Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, September 12th 2021 Race 1 #1 Perfect Picture #8 Wild River Wolf #4 Section Ten #7 Speak Unity #1 PERFECT PICTURE dueled on the lead before weakening to beat just one foe when debuting at the OS/$40,000 level on August 8. He sheds the blinkers are could maybe improve second time out. #8 WILD RIVER WOLF dueled with Perfect Picture on August 8 before tiring to be seventh, then ran a decent race on turf 10 days ago. He also removes blinkers for the drop in for $25,000. #4 SECTION TEN debuted in the Simcoe Stakes, showing speed before faltering. Cheek pieces are added. #7 SPEAK UNITY faltered badly when trying a maiden special weight route on the Saratoga grass last month. His two sprints at Belmont in the spring were good runs. Race 2 #5 Malibu Edge #2 Karakontie Pat #6 Blue Max #4 Victory Town #5 MALIBU EDGE stalked the pace from off of the rail and was second best behind the overdue Small Talk when competing over this course on August 21. He has raced very well in three tries over this course. #2 KARAKONTIE PAT debuted in a main track sprint on August 15, racing wide near the back early and passing a few foes late. He should get a better trip this time and could easily improve. #6 BLUE MAX missed by a head when beaten by the overdue Dr. Green at the OS/$40,000 level on August 22. He has not run a bad race in four tries yet and should still be competitive despite rising back up to the maiden special weight level. #4 VICTORY TOWN had been off for over a year when finishing fourth on the outer turf on August 7. I question if the group he faced that day was very good; blinkers are added. Race 3 #2 Jocassee #4 Snow Squall #3 Popthechampagne #7 El Valor #2 JOCASSEE sat about three lengths off of an easy pacesetter and could not make up much ground in the stretch when finishing sixth for $15,000 on August 14. She looks tough with the halving in value. #4 SNOW SQUALL tried the synthetic for the first time in a $10,000 sprint on August 21 and did not run badly, finishing fifth by 4 ½ lengths. She should fit very nicely here. #3 POPTHECHAMPAGNE was taken back, had to try and close into very slow fractions and was second best (again) behind a first-timer who had a better trip when last competing on August 28. This field looks tougher. #7 EL VALOR ran some decent races against $16,000 three- year olds at Tampa this winter. She drops in value for her first start since February. Race 4 #1 Fire Knight #2 Tourist’s Dream #7 Greyshott #4 Chancel #1 FIRE KNIGHT dueled on the lead and led to the furlong pole before giving way to be fourth on August 15. She should be speedy once again and could handle the turf well. #2 TOURIST’S DREAM was entered for $25,000 yesterday but was scratched and re-entered at this level. He raced well when finally getting the opportunity to try the turf on August 22; blinkers are added as he shortens back up to one turn. #7 GREYSHOTT was a neck better than Fire Knight when finishing third on August 15 after a decent seventh with some trouble two starts ago. Like Fire Knight he is a first- time turfer. #4 CHANCEL made the lead but gave way to be third when kicking off his season over the main track on August 15. He got hooked in a speed duel when debuting on turf last year; there is a risk of a duel this time around. Race 5 #8 Drop a Caribou #4 Mentoring #3 Music Hour #7 Spanish Prince #8 DROP A CARIBOU is by Where’s the Ring, who is just 6% with debuting juveniles. His dam won second time out as a two-year-old; two of her three foals to race won first time out at two and all three of her foals so far are very speedy. #4 MENTORING has run two good third place finishes in two starts to date. He has the speed to lay close and has the advantage of being the only runner in this field with prior racing experience. #3 MUSIC HOUR is by Maclean’s Music, who does very well (20%) with his debuting juveniles and 14% with synthetic sprinters. His dam produced Muskoka Gold, who won the Cup and Saucer and finished second in both the Grey and the Coronation Futurity in 2019. #7 SPANISH PRINCE will be the lone runner in this field to wear blinkers. He is by 12% two-year-old debut sire Cairo Prince, and out of an unraced dam who’s only foal to race is Red River Rebel, who won at a Stake at two last year. Race 6 #5 Patio Party #8 Spirit Soul Body #1 Hey Mickey #9 Tara Tattoo #5 PATIO PARTY never got involved when debuting against maiden special weight company on August 15; hopefully the sharp drop in for $25,000 improves his fortunes. #8 SPIRIT SOUL BODY debuted for this price on August 21 and ran a close second with a good finish. He should be competitive once again. #1 HEY MICKEY is similar to Patio Party; completely uncompetitive in his debut against much tougher on July 18 and now hoping

This field looks tougher. #7 EL

VALOR ran some decent races against $16,000 three-year olds at Tampa this winter.

