou godsdiensonderrig uitskole; dit hoort tuis aanmoedersknie.

I agree with the letter “Cow-boys do cry, behind closeddoors”, TygerBurger, 24 June.Being a “cowboy” myself, weare faced with so many negati-ve situations both internallyand externally. There is noprogress for junior members, some stationary for over 10years in their position, not toeven start mentioning thefinancial situation.

We are faced with dangerousand emotional situations daily, seeing and living throughthings some of the generalpublic will never come acrossin their lives. The passion ofour “cowboys” is slowly dying. We are so quick to refer to theeffectiveness of “cowboys” inother countries, but take adeeper look at how theirwell-being is taken into conside-ration. It’s time we also gettaken care off. A positivemember equals a productivemember.

Daar is plek vir Jesus Chris-tus in skole.

SLICE OF LIFE

Greatestdanger lurksin the homeOne in every two women killed aremurdered by their partner.

Research by the Medical ResearchCouncil, mapping trends over a decade, shows murder by a relative or loved one, often referred to as intimate femalehomicide, has become the leading causeof women being killed. Researchers foundlittle had been recorded in police docketson prior abuse history. This is alarming,as murder is seldom the first act ofviolence against an intimate partner.Perhaps if a history of abuse had beenrecorded, the murder could have beenprevented.

Children don’t fare much better. Morethan two children are murdered in SouthAfrica every day, according to the 2011/12crime statistics. Our rate of child homici-de is more than double the global avera-ge, according to the World Health Organi-sation. Over a third of these murderstake place in the child’s home and morethan a third of children are killed bysomeone they know. There was also ahigh rate of sexual assault in these cases.

In fact, over 50 children are raped dailyin our country, according to the 2013/14crime statistics. And these are just thereported cases.

These statistics should scare you. Theyshould leave you feeling disturbed. Theyshould spur you to action, either to leavea dangerous situation or help those whofind themselves in one.

Hiding behind your curtains is nolonger an option. Preventing theseatrocities is everyone’s concern.

Marno Plaatjies

DESIRÉE RORKE@dezzierorke

A young man from Fisantekraal has bigdreams – he plans to represent SouthAfrica at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Marno Plaatjies, a wrestler affiliated tothe Olympians Sport Academy (OSA), wasrecently elected to represent South Africa atthe Spanish Open Tournament in July thisyear, pushing him closer to achieving hisOlympic dream.

The 23-year-old, who started wrestling in2006, is in training to qualify for the 2016Olympic Games.

“My participation in Spain is part of mypreparation to go to the World Champion-ship in Las Vegas in September, where Ihope to qualify for the Olympic Games,” hesays.

UpliftmentThe OSA works to uplift children from the

rural areas of Fisantekraal, Klipheuwel,Joostenberg Vlakte and Philadelphiathrough the sport of wrestling. Their assist-ance extends to offering transport to train-ing facilities, tournaments, food and wres-tling gear.

“Marno is one of our rising stars. We areextremely proud of his achievements andwish him the best of luck in Spain. The mainpurpose of the OSA is to reach the youth andteach them that one can follow a differentlifestyle, have dreams and accomplishthem,” says OSA secretary Wendy Bosse.

“Because of the area that I lived in, if I didnot become involved in wrestling I wouldmost probably have fallen into gangsterismand alcohol or drug abuse as these are thenorm for Fisantekraal’s youth,” says Marno.

“Wrestling has taught me to be motivatedand dedicated to what I do and to be able tomake the right choices even if I am faced bychallenges.

“Wrestling has taught me that you canstill have a dream and follow that dream. Ithas opened many doors for me and put mein a position from which I was able to geta sponsor to go study. It taught me to riseabove my circumstances and become a bet-ter person,” says Marno.

“It also gave me the opportunity to travelto many places overseas and see other coun-tries, something that would not have beenpossible if I did not become involved in thesport.”

Local business Durbell Pharmacies and

Tiny van Schalkwyk have helped make thispossible for Marno. They’ve been sponsorsof the OSA, which has been in partnershipwith Olympians Social Development and Ed-ucation (OSDE), since 2007.

“They have made a huge contributionover the years and also assist when we havewrestlers who need to take part internation-ally and we have a shortfall.”

Marno, who lived with his grandmotherand aunt in Fisantekraal, has since obtainedhis Diploma in Coaching Science at the Ex-ercise Teachers Academy in Stellenbosch.

Further training“We have about eight wrestlers who have

stayed with us since 2006 and they all comefrom rural areas. These wrestlers have beentrained as coaches and we use them to coachthe other children in the communities,” saidBosse. “We had three wrestlers who repre-sented South Africa at the CommonwealthGames in Glasgow in 2014. One of our girls,Norma Gordon from Klipheuwel was thefirst junior woman to win a medal at the Af-rica Championships.”

