“Onder by die hek het ek links gedraai omhoërskool toe te stap en Eli het saam met haarlaerskool-maatjies regs gedraai om die padaan die veilige kant oor te steek, waar ’n ver-keersbeampte soggens diens doen,” vertel sy.

“Ek dink sy moes die oggend van haar doodlaat gewees het, want ek het haar nie soos ge-woonlik by die trap gewaar nie en haar maatshet alleen vooruit gestap.

“Sy het nooit die pad alleen op die betrokkehoek oorgesteek nie.”

Die bestuurder van die bakkie is nie aange-kla nie en die Brackenfell-polisie ondersoektans ’n saak van strafbare manslag.

“Daar kan geen klagtes aanhangig gemaakword alvorens die ondersoek nie finaal afge-handel is nie,” het die polisiewoordvoerder,ao. Erica Crous, gesê.

Volgens Crous is daar verkeerskameras bydie kruising, maar slegs aan die anderkantvan Frans Conradie-rylaan in die rigtingKraaifontein.

Die begrafnis sal vandag (Woensdag) plaas-vind in Klerksdorp in die Noordwes-provin-sie, waarvandaan die Mazibuko-familie af-komstig is.

Die sosiale media het verlede week gegonssoos honderde inwoners dié kwessie be-spreek het.

Op die Brackenfell-Nuus en infoblad hetMelanie Lubbe ’n belangrike en relevantevraag geopper: “Dis tragies, maar ek won-der of hierdie tragedie kon voorkom geweeshet as verkeersmense ‘visible’ is op daardiepad. ’n Mens kan in die middag in FransConradie sit en sien hoe jaag mense op daar-die pad. Ek hoop ná hierdie kindjie se doodsal iets gedoen word om ander ongelukke tevoorkom.” George Rian Els het op sy beurtgenoem dat dit “ongelooflik gevaarlik is”om die pad oor te steek by die spesifiekekruising waar die ongeluk gebeur het. OokTanie le Roux Nel is van mening dat dié be-trokke verkeersoorgang gevaarlik is – selfsvir ’n padpatrollie-span. “Hulle kort nog ver-keerspersoneel. Al die oorgange na die skoolis gevaarlik,” het sy geskryf.

In reaksie op Lubbe se spesifieke stellingoor sigbare verkeerspolisiëring, het CarinBrynard, voorsitter van die Stad Kaapstadse portefeulje-komitee vir veiligheid en se-kuriteit, verlede Woensdag haar kommen-taar gelewer. “Daar heers ’n wetteloosheidop ons paaie en ek kan net weer eens moto-

riste maan om binne die spoedbeperkings tehou,” het sy gesê. “Daar kan onmoontlik nieten alle tye ’n wetstoepasser in elke straatwees nie. Daar is net nie genoeg verkeersbe-amptes nie,” het sy gesê.

In ’n onderhoud metTygerBurger in April2014 het JP Smith, burgemeesterskomitee-lid vir veiligheid en sekuriteit van die StadKaapstad, gesê dit is onmoontlik om te doenwat gedoen moet word in die stad met dieaantal beamptes wat beskikbaar is. Daarwas toe volgens Smith ongeveer 1 000 be-amptes te min in die departemente verkeer,wetstoepassing en metropolisie.

Volgens Brynard word die probleem ver-der aangevuur deur ’n onverskillige hou-ding en wetteloosheid. “Die howe is oorvol,wat beteken dat baie boetes afgeskryf worden oortreders hulle eenvoudig net nie meeraan die wet steur nie.”

Sy het ook bygevoeg dat wetstoepassingop die pad verskerp sal word met bykomen-de spoedlokvalle.

Carin Brynard, wyk 102 se raadslid, hetná die berig van TygerBurger verledeWoensdag op Netwerk24 verskyn hetoor die tragiese ongeluk waarin ’n 11-ja-rige meisie van Brackenfell gesterf het,die volgende skrywe aan die koerant ge-rig:

“Dit het onder my aandag gekom dat daargroot verwarring heers onder die lesersvan genoemde berig oor my kommentaaraan die media ten opsigte van die hartseertragedie wat vroegoggend afgespeel het toedie kindjie op pad skool toe was.

“Ek wil dit duidelik stel dat dit geensinsmy bedoeling was om daarop te sinspeel datdie bestuurder van die voertuig homselfskuldig gemaak het aan enige oortredingvan watter aard ook al nie – en het dit ookduidelik uitgespel, ook per SMS aan diejoernalis ná ons gesprek en ons was eensdaarmee. Ek voel uiters jammer vir beidepartye (die oorledene en bestuurder) en hulfamilies en my gebede is met hulle.

