weld vasgevat word.

Die bestek van die wet is baie wyd en ba-

sies enigiemand wat deur enigiemand an-

ders fisiek, seksueel, verbaal of sielkundig

mishandel word, kan met behulp van di

wetgewing vir beskerming vra, het n

plaaslike prokureur, Sunl Beeselaar, ges

met die aanvang van die veldtog van 16 dae

van aktivisme teen geweld teen vroue en

kinders in Brackenfell. Die veldtog is

Woensdagoggend van stapel gestuur deur

die Brackenfell-kamer vir sakevroue in sa-

mewerking met die Brackenfell-polisie.

Beeselaar s dat geweld in die wet gedefi-

nieer word as enige vorm van n gedragspa-

troonwat vrees vir die berokkeningvan leed

teenoor n klaer inboesem. Dit sluit enige

herhaalde belediging, verkleinering, bespot-

ting of opsetlike aksie in wat die slagoffer op

enige fisieke of sielkundige vlak leed kan

aandoen. Selfs jaloesie, beskadiging van ei-

endom en ekonomiese mishandeling word

gedefinieer as geweld, s sy.

In gevalle van ekonomiese mishandeling

het oortreders byvoorbeeld sy of haar finan-

sies opsetlik weerhou in n huwelik of saam-

blyverhouding tot nadeel van die ander.

S word baie vroue wat geen ander heen-

komehet nie, genoodsaak om in gewelddadi-

ge huwelike te bly, het sy bygevoeg.

groot geloftediens

Die kultuurvereniging vir Christen-Afri-

kaners hou eersdaags n groot gelofte-

diens. Di diens sal op Dinsdag 16

Desember vanaf 11:00 in die NG Kerk

Bellville-Riebeeck in Noordstraat, Chris-

mar (agter die Chrismar Villas-aftree-

n Byeboer wat heuningbye in sy agterplaas

in Proteahoogte aanhou, is verledeweek die

leviete voorgelees deur die StadKaapstad se

wetstoepassers.

Hoewel daar nie tans n plaaslike ordon-

nansie bestaan wat die praktyk verbied nie,

kan stappe wel gedoen word indien ander

lede van die publiek die risiko loop om be-

seer te word of onregverdig blootgestel te

word aan n oorlas, s Richard Bosman, uit-

voerende direkteur van die Stad Kaapstad

se veiligheidsdepartement.

Volgens Bosman het die wetstoepassers

die byeboer, wie se naam nie bekend ge-

maak is nie, onlangs besoek en n versoek

gerig om die bye binne n week te verwyder.

Hy het glo n onderneming gegee om dit te

doen.

Ons sal die situasie fyn dophou en verde-

re stappe doen as die bye nie verwyderword

nie, s hy.

n Inwoner, Joos Roelofse, is al moedeloos

met die byebedrywighede op sy buurman se

eiendom in Hellingstraat.

Ons hond is onlangsweer aangeval en ek

het al n paar bysteke opgedoen sedert die

dae begin warmer word het, vertel hy.

Roelofse meen dat die bye n groot gevaar

inhouvir die kinders by die nuwehorskool

in Proteahoogte, wat volgende jaar geopen

word. Die eiendom is langs die skool.

Met die warm dae op hande raak die bye

baie gerriteerd en aggressief, s hy.

Volgens Roelofse pleit hy al maande lank

met die Stad om die kwessie aan te spreek.

Dis die Stad se hoof van gesondheid se

verantwoordelikheid om stappe te neem om

sulke gevare aan te spreek, voeg hy by.

Die burgemeesterskomiteelid, Benedicta

van Minnen, het gemeld dat daar volgende

jaar omgewingsgesondheidsordonnansies

ingestel sal word om die praktyk te verbied.

Byeboer die leviete voorgelees

In hierdie agterplaas word heuningbye aangehou. Daar kan duidelik gesien word hoe die byeboer

die korf skoonmaak.