Tiny van Schalkwyk, general manager atDurbell Pharmacies, says it’s an honour forthem to be involved with the OSA and OSDE.

2,1 miljoen.

Die 6de uitga-we van dieHandwoordeboek vandie Afrikaanse Taal verskyn op15 Julie by Pearson

A brave suffererwithMultiple Sclerosis(MS) recently walked along the N1from Bethulie to Cape Town.

A special welcoming ceremony was heldforAnnekeOlivier (44) at a restaurant in theWillowbridge Shopping Centre in Bellvilleafter her arrival in the Cape after she walk-ed a full 875km in about 20 days. The news was related by Non Smit, chair

of MSSA, who supported Anneke, whocomes from a small Free State town, on herlong journey.“When Anneke first told her husband Eu-

gene that she wanted to walk from her hometown Bethulie in the Free State to CapeTown, he thought shewas joking,” saysNon.Anneke is a full-time nursing sister in her

home town and was diagnosed with MS in2010.Non says this does not prevent her from

living her days “to the full in service of oth-ers”.“I want to live a normal life and don’t

think of myself as sick,” says Anneke.Anneke has always been a keen athlete

and has completed the Cape Argus CycleTour nine times and swam theMidmarMilein 2011.Anneke set out from Bethulie on 25 April,

accompanied by two friends, Marina Vogesand Tania Groenewald, says Non. She addsJaco Visagie of Kroonstad drove the accom-panying support vehicle sponsored by the

Association for Persons with Disabilities inthe Free State (APD).MaywasMSmonth andAnneke’s aimwas

to create awareness and raise funds for thefoundation in support of the very importantwork they do among people living with MS.“All along her route she paid visits to MS

patients, educated and informed the public, handed out brochures at town clinics, toroad workers, and at petrol stations alongthe N1.“Anneke is on an Interferon treatment

which she administered herself during thewalk. The treatment is a disease modifyingdrugwhichkeeps relapses at bay,” saysNon.Both Marina and Tania are healthy.“Anneke had faithfully practised her road

work for a few months before the long walk.Developing blisters during the preparationtime inevitably resulted in her using thetreadmill for a while instead,” says Non.They walked about 45km a day in three

shifts, starting at 08:00 every morning, witha 30-minute breakfast break after the firstshift, and a lunch break before the final shiftof the day.En route, people would stop by with small

talk while others would stop to enquireabout the reason for the walk, Non says.Anneke arrived in Cape Town just a little

over a month ago.Anneke’s next adventure will be sky-div-

Three of Durbanville Hills’ wines from theirreserve Rhinofields range have won awardsat the 2015 Sommelier Selectionwine compe-tition.The 2012Rhinofields Chardonnay took the

trophy in the “full and rich” category whilstthe 2014 Rhinofields Sauvignon Blanc and2013 Rhinofields Noble Late Harvest wereeach shortlisted in the categories “elegantand classy” and “sticky’s” respectively. With just under 400 wines judged blind by

two panels consisting of three sommeliers

eachwith one associate, the wines were eva-luated not by grape varietal but more by thestyle and price point.According to organisers, the aim of the

competition is to find thebest, most dynamicwines available on the market, judged ontheir food appropriateness. The competition, a first for the SouthAfri-

can wine industry, is judged solely by a pa-nel of SouthAfrican sommeliers and in cate-gories, although unusual, which reflect thedesign of a wine list for a restaurant and ho-

tel. These include house wines, fresh crun-chy whites, voluptuous rich reds as well asbeer, cider and international wine.Delighted cellar master Martin Moore

said the reserve range from DurbanvilleHills truly reflects the unique terroir of thearea.

From the first moment the musicof Tony Cedras’s latest albumLove Letter to Cape Town touch-

es you, his love for this part of theworld is evident. At the launch of the new release in

the city last week the multi-instru-mentalist spoke with passion aboutthe love and joy he experienced mak-ing this album. The roots of the album are in his

youth, growing up in Elsies Riverplaying with some of the best on thelocal scene like Pacific Express, Spir-its Rejoice andhis legendaryEStudioproject.

