This is a not-to-be-missed, fabulously funevening of gaming and entertainment, in aidof St Francis Hospice in the Kouga Region.

Professional gaming company, GamingEvents, will bring residents roulette, pokerand Black Jack manned by professional crou-piers trained to entertain and thrill.

For only R4 000 each, these tables can besponsored by companies or individuals keen tosupport the event in a truely meaningful way.

Save the date for ’Monte Carlo Royale’

THE full Kouga Municipal Council had ameeting on Monday in Jeffreys Bay and de-spite the fact that no RDP houses have beenbuilt in Kouga for many years, the Humans-dorp housing list was withdrawn from theagenda.

No solid reasons were given for this deci-sion, despite it being queried by DA Council-lor Desmond Peterson.

“The Humansdorp housing list dates backto 2006, and now there will be yet another de-lay,” says Peterson.

The 220 names on the Pellsrus housing listand the 1 500 names on the Ocean View listwere accepted by Council.

It is unclear when the building of the hous-es will commence, despite assurances givento the community that construction was dueto start in 2015.

The Service Delivery and Budget Imple-mentation Plan (SDBIP) was approved byCouncil, despite objections raised by theDemocratic Alliance.

“The SDBIP is a tool that, if correctly uti-lised, can help the Mayor and Council, as

well as the Municipal Manager to monitorthe financial performance of the Munici-pality,” says DA Councillor Brenton Wil-liams.

“Monthly monitoring would enable Coun-cil to be pro-active and take remedial steps inthe event of poor performance, but the SDBIPpresented to Council is nothing more than anexercise in election box ticking,” he adds.

According to legislation, the SDBIPshould provide detailed monthly projec-tions of revenue as well as operational andcapital expenditure, but the Kouga SDBIP

provides only quarterly figures that areclearly copied and pasted from one quarterto the next.

The Auditor General in a report submittedtoCouncil, criticised the lackof oversight andmonitoring of financial management in Kou-ga as well as service delivery reporting andcompliance with legislation.

“Our report further highlights non-compli-ance with legislation and warning signs ofpossible financial misconduct and poor per-formance,” says Sithembele Pieters from theAuditor General.

IF YOU are thinking of throwing away that used cookingoil, think again! It could help you save on travellingcosts.

This is because a businessman in the Kouga turns re-cycled cooking oil into bio-fuel.Winthur Nell from Jeffreys Bay runs a family busi-

ness, J-BayBio-Fuels, that opened their doors in Septem-ber, last year. They specialise in the manufacturing ofquality bio-diesel from used cooking oil which is boughtmainly in Jeffreys Bay.With more than 10 years’ experience in the industry,

they have refined their process to provide a renewablefuel of exceptional quality - producing up to 25 000l ofbio-diesel amonthwhen in full production. They are cur-rently producing 7 500l of bio-diesel per month, whereasthey produced between 100l and 300l during their firstmonth of operation. Their client-base includes couriers, businesses and LDV’s such as PoliClinic, Casino Royale,Nina’s and Just Water and Bayline Couriers.“Bio-diesel can be used in existing diesel engines - no

conversion is needed. It is as bio-degradable as sugar andis essentially free of sulphur, resulting in cleaner engineoil but not compromising on the lubricity of the bio-die-sel, thus reducing engine wear and improving compo-nent life. Bio-diesel also combusts more fully in your en-gine providing you with a smoother ride,” says Nell.“The fuel consumption, power output, ignition and en-

gine torque when using our bio-diesel, is practicallyidentical to petroleum diesel fuel. But don’t just take myword for it.”Bio-diesel can be used 100% (B100) or in blends with

petroleum diesel fuel.“A user can switch between bio-diesel and petroleum

diesel whenever needed or desired, without any modifi-

cation. This does not restrict bio-diesel users from travel-ling to destinations where bio-diesel may not be availa-ble,” says Nell.According to Nell, bio-diesel reduces emissions of car-