Pieter Kunneke, wat daarvan verdink word

dat hy wapens aan n verregse groep wou

voorsien, het Woensdag vlugtig in die Blue

Downs-landdroshof verskyn.

Die 46-jarige verdagte, n gewese lugmag-

tegnikus, het in Brackenfell gewoon toe die

polisie in Augustus onwettige wapens en

plofstof in sy motorhuis gevind het.

Die ontdekking het glo gevolg n n hewi-

ge argument met sy gewese

vrou, wat na bewering die poli-

sie in kennis gestel het van die

ammunisie.

Kunneke is egter eers inOkto-

ber deur die Valke in Hoed-

spruit vasgetrek.

n Woordvoerder van die Val-

ke, kapt. Paul Ramaloko, het

aangevoer dat Kunneke se plan-

ne onderskep is voordat hy dit kon deur-

voer.

Hy het op 21 Oktober in die

Blue Downs-landdroshof ver-

skyn op aanklagte van die on-

wettige besit van wapens. Hy is

vrygelaat op borgtog van R2 000

en gewaarsku omweer op 26No-

vember by die hof aan te meld.

Die saak is weer uitgestel tot

9 Desember wanneer dit in die

Blue Downs-streekshof aange-

hoor sal word.

I

am grateful that justice has been

done. Thesemenwill think twice be-

fore they meaninglessly attack any-

one walking down the street again.

So says a relieved Jongikhaya Gwe, a Jo-

hannesburg attorney after the sentencing

of two of his three attackers.

Gwe was the victim of a vicious attack by

local armed response officers andamember

of a Brackenfell neighbourhood watch on

Good Friday, this year. (TygerBurger, 30

April).

Gwe visited Cape Town over the Easter

weekend to take part in the Two Oceans

Marathon on 19 April. He stayed with his

sister Siphokazi Hans, who lives in Protea

Heights in Brackenfell.

OnFriday 18April,Gweset off for amorn-

ing stroll in the neighbourhood at around

09:00, dressed in his Comrades marathon

jacket and running shoes.

A few minutes into his walk he was ap-

proachedbyPieter leRoux, amember of the

local neighbourhood watch on his daily pa-

trol.

Le Roux asked Gwe what he was doing

there and told him he was not allowed in

the area without permission. He then de-

manded to see Gwes identification docu-

ment, setting in motion an argument,

which led to Gwes assault.

Le Roux contacted the said armed re-

sponse officers via radio to assist himwith

a suspicious black guy. As part of the local

community policing forum safety plan, the

said companies are in permanent radio con-

tact with neighbourhood watches in Brack-

enfell, to assist where necessary.

Gwewas then accosted by the two officers

from Titanium and SJC Security who ar-

rived on the scene. Le Roux and two armed

response officers hit Gwe in the face, head

and legs with a baton and a walking stick.

Another armed response officer from

Capital Security had to intervene and Gwe

was later kept in safe custody by an officer

fromBolt Security,whilewaiting for thepo-

lice to arrive.

Two of Gwes attackers, Pieter Le Roux

and JohanMeiring fromSJCSecurity, both

pleaded guilty to the charges of assault in

the Kuils River magistrates court last

Wednesday. They were both fined R800 or

eighty days imprisonment.

The sentences were mitigated because of

a guilty plea and genuine remorse shown

by the accused.

Gwe says Le Roux approached him after

the proceedings to apologise for his actions.

He said he was really sorry for what he

did and that he had misread the situation.

Apparently the neighbourhood watch had

experienced a spike in the crime rate that

week, causing him to be unreasonably sus-

picious of anyone unknown walking

around in the area, says Gwe.

Le Roux has since been suspended from

the watch. The third assailant, Lindsey

Carelse from Titanium Security, pleaded

not guilty andwill appear again in theKuils

River magistrate B court, on 9 December,

when trial is expected to commence.

n Bejaarde man van 79 het Vrydagoggend

tragies omgekom in nmotorongeluk op die

Bottelarypad naby Hazendal-wynplaas.