Musical heroesThat journey then took him over-

seas where he became a sought-aftersessionmusician, eventually touringand recording with Paul Simon formany years.“This album is my plea for Cape

Town to rediscover its soul, its es-sence and beauty that has alwaysbeen in my being wherever I was inthe world,” he says.“I grew up in an era where music

was a major motivation for so manypeople who were living under apart-heid.“We were oppressed, there was

poverty, there was crime, but from theseareas came a myriad of musicians whosemusic inspired a generation of poets, ac-tors, artisans, teachers, and most impor-tantly activists who fought, and eventual-ly won against that evil regime.“Now those musical heroes who in-

spired our youth have been neglected and

rejected.Where are the radio stations whoare paying tribute to the messages of ourelders.“Ournewgenerationcanstill learn from

their music and the messages those har-monies gave us, and most of the time theydid not needs words. Their souls wereshared through the sounds of theCape that

they could create.”On this new recording Cedras

teams up with local legends like gui-tarists Steve Newman and Errol Dy-ers, but it is the input of the youngergeneration that excites him.“There is a generation that wants

to discover their true roots inmusic,”he says excitedly.“On this album it was exciting to

work with people like bassist WesleyRustin, trumpeter Darren Englishand vocalist Zolani Mahola fromFreshlyground.

Discovery“They are all part of the new gener-

ation who have hungered to makesomething more of their talent. Weneed more young people to hear thiskind of music to discover their trueCape identity.”When it comes to themodernmusic

culture on commercial radio stationsCedras feels that there is so muchmore they can do to move youngminds away from mediocrity.“We come from an era where a gov-

ernment tried to divide us accordingto the colour of our skin. Now theyare trying to divide us through “mar-keting” strategies.“This radio only plays this type of

music, that one another but in allthese circumstances it seems as ifthey are ‘ashamed’ of who we really

are.“With my ‘Love Letter’ I am pleading

with them and theworld to re-discover theharmonies that are really in our hearts.”V The album and single tracks are available onlinethrough Amazon, iTunes and Spotify. You can alsovisit www.zurichsessions.com/tonycedras for mo-re information and videos of the recording.

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

The bumper 4th of July IndependenceDay meeting at Killarney on Saturdayis a unique American themed package.

It combines the razzmatazz of Yankeetanks, FordMustangs, chromedHarleys, theStar Spangled Banner and Billy Joel’s,“she’s like a rocket on the fourth of July”,all combined in the fifth round of the PowerSeries sponsored by Wingfield Motors. As far as racing goes, the All American

one-make V8 Masters category, with carsunashamedly based on the Ford Mustang ofold being redesigned for the track and builtby Owen Ashley in his factory/workshop atKillarney, will take pride of place.Powered by modified V8 engines produ-

cing 325kW of power through the rearwheels and driven by superstars like multi-ple former SouthAfricanSuperkart champi-on Marcel Angel, sometime Supercar title-holder Richard Schreuder, Craig Jarvis, Fa-bio Tafani and Franco Donadio, the racingis almost always close and dangerous. With reigning Formula Supercar champi-

on Nick Adcock possibly absent, the door inthis category could open for young Dayne

Angel, who has been in fine form. Others towatch include Brad Wadeley, Andrew Mof-fitt and Gareth Easom. But the biggest entry and some of the best

racing can be expected in the Midas Club-

man events from front runners like specta-cular Danie van Niekerk in his WingfieldBeemer, Nieyaaz Modack (BMW), JesseHuggett (VW Jetta) and Andre Johnson (Au-di Quattro).

The rookie to watch is going to be 15-year-old Joshua Dolinschek in the Formula Libresingle seater class. Still too young to (legally)drive on public roads, Joshua was impressi-ve as he dominated the first two rounds inwhich he competed earlier this season. Ho-wever, he was well beaten by Julian van derWatt in a more powerful car at the most re-cent meeting. It will be interesting to seehow he fares during the meeting on Satur-day.At the other end of the scale, the popular

54-year-old Danie (van Killarney) Maritz isa veteran motorcyclist astride the sameGSX-R750 Suzuki that carried him to victoryin the 1987Western Province championship.Incredibly though, this super-fit rider is lap-ping even faster now than he did more than28 years ago.Aimed at the whole family, the day is also

going to include a Breakfast Run for streetlegal motorcycles, a kiddies playgroundmanned by minders and an American stylehot-dog eating contest in the clubhouse. There are 18 races for cars and motorcy-

cles on the programme, the first of which isdue off after final practise and qualifyingsessions at 10:00.

