Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 20th 2020 Race 1 #5 Rapunzel’s Dream #6 Naked Illusion #2 She’s Got Moves #1 Flashy Princess #5 RAPUNZEL’S DREAM hooked an insanely tough group in her debut then ran an okay race second time out, appearing to have horse at the end after losing ground on the turn. The turf and route distance are both question marks but there may be some more horse here than it appears on paper. #6 NAKED ILLUSION debuted in a maiden allowance sprint on opening day and failed to threaten after breaking a touch slow. She gets in significantly easier for her second attempt. #2 SHE’S GOT MOVES showed speed but seemed to have trouble getting around the opening turn at Tampa last time out. Unfortunately the rail is out today and we may see history repeat itself, but this horse looks competitive. Perhaps keep an eye on this one if she ends up in an E.P. Taylor race down the road. #1 FLASHY PRINCESS has not shown much speed but has run fairly well in three starts to date. Blinkers are added for her turf debut. Race 2 #4 Pink Lemonade #7 Bet Alpha #2 Blessed Two #5 Hardy Candy #4 PINK LEMONADE dueled on the lead in a decent group of $25,000 non-twos on June 7, emptying out in the stretch. He looks like the controlling speed on the drop in class. #7 BET ALPHA kicked off his season last week in an optional $40,000, fading to finish last. He was in decent form towards the end of 2019. #2 BLESSED TWO has been a disappointment after his maiden-breaking win in the Simcoe Stakes in 2018. He was unable to threaten while dropping in the claiming ranks last year; he now returns as a gelding. #5 HARDY CANDY raced wide and finished midpack in a race won by a romping lone-speed runner on June 6. He is not particularly consistent but fits with this group. Race 3 #5 First Spring #3 Nestleton Hush #2 Whiskey Victor #4 Jammin Still #5 FIRST SPRING raced very well in his first two starts off of the claim, the Grey Handicap in which he was third and an optional $40,000 where he was beaten by the classy Full Extreme. He cut back to a sprint a week later and came up empty; he is an effective two-turn turf horse and should be a contender if he works out a trip. #3 NESTLETON HUSH is the most obvious closer in a race with several speed types. He should be able to fall back and save ground; if he’s ready to fire he is a legitimate contender. #2 WHISKEY VICTOR had success in turf route races in Cincinnati last summer. He was off from September to December, disappointing in his return at Turfway then being gelded in February. He was in the entries at Churchill for this price in May but was stuck on the also-eligibles; we’ll see how his Cincinnati form translates. #4 JAMMIN STILL was able to narrowly hold off a stablemate to win over this course in October, then faded in a pair of non-threes where he was beaten by Nestleton Hush and First Spring. His best shot in this race may be to try and race from off of the pace as he had been earlier in his career. Race 4 #9 Zephan #8 Riverrun #2 Lucas n’ Lori #11 King Causeway #9 ZEPHAN has not hit the board in four starts over turf, but his turf races have actually been among his better efforts. His form is a bit spotty but he has run good races against good quality foes here and there; much of this group is questionable. #8 RIVERRUN was fairly impressive in his maiden win, racing three-wide on both turns on prevailing. He did not race again for over two months and was a non-factor before being put away for the rest of the season. He has the potential to be a decent horse. #2 LUCAS N’ LORI was winless in nine starts last year with a number of good efforts along the way. The pace scenario in this race is murky; there are a number of closers and this gelding may not fall as far out of it as normal from the inside. #11 KING CAUSEWAY was never involved after a rough start when racing over the slop at Oaklawn and was sent back to Woodbine in March when the backstretch opened. His prior form should make him one of the favourites here, but the post is a hindrance. Race 5 #2 Steady Earner #9 Cummings Road #1 Lokinforpursemonee #6 Leonard’s Bay #2 STEADY EARNER dueled from the outside and was game when trying to hold off the stalking Colleen’s Sailor on June 6. He will likely be able to get a good trip following Forester’s Forum early. #9 CUMMINGS ROAD will make his 11 year old debut here coming off of a three-win season in 2019. He has been a very game horse for a long time, his resume speaks for itself; he enters the race off of a series of slow breezes. #1 LOKINFORPURSEMONEE takes a sharp drop for his seasonal debut. His lone win last year was his first start off of the bench, closing into a rapid pace; probably the horse to beat. #6 LEONARD’S BAY found a seam on the inside and was able to win his non-three on December 8, then got a poor trip a week later when facing much tougher and was a non-factor. He shortens to a sprint for his return to the races and could close for a share.