Daar was twee motors en twee vragmo-

tors by die ongeluk betrokke.

Volgens ao. Erica Crous van die Bracken-

fell-polisie het die ongeluk omstreeks 09:35

plaasgevind, maar was die pad die hele og-

gend gesluit vir die polisie en noodperso-

neel om die toneel te ondersoek en skoon

te maak.

A Brackenfell company was named Cape

Chamber of Commerce and Industrys Ex-

porter of the Year last week.

The company also received the Design

Award, which is sponsored by the SAMari-

time Safety Association (Samsa).

Maverick Trading manufactures man-

hole covers, frames andother products from

polymer concrete.

This is an incredible achievement for a

company that started 14 years ago with a

staff of just six and has grown into one of

our best local producers and exporters,

said chamber president Janine Myburgh.

Maverick Tradings products are widely

used to replace steel grates and covers that

are regularly stolen for sale to the scrapmet-

al industry. They are lighter, stronger and

cheaper than the steel products they re-

place, and as they have no scrap value and

are thus ignored by thieves.

MaverickTrading is a remarkable exam-

ple of a company that solved a major prob-

lemand turned it into a profitable exporting

business, creating more than a 100 jobs in

early hours of last Tuesday morning, police

urge motorists to be cautious when travel-

ling on the N1 between Okavango and

Brighton roads.

Kraaifontein police received reports of two

incidents where motorists travelling on this

The festive season is the season for gi-

ving, while spending time with family, en-

joying ample entertainment and receiving

gifts galore.

Unfortunatelymany childrenwill not be

receiving gifts or love this festive season.

Therefore, theSpurFoundationwill coordi-

nate a national toy collection drive to put

a smile on some underprivileged childrens

faces, said Ronel van Dijk, chairperson of

the Spur Foundation.

Between 1 December and 16 January 2015

collection boxes for new and pre-loved toys

will be available at all Spur, John Dorys

and Panarottis restaurants in the northern

suburbs of Cape Town, as well as country-

wide.

In theWestern Cape the beneficiaries are

the Durbanville Childrens Home, House of

Grace, a place of safety for abandoned and

abused children, and Umnqophiso Prepri-

mary, a nursery school and aftercare cen-

tre in the disadvantaged community

The Spur Foundation runs this campaign

on an annual basis. The Toy Drive, suppor-

ted by CourierIT, Longstreet Media and

Nampak, collected 77 boxes filled with toys

in 2013.

According to a 2014 national adoption co-

alition report, there are 18,5 million child-

ren in SouthAfrica, ofwhich 5,2 million are

orphans.

Over 13 000 live in residential care facili-

ties and an estimated 10 000 live on the

streets of South Africa. And that excludes

the children that are with their families,

but in such dire circumstances where they

cannot afford basic necessities, never mind

toys, said Van Dijk.

The Spur Foundation was founded on

MandelaDay in 2012with an initialR670 000

donation from the Spur Group.

Young, director of Spectra Foundation.

We have for the last few years been very

reliant on caring and generous members of

the public to support us with unwanted

goods to make life more bearable for these

underprivilegedpeople, especially those ex-

posed to the elements every night, Young

said.

Amongst those whom the foundation

tries to assist are people affected by drug

and alcohol abuse, especially where child-

ren have to go hungry as a result of their

parents having fallen victim.

We have been able to assist many people

with necessities, as well as giving them a

means of income to care for their families.

However, with thousands jobless there

is always a great dealmore to be done, espe-

cially in settlements where there is no elec-

tricity and water and few other facilities.

The foundation is also reaching out to

new settlements where the need is endless.

We would therefore like to appeal once

again to all kind souls in the community at

this the giving time of the year to instead

of discarding their unwanted clothes, linen,

shoes, bric-a-brac to rather give us a call

and we will be happy to collect.

