WHOEVER said that to oversleep is a badthing, has not yet discovered the story behindone of the world’s leading international um-brella manufacturers now firmly rooted inJeffreys Bay.

It was just that, that did the trick in secu-ring the relocation of the R30-million Wood-line Shade Solutions, an umbrella productionfactory, from Johannesburg to Smith Townjust outside Jeffreys Bay - creating some 160job opportunities.“Relocating our headquarters and manu-

facturing to Jeffreys Bay is not only a strate-gic move that make good business sense, butone that will bring opportunities to an areawhich is incredibly rich in natural resources

and skilled labour,” says Namibian-bornbusinessman Fritz Walter (55), Woodline’sfounder and CEO.According toWalter, 80 job opportunitieswill

be created during the initial phase, while thisnumber will double when fully operational.“From our new factory we plan to offer ex-

ceptional service to match our outstandingquality. It will be a great advantage havingtwo international harbours and an interna-tional airport to service our customersaround theworld right on our doorstep,” saysWalter who has a degree in Marine Engineer-ing. He designs the modern-styled umbrellasand overseas production and packaging. It is hoped that this world-class factory,

which exports to 46 countries, comes onstream in March next year - giving the localeconomy a welcome boost.

by pure luck that I stumbled across theformer Sasko factory situated in SmithTown.“My wife, Melissa, is an avid mountain

bike rider. One morning she overslept and Itook her to join the group shewas ridingwiththat specific morning. On our way to themeeting point, we drove past the then dilapi-dated Sasko building.”

Woodline Shade SolutionsEstablished in 1989, Woodline is the domi-nant shade supplier in Africa. They further-more produce parasols for a host of internati-nal customers. With this firm foundation in exports and a

good grasp on the contract market, now bol-stered by the new factory,Woodline is steppingout into the light as one of the world’s foremostOEM manufacturers of quality parasols.Woodline produces all the parts of their

products in-house: wood work, stainlesssteel, steel, aluminium, assembly, cutting, sewing, and screen printing.Fuelled by the enjoyment of the outdoors,

it is no surprise that care for the environmentis an integral part of Woodline’s philosophy.“Given our close connection with the out-doors we are devoted to the responsible man-agement of our impact on the environment,”saysWalter. This ranges from the careful con-sideration of natural lighting and the use ofrenewable energy.“A healthy environment is essential for a

prosperous future, which is why we do it re-sponsibly where it counts in everything wedo,” says Walter. They furthermore provide a vegetable gar-

den to support their employees.

Partnering with local businessesJoining forces with local business Commer-

cial Marine, Woodline will work extremelyclose with this supplier of quality stainlesssteel products and fittings.Woodline and Commercial Marine will

share offices situated behind the CommercialMarine Store in Da Gama Road with state ofthe art equipment and personalised customersupport servicing both local and internatio-nal markets. With a keen interest in protecting the envi-

ronment the offices have a water harvestingprogramme and make use of natural lightingto save power.

Why Jeffreys?According toWalter, his passionfor the EasternCape and a desirefor a family-friend-ly environmentafter his bestfriend died from aheart attack, aretwo of the mainreasons he choseto build thefactory in JeffreysBay.“I was searching

for months on endfrom Coega toHumansdorp forthe perfect loca-tion for Woodline,”says Walter. “It is

BORN in 1960 in Walvis Bay, Namibia,Fritz Walter grew up with the sea on oneside, the desert on the other and regularexposure to extreme climate conditions.

As a young boy, growing upwith an ad-venturous spirit in a harbour town, hismain activities were boating, fishing anddiving. These foundational experiencesformed his life, as well as the productsthat Woodline has become so well knownfor. After completing studies in marine en-

gineering, Walter headed off to Alaskawhere he worked as a professional fish-erman in the Bearing Sea for two years. On his return to South Africa, he was

a self-confessed professional beach bum:living to wind surf, dive and cach fish.

