CHIMES The chimes call us to silent readiness.

PRELUDE Pavane Peter Warlock

PASTOR’S GREETING, INTRODUCTIONS, AND LIFE OF THE CHURCH

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 23 L: Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil;

for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me. P: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. L: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. P: And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. L: Let us worship God!

HYMN Come People of the Risen King Getty/Townend (See music in bulletin)

PRAYER OF CONFESSION “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” We are not always that willing to love one another, Especially when we decide that others have wronged us for whatever reasons. We hold grudges rather than confront our supposed aggressors. We talk about them rather than to them. As Judas betrayed Jesus we continue to deceive the risen Christ. When we partake of the Lord’s Supper the table is not yet spread with good will. Forgive our reluctance to humble ourselves and wash us anew with the waters of new life.

(Silence is kept for personal confession)

Amen.

DECLARATION OF PARDON L: As Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, we are washed anew with the waters of

our baptism. As we have died with Christ in a death like His, we shall arise to new life in a resurrection like His. Therein lies our assurance:

P: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

GLORIA PATRI Hymn #581

Glory be to the Father And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end – Amen, Amen.

PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES, GIFTS, AND COMMITMENTS

DOXOLOGY Hymn #606 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING: John 10:1-10 (NRSV, Pew Bible p. 872)

1 "Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in

by another way is a thief and a bandit. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of

the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls

his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he

goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 They will not

follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of

strangers." 6 Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what

he was saying to them. 7 So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate

for the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not

listen to them. 9 I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and

go out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that

they may have life, and have it abundantly.

SERMON Voice of the Thief Rev. Dr. Sue Marie Baskette

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH From a Declaration of Faith Presbyterian Church (USA)

Jesus was dead and buried, but God raised him from the dead. The risen Lord appeared to his followers. They recognized him as their Master who had been crucified. Before Jesus left them, he commissioned them to proclaim to all people the good news of his victory over death, and promised to be with them always.

We are certain that Jesus lives. He lives as God with us, touching all of human life with the presence of God. He lives as one of us with God. Because he shares our humanity and has bound us to himself in love, we have an advocate in the innermost life of God. We declare that Jesus is Lord. His resurrection is a decisive victory over the powers that deform and destroy human life. His lordship is hidden. The world appears to be dominated by people and systems that do not acknowledge his rule. But his lordship is real. It demands our loyalty and sets us free from the fear of all lesser lords who threaten us. We maintain that ultimate sovereignty now belongs to Jesus Christ in every sphere of life. Jesus is Lord. He has been Lord from the beginning. He will be Lord at the end. Even now he is Lord.

HYMN #187 Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us BRADBURY (See music in bulletin)

SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION, CONCLUDING WITH THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power

And the glory, forever. Amen.

This unattributed hymn, like many that are now meaningful to adults, was written for children and developsshepherd imagery from Psalm 23 and John 10:1–18. The tune, composed for these words, was originallynamed for the text but has come to be known by the composer’s name.

A big thank you to Trinity and Connie P. for such a quick and impactful response to the needs of the Navajo Nation. Below is a recent update from Brad Monroe of Grand

Canyon Presbytery.

We are an Easter people, and it is marvelous to witness the way our churches are stepping forward “when required to accomplish that which has never been achieved.” It is

marvelous to witness the way folks in Grand Canyon have stepped forward to raise $40,000 (or more) in cash and in-kind donations for hunger relief on the Navajo Nation. It is marvelous to witness the way churches have sponsored “Drive through Blessings” that

have gone on for three hours. It is marvelous to witness the ferocity with which our churches on the front lines of justice advocacy have found new and creative ways to

protect our most vulnerable populations. It is marvelous to be the Church today—don’t ever let someone tell you otherwise.

From the Stewardship Team…The Meaning of Stewardship

Jennifer Garber: Stewardship is a word that’s often misunderstood...it’s not just blessing the church with financial support. It also means sharing your time and spiritual gifts to connect with your church family and make a difference.

