Foto: ERNA LOOCK

THREE Kouga communityprojects received a majorboost when Rural and
Agrarian Reform MEC ZolekaCapa handed them state-of-the-art equipment for their opera-tions on Monday.
At the event, held at the Hu-mansdorp Country Club, JeffreysBay brick-makers Do It Well re-ceived two brick-making machin-ery, while sewing groups Lap-hum’ilanga from Humansdorpand Hankey’s Uzuko Lwethu eachgot sewing machines.
The intervention follows visitsto the various projects by the East-ern Cape Legislature portfoliocommittees, accompanied by Kou-ga officials, during the TakingLegislature to the People pro-gramme last year.
Capa said people must make useof opportunities that governmentpresented them and they shouldmake use of the Local EconomicDevelopment in the municipalityfor information on how to accessgovernment departments for eco-nomic opportunities.
“We don’t want this machineryto become furniture. That is whywe are first going to focus on train-
ing of participants in order forthem to be truly productive andself-sustaining,” she said.
Capa added that her departmentand the municipality were goingto facilitate a process of findingmarkets for the projects in orderto ensure sustainability. “We
cannot be dictated to by externalmonopolies. We must ensure thatwe keep some money circulatingin our area to boost the local econ-omy,” she concluded.
Some of the possible areas werethe supply of bricks for the con-struction of RDP houses in Kougaand supply of linen to the healthfacilities in Kouga.Continued on page 3 ...

BARELY escaping with her life, yet another cat be-came the victim of a pellet gunwielding thug on Jan-uary 8 in Hummingbird Crescent, Aston Bay.Now 15 stitches and almost R10 000 later, the Bas-
tos-family is grateful that their pet-child survivedthis onslaught.MarietjieBastos, who rescuedDaisywhen shewas
only 6 months old, aptly named after her white andblack spots, is now offering a R2 000 reward for posi-tive information leading to the identity and arrestof the person responsible for shooting her cat.According to Bastos, the 2-year-old Daisy was shot
at close range andwith a high impact gun at approxi-mately 20:00 that Tuesday night.“We became worried when Daisy, who promptly
comes home every night no later than 19:30, did notreturn thatnight.Wewent looking forher at approxi-
mately 20:45 and found her sitting under a bush inour garden,” said Bastos.“We immediately realised that something serious-
ly was wrong, but we could only find a small bumpon her side. We phoned the local veterinary clinicwho advised us to monitor her closely through thenight. The next morning we rushed her to the clinicwhere theveterinarianorderedanx-rayafter discov-ering a bullet entry wound on Daiy’s side.”According to Bastos, the pellet went straight
through Daisy’s midrif and perforated her spleen atthree places. “She had to undergo an emergency op-eration and received 14 stitches on her belly and oneat the entry wound. The bump we felt the night be-fore, was the bullet that got stuck beneath her skin.”Bastos said that another cat was shot with a pellet
gunonly a fewdays later anda third cat died ofwhichthe cause is undetermined.Anyone with information in this regard, can con-

probleme by drie skole waar kon-trakte reeds verlede Maarttoegeken is, maar baie min vorder-ing gemaak is,” sê Van Lingen in ’nmediaverklaring.

DIT was so amper of die Kouga-munisipaliteit was hul gesogteBlouvlag by Dolfynstrand kwyt.

OVER 40% of first year students inthe country never make it past theirfirst year. This is attributed to a variety of ob-
stacles thatyoungpeoplehave toover-comewhenleavingschool, saysTotsieMemela-Khambula, CEO of Eduloanwhich provides loans to students. Not only do they struggle with li-
mited access to sufficient finance topay for further studies, but they alsolack life skills, proper career gui-dance and social support systems. Inaddition, they often come fromschools where the level of educationis inadequate. To help bridge the divide between
secondary and tertiary education,Ed-uloan is currently in the process of es-tablishing a trust to give studentswho have been granted loans by Edu-loan an opportunity to succeed.“This is a very exciting project
basedat theNelsonMandelaMetropol-itan University. Tutors will be madeavailable to these students electroni-cally. Students who have questions
theymay be too embarrassed to ask inclass can connect and get answers,”said Memela-Khambula.There are several ways to narrow
this gap between secondary and ter-tiary education, said Memela-Kham-bula. “Firstly, teachers should focuson teaching and be passionate aboutthis calling. They must understandthat they have a responsibility to-wards the children in their care.“Secondly, we must take a look at
the pupils themselves. I witness acertain entitlement attitude amongthe ‘born-frees’ – the generation bornafter the attainment of democracy in1994. The older generation under-stands that hardwork pays off. In con-trast to this, today’s youngsters seemto view tenderpreneurs as rolemodels– people who are not highly educated, but who seem to have money. We needto find better rolemodelswho canhigh-light the importance of education foryourself, your family, the economy, andour nation,” said Memela-Khambula.A third problem area is the lack of
career guidance, she said. The resultis that they arrive on campuswith on-ly the faintest idea ofwhat is availableto them. “Kids need to get exposed tothe world. They need to become in-formed about what is required for acertain career.”Memela-Khambula said the per-
ception that universities of technolo-gy or colleges of Further Educationand Training (FETs) are not goodenough is false. “What we need mostare people with practical skills – likeplumbers and artisans – people whocan become self-employed and createjobs for others.”Memela-Khambula has a personal
message for students. She comes froma poor background, with her motherbeing a domestic worker. “She told usthat the only thing that could end thecycle of poverty was education. I be-lievedher. I learnedfirst-handthatyouget education wherever you can. Ifyour family has no money, that is noexcuse. Work by day, and study bynight.”