“Die breër strekking van my kommen-taar was eerder dat alle rolspelers wat open-bare paaie gebruik, wetsgehoorsaam moetoptree en dat dit belangrik is ook vir skool-kinders om die padreëls te leer ken en toete pas. Dit is ’n feit dat die verontagsamingvan verkeersreëls eskaleer (ook deur voet-gangers), soos mense wat nie meer stop bystopstrate, selfs rooi robotte, wat die spoed-grens oorskry en wat nie kruis op die kor-rekte plekke nie. Die Stad word oorval metversoeke vir spoedwalle in menige strate,wat my stelling bevestig.

“My kommentaar was slegs daarop gemikom mense te waarsku wat die negatiewe ge-volge kan wees wanneer padoortredingsplaasvind en het nie na ’n spesifieke per-soon of voorval verwys nie. Dit was slegs ge-mik op bewusmaking.

“Ek persoonlik voel nie dat die berig mis-leidend is nie, maar indien enigeen dit soervaar het, spreek ek my spyt hieroor uit.”

A woman was raped and then robbedunder the bridge on Bill Bezuiden-hout Road that spans the N1 in Bell-

ville.The incident happened early on Monday

morning as thewoman, a nannywhoworksin the Stellenridge area, was on her way towork.“The victim was walking on Bill Bezuid-

enhout Road when an unknown man sud-denly appearedbehindher, threateningherwith a knife,” said Bellville police spokes-person Captain Fienie Nimb.“He made her walk toward the bridge

crossing the N1. There he searched her, de-manding money, which she did not have.”Nimb said he then continued to rape her

at knife point, took her cellphone and wed-ding ring, and walked with her towards theN1. “They got through the broken fence,”Nimb said. The woman ran off. As she ranalong the N1, she saw a Law Enforcementvehicle, which she stopped,” Nimb said.“She was then brought to the police sta-

tion for victim support and to open a crimi-nal case of rape. The suspect mentioned tothe victim that he is an ex-convict,” Nimbsaid. Pieter Blaauw, Bellville’s CPF chair-man, told TygerBurger the man had beenin prison for seven years. This informationwas shared with him by the victim’s em-ployer.

“I want to take this matterup with Bellville station com-mander Brigadier Andre vanDyk. This is the third seriousincident occurring at thisspot,” Blaauw said.“About three years ago a

schoolboy was assaulted andstabbed with a knife at thispoint. Then, last year, theBlomtuin neighbourhoodwatch chairman was attackedwith a brick.“When he confronted people

he found under that bridge,they actually threw a brickagainst his head, causing himto endup inhospital. Now this.Something needs to be done,”Blaauw said.

Ons trek die sanger vas net voor sy haarwenkbroue laat lig in ’n plaaslike sa-lon. Wanneer Karin Kortjé hoor ons

wil oor Heavenly Haven praat, soek sy blit-sig ’n stil hoekie.

Karin is dalknet sobekendaswat syberugis, maar een ding is verseker: sy het ’n hartvir die weerloses aan wie die lewe te hardpluk, of gepluk het.

“Ek werk met kinders – welsynkinders,weggooikinders, mishandeldes,” praat symaklik oor haar ambassadeurskap by diewelsynsorganisasie Heavenly Haven inDelft.

Dié organisasie word bestuur deur ’n en-kelma, Heather Groenewald, wat self na vyfkinders omsien – twee van haar eie, en driewat onder haar pleegsorg en liefde gedy.

Die kinders kom van deesdae van oral oor,sê Karin, maar die meeste is van daardieselfde gebied wat so stowwerig en vaal soosmuwwe brood onder die swaarkry langs dieStellenbosch-pad lê.

Trek swaarKarin sê Heavenly Haven trek swaar. “Dis

nie maklik nie.“Ek probeer vir hulle hulp inkry,” sê Ka-

rin, “en deur my werk so ’n bietjie blootstel-ling aan die organisasie te gee.”

Heavenly Haven word vanuit ’n hop-huisen ’n lendelam wendyhuis bestuur. “Maarmet die liefde wat Heather vir die kindersgee wat na haar verwys word, skort daarniks,” sê Karin.

“Hier is daar ’n groot nood. Syhet ’n passievir die plek en doen al 10 jaar lank dié werk,al is sy net drie jaar geregistreer.

“Sy doen álles uit haar eie sak. En dít wilgedoen wees, want sy is werkloos,” vertelKarin.

Net wanneer die storie té wanhopig wil

klink, strooi Karin ’n bietjie “towerstof” oordie grysheid. Haar stem – daardie kragtigestem wat haar die Idols-titel laat wen het,gaan vir dié kinders sing.

