“WEdonot have any toilets, electricity or runningwater. If we want water or are in need of ablution facilities, wemust walk for several kilometres to Shukushukuma - nomatter what time of day or night it might be. However, the municipality promised us electricity in the near fu-ture,” says Bhayi.“We furthermore fear for our safety and that of our

children and animals. We are situated right next to themain road leading to St Francis Bay. Just the other daymy neighbour’s house was hit by a car; he now has tostart rebuilding again.”According to Joy van Hemert from the SPCA Assisi,

hermain concerns are the escalation of cross contamina-tion from stray dogs, the abuse of their animals, as wellas the imminent rat infestation due to the lack of refusecollection.“Not only do the children poke our animals with

sticks, but their dogs also fight with our animalsthrough the fence,” says Van Hemert. It is furthermorefeared that their access roadwill be obstructed by infor-mal houses.“As the situation is at the moment, it is a health and

safety hazard for both animals and residents. These resi-dents have no adequate shelter or basic facilities. Al-though not ideal, it will help if the municipality puts upa skip and porter toilets.”Laura-LeighRandall, KougaMunicipality spokesper-

son, says: “Themunicipality is in the process of formal-ising the informal settlements Phola Park and Shuku-shukuma, so that residents can have access to basicservices. The land in front of the SPCA is one of theareas that have been earmarked for possible develop-ment.“The residents who have moved there are those who

have provisionally been allocated plots. While the condi-tions here are not ideal, it is a healthier place for themto live than where they were before.”Randall says the municipality has assisted the resi-

dents to establish a steering committee in order for thecommunity to have input in the formalisation of thearea.“It is undeveloped landwhichwas recently earmarked

for housing. The electrification of the area will com-mence shortly. The municipality is also busy assessingthe water and sanitation requirements. Temporarymeasures will be put in place to address these require-ments while the overall formalisation process is under-way.According to Randall, this land will become the new

home of the relocated residents.“The SPCA was included in the planning process.

Their main concern initially was that their access roadwould be blocked by the proposed houses. This concernis addressed in the new proposed layout,” says Randall. She assured that no more residents will be relocated

to this area.

RUNNING, or rather walking and even crawl-ing along, in heaven - feeling like hell.

A more apt description is hard to find forthe annual Enid Pretorius Women’s Day TrailRun and Walk that took place in and aroundSt Francis Bay this Saturday. However, I amsure this description is only applicable to aselected few - including myself and my bravecolleague - as the majority of runners camejogging past us smiling from ear to ear.

Not realizing what a trail run entails, andbeing extremely unfit, we decided to take partin this year’s Trail Run. How difficult can15km be after all? If we get tired, we can justslow down our pace, right? No! I have neverbeen more wrong in my life.

All geared up and ready for the Trail Run,which takes competitors along some of thebest-kept secrets of the coastline of St FrancisBay and its surrounds, we enthusiasticallykicked of with a brisk walk.

With the contrast of the ocean on our rightand fynbos on our left, the route took usthrough the most beautiful private land, passthe light house in Cape St Francis, along thebeach, pass the Port and to the finish line. Theterrain includes rocky sections with big boul-ders, expansive white beaches, toweringdunes, and a single track through fynbosmore suitable for mountain goats.

The brisk walk soon slowed down to anaverage walk, and before we knew it, we werehuffing and puffing way at the back.

Conquering narrow foot paths, countlesshills and boulders we finally reached the lighthouse after what felt like at least 20km - onlyto hear that we still have seven more gruel-

ling kilometres to go.For a few brief seconds we contemplated get-

ting a lift back to St Francis Bay, but giving upis not in our vocabulary list, so we carried on.

The walk on the beach was a breeze, butwhen we reached the dunes our hearts sankinto our shoes. Turning around was no longeran option, so we gathered all our courage andcarried on - slowly but surely making someheadway.

Great were our joy when we left the dunesbehind us and reached the Port - surely wemust be close to the finish line. Not at all! Westill had to conquer numerous hills, steepwooden stairs, narrow paths, bushes, rocksand tar roads for several kilometres. Howmanykilometreswecan’t say, aswewere con-vinced we had crossed the 15km mark hoursbefore.

More than four hours later and fifteen mi-nutes before the cut of time we finally crawledover the finish line with blood red faced, torntakkies and cramps all over. But we had madeit, and that is all that counts -even if we camelast.

Even though sore muscles and a walkingstick (luckily not for me) were our fate for thefollowing day or two, I will most definitelycompete again next year. This time, however,I will be more prepared and start training inadvance.

RIDERS fromacrossSouthAfricaare gearingup for the toughest singe stage mountain bikeevent in the world - the Trans Baviaans 24-hour Mountain Bike Marathon.

Riders will descent on this gruelling andunmarked 230km route from the main streetWillomore this Saturday and cross the finishline at Fountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay on theSunday.

As one of South Africa’s premier mountainbiking events, this mountain bike marathoncreates the perfect combination of extremelychallenging cyclingamongst spectacular scen-ery through exquisite mountain ranges, rightinto the heart of the magnificent Baviaansk-loof Wilderness Area - all in a team format.

Being a team event, consisting of 2, 3 or 4

cyclists per team, the concept is very differentfrom that of an ordinary MTB race.

The event is also unique as the entire routeis unmarked and tests the orientation skillsof each rider. This ensures team workamongst everyone andbrings out a camarade-rie, making it an unforgettable experience.Teams have to check in and out at the check-points strategically placed on route, so theirwhereabouts can be traced.

The late start at 10:00 forces all the ridersto use lights for night time riding.

The routeThe Trans Baviaans 24-hour Mountain BikeMarathon route starts in Willowmore in themain street and then follows a farm roadthrough Poortjies to link up with the Ba-viaanskloof turn-off ± 4km out of town.

The route then ascends over a distance of ±26km to the top of the spectacular Nuwekloof-pas. For the next ± 80km the route drops downinto the Baviaanskloof, passing through a

numberof farmssuchasRietrivier and theBavi-aanskloof Police Station at Studtis,, after whichit enters the Baviaanskloof wilderness area un-der the control of Eastern Cape Parks Board.

This long descent ends at Geelhoutbos, adistance of ± 110km from Willowmore. Fromhere the route becomes more strenuous, nar-rower and more difficult to negotiate, reach-ing a high point at Bergplaas, at ± 147km fromWillowmore. From here it drops suddenly in-to the Cambria Valley past some citrus farmsand the Komdomo Camp site in the banks ofthe Groot River at ± 175km mark.

From Komdomo the route follows the roadto Patensie, but before reaching it, turns offto Humansdorp on an undulating gravel roadto cross the Humansdorp-Patensie tar road at± 210km mark.

The route then follows a farm road to Jef-freys Bay were it finishes at the FountainsMall in Jeffreys Bay, 230 km from Willowmore.

The total accumulated climbs for this routeis 2540m.