Race 1 #5 Rapunzel’s Dream #6 Naked Illusion #2 She’s Got Moves #1 Flashy Princess #5 RAPUNZEL’S DREAM hooked an insanely tough group in her debut then ran an okay race second time out, appearing to have horse at the end after losing ground on the turn.

He shortens to a sprint for his return to the races and could close for a share.

Race 6

#7 Elusive Knight #2 Frankie Barone #4 Full Extreme #6 Sine Metu #7 ELUSIVE KNIGHT had an impressive two year old campaign, which closed with a close second in the Display behind the talented shipper Vanzzy. His Beyers at two were very good; if he’s as good at three he will be tough to beat. #2 FRANKIE BARONE went through his claiming conditions last year then closed out the year with a good second at this level in a three horse photo. This group may be a touch tougher than the last one he faced but it’s tough to argue with the form he was in last year. #4 FULL EXTREME angled to the outside and was able to finish best on December 8, earning a potentially inflated 85 Beyer. He has a consistently strong late kick and was able to fire off of the layoff last year. #6 SINE METU may need a start or two to run his best but is probably capable of winning this condition on the right day. Although he’s often thought of as a turf marathon specialist, his last two wins have both come around two turns on the Tapeta.

Race 7 #3 Love of Mine #4 Phantom Dance #5 Muchokova #7 Strike a Beat #3 LOVE OF MINE had notoriously poor luck last year, seemingly unable to get a good trip and missing by a nose in what was probably his only cleanly run race. His speed figures are competitive and he could have a shot at an upset with a clean run. #4 PHANTOM DANCE raced as a gelding for the first time at Gulfstream in April and showed some improvement, finishing fourth but not far beaten for second. His only poor race came at Laurel last fall, but it would not be a surprise to see him continue to move forward as a gelding. #5 MUCHOKOVA ran a big race on debut over the inner turf, rallying from second last to miss by a neck. His two final races over the synthetic were not bad, but he should appreciate the return to the grass and may be the type to fire well when fresh. #7 STRIKE A BEAT did not run a poor race at Woodbine last year. He has since been privately purchased.

Race 8 #1 Trading Bay #2 Society’s Story #4 Spanish Ballerina #9 Eight Speed #1 TRADING BAY showed some ability when debuting against maiden allowance foes last year, showing some speed then coming on again for third in the stretch. If she can sit just behind a potential duel between Spanish Ballerina and Mrs. Del she could have a big shot. #2 SOCIETY’S STORY was blocked in the stretch two weeks ago, eventually swinging to the outside and missing by a nose in a four horse photo. She could conceivably go off as the favourite off of that effort. #4 SPANISH BALLERINA dueled for the lead with Mrs. Del two weeks ago, finishing a very close third. Her best hope is to outsprint Mrs. Del; she may not be able to run as well after another head-and-head duel on a two-week turnaround. #9 EIGHT SPEED took money in her debut last year but came up empty. She is bred to have some talent and could have a good outside stalking trip in this spot.

Race 9 #1 Say The Word - Best Bet #8 Sir Sahib #5 Count Again #2 Malibu Uproar #7 Aheadbyacentury #1 SAY THE WORD ran his two best races last year around one turn, with a win at Belmont and a good third in the King Edward here. He returns after a sequence of wide trips in third level allowance races in New Orleans. #8 SIR SAHIB’s only poor effort last year came in the Northern Dancer. When trying this second allowance lever on the Tapeta in November he had a troubled trip and likely should have hit the board; he should appreciate getting back to the turf. #5 COUNT AGAIN returned from a six month break and was able to win his first level allowance at Tampa in April. He is two-for-two on turf but will be facing a real acid test with this group. #2 MALIBU UPROAR was claimed for $40,000 in September but had to make his two starts for the new connections on the Tapeta. He raced well off of the claim but is probably better off on the grass. #7 AHEADBYACENTURY has not won since his impressive two year old campaign. He ran more good races than bad last year; the turf will be interesting as his only turf start came over a wet course in the Breeders’ Stakes.