Op 27 en 28 Oktober hou sy en ’n paar vandie land se bekendste name ’n groot konsert,waarvan Heather se organisasie en dié kin-ders ’n persentasie van die opbrengs sal kry.

“Op 27 November vier ek die tiende jaarnadat ek Idols gewen het. Dis een van die re-des hoekom ek ’n herdenkingskonsert gaanhou,” sê sy.

Wat die konsert ook spesiaal maak, is datbekendes soos Marc Lottering en Alistair

Izobel, wat as seremoniemeesters gaan op-tree, onder vele andere besluit het om in diehoogseisoen van die musiekbedryf hul dien-ste teen ’n “hengse afslag” vir die konsert tebied.

KunstenaarsVan die ander kunstenaars wat gaan op-

tree, sluit in Loukmaan Adams, Bianca laGrange,ClairePhilips, LondonLouwenNurAbrahams. Die groot konsert word beplanom in die His People-kerk in Goodwood ge-hou te word, sê Karin.

Deel van dié program sluit ook in ’n talent-

soektog, met twee blink skolesterre wat opdie aand met die bekendes sal optree, sê sy.

“Ons gaan vir hulle Kersfees-pakkies enskryfbehoeftepakkies gee; hul nood is groot,dié kinders is erg minderbevoorreg,” sê Ka-rin.

“Hulle het nie eens warm water nie, daaris geen geiser nie. Kinders het nie net emosi-onele warmte nodig nie. Die wendyhuis hetnie eens ’n tapyt nie, maar Heather het so’n passie ... dis aansteeklik.”

Leerders van ’n Bellvillese skool kon opVrydag 24 Julie húl omgee wys deur ’nwarm bord kos aan minstens 600 mensete lewer.

Die leerders is van die Westcliff-vaar-digheidskool se jeugklub.

’n Maand gelede neem myman sy selfoon en verpand ditby dieselfde winkel. Toe hy syfoon gaan haal, het hy dit ooknie nagegaan nie en kom eersby die huis agter dat daarlelike skrape op die skerm is enlater die dag ook dat dieluidsprekers foutief is. Dieselfoon was slegs twee maandeoud en in uitstekende toestand.

Hy kon dit egter nie terug-neem nie, want hulle soueenvoudig net sê hy kon dit oppad huis toe beskadig het.

So wees maar versigtig as jyjou goed verpand by die winkel,omdat hulle nie versigtig metjou goed werk nie. Dit is mosnie hulle s’n nie. Baie swakvan hulle. Ek’s nogal teleurge-steld.

New technology and vast improve-ments to the availability of ticket is-suing stations will make life for com-

muters at the Bellville Railway Stationmuch easier.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott saidthere are currently five ticket windows atthe Bellstar Junction shopping hall.

With recent improvements, the new sta-tion facility now boasts seven additionalticket selling windows, with the potentialto accommodate nine, she said.

“All these windows are facing the con-course with ample queueing space – multi-ple times more than the current queueingspace at Bellstar Junction – without inter-fering with pedestrian movement throughthe concourse.

“An additional defaulters’ ticket windowis provided beyond the access control pointfor commuters arriving at the Bellville sta-tion without a valid train ticket.

“At the defaulters’ ticket window, queue-ing space to buy a ticket is provided out ofthe way of pedestrian movement. The oldstation set-up did not allow for a defaulters’ticket window,” she said.

The MetroPlus subway was enhancedwith five speed-stile gates and a by-passgate.

Scott said the design and equipment weredeveloped for large numbers of commuters.

“It is believed the new design and equip-ment will improve operational efficiencyand train commuters should spend lesstime buying a ticket, access platformsquicker and easier and should have a sig-nificant improved train experience.”

The ticket windows at the Bellstar Junc-tion shopping hall will remain operational.

“Commuters will still have the option tobuy a ticket on the subway’s side, and donot need to go to the new station buildingand walk back to the metro side to accessthe platforms,” she said.

Esterdamus stares into the jug of milk andsees an avalanche of images – she can hardlywrite quick enough.

There shallbe no apartheid, no fascism, no communismand none of the other nasty ‘isms’ that dividethe masses. GeorginaWBushwill never say ‘Wespent a lot of time talking about Africa, as we

should. Africa is a nation that suffers from in-credible disease’.

Esterdamus puts down her pen and smiles.Whatever all this means, she hopes someonewill see it for what it is.

