    PRELUDE On Jordan’s Stormy Banks arr. Lyndell Leatherman

    PASTOR’S GREETING, INTRODUCTIONS, AND LIFE OF THE CHURCH HYMN #147 The First Nowell English Carol (See music in bulletin)

    CALL TO WORSHIP based on Ephesians 1

    L: To the Father who has given us every spiritual blessing in Christ. P: We give praise and glory L: To the Son through whom we have redemption,

    forgiveness, and the riches of God’s grace. P: We give praise and glory L: To the Spirit that seals us in His promise,

    the guarantee of our inheritance until we possess it. P: We give praise and glory. L: Come, let us worship God!

    PRAYER OF CONFESSION God, your true light has come into the world, blessing all upon whom it shines. Hope, peace, joy and love are ours through the Incarnate Word. And yet we languish, O God. We do not dance your praises; we do not join in merry laughter or holy pleasures. Our mourning is like ash in our mouths, and sorrow chokes the words of delight we wish to profess. There is no peace in our hearts. We do not see the promises of the prophets fulfilled.

    Open us to the blessings that surround us, that we may again be moved to praise you, God of blinding light and gentle power.

    (Silence is kept for personal confession)

    Amen

  • DECLARATION OF PARDON L: God’s might is inscrutably contained in the vessel of a human baby, and God’s

    grace is unleashed upon a weary, broken world. You, too, are vessels of God’s spirit, recipients of God’s grace and partners in Christ’s reconciling work. Be at peace; in Christ you are made whole once more.

    P: Alleluia and Amen. GLORIA PATRI Hymn #579 Glory be to the Father And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end – Amen, Amen.

    BLESSING OF COMMUNITY PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES, GIFTS, AND COMMITMENTS OFFERATORY In Holy Communion Hodges/Dearle

    arr. Gilbert M. Martin

    DOXOLOGY Hymn #592 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

    PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE READING (NRSV): Matthew 2:1-12

    1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:

    6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

  • for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

    7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

    SERMON A Year in Review Through the Eyes of Isaiah Rev. Brad Munroe HYMN #151 We Three Kings of Orient Are John Henry Hopkins, Jr. (See music in bulletin) CONFESSION OF FAITH The Nicene Creed

    We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

    We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

    We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

  • who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

    The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving L: The Lord be with you. P: And also with you. L: Lift up your hearts. P: We lift them to the Lord. L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P: It is right to give our thanks and praise. L: Holy God, we praise You. Let the heavens be joyful, and the earth be glad. P: We bless You for creating the whole world, For Your promises to Your people Israel, And for Jesus Christ in whom Your fullness dwells.

    Born of Mary, He shares our life. Eating with sinners, He welcomes us. Guiding His children, He leads us. Visiting the sick, He heals us. Dying on the cross, He saves us. Risen from the dead, He gives new life. Living with you, He prays for us.

    With thanksgiving we take this bread and this cup And proclaim the death and resurrection of our Lord. Receive our sacrifice of praise. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us that this meal may be A communion in the body and blood of our Lord. Make us one with Christ and with all who share this feast. L: Unite us in faith, encourage us with hope, inspire us to love, That we may serve as Your faithful disciples Until we feast at Your table in glory. We praise you, eternal God, Through Christ Your Word made flesh, In the holy and life-giving Spirit,

  • Now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread

    The Lord Jesus, on the night of His arrest, took bread, And after giving thanks to God, He broke it, And gave it to His disciples, saying: Take, eat. This is My body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.

    The Cup

    In the same way He took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant sealed in My blood, Shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of Me.

    Blessing of the Elements

    (Prayers of intercession are offered.)

    The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.

    Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

    On earth as it is in heaven.

    Give us this day our daily bread;

    And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

    And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

    For Thine is the kingdom and the power

    And the glory, forever. Amen.

    Communion of the People (You may partake of the elements.)

    Unison Prayer after Communion Loving God, You graciously feed us, we who have received these holy mysteries, with the bread of life and the cup of eternal salvation. May we who have received this sacrament, be strengthened in Your service; we who have sung Your praises tell of Your glory and truth; we who have seen the greatness of Your love see You face to face in Your kingdom. For You have made us Your own people

  • by the saving death and resurrection of Your Son our Lord and by the life-giving power of Your Sprit. Amen

    THE FIRST NOWELLIrregular

    “Nowell” is the English form of the French “noel,” a shout of joy formerly used at Christmas (as in Chaucer’s“Franklin’s Tale”), a clue that the word is older than its first printing. It may have Latin and French rootsrelated to “born” (natus / né) as well to “news” (nova / nouvelle).

    8.8.8.6 with refrain

    Although Christians had begun by the 2nd century to speak of these visitors from eastern countries(Matthew 2:1–12) as “kings,” perhaps because of passages like Psalm 72:10 and Isaiah 60:3, it is moreaccurate to think of them as magi or astrologers, the scholars of their day.

  • STEWARDSHIP CORNER

    2021 PER CAPITA

    As Presbyterians, we agree to participate in the life of the wider church by serving Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly. One of the ways we do this is through our Per

    Capita apportionment which is how we mutually share the cost of coming together to discern the Spirit's leading for the future. Each member is responsible for their share of this cost. The Presbytery of Grand Canyon approved the 2021 Per Capita apportionment at $38.51 per member. Per Capita gifts should be made payable to Trinity Presbyterian Church (TPC) and noted in the memo line of your check or online payment. Your Session

    has authorized full payment of TPC’s 2021 apportionment and appreciates your prompt payment of your share to avoid a budgetary shortfall in the new year.
