Principal CONNECT Mrs Cheryl Bartel

It gives me great pleasure to announce the new members of our executive leadership team who will commence their role in Janu-ary 2016. The College has taken the time to undertake a scheduled review of our current leadership structure, consider the recom-mendations and advertise accordingly. Joining the current Principal, Cheryl Bartel and Business Manager, Darren Oborne will be Travis Wiese (Deputy Principal), Sharne Lane (Head of School Primary) and Joshua Grieger (Head of School Secondary). A short pro-file of the new team can be found on our website http://www.tlc.vic.edu.au/news-events/upcoming-events I ask you to keep our new executive leadership team in your prayers as they transition from their current role to the exciting jour-ney ahead. I would also take this opportunity to thank the current leadership team for their commitment to their role and their dedication to the College. I draw your attention to the Australian privacy principles as they applies to schools. Our privacy policy is on our website http://www.tlc.vic.edu.au/our-publications A number of our parents have not given permission for their child’s photo to be used in publi-cations or on the web and this request must be respected. The privacy policy has an impact on parents who attend college events taking photos of children other than their own. If those photos are then published on facebook or other forums especially if they are not private and/or the children identified as Trinity students and these actions are without the permission of the individuals then this is a breach of the privacy act. We are currently reviewing our Healthy Eating Policy which was written in 2007 and requires updating to reflect current activities and practices. It will cover our policy in areas such as healthy snacks and lunchboxes, healthy rewards, healthy eating on camps and excursions, treat days, fundraising and so on. By now parents with students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will have received their child’s NAPLAN results. Explanation documents accom-pany the result sheet. Should you have any queries please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance. Our teaching and learn-ing leader, Mrs Di Buffon is currently downloading the college’s data and analysing the results. At the next PTFA meeting we will discuss a time when Di might present to parents, whether that might be a separate evening or as part of a PTFA meeting. Stay tuned. Life can be a roller coaster ride, full of twists and turns and upas and downs. We can sometimes try to convince ourselves that our life is full of meaning by saying, ‘I must be leading a fulfilling life because I’m always so busy’. Take time out. Consider what is of value to you. What or who is the focus of your life? What role does God play in your life? Sometimes you need to take yourself out of the hurly-burly of life and sit quietly to listen what God is saying to you. In Luke 10:38-42 we read the story of Martha and Mary. Martha was upset over all the work she had to do while Mary sat at the feet of Christ and listened to his words. The Lord said to Martha when she complained, “Martha, you are worried over so many things, but just one is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing and it will not be taken from her.” We pray, Lord Jesus, to help us to take time out and listen to you.

Blessings

Cheryl

Canberra Bound!

We visit our local Churches The year 2 students visited the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the Mildura Church of Christ to explore the question, 'Why is God's house special?' At each church the pastors (both called Andrew!) shared many interesting facts about churches and about the different parts of church buildings. Students will use this information to compare the two churches and form the next stage of their inquiry as part of their Christian studies curriculum.

Trinity year 10 students accompanied by Ms Clisby-Weir, Mrs Hughes, Mr Wilson and Miss Scholar, journeyed by bus to Canberra for their annual camp. While there, students visited Parliament House and sat in on question time in the Sen-ate, learnt about voting at the Australian Electoral Commission, explored the Aus-tralian War Memorial and attended the Last Post ceremony, engaged in some challenging projects at the Science Cen-tre and toured the Australian Defence Force Academy. The final day was spent skiing at the Perisher Blue Ski Resort. Students also went on an outing to the cinema and spent an evening ten pin bowling. Teachers were very impressed with how the students behaved through-out the camp. Their attitudes and man-

ners made them ex-cellent ambas-sadors of Trinity Lutheran College.

Congratulations to our students who recently successfully completed their AMEB piano exams:

Grade 1: Ivana De Maria , Lana Horvat; Grade 2: Hannah Sloane, Amber McCarthy, Timi Obatoki.

Eureka! On Wednesday August 19, the Year 5 students eagerly participated in the annual Gold-

fields Day and celebrated their learning about life on the goldfields and the Eureka Stockade. The day began with making a gold pan and mining for gold. Every now and then the police (Traps) would come along and check licences. Some of the miners would have to run to avoid arrest when they saw them coming because they had not bought a mining licence at the start of the day! Even some bush-rangers made an appearance and bailed up the miners with the aim of stealing their hard earned gold. Fortunately, the troopers were not to far away and chased them off. The miners prepared a traditional Irish stew with the help of some parents. It was delicious. It was then time for the soldiers to practice some marching. Everyone then had a go at apple bobbing. Once lunch was finished, it was time to re-enact the events leading up to the battle at the Eureka Stockade. The miners rioted and burned the Eureka Hotel after James Bentley (played by Badr) was found not guilty of the mur-der of James Scobie (played by Christian). The miners then burned their licences when prompted by Timothy Hayes (played by Jasmin). This eventuated in the great licence hunt where troopers came along and demanded to see everyone’s licences. Those who had burned their licence tried their best to evade them. The day culminated in a moving speech by Peter Lalor (played by Zoe) in which the miners set themselves up, ready for battle, behind the stockade. The troopers marched and fired their water pistols repeatedly before charging into the stockade and winning the battle. All in all, the day was a great opportunity to relive life on the goldfields and the Eureka Stockade and everyone had a lot of fun doing it!

