33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) St. Hugh of Lincoln A Sunday Reflection

Today, November 17, we celebrate the feast day of our titular saint, St. Hugh of Lincoln, who died on this date in 1200. With this celebration we kick off our Jubilee Year celebrating the 60th anniversary of the foundation of our parish, and commemorating the 800th anniversary of his canonization in 1220.

St. Hugh parish was founded on June 30, 1959, by Bishop Coleman F. Carroll, nine months after his installation as bishop of the new Diocese of Miami. The land for the present church was generously donated by Mrs. Liguori Matheson, widow of Mr. Hugh Matheson, one of the earliest developers of South Florida. The parish was named St. Hugh of Lincoln in his honor.

It is important for us as a community to celebrate, recognize and ask the intercession of our patron saint. We have been established as a parish under his protection and instituted with his name to honor his example of holiness. May we experience the intercession and protection of this holy monk and bishop, St. Hugh of Lincoln. Praised be God in his saints! St. Hugh of Lincoln, pray for us!

Reflexión Dominical Hoy, 17 de noviembre, celebramos la fiesta de nuestro santo titular, San Hugo de Lincoln, quien murió en esta fecha en el año 1200. Con la celebración de hoy damos comienzo al año jubilar por los 60 años de la fundación de nuestra parroquia y conmemoramos los 800 años de su canonización en 1220.

La parroquia de San Hugo fue fundada el 30 de junio de 1959 por el Obispo Coleman F. Carroll, nueve meses después de su instalación como obispo de la nueva Diócesis de Miami. La Sra. Liguori Matheson, viuda de uno de los pioneros en el desarrollo del sur de la Florida, generosamente donó el terreno para la construcción de la iglesia actual. La parroquia recibió el nombre de San Hugo de Lincoln en su honor.

Es importante para nosotros como comunidad el celebrar, reconocer y pedir la intercesión de nuestro santo patrono. Hemos sido establecidos como parroquia bajo su protección e instituidos con su nombre para honrar su ejemplo de santidad. Sixty Years ago

Sixty years ago, our founding Pastor, Fr. Ward, addressed the above letter to all St. Hugh parishioners asking for their support in the campaign to raise funds to build our church: “I realize that you have done much already for the neighboring Parishes whose spiritual children we are. The need of a Church for our new Parish of St. Hugh now faces us…” The amount to be raised was $200,000.

Fr. Ward appealed to the generosity of his parishioners: “I am confident you will meet it with the same loyalty, sacrifice and generosity with which you met the needs of other days…. I know you will respond as magnificently as you have in the past to this latest call for material assistance.”

He goes on to say: “Within a few days, members of the Parish will call upon you. They will be gentlemen who have made a sacrificial gift to bring the goal within sight. They have also given of their time and effort during the past several weeks.” A few of them are still with us.

As we begin the celebration of our 60th Anniversary, let us be grateful for Fr. Ward and for those early parishioners who contributed their time and effort so that we may worship in this church. To those who have gone on to their reward, may God grant them eternal rest. To those still with us, from the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!

Ward, dirigió la carta que aparece arriba a todos los feligreses de St. Hugh, solicitando su apoyo para recaudar fondos para la construcción de la iglesia: “Comprendo que han hecho mucho por las parroquias vecinas, de las que somos hijos espirituales. Ahora enfrentamos la necesidad de una iglesia para nuestra parroquia de St. Hugh…” La suma a recaudar eran $200,000.

El P. Ward apelaba a la generosidad de sus feligreses: “Confío en que contribuirán a esta necesidad con la misma lealtad, sacrificio y generosidad con que lo han hecho en el pasado… Sé que responderán tan maravillosamente como antes a este reciente pedido de ayuda material”.

Al dar comienzo a esta celebración de nuestros 60 años, demos gracias por el P. Ward y por esos parroquianos que dieron de su tiempo y esfuerzo para que podamos tener esta iglesia. A los que ya han pasado a la eternidad, que Dios les dé el descanso. Y a los que aún están con nosotros, desde el fondo del corazón: ¡GRACIAS!

More on the 40 Hours Devotion? (III) DURING THE FIRST 80 years of the existence of the United States, the practice of 40

Hours Devotion took place only in “some” Parishes in “some” dioceses. However, that was changed by St. John Neumann. He immigrated to the United States as a cleric and was ordained as a priest in New York in 1836. He served in various pastoral capacities in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland for the next 16 years.