If you keep struggling with some of the following symptoms for longer than about a monthyou could have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD):• The trauma keeps frightening you by repeated memories or nightmares

• You try hard to avoid thinking about the trauma and you avoid people, places or situationsthat remind you of the trauma

• You have negative changes in your thinking or feelings, like blaming yourself, having strongnegative beliefs about yourself or others, feeling cut off or distant from other people

• You become sensitive for danger so you fight more than before, you are always on thelookout for possible danger, you struggle to concentrate and you sleep poorly

You could take part in the Shared Roots study if:• You have been diagnosed with PTSD OR• You think you may have PTSD based on the

symptoms listed above

What’s involved?You travel in to Stellenbosch University medicalcampus next to Tygerberg hospital for 3 visitsAt the visits we ask you questions about your health,we do physical exams, we take bloods (likecholesterol and glucose) and we do a brain scanAfter each of the visits we give you money fortravelling costsAfter your visits you will get a report about yourgeneral health (like blood pressure and cholesterol)

The sun was out, fun was had and atthe end of the day, a group of eightmen walked away with a winner’s

cheque of R5000.What started as an innocent kick-about

between fellow students on the “dell”, out-side the University of the Western Cape’s(UWC) cafeteria in 2004, has become amuch anticipated “kings of UWC” event.

The annual event pits students, alumnianduniversity associates in a 5-a-side soc-cer tournament.

The day reinforces the bonds betweencurrent and past students as 16 teams bat-tle it out.

In the end, “S squad” rose to the chal-lenge, beating all comers to the title.

Chad Hare, captain, could not hide hiselation.

“I can’t explain how I feel, we are justhappy that we did this together.

“We have been friends for as long as wehave been here, for six or seven years. Weall know each other through soccer, so it’sa brotherhood. We are a family.”

The team’s Fabian “Takka” Wareleytook home the Lyle Arendse player of thetournament award, named in honour ofone of the tournament’s founding mem-bers.

Hilton Stroud, one of the tournament’sorganisers, said the event was a “timewhere guys from old, who haven’t seeneach other since their time at campus,came in and met each other, braaied andsocialised.

UWC Rector Professor Tyrone Pretori-

us said it was “a fun day”.“It’s good for theuniversity. It’s good for

the university’s reputation and it says alot that people want to be associated withthe university in this way.”

Pretorius, without knowing the speci-fics of the event’s origins, praised the en-terprise shownby the founders of the tour-nament, who were chased off the originalfield at the ‘dell’ 11 years ago.

FaganMuller, Santos captain and one ofthe tournament founders, said studentsused to play for a gatsby and their drinkof choice at the Barn.

“I think that if it wasn’t for this, thenUWC’s soccer team wouldn’t be so strong.It was playing in this (tournament) that Idecided to play for the UWC soccer team,which was prosperous in the end, playingfor the universities national team.”

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Wesley Krotz is without doubt one of thevery best ice hockey players in the country,proven by the fact the Canadian ParrySound Islanders team has acquired his ser-vices.

Bearing in mind, the 19-year-old fromMilnerton was already selected to repre-sent South Africa on a senior level when hewas 15.

“Between the age of 10 and 13, I used toskate with my cousin at every public ses-sion because we enjoyed ice skating somuch. One holiday in Johannesburg, wewere skating at Northgate Ice rink and themanager approached us and asked if wewould like to play ice hockey for them.

“On our return to Cape Town, my mothermade enquiries about ice hockey and weimmediately signed up for the Learn to PlayAcademy that took place on Sunday morn-ings.

“I then joined the Penguins Club after at-tending the academy and the next monthwas selected to represent Western Provinceu.14s. That was the beginning and I neverlooked back,” says Wesley.

This young man’s accolades are astonish-ing. Representing his country in Mexico atan international tournament in 2011 he wasvoted the best u.18 player of the tourna-ment. He received this honour again in Tur-key in 2013, thus making him possibly theonly national ice hockey player to receivethe best player of the tournament award asboth a junior and senior.

“I have been fortunate to play in Mexico,Turkey, Bulgaria, Spain and New Zealand.You learn a lot by travelling overseas andseeing how other countries play.

“The sport is also much bigger overseasand played professionally. For examplethey train six days a week for up to fivehours a day.

“That is one of the reasons why I am so

excited to join the team in Canada. I wantto play well and work hard and become thebest player I can possibly be.

“It is my dream to become a professionalplayer and one day become a coach and helpgrow the sport in our country.

“The Canadian season starts on 6 Septem-ber and I will be flying out, God willing, on4 or 5 September to start this exciting jour-ney in my hockey career.”

Parry Sound Islanders is a club that at-tracts scouts from all the pro teams, andthis will give him the opportunity to get tothe next level, says Krotz.
