PASTOR’S GREETING, INTRODUCTIONS, AND LIFE OF THE CHURCH

CALL TO WORSHIP

L: Peace be with you. P: And also with you. L: Come and see the love God has given to us. P: Come and see what it means to be children of God. L: Come with this hope, that Christ’s presence is real. P: With joy, we come to see the Lord. L: Let us worship God!

HYMN #327 From All That Dwell Below the Skies LASST UNS ERFREUEN ST. DENI (See music in bulletin)

PRAYER OF CONFESSION O Holy One, we call to You and name You as eternal, ever-present, and boundless in love. Yet there are times, O God, when we fail to recognize You in the daily-ness of our lives. Sometimes shame clenches tightly around our hearts, and we hide our true feelings. Sometimes fear makes us small, and we miss the chance to speak from our strength. Sometimes doubt invades our hopefulness, and we degrade our own wisdom. Holy God, in the daily round from sunrise to sunset, remind us again of Your holy presence hovering near us and in us. Free us from shame and self-doubt. Help us to see You in the moment-by-moment possibilities to live honestly, to act courageously, and to speak from our wisdom.

(Silence for personal confession.)

Amen.

DECLARATION OF PARDON L: Now that we have let go of the pain, the bitterness, the anger of our lives, let us be kind, tender-hearted, and gentle towards each other, forgiving as God has forgiven us. P: We are God's beloved children, and will model God's grace and love in our hearts. Thanks be to God! We are forgiven! L: Let us stand and give glory to God!

GLORIA PATRI Hymn #579 Glory be to the Father And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end – Amen, Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

ANTHEM Psalm 23 Craig Courtney

The Lord, the Lord is my shepherd. The Lord, the Lord is my shepherd. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He leads me beside, beside still waters, He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness, He leads me in paths for righteousness, For His name's sake, His name's sake.

Yea though I walk through the valley, Of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and staff: they comfort me. You prepare a table before me, In the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head, my head with oil; My cup overflows.

Surely love and goodness will follow me, All the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord, Forever, forever, forever, forever, Amen, amen.

[Children & Youth excused for Sunday Classes.]

PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES, GIFTS, AND COMMITMENTS

OFFERTORY All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name Holden/Ellor

arr. Ed Hogan

DOXOLOGY Hymn #592 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

PRAYER OF DEDICATION

SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 16:1-13 (NRSV, Pew Bible p. 851)

1Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. 2So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ 3Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes. 5So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master? 6He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ 7Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ 8And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.

10“Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. 11If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? 12And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? 13No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH Rom. 8:1, 28, 38, 39 We believe there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus; for we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to God’s purpose. We are convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

HYMN #299 You Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim HANOVER (See music in bulletin)

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION, CONCLUDING WITH THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power

And the glory, forever. Amen.

INTERSECTIONS CLASS is currently studying and discussing the book, New Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton. Merton uses the Gospel parable of the sower as a metaphor for the “sowing of seeds” meant to lead to an abundant harvest in the spiritual life of his readers. The book considers aspects of Christian contemplation in 39 short chapters or "seeds" covering a diverse range of topics. All are welcome. Sundays at 9:00 AM in the Sicatuva Room.

WEDNESDAY WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP: A new group, “31 Women’s Bible Study” is a home-based ministry of Trinity here in Prescott that meets Wednesdays from 10:00 AM to Noon (August 28th-October 2nd).