In 1852, St. John was consecrated Bishop of Philadelphia. He quickly began establishing schools in his parishes and establishing many new parishes, especially national parishes for the many immigrants in his diocese. St. John also introduced the practice of 40 Hours Devotion at his first diocesan synod in 1853. The first instance of the practice took place at St. Philip Neri Parish. He soon introduced the program throughout his diocese. The practice of 40 Hours Devotion was so successful in the Diocese of Philadelphia that it spread quickly to many other dioceses. In fact, at the Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1866, the 40 Hours Devotion was approved for all dioceses in the United States.

Over the course of the last century, the practice of 40 Hours Devotion has diminished to some degree, especially after the II Vatican Council. The 1973 Instruction on Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass does not specify 40 Hours Devotion. However, it states that in churches where the Eucharist is reserved, it is recommended that solemn exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for an extended period of time should take place once a year even though this period is not strictly continuous… (n. 86)

November is Stewardship Month in the Archdiocese of Miami. Jesus warns us

to be prepared, for we know not when the end time will occur, nor even our own death. But Jesus also promises to protect us if we are faithful to Him. Are we faithful to His teachings and practicing the fundamentals of Christian stewardship in a way that would be pleasing to Him? Noviembre es el Mes de la Mayordomía en la Arquidiócesis de Miami. Sketches of St. Hugh’s Life As a Carthusian, St. Hugh lived an austere life, and

to the abstinence and heavy corporal penance that was common in the Order he added avoiding eating meat

always and everywhere, as well as wearing a hair shirt.

He was simple and kind in all things and was especially kind to animals. He tamed little birds and

domesticated squirrels, having them in his cell as table companions. It seemed as if the animals had discovered

his natural kindness and they even left the woods and ate from his hand. Eventually his prior learned of this and told Hugh to refrain from doing it because it might disturb

his prayers.

Around the year 1176, he was sent to England at the request of King Henry II, to be prior and master of the first Carthusian monastery in

the country. It was located in the southern part of the island, at a place called either “Witham”, meaning white, or “Wittham”, meaning wisdom.

But the Grace of God, so abundant, is always demanding.

Those who have received much must learn to give much,

and not to keep only for themselves what they have

received. Those who have received much must learn to

give much. It is not by chance that the Gospel of Matthew,

immediately after having given the text of the “Our Father”,

of the seven expressions used pauses to emphasize

precisely that of fraternal forgiveness: “For if you forgive

men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive

you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father

forgive your trespasses” (Mt 6:14-15)….if you do not forgive, God will not forgive

you. You close the door. Let us consider whether we are able to forgive or if we

do not forgive.

No es una coincidencia que el Evangelio de Mateo, inmediatamente después

del texto del Padrenuestro entre las siete expresiones utilizadas, enfatice

precisamente la del perdón fraterno: «Si vosotros, perdonáis a los hombres

sus ofensas, os perdonará también a vosotros vuestro Padre celestial, pero si

no perdonáis a los hombres, tampoco vuestro Padre perdonará vuestras

ofensas» (Mt 6,14-15)…. si no perdonas, Dios no te perdonará. Tú cierras la

puerta….pídele al Señor que te dé la fuerza para hacerlo: Señor, ayúdame a

perdonar.

All Saints and Veneration of Relics

On Friday, November 1, we celebrated the Feast of All Saints and recognized the Students of the Month. The students also took part in the exposition and veneration of 450 Sacred Relics of Saints and Blesseds.

Certification

Congratulations to Saint Hugh Catholic school for receiving STREAM certification from the FCC. Saint Hugh is the first ADOM elementary/middle school in Miami Dade County to receive this distinguished certification. Thank you to our students, the incredible faculty and staff, the spiritual leadership of our pastor Father Luis and our parent community for their love and support!

Look What’s Happening in the Classroom!

Students will learn about the Native Americans, the Pilgrims, and the significance of their friendship. They will compare their way of life by learning about their customs, clothing, housing and different beliefs. The students will learn the importance of respect, acceptance, love, and, above all, faith in God.

Alumni News St. Hugh Alumni, Chelsea Pennekamp and Bella Pennekamp, attended the 2019 Techno293 World Championship in Puerto Sherry, Spain, where 36 countries were represented by their top windsurfing team members. Both girls sailed in the U17 class in Silver fleet and represented the Island of the Grand Bahamas. Congratulations for this accomplishment!