Barb Poland: The meaning of stewardship for me is my Time, Talents, and Gifts given to God through helping others and my giving of gifts to Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Donna Sprague: Because everything I have is Yours, I will seek Your glory in every financial decision. I want my generosity to result in gratitude and thanksgiving to You, not to me.

Carole Vandersteeg: Stewardship, to me, means supporting our church family and vibrant ministries while caring for our beautiful sanctuary and church campus.

Dwayne Warrick: Stewardship, to me, means cheerfully giving back for all the blessings I and my family have received by gifting my time, talent, at least a biblical tithe from our earnings, and a second tithe from our final estate. Tom Benson: Think of all the good things the Church does for each of us personally, for our community and the world. As a Christian realize that you are faithfully honoring God with your financial support of all those things. Greta Stromberg: Stewardship means to be a good steward of what God has blessed me with. I like the reference from Genesis “to serve the garden in which we have been placed.” Trinity is my spiritual garden to help tend and grow through my offerings of stewardship.

You are invited! Trinity’s Ruth Circle of Presbyterian Women is creating a woven wall hanging for the sanctuary. It will be displayed, bringing color and joy to our sanctuary, during various seasons of the church year.

The women are entering into a study called “Into the Light: Finding Hope through Prayers of Lament.” This is a study that takes a look at the Hope which is woven into our psalms and other words of Scripture. Hope and healing in our lives, when we are in the midst of difficult times and circumstances, is found as we turn to Scripture. Looking to our Scripture we discover that an approach to our journey of healing during exasperating situations is often begun with lament. “Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help …” (Psalm 28:2). Lament leads us to remember God and God’s promise. Lament leads us to Hope. “As Christians, hope is not just an emotional response or an attitude of pie in the sky. Hope implies movement: both God’s inherent movement toward justice and our movement toward God.”1 The wall hanging will be crafted from submissions of material with a prayer, a quote, your favorite Bible verse, your own psalm or poetry to God, or other meaningful words. You may even simply submit material with nothing written in your own hand. Perhaps you would like to submit a piece of material that carries its own sentimental language quietly to God from your heart. Please know that the written words that you share on your fabric submission will not appear as readable text in the finished product. All writing will be blended into the weave and will become the invisible prayers, love, and words of faith with which it is made. If you would like to contribute to this woven wall hanging, please contact Mary B. via email at [email protected]. She will be weaving our prayers together into a beautiful new tapestry. She asks that you leave the fabric in one piece so she can tear the material into the sizes needed for weaving the piece. The color and pattern on the fabric as well as the type of material are totally your choice. A great place to begin searching for a piece of material might be an old pillowcase or sheet.

CARE TEAM MISSION STATEMENT: To foster caring relationships within our church family as we hold each other up in prayer, encourage one another with phone calls, greeting cards, prayer shawls, home and hospital visits as well as acts of kindness for those in need such as bringing over a meal, help with grocery shopping or giving a ride to a medical appointment. our assistance!! Contact the church office: 445-4536 ext. 113, Charlene: 771-8845 or 273-6093, or Charlie: 925-0057.

PER CAPITA - As Presbyterians, we agree to participate in the life of the wider church by serving Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly. One of the ways we do this is through

our Per Capita apportionment which is how we mutually share the cost of coming together to discern the Spirit's leading for the future. Each member is responsible for their share of this cost. The Presbytery of Grand Canyon approved the 2020 Per Capita apportionment at $37.35 per member. Per Capita gifts should be made payable to Trinity and will be forwarded on to the Presbytery.

PASTOR SUE MARIE'S EMAIL: When corresponding with Pastor Sue Marie by email please double check what email address you are using. Please use the [email protected] address. There is another email address being used that is no longer active. Using an address other than the [email protected] will result in lost correspondence - and we do not want that happening. Thank you so much for your attention to this issue.

THE PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY meets the second Thursday of each month, at 1:00 PM in The Family Room at church. Join us if you knit or crochet or would like to learn! Contact Charlene (928-771-8845) if you would like to receive a prayer shawl; we present them to our members who are welcoming a new baby, graduating high school, turning 90, or feel in need of the comfort of a prayer shawl.