But then he got bored and ventured intothemachine tool industry specialising intimber and metal fabrication.Woodline was started by Walter in

1989. The company started out manufac-turing wooden frame umbrellas with astaff compliment of two people. The combination of marine life skills

and a passion for engineering excellencehas lead to a range of products and mate-rials starting with the traditional timbercentre pole umbrellas right up to the la-test addition of a marine range.Apart fromWoodline Shade Solutions,

Walter owns 13 other businesses, whichinclude Commercial Marine, Solar 2000and Fish Technology. He is also an avid cattle and game farm-

As iemand half mymerend “Daar is ’n plek. . .” sê, vra waar dit is en gaan! Só hetMariska Spoormaker by Koffiedrinker

beland.

Gawie, baas vandié plaas, vertel toe ’n inte-

ressante storie om ’n Skot, Ier of Engelsman(ek kan nie meer onthou nie) se wyse raadaanons oor te dra: “If you look at theweather, you will go nowhere.”Toe sê Gawie wéér ons moet maar gaan, al

Vroeër jare was dié gebied toe onder hakea,

’n aggressiewe indringer.

Hy glo Koffiedrinker is so “onbekend” om-

MONIQUE BASSON

FORMaria andHaydnHolmes, amultiple record-holdingOlympic swimmer and lifeguard respectively, there areno more massive crowds. There is not as much travelingand there are no more big team swimming practices.

They became an integral part of a structure aimed atcatapulting local swimming to a new level when theyopened their highly successful aquatics centre, LiquidLines – Unsalted, in the heart of Cape St Francis in De-cember 2013. Liquid Lines is a state-of-the-art swimmingand training facility dedicated to revolutionising thewayathletes and novices move through water.Owner-trainers Maria and Haydn are both experts in

their trade. Maria is a Bulgarian national record-holderfor the 200m backstroke and an Olympian competitor, while Haydn represents South Africa for Surf and FreshWater Lifesaving. They met in Dubai, while working ashigh-ranking executives at Dubai’s Yas IslandWaterparkand Wadi Waterpark respectively. The couple, who has a 42-month old daughter, spent

thousands of hours studying the art and science of swim-ming. Their unquenchable love for all things water-rela-ted and extensive work with hundreds of studentsprompted them to develop a swimming system to maxi-mise any swimmer’s potential – seeing their return toSouth Africa after 15 years in Dubai to realise a lifelongdream.According to Maria, Liquid Lines is their unique con-

cept. “This is a one-of-a-kind facility in South Africa, ifnot the world.”“Haydn is a true patriot. He said that if we were to get

married, we will move back to South Africa and live inthe little town he grew so very fond of, Cape St Francis, where his parents bought a house in the 1980s,” says Ma-ria. “In December 2010 we got married on the balcony of19 St FrancisWay and have been committed to our returnto Seal Point ever since.Liquid Lines boasts a heated 20m long 3m x 2m lane

swimming pool and provides a world-class facility wherefresh, innovative approaches to aquatic fitness normscan be enjoyed.Liquid Lines offer Waterman-Fit (a high-intensity

cross-training workout consisting of swimming, under-water drills, treading water with/without weights, exer-cises on the pool deck and running), Aqua-Fit (circuit-style interval training), Masters Swimming (swimmingfor adults), and performance squad swimming for themore serious swimmers motivated to compete in localandnational competitions. There are also open lane timesfor part time lap swimmers and vacationing champion-ship swimmers.“We already have had several wins at various swim-

ming championships,” says a proud Maria. The facility is open to everyone, no matter what their

reason is for swimming.“We hoped to be successful, but never thought that we

will get the overwhelming support we did and are stillgetting. We are thankful for each and every swimmer –whether social or competitive – that supports us,” saysMaria. “We are currently averaging 1 300 people amonth.”And do they have plans to grow? “There is always room

for growth,” saysMaria. “Wemight consider franchisingLiquid Lines, but we will have to see where the futuretakes us.”Formore information, contactMaria or Haydn at 042 298

EVERYONE has a cut or skin abrasion nowand again.