THE causeway to ParadiseBeach will be closed to vehi-cles and pedestrian traffic forabout three months whileflood repairs are being done.Kouga Municipal Manager
Sidney Fadi said torrentialrains and flooding during 2012had caused significant struc-tural damage to the causewaythat connects Paradise Beachto Aston Bay and Jeffreys Bay.The municipality applied
for disaster managementgrant funding to repair thecauseway and was awardedjust more than R2-million.Fadi said a contractor had
been appointed and that workwas expected to start on Feb-ruary 5.“Once work starts, the
causeway will have to beclosed to traffic. We have hadlengthy discussions with thecontractor and, unfortunately,
this cannot be prevented.”He said for this period motor-
ists would have to make use ofthe gravel road that connectsParadise Beach to the R102 be-tween Humansdorp and Jef-freysBay.Themunicipalitywillbe grading the road to accommo-date the increase in traffic.A temporary walkway will
also be constructed across theSeekoeiRiver to accommodatethose without vehicles.Fadi gave affected residents
the assurance that themunici-palitywould do all in its powerto minimise inconvenience tothem.“We have met with the resi-

HUNDREDS of residents havesigned petitions and submit-ted letters with regard to theproposed banning of dogs fromthe beaches in the Kouga. This follows after themunic-
ipality made their decision toprohibit dogs on certainKougabeachesknown to thepublic onDecember 20 last year. This decision has already
been approved in principle byCouncil. Municipal spokes-person Mfundo Sobele previ-ously saidCouncil is consider-ing banning dogs from all/de-marcated beaches because ofthe numerous complaintsfrom beach-goers about, eg,
aggressive dogs on the beach- there have been attacks inthe past - or about owners notcleaning up after their dogs.“Banning dogs from beach-
es is a contentiousmatter. Themunicipality would, there-fore, like to thank residentsfor taking the public partici-pation process so seriouslyand for submitting their viewsso that Council can make aninformed decision,” said mu-nicipal spokesperson Laura-Leigh Randall. “Officials arebusy working through thecomments so that a report canbe submitted to Council. Wewould like to assure residentsthat a final decision will bemade only once all commentshave been considered.”

kwessies.

GRAAD 1LEERDERS OEFEN VIR ATLETIEK
DUE to the demand from buddingcyclists, The Herald VW CycleTour has introduced an “endur-ance” challenge for childrencalled the Powerade 10km Sprint.
Aimed at the 10 to 12 year agegroup, the latest addition to the Pow-erade-sponsored family road eventseffectively bridges the gap betweenthe 21km Leisure Ride on the oneside and the 2km Kiddies’ Ride and500m Toddlers’ Dash on the other.According to event coordinator
LindaHarwood, thenewrace fulfilledthe organisers’ vision to offer a com-plete weekend festival of cycling.“Like the Leisure Ride, it’s an idealopportunity for parents to interactwith their kids because participants
have to be accompanied by an adult.”For older teens, Harwood said the
new 55km Pursuit – which replacesthe existing 40km and 70km races –would include licensed U14 and U16racing categories.“Now there really is something for
everyone leading up to the 106kmClassic feature race.”On the mountain bike side, she
said Powerade would once againsponsor the 30kmLeisure Challenge,5km Kiddies’ Challenge and 500mToddlers’ Dash. She said the cycle tour –which takes
place inPort Elizabeth andAddo – epit-omised NelsonMandela Bay’s healthy,family-oriented, outdoor lifestyle.Powerade’s special events manag-
er Danny Williams said it was these
values that resonated strongly withthe sports drink brand.“Our brand is very much about
family togetherness and living ahealthy, active lifestyle. We love thefact that the new event has kids rid-ing with their moms and dads.”Williams said the 10km race was a
welcome addition to the line-up andthat Powerade had been a proud spon-sor of the road and mountain bikefamily events since their inception. He said the sponsorship would
once again include a financial contri-bution, liquid refreshment for partic-ipants andnovelty items for the good-ie bags. “Our two Gig Rigs (mobilemusic trucks) will also add to the fes-tive atmosphere over the weekend.”Aside from the sponsorship as-
pect, Williams said the tour was im-portant from a corporate social re-sponsibility perspective.“We are very happy about Reach
for a Dream’s involvement and thatthey benefit directly from it.”Proceeds from the family road rac-
es go to the non-profit organisation, which makes the wishes of childrenwith life-threatening illnesses cometrue. One such recipient is 15-year-old cancer survivor Vuvu, who wasdiagnosedwith aplastic anaemia lastyear and received a life-saving bonemarrow transplant from her five-year-old brother Andile.Vuvu’swish for a scrapbookingkit
was fulfilled last October and kepther busy during her four-month stayat the Red Cross Children’s Hospital
in Cape Town. Now in remission, the Victoria
Park High School pupil describedher little brother as “very brave andjoyful” and said the operation hadstrengthened their already closebond. She said she would be there to
cheer Andile on when he takes partin the Toddlers’ Dash at Hobie Beachin PE on February 2.All the family road and mountain
bike events take place on the Satur-day, while the 55km Pursuit and106kmClassic round off the weekendon the Sunday.Enter at www.heraldcycle-
tour.co.za before January 21.For updates, follow @heraldcy-