Like Fire Knight he is a first-time turfer.

Page 2: Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson

to wake up against easier company. #9 TARA TATTOO debuts off of two fairly quick gate works. He debuts with blinkers; Hyper has yet to have a winner with his six foals who have raced at two.

Race 7 #1 Taos (FR) - Best Bet #9 Peace of Ekati #5 Pleasecallmeback #8 World of Prospects #1 TAOS (FR) tracked the pacesetting, eventual winner Mambointheforest, taking a run at him into the far turn before giving way to be fourth in the first leg of this series. With a better setup he could be a serious factor this time. #9 PEACE OF EKATI had everything his own way when winning a first level allowance two starts ago, then weakened to be sixth when facing much tougher in the Singspiel. He was competitive in this series last year; he may try to outsprint Mambointheforest for the early lead. #5 PLEASECALLMEBACK made a wide rally from last to be beaten a nose in the first leg of this series. He is tough to seriously endorse on top; he is a non-two who will take money and always finds a way to get beat, but he is a horse with more talent than his record suggests. #8 WORLD OF PROSPECTS exits a win at the $4,500 level on the Fort Erie turf. He has a lot of marathon back class; even looking back to last year he was second best in the Tour de Fort behind a freakish Auntie Katherine, who’s performance on that day could be very competitive with these.

Race 8 #2 Artie’s Storm #9 Gretzky the Great #1 Riptide Rock #5 My Sea Cottage (IRE) #2 ARTIE’S STORM ran too good to lose when angling wide, dueling hard for the stretch run and missing by a head in the Greenwood. He has been a dead-game racehorse in every start to date and could continue to improve. #9 GRETZKY THE GREAT dueled on the lead, put away the other speed and did prove to be a deserving winner in the Greenwood. He is undefeated over this course and has the speed to find position from the outside. #1 RIPTIDE ROCK likely would have won the Queen’s Plate if not for a rough start. Likely to be favoured here, he does look extremely tough but turf may not be his best surface; he beat a soft field in his winning turf debut. #5 MY SEA COTTAGE (IRE) made his local debut in a solid first level allowance on the inner turf, running a credible third. This is a class test but he could earn a lesser share..

Race 9 #4 Skygaze #1 Crystal Glacier #5 Art of Almost #2 No Mo Lady #4 SKYGAZE ran a very good third with a wide rally when last competing in June in the Trillium. Synthetic specialist

should make her presence felt. #1 CRYSTAL

GLACIER was beaten a nose in the Trillium, but did not fire at all on turf in the Nassau. The Trillium may have been a peak for her but if she can run back to that race she will be tough. #5 ART OF ALMOST added blinkers and was able to prevail by a neck against second level allowance company on July 24. When she is at her best she is probably the best horse in this race but she does have a tendency to hang a bit. #2 NO MO LADY is winless since June 2020 but has been in good enough form south of the border; she has trained on the synthetic at Fair Hill.

Race 10 #6 Sandy Bay #5 Spite Store #3 Al Heybay #4 Lucky Score #6 SANDY BAY wheels back quickly after running a decent fourth eight days ago. He has been in good form this year although he may lack some killer instinct; however he looks strong in this field. #5 SPITE STORE had trouble on the turn when finishing third over this course on August 20. Hopefully he will have an easier time getting around now that he has had a start over the surface. #3 AL HEYBAY was a very game second after dueling on the lead in the same August 20 race that Spite Store exits. Blinkers are added for the first time. #4 LUCKY SCORE rallied up the inside to pull off an upset win in the aforementioned August 20 race. He had a lot of things go his way that night and will not offer as much value this time.

Race 11 #8 Hallie’s Hero #9 Hitters Park #4 Victor’s Destiny #5 Call Me Wally #3 Brass Compass #8 HALLIE’S HERO made the lead but was out kicked and ended up a solid third when getting back to the synthetic on August 15. He should fit with this group. #9 HITTERS PARK took the plunge from $40,000 in for this price on August 27 but was out kicked by another class dropper. He looks like the one to beat here. #4 VICTOR’S DESTINY has not been able to get a clear lead since being claimed but has been racing well. If he does get loose early he will be tough to run down. #5 CALL ME WALLY was a head better than Hallie’s Hero on August 15. He is a very honest and consistent old horse who always deserves a look. #3 BRASS COMPASS faltered to be fourth of five after forcing the pace for $15,000 on August 12 and continues his slide down the claiming ranks today.
