THE working harbour of Port St Francis, home to a large fleet of squid, hake and pil-chard vessels, is a beehive of activity for lo-cals and tourists alike.

Relaxing at one of the restaurants, visitorscan watch the experienced crew off-loadblocks of frozen chokka (calamari) and net-ted pilchards, as well as how they re-ice thenumerous hake vessels.Waiting patiently to see Sally, the resident

seal, or the shy otter family looking for titbits on one of the boats, is a rewarding site. All of this contributes to the unique vibe

of Port St Francis, giving the first time visi-tor enough reason to come back again andagain. The launching of boats, loading and off-

loading of vessels, crew fixing large fishingnets and fishermen coming back with theirdaily catches are quite intriguing and fasci-nating to the visitor and holidaymaker. On the recreational side, the moorings are

filled by charter boats, deep sea fishing boatsandyachts fromall over theworld.Eco-cruis-

es, deep sea fishing expeditions or shorterbay cruises can be enjoyed from here. Themoorings are surrounded by residentialpenthouses and apartments in a Mediterra-nean building style.Often NSRI Station 21’s crew can be seen

leaving the harbour in a hurry after beingcalled out to a rescue. Before Jeffreys Bayand Oyster Bay opened their own NSRI sta-tions, Station 21 was the busiest Sea RescueStation in the country, often supporting thefishing fleet, swimmers, paddlers and recrea-tional craft.A walk on the harbour wall will give visi-

tors a different perspective of the view of thegreater St Francis. They can start the TwoHarbours Walk to the Granny’s Pool - about45 minutes - from here, or they can strolldown the coastline to Shark Point. Or evenfurther intoCape St Francis and the 18th cen-tury lighthouse.Port St Francis is one of a few privately

owned harbours in South Africa, but alsohome to a diversity of restaurants, retail out-lets, commercial offices, conference facili-ties, a visitors centre, as well as residentialproperty and self catering accommodation.

Walkabout Adventures

Walkabout Adventures is an adventure com-pany situated in the small town of JeffreysBay. The company owns the only zip line inthe area, and offers abseiling and other adven-ture activities as well.

Jeffreys Bay’s waterfall has long been afavourite among visitors to the town. Peopleregularly flock in droves to relax at this land-mark, while the more adventurous jump offthe cliff into the deep water below.

Since the Kabeljouws river, which is hometo the waterfall, runs through a gorge, it is theperfect place to create Jeffreys Bay’s own zipline. This is why Lucas Loubser and EugeneJoubert, two friends with a combined 20 yearsof expertise in the adventure game, decidedto grab the opportunity presented to them bythe owner of the land the river runs through,to create an exciting zip line with at least fourcrossings.

Zip line stagesThe zip line currently comprises four stages, the length of which is:.Stage one - 110m..Stage two - 96m..Stage three - 90m..Stage four - 140m.

This is how the competition works

HOLIDAYS mean lots of friends, fresh airand fun.

Weall enjoy swimmingduring ourholidays-we may swim in the sea, in swimming pools, rivers or dams. To ensure we all come homesafely from a day at the beach - here are somebasic rules that need to be put in place. At home. Before leaving check out the weather..Have you got the correct protective cloth-ing, hat, sun block, plenty of water or juice, shoes and a towel? At the beach.Check thenotice boards for tide times, surfconditions and temperatures - ask a life-guard. He is there to advise and protect you..Place your possessions above the high tidemark..Set up near an identifiable mark. If thebeach gets crowded, you need to be able toidentify where your group is..Make sure you knowwhere the bathing ar-ea is in relation to your group..Once settled, put on your sun block andsun protection, according to the conditions..Do not drink alcohol and swim..Do not drink alcohol and become a nui-sance to the others around you..If you have an umbrella, make sure it issecure in the sand.Tips for youngsters and their safety.A baby has tender skin. Wind burn can beworse than sun burn. Make sure the babyhas the appropriate sun block, a hat and avest or shirt..Keepkidswithin arms reach. An incomingor outgoing wave carries a lot of force anda happy splashing baby needs to be protect-ed against those forces..Knee-deep is deep enough. Strong winds, waves and currents create dangerous ripcurrents that can sweep a child out to sea..Know the flags and where they are..Take frequent breaks. Do not tire yourself, drink plenty water..Go with the wind. Lost children tend totake the course of least resistance – followthe wind to find your child..Chaffing can be a problem, especially insalt water. Rub petroleum jelly over areasof friction if you are prone to chaffing..Call the authorities to help injured, stran-ded animals.Your turn for a swim. Not sure about the surf – ask the lifeguard.Always swimbetween the red andyellow flags..Never swim when you are drinking alco-holic beverages..Always swim with a friend..Be aware of your abilities. Never go be-yond your depth..Always be aware of where you are..Always be aware of the currents aroundyour legs and the waves against your body.If you feel you are too deep, if the currentis pulling too strongly against your legs andbody move back to shore..If there is a problem, be aware of the situa-tion before actually helping. It might bequicker and safer for both of you if youcalled the lifeguard..Be aware of changing weather conditions..Never leave glasses, cans or bottles lyingon the beach..If you are on a lilo and caught in a rip, donot leave the lilo. Raise your arm and waveat the beach. How to identify a ripA rip is a strong current extending throughthe surf and running out to sea..Ask a lifeguard..Water that is a darker colour, indicatingdeeper water..Murky brown water caused by sandstirred up off the bottom..Smoother surface with smaller waves, alongside white water (broken waves)..Waves breaking further out to sea on bothsides of calmwater leading from thebeachandout to sea or along the coast and then turningout to sea. The calm stretch of water is the rip..Debris floating out to sea..A rippled look, when the water around isgenerally calm.