Too often many different products are keptin a medicine cabinet to treat various abra-sions, cuts, insect bites, eczema, splinters, and infections. Now any minor skin ailmentswhich do not need medical attention can betreated safely and effectively at home, with8-Trek ointment.

To treat a cut with 8-Trek ointment, oneshould wash your hands very well in orderto keep infection from spreading. Clean thewound area with water and a mild liquid anti-septic. Then dry the area, apply 8-Trek oint-ment and protect with a dressing or plasterwhich should be changed daily.

8-Trek ointment helps treat minor skin irri-tations, insect bites and sunburn, by placinga small amount of onto the fingertip and rub-bing gently on to the affected area.

To treat ingrown hairs, thorns and splin-ters, apply a generous amount of 8-Trek oint-ment and cover with a dressing for 24 hours. This will help to draw out pus and foreign bod-ies by softening the infected area.

8-Trek ointment can help to treat boilswhich when untreated, can spread infectionand cause complications as well as recur. Theinfected area must be kept covered, but if aboil does not respond to a home treatment, itmay be to consult a doctor.

8-Trek ointment can safely be used on chil-dren and is available from pharmacies,

Dis-Chem and Link Pharmacies in a 25geasy-to-open container for R27.

YOUNG leaners are benefiting through col-laborative efforts of the government and theprivate sector.

According to the Institute of Training andEducation for Capacity Building, an NPO sit-uated in East London, Jeffreys Bay WindFarm’s Foundation Phase Reading CoachesSupport Programme, is an example of howwell the public and private sector can worktogether to benefit society. “Education is a so-cietal duty and the responsibility not only ofgovernment, but also of civil society. The ef-fects of our history on the fabric of our wholesociety, including education, have been soprofound that it will take the efforts of all sec-tors to build a stronger education system,”says Barbara Valentine, Research and Devel-opment for Institute of Training and Educa-tion for Capacity Building.Co-operation, support and involvement

from the Department of Education are cru-cial, as theDepartment is ultimately account-able for all programmes within schools.“Without amutually supportive relationshipwith the Department and especially the Ui-tenhage District Department of Education,we wouldn’t be able to implement any of theschool-based programmes,” says MarionGreen-Thompson, Economic DevelopmentManager for Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. The wind farm has shown its commitment

to helping communities through education, with a focus on foundation and early child-hood development. The programme aims toimprove the literacy and numeracy skills ofprimary school learners, through the intro-duction of Reading Coaches, into 12 benefici-ary schools. Coaches run reading sessionswith groups of up to fifteen, grades 1 – 3learners at a time, although most of thesegroups are smaller so that each child gets in-dividual attention. This programme, which launched in Octo-

ber 2014, has been funded for a three year pe-riod by the wind farm, to the value of R1 307540.00 todate ofwhichR198 000was specifical-ly allocated for the purchase of books for ap-proximately 6 762 learners across twelveschools, all falling within a 50km radius ofthe wind farm.Participating schools in the vicinity of Jef-

freys Bay Wind Farm include: Chigwell Pri-mary School, Gamtoosvalley PrimarySchool, Graslaagte Primary School, Kruis-fontein Primary School, Masisebenze Prima-rySchool,Mzingisi PrimarySchool, PatensiePrimary School, Quagga Primary School, StPatricks EC Primary School, Vukani Prima-ry School, Weston Primary School and SeaVista Primary School.“It is widely acknowledged that the biggest

challenge to education outcomes is the lackof literacy and numeracy skills at the Foun-dation Phase stage, as it limits learners’ po-tential as they progress higher up the educa-tion chain. This needs to be addressed so thatchildren have the right skills to take mathe-matics and science through to Grade 12,”says Green-Thompson.