The fifth annualClarenceFordCharity golf

day is being played at TheDurbanville Golf

Club on Friday 5 December, and this year

the funds raised will go to the National Sea

Rescue Institute (NSRI) on the West Coast.

The first prize is participation in the He-

art 104.9 Thailand April Challenge 2015.

Over the past four yearsClarence andhis

supporters have raised over R1 million for

various charities.

The NSRI is run by over 900 highly skil-

led, unpaid volunteers who are on standby

day and night throughout the year.

The NSRI has 31 bases around the coast

4 are on inland dams, a fleet of 90 rescue

craft, 28 rescue vehicles, 10 quad bikes and

10 tractors.

The format of the golf day is a single sta-

bleford. The first tee off is at 12:30. The cost

is R625 per player.

A faulty telephone linemaybe one of the rea-

sons for the increase in invasive wasps

across the city.

Readers complained they received no res-

ponse from the citys Early Detection, Rapid

Response (EDRR) team after TygerBurger

reported on the current wasp problem (Re-

sidents warned: aggressive wasps settling

across suburbs, 5 November).

The problemhas been identified in theme-

antime, and an alternative offered to the pro-

blematic number, 021 712 1434.

Ulricke Irlich, project manager at the

EDRR, said their telephones lines were

down due to cable theft.

She said this had the effect that the phones

simply rang, so people think we are not an-

swering.

Please can people email us at edrr@cape-

town.gov.za? she said.

It looks like Telkom will not replace the

lines, so we are trying to make alternative

arrangements, but this is taking time.

The two invasive wasp species have seen

a city-wide warning issued, especially in

Bellville, Durbanville, Brackenfell, Kraai-

fontein and Kuils River areas, but residents

from as far afield as Langa, Khayelitsha and

the sourthern suburbs have also complai-

ned.

The culprits are the European paper wasp

(Polistes dominula) and the German wasp,

or yellow-jacket (Vespula germanica).

These species kill off indigenous honey

bees and the German wasp is known to be

aggressive when disturbed.

After taking out my car license

I forgot to display it on my

window. When I saw a traffic

officer writing out a fine, he

explained that there were two

amounts on it R500 if your

license lapsed or R300 if you

took it out and did not display

it.

So its two weeks later and I

want to pay it. I first try the

internet, as fines can be paid

via Absa. The only problem is

there is no reference number

on the fine, so the payment

will not go through.

I then go to Absa, where the

cashier tells me that the

Traffic Departments system is

offline and I have to wait for a

second letter through the SA

Post Office.

No problem. So I go off to

the Traffic Department in

Durbanville, where I am told

that they can only take the

R500 payment, not the R300

one. This can only happen at

the Parow Traffic Department.

I then called the main

number, where I was told that

the fine has not been captured

so I cant pay it.

Why issue fines if they know

that the offender cant pay it?

bite back (TB SMSes, 26

So many who regard them-

selves as dog lovers forget

that while they are at work,

away for a weekend or at

times even a week, we the

lonely, old or just selfish are

subjected to the continuous sad

howling, whining and barking

from many a neglected pet.

Dog lovers often

neglect their pets

You leave home at the crack

of dawn, returning some eight

hours or more later.

The so-called pet is given

its food and then the owner is

off to bed and sleeps like a log,

never hearing the night bark-

ing. And so it is every single

day.

How many genuine loving

hours are spent with the

animal? As far as you are

concerned your dog protects

your home and the barking is

their way of communicating.

To whom, I ask?

To the phrase get a life,

have you not noticed that we

who complain about the bark-

ing are very much alive. We are

the ones who hear and are not

deaf to the sounds of an animal

in distress, just surviving a

dogs life day after day.

identifisering van die betrokke

misdadigers nie.

Die enigste persoon wat n

slegte persoon met n vuurwa-

pen kan stop, is n goeie

persoon met n vuurwapen.

