Dear Parents,

ST PATRICK’S DAY: A sea of green descended upon our school today as we celebrated St Patrick‘s Day. Classes attended Mass in the morning with Fr Anthony focussing on the person of St Patrick. In the afternoon Primary classes enjoyed time down at the Aquatic Centre whilst infant classes enjoyed some fun activities back at school. Last week each year level learnt about some aspect of St Patrick‘s life or of our school‘s history which was presented at Assembly. As teachers, we value the importance of all students gaining an understanding of St. Patrick as well as an appreciation of our school‘s long and rich history. PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS: Are being held this week for Stage 2 and Stage 3. I encourage all parents to take up the opportunity to meet with their child‘s teacher. If you have not made an appointment yet to meet with your child‘s teacher for these Stages please contact our school Office to arrange an appointment time. Next week Stage1 interviews will be conducted. MOOBALL ST AFTERNOON PICK UP: l have been notified that some parents still pick up their children by parking on the western side of Mooball St. In particular, parents walking their children in front of or between buses. This is extremely dangerous and strongly discouraged. Parents are advised in the afternoon to

park on Qld Rd or to use the pick up.

SCHOOL FEES ACCOUNTS: School Fee Accounts were sent home recently. Resource Fees are due for payment by 28th March 2015. There is a 5% on School Fees paid in full before the end of Term 1. There is no discounting on

Resource Fees or parish Facilities or Maintenance Fee.

CONGRATULATIONS: On Friday March 27th Miss Justine Powell (Leader of Pedagogy) will be getting married. On behalf of our school community we wish Miss Powell and her fiancé Kurt Bullock much happiness for their special day and into the future. Miss Powell will be on leave as of this Friday 20th March. We look forward to Mrs. Bullock‘s return to our

school at the beginning of Term 2.

PROJECT COMPASSION

The theme for Project Compassion 2015 is ―Food for Life‖. Food is essential for all life, yet many of the world‘s poorest people do not have food secu-rity. That means they live from day-to-day, uncer-tain of how to afford or how to access their next meal. Without food, the rest of life is impossible to contemplate: how can you plan for the future or educate your children when you

fear you will be hungry?

As Pope Francis says: ―It is a well-known fact that current levels of

production are sufficient, yet millions of people are still suffering

and dying of starvation. This is truly scandalous.‖

Project Compassion 2015 explores how Caritas Australia is helping the world‘s poorest people establish sustainable food, walking with them as they free themselves from the burden of food insecurity and

develop new, improved income streams for a better future.

At Mt St Patrick Primary there are many ways we can support Pro-ject Compassion. These include: donating to the Project Compassion boxes that are in every classroom, buying some Hot cross buns ($2 from every 6 pack ordered will be donated to Project Compassion) and later in the term buying raffle tickets for the Easter Raffle.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

We pray for the children preparing for their First Reconciliation. Please keep these children

in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear God, We pray that they may always celebrate the loving mercy of God in their

lives. Amen.

CHOCOLATE PASCAL LAMBS

Once again we are selling the Pascal Lambs for Easter. They are available in milk or white and cost $8.00. MINI-VINNIES REPORT Assist-A-Student One of the projects of the St Vincent de Paul Society is Assist-A-Student. This is an education scholarship aimed at break-ing the cycle of poverty. All it takes is $70 to change the life of a student, helping them to gain the education they de-serve with dignity. 100% of your gift will go to the student. Brochures are available in the school office for more infor-mation or use the website vinnies.org.au. Each year our Mini-Vinnies group assists one student using funds collected from either a fundraiser or the secret bag we pass around at our weekly meetings. YOUTH ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE Thank you to Drae Darragh and his mum for building some trellises for the gardens. We have two in the year one gar-dens and two up in the top garden as well. The Skill a Thon will be held on Friday 27th March

The Skill a thon involves all students participating in fun ‗sporting tabloid‘ activities in the afternoon. Sponsorship cards will be distributed to all stu-dents this week. The Sponsorship cards which have been distributed are filled out prior to the Skill a Thon day. All money is collected after the child completes the Skill a Thon course. Donations are gratefully accepted. All money raised will be spent on students this year. By raising money for

the school you are assisting your child‘s education.

PET PROTECTION VISIT: ‘MUNROE’: During Week 6 we met a dog called Munroe. He came to visit us

in the parish hall. We were learning all about how we should treat our pets. A kind lady was teaching us, her name was Maree. First she showed us how to keep our pets safe, how to say hello to a happy dog and how to act when approached by an angry dog. Munroe is a Bulldog. But he is very gentle. Maree asked the teachers to choose two or three people from their class to say hello and pat Munroe. She gave us some stickers and a colouring sheet. On the back of the colouring sheet it had a website that we could go on to and learn more pet protection and making sure we are safe around animals. Thanks Maree and Munroe ! STAGE 3 LITERACY ENRICHMENT: ‘BYRON BAY FILM FESTIVAL’: During the week Mr D‘s Stage 3 Enrichment group went to the Regent Cine-ma, for the Byron Bay Film Festival. We were shown 10 short films covering a variety of genre. They were all very different and sent im-

portant messages to all of us. As an example, one very emotional story ‘Horrie’, brought tears to our eyes. This dog played an important role in our war history, due to the number of lives that he saved. I loved the message that one particular film sent out. It was called ‘Karisma’ and the message it sent out was; you are who you are, you are unique, some people may be better than you at something but you also have talents that they may not have!. Every film was great, but the one with the most important message was ‘I Had a Dream’. The message was that we should not take the world we live in today for granted, for there are others who we share the planet with, that don‘t experience the world as we do. They live in a world of cold, hunger and despair. We should remember next time we want new shoes or clothes that there are people that don‘t have any. So I think there is only one word to describe that short film, powerful. I believe that everyone in the group really enjoyed going to the film festival and would love to do it again. All the films we agreed were great, but they all meant different things to each of us and sometimes brought back vivid memories. I would love to go again one day and I believe that the festival would be of value to all students, for it was truly amazing. Written by: Chloe Hillcoat—Stage 3

DIOCESAN SWIMMING CARNIVAL: As convenor of the Diocesan swimming Carnival, I was extremely proud of the Mt St Patrick representatives in the Zone team. Their behav-iour and commitment was excellent, as were their results. Congratulations to all swimmers for their contribution to the Tweed Zone winning the Paddy Dent Shield as champion zone! Special congratulation to - - Ebony Northeast who was age champion as well as breaking the 9yr freestyle record, 2 firsts and 2 seconds. - Sean Carney who was runner-up 11 yr champion placing 3 seconds - Darcy Reinke who was runner-up senior champion, winning 3 events and placing 3 se-conds. Congratulations to the following competitors who will now join the champs to compete at Homebush as part of the Diocesan squad. Elizabeth Warne (3rd), Alyssa Carney (1st & 3rd), Reef Sommerville

(1st) The Junior girls relay team were an extremely close 2nd ( Ebony, Elizabeth, Mahli and Kiana) and the senior boys relay team broke the Diocesan record in a convincing win ( Darcy, Reef, Sean and Nick Ratcliff). Unfortunately Nick has commitments to State Nippers so is unable to attend the Polding Swim, so we welcome a very excited Patrick Gray to the team. CASUARINA CUP: An extremely excited Rugby Union team participated in the Casuarina Cup last week. They won 2 games and lost one and found the day an interesting learning curve. Many thanks to David Hannah who trained and managed the team, and Liz Andrews and Kelly Gray for providing transport. GYMNASTICS: The students are currently undergoing an assessment of their gymnastics skills.
