CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 95 L: O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! P: We shall come into Your presence with thanksgiving and make a joyful noise unto You with our songs of praise! L: O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker! P: For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.

    L: Let us worship God!

HYMN #451 Open My Eyes, That I May See OPEN MY EYES (See music in bulletin)

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Do not harden our hearts, O God, to the sound of Your voice. We confess we don’t listen to the word that You send. You give us Jesus, the Word of Life in our midst. We confess our delay in obeying the direction He brings. You promise the Holy Spirit, a source of counsel and power. We confess ignoring such guidance, since we do not respond. Forgive us our sin, and help us through Christ to enter the rest You have promised.

(Silence is kept for personal confession)

DECLARATION OF PARDON Romans 5:1-11 L: God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through Whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand. Friends, believe the good news: P: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. L: Let us stand and give glory to God!

OFFERTORY Prelude on "Lonesome Valley" arr. Matthew McConnell

DOXOLOGY Hymn #592 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING: John 3:1-17 (NRSV, Pew Bible pp. 863-864)

3 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by

night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for

no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” 3 Jesus answered

him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from

above.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can

one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Very

truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and

Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be

astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ 8 The wind blows where it

  • 5

chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where

it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can

these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not

    understand these things?

11 “Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet

you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not

believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended

into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as

Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that

whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in

him may not perish but may have eternal life.

17 “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order

that the world might be saved through him.

SERMON Hush, Hush Rev. Dr. Sue Marie Baskette

CONFESSION OF FAITH A Brief Statement of Faith Presbyterian Church (USA)

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, Whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving His life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

Although the refrain of this piece names all three Persons of the Trinity, the stanzas emphasize references toJesus Christ under various titles. There is also a shift in tone between the stanzas and the refrain: the formerspeak about God and the latter speaks to God.

Few petitions of the Lord’s Prayer are as difficult to pray as this one, and we would not dare to pray it if wehad to depend on ourselves rather than the example of forgiveness we are given in Jesus Christ. The shapenote tune sets these words with appropriate spareness.

From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope. Your gifts to OGHS are the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world. OGHS giving envelopes are available on the table in the narthex, or you can text the word SHARING to 56512 where it will then take you to the website where you can donate online.

One of the ways we do this is through our Per Capita apportionment which is how we mutually share the cost of coming together to discern the Spirit's leading for the future. Each member is responsible for their share of this cost. The Presbytery of Grand Canyon approved the 2020 Per Capita apportionment at $37.35 per member. Per Capita gifts should be made payable to Trinity, and will be forwarded on to the Presbytery.