cinogenic compounds asmuchas 85%compared to petro-leum diesel. It also provides significantly reduced emis-sions of carbon monoxide, particulate matter (blacksmoke), unburnedhydrocarbons (compoundswhich con-tribute to localised formation of smog) and sulphatescompared to petroleum diesel fuel.“A by-product of the manufacturing process is glycer-

ol. This is used to manufacture bars of industrial soap. The soap can be used for heavy duty cleaning – removingstains on clothing, cleaning oil and general purposecleaning,” says Nell. The family man is proud that his business venture not

only produces eco-friendly diesel, but it also contributesto job creation and an extra income for entrepreneurs.“Wemainly get our oil from restaurants in Jeffreys Bay,but smaller shops and individuals are also welcome tobring their used cooking oil to us. The only condition isthat it must be strained,” says Nell.

According to Nell, his long term vision is to enablecommunity members to start their own bio-fuel plant.. Bio-diesel is a clean burning renewable fuel that ismade from natural vegetable oils and fats. It is manufac-tured through a chemical process which splits oils andfats of natural origin into bio-diesel, which it is then re-fined through a series of processes. Bio-diesel is not vege-table oil with “special additives” to make it run betterin diesel engines.Bio-Diesel is naturally non-toxic, being derived from

vegetable oils. The acute oral lethal dose (LD50) of bio-diesel ismore than 17,4g/kg. Thismakes table salt (NaCl)with a LD50 of 3,0g/kg almost six times more toxic thanbio-diesel.

MONIQUE BASSON

WHO says you can’t teach an old dog newtricks?

Or half a trick that is, as standing up stillremains elusive to me. My colleague, on theother hand, managed to stand up for a few sec-onds before falling over - something weseemed to do a lot that day.Lizelle Olivier and I tackled our first surf

lesson on Saturday with the guidance of ourvery capable and experienced instructor, prosurfer Daniel Jegels, from IslandVibe Adven-tures in Jeffreys Bay.The first obstacle to overcome, was to put

on a wetsuit - not the most flattering item of

clothing if you are not an athletic and nimbleindividual, but it kept uswarm in the freezingwater. About fifteen minutes later, after lotsof pushing, pulling and giggling we eventual-ly looked the part.Nerves nearly made us turn back - wetsuits

and all. We always wanted to learn to surf, butbeing scared of not knowing what to do andfeeling intimidated and conscious aboutwear-ing a wetsuit - and off course worrying aboutsharks - nearly made us head for the hills.Once on the beach, we were shown the “co-

bra” technique before venturing into the wa-ter to practice. No one ever toldme getting on-to the surfboard is such hard work . . . and be-ing as clumsy, as I am, staying on is not mucheasier.

FIRSTSURF LESSON

Never tooold to learnnewtricks

PHOTOS:COLIN BASSON

With the “cobra” technique under the knee,we went back to the beach to learn the pop-uptechnique step-by-step. Daniel explained foot-by-foot how to stand up on the surfboard andwhich foot to put forward. Your strongest footis considered your ‘front foot’. With this tech-nique rehearsed, it was time to head back intothewaterwhereDaniel shouted the pop-up in-structions as we clung to the boards on ourway to the shore. One knee, two knees and . . . we are off the

board - making underwater summersaults.According to my husband, who was a specta-tor, we looked like whales: all you can see areour heads and feet sticking out of the water. We spend the majority of the lesson falling

off the board and under the water, but it was

a lot of fun. I am sure some of my bright pinknail polish is still stuck to the bottom of theocean.Still on a buzz from my first experience of

surfing, I am determined not to give up untilI managed to stand up - and then I will proba-bly invest in my own surfboard and wetsuit.Sure, someone who is in their 30’s, 40’s or

50’smay not be as agile or flexible as someonewho is half their age, but your age shouldn’tstop you from getting in the ocean and enjoy-ing all of the wonderful benefits that surfinghas to offer.. Do not miss the Kouga Express the nextthree weeks to read more about stand-up pad-dling (SUP), sandboarding, and townshiptours.