Year 2 Invade Cowra Station Last Thursday morning, the year two students arrived at school with their suitcase, backpack, sleeping bag and toy. First we carried our suitcase over to the gazebo and placed them inside. Then we went to Miss Tonissen’s room to get our camp booklet. We decorated the front cover. After a little while, we went to get our backpack and toy and watched our suitcase and sleeping bag get loaded onto the bus and trailer. Then we lined up in one line and as we went on the bus, a teacher counted us. Mr White, Miss Tonissen and Mrs Hornsby went on the bus with us and Mr Reimers followed us with his car and trailer. The bus driver’s name was Doug. I sat next to Elia and we put our seatbelts on. Our first stop was the Junction where the two rivers meet and there we ate our recess. Some people went up the tower with Miss T and some went to play on the playground. After a little bit, we went back on the bus and Doug drove us to Wentworth where we stopped for lunch. Lara and I sat together with our teddies. When we finished our lunch, we went back on the bus and finally we arrived at Cowra Station.

Miss T broke us into four groups. Our team was called the Cool Kids. We went to our cabins to unpack. Lara, Emerson, Scarlett, Jasmin and I were in the same cabin and Scarlett slept on the top bunk. We unpacked our suitcase and sleeping bag. Miss T rang the bell and we did our first activity which was making a river with Mrs Hornsby. After our first activity, we had afternoon tea and then we made damper with Mr Reimers which was yummy. We went on a nature walk then had dinner and dessert. After dessert we went to our cabin and changed into our pyjamas and listened to stories around the campfire. We then went to the bathroom and got ready for bed and lights out was at eight o’clock. We didn’t get very much sleep!

In the morning, we got dressed and had pancakes for breakfast. We then played games with Mr White and then did Art with Miss T which was fun. All the Year Two’s went on a long nature walk with Mrs Hornsby leading the way. Charlie found a skeleton of a sheep! When we got back, we packed our bags and tidied our room and then had lunch. Doug and Mr White loaded our suitcase and sleeping bag on the bus. We got back to school just before home time. I had lots of fun and had a great time.

Students are to send their money raised and forms back to school by Wednesday 2nd September.

Sponsorship forms can be collected from Student

Administration

Year 4 Visit the Kindergarten Kids As part of their service to community year four students have visit-ed local kindergartens. They have been involved in playing games, cleaning up, preparing materials for classes, as well as reading to the children. Year 4’s will be the buddy class for next year’s Preps, so it has been a valuable preparation for the students who have been exceptional ambassadors of the college.

We helped the children cook and get ready for a special day and

my brother, Andre was at the door waiting!

By Kwame Ofosu-Debrah

I loved helping the kinder children and I would love them to come

to Trinity Lutheran College. I can’t wait to be a buddy next year.

By Ebonee Crick

When we got to the kinder, Kwame’s brother was already at the

gates! We got to play a little bit. For the rest of the day we en-

joyed reading activities and cleaning tables. At the end of the

day the kids sing a song.

By Jordan Allen

On Monday and Wednesday afternoons we have been going to

local kindergartens. We were asked to play with the younger

children, which was a lot of fun. I tried to teach them to skip. I

didn't want to leave and it was great fun.

The prep to year 2 team at Trinity Lutheran Col-lege is joining Enviroweek, a national schools’ event celebrating our positive everyday impact for our school community. From now until September 5th we will be joining in by taking action and cre-ating our online profile to share ideas with other schools and watch our collective impact grow across Australia.

Watch our progress through our Enviroweek school profile: http://www.enviroweek.org/

teams/tlc-eco-warriors/ We are doing simple actions like collecting and weighing our recess and lunch wrapper, holding a Nude Food Day, planting new seedlings in our veg-etable gardens and making recycled paper.

Enviroweek learning will be incorporated into nu-meracy and literacy as well as a range of activities connecting students with nature, improving health and classroom learning through time spent out-doors.

During Enviroweek from August 30 to September 5, we will celebrate as a community and ask for your vote in the People’s Choice Awards.

Thanks Tilley’s Furniture, Amanda & Ash-leigh Morrison, Seasons Restaurant, Kerrie Walsh & Kathy Page for their donations towards our fun filled Trivia Night.