There was no mistaking the smile on Tre-vor Mahoney’s face when he birdied the18th atKuilsRiverGolf Club to claimvicto-ry in the Kuils River Classic last Wednes-day.The Pearl Valley golfer put on a classy

performance on his way to a four-under 68and a two-stroke victory on 10-under-par206 over reigning Curro SA Juniors Inter-national championAltinvanderMerweonthe IGT Cape.“This is such a bigmonkey off my back,”

said Mahoney as he hoisted the R12 000winner’s cheque sponsored by The Houseof Machines. “I came here with a very spe-cific game plan and I executed it. I feels re-ally great to get the job done again.”Van derMerwe, fromBellville Golf Club,

closed with a 67 to finish second, whileSunshine Tour champions Christiaan Bas-son (67) and Peter Karmis (68) and BolandamateurArmandtScholtz (70) shared thirdon 209.Overnight leader Matthew Kent slipped

to joint sixth on 210 after a 73 with Rhys

West (70).Mahoneymade aname forhimself on the

amateur circuit before he turned pro in2010, but lack of funds forced the SAGDBgraduate to take back his amateur statustwo years later.“I started working at Pearl Valley Golf

Estates and I competed for Boland until so-mepeople at PearlValley offered to financemy return to the pro circuit,” he explained. He promptly won the Vusi Ngubeni Qua-

lifying School in January to secure hisSunshineTour card for the 2015 season, butafter six months of missed cuts, Mahoneywas running out of patience. He entered the Kuils River Classic ho-

ping to find a way to get back on track.“The frustrating thing is that I’m not

playing poorly,” he said.“My game is solid, but I’m not scoring.

It starts wearing you down when you areplaying well and consistently, but con-stantlymissing the cut. Itmade sense tometo play the IGT Cape while the SunshineTour is on a break, because I needed to

break this streak.“I knew there would be pressure this

week because we had a really strong field.Peter and Christiaan are very experiencedand Rhys has been making waves on theSunshineTour. Therewas a bunch of otherSunshine Tour pros competing, so I knewthe pressure would be on.”Mahoney set himself two goals for the

week – to start with a red number and fi-nish in double figures.“The IGT Tour guys set the courses up

tough so amateurs can get used to what toexpect on the Sunshine Tour,” he said.“Breaking par would tick the first box.”“I had 14 birdie chances in that second

round, but I only made two,” he said. “Ikept myself in the mix because I stayed pa-tient and didn’t make mistakes.“Setting goals is very important and tic-

king the boxes has really given me a boostof confidence. I know I can turnmy seasonaround, so I just need to take this win andfeed off it in my next start on the SunshineTour.”

Cathy Carstens is the only female cyclist to beincluded in the Legends of the Pedal hall offame.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Being the only female cyclist to be in-ducted in the Legends of the Pedal hallof fame is nothing short of remarkable.

But Cathy Carstens has had a superb careerthat began back in 1984 and at the age of 52this Brackenfell resident is still on her bike, with no intention of quitting anytime soon.

“Before I started cycling I was a WesternProvince 800m athlete, but a serious knee in-jury forced me to quit and that is how I start-ed cycling,” said Cathy.

Her list of achievements reads like the per-fect script. In 1985 she set the 3000m SouthAfrican track record and won over 300 fun

rides between 1985 and 1990.In 1985 she won the mixed tandem sec-

tion of the Argus Cycle Tour. The follow-ing year she broke the Argus record forwomen bymore or less 30 minutes. “I stillremember that day, everything was justgoing very well and I can’t remember theprecise time, but I beat the record byabout half an hour. After that dream race,I won it for the next four consecutiveyears.”

After winning the national champion-ships in 1990, Cathy took a 12-year breakin which she raised her two children andstarted her own physiotherapy practicein Brackenfell where she is still workingwith top sportsmen andwomen including

Mariska Strauss, the 2014 African XCO MTBchampion, Peter-John Waterboer (SA schoolshurdler), Alicia Visser (WP tug of war), ZeekeNorris (K1kickboxer) andJonathanForlee (na-tional under-20 basketball player), to name afew.

After her absence she made a comeback atthe age of 41. Two years later, competing withthe best in the country, she showed her classby being ranked second in South Africa.

Further accolades include gold medals at theSouth African veteran championships from2007 to 2010. She took silver at the World Cupin Austria in 2005 and 2006 and gold in 2009. Atthe World Veteran UCI Road Champs in Aus-tria she claimed silver in 2005 and 2006 andwongold in 2008.

One of her proudestmoments remains heroverallWestern Province Cyclist of the Yearaward back in 2008. “What made this awardso special for me was the fact that the awardwas for both men and women. So to walkaway with that award being acknowledgedthe very best cyclist irrespective of genderwas fantastic.”

For now, there is no stopping Cathy. Sheis still active on her road bicycle and themountain bike bug has also bitten her. “Forme it is all about staying fit and healthy, andwith mountain bike events it is a differentway of seeing how beautiful our country is.

“I have overcomemany injuries inmy lifeand I have realised if you never give up ev-erything exists as a possibility.”