Onmiddellike reaksie in n

lewensbedreigende situasie is

altyd die beste. Die polisie kan

nie altyd oral wees om jou te

beskerm nie.

Daar is wel negatiewe aspekte

verbonde aan vuurwapens,

maar die positiewe aspekte is

meer.

Want moorddadige maniakke

verkies ongewapende slagoffers.

In ons geval het n taxi vol

getuies gewys wat die meeste

Suid-Afrikaners voel wanneer

die goeie ouens terugbaklei.

Vroue word in siklusse van geweld

vasgevang, omdat hulle by n man bly ter

wille van sy status of omdat hulle nie die

vermo of selfvertroue het om na hulself

en hul kinders om te sien nie.

Op die lang duur word hul selfbeeld so

geskaad dat hulle nie in hulself glo nie;

ook nie meer vertroue het in die beeld

wat hulle na buite uitstraal nie. Hulle

verloor hul identiteit en voel hulle het

geen waarde in die samelewing meer nie.

Kinders word so mishandel dat die

sielkundige letsels daarvan vir ewig aan

hul menswees vaskleef, en baie keer die

basis vorm vir hul eie geweldsoptrede

teenoor vroue en kinders in hul volwasse

jare.

As gemeenskap kan ons dit eenvoudig

nie meer ignoreer nie en moet ons druk

op die regering toepas om die politieke

wil te kweek om kragdadig teen geweld

en misdaad op te tree. Ook nie net wat

geweld teen vroue en kinders betref nie,

maar teen lle geweld en misdaad.

Dit is tyd dat ons nie net vir 16 dae

van die jaar hieroor standpunt inneem

nie, maar elke dag van die ander 349 dae.

Raak ons nie almal betrokke nie, gaan

di wanpraktyk net onverpoos voortduur.

Filmmaker Uga Carlinis speciality is ma-

king female-driven heroine stories and

pre-production of her latest work, the horri-

fic story of incredible heroine, rape and at-

tempted murder survivor Alison Botha,

started this week.

Carlini is a former Totius Primary andDF

Malan learner who grew up in Boston and

is now producingmovies with strong female

leads at her studio in Fish Hoek.

This project stars another Bostonite,

Christia Visser, in the lead role of the young

Alison Botha in the documentary Alison,

which is set to be filmed in January 2015 and

released in May.

The film tells the story of how Botha was

raped, had her neck slashed 17 times, was

stabbed in the stomach 37 times and disem-

boweled before being left for dead and then

miraculously survived.

One of the worst things about gender vio-

lence is the fear and shame it breeds, says

Carlini.

That is why, when the going gets really

tough, we need ordinary people of extraordi-

nary strength and courage to jolt us out of

our numbness and offer us hope. In the early

hours of the morning of 18 December 1994,

the 27-year-old Alison Botha became one

such an individual. This is her story.

Pageant celebrates special people

Anja Friendrich from Kraaifontein looks dazzling

while smiling at the audience.

Agroup of very special people came together

courtesy of the All Star Theatre in Bracken-

fell for a pageant to celebrate a different kind

of beauty.

The only difference was that the entrants

were all special needs children.

It was organised through the joint initia-

tive of Chantelle Fourie and Patricia Smit,

both from Durbanville. It was the first time

a public pageant of this nature was held in

the northern suburbs.

Entrants from across the Western Cape

took part, including learners from Snap

Academy in Durbanville, Alta du Toit, Jan

Kriel, Carel du Toit, Cher Botha and West-

cliff in Bellville.

The Sunfield Home inWellington also had

ten entrants.

The event was the brainchild of Chantelle

Fourie, whose son, Hanno Fourie, suffers

from Spinal Muscular Atrophy SMA (Type

1). She felt it was important for every special

needs child tohave theirmoment in the spot-

light.

Every child received a sash and a gift for

their participation as theyare allwinners,

said Fourie.
